So I'm fairly new to android and all the wonderful things it holds, and I like all the customization i can do. I started to look around for some custom roms and that led me to wonder if it is at all possible for me to create my own rom. I started to do research and found some answers, but all the answers i found seem to be from 2010. Is there any help you guys could give me on creating my own custom rom or can anyone point me in the right direction? Thanks

I have that rom.. I just don't have a way to do the 5 locks for JVB or the extended power menu...
There are topics in the I9000 section that cover what your looking for.

Cezar has a ROM, Continuum v5 (here). maybe you could download it and extract what you are looking for. Or, just use the ROM
Because most themes IMO are ugly. I personally like the stock samsung with some small modifications. No one does that. I haven't found one rom from the developers that don't screw with the theme. Not everyone likes what you like. The best I can do is download something from the romkitchen with the stock theme and get smart little remarks when I try to ask for help.

There you go, dude. Completely stock except for xcal's kernel, 5 lock screen mod, built in ad blocking, overscroll effect and crt off. Also has launcher2, but it seems the icons in the app drawer are fuzzy, so if that bothers you, you might want to set touchjizz as the default launcher.
It also won't flash bootloaders, so you'll need to find the new 2.3 ones somewhere else. I recommend just flashing the stock jvb from samfirmware.com with xcal's kernel, then flashing this over it with CWM.
Maybe wait it out for Perception II? DG ROMs usually have a pretty stock feel to them.
MM do you know where I can find a tut on adding the extended menu and such. I'm interested in the dev part. Just hard finding anyone willing to help you get started.

The one I linked you to has the extended power menu. Doing it yourself is a bit involved.. you have to decompile the .dex/.odex executable with baksmali.jar and edit the code (.smali files), then recompile it with smali.jar and repackage the apk. I don't know if there are any actual tutorials that go in depth on the topic; at least I haven't seen any. It's really kind of a dive-in-and-do-it thing.
If you want to try adding common features like that to a bare rom though, there are a lot of precompiled versions floating around on xda where you just have to replace the .jar file in the proper directory. Just search for the feature you want and chances are pretty high that someone already made a standalone cwm flashable zip of it. Either that or you can try pulling it out of existing roms and popping it in to your own, provided they're based off of the same build of android.
You should check out MikeyMike's rom building tut. It's one of the stickied threads at the top of the general section. It goes over the basics pretty well.
thanks man. I'm going to have to give it a shot. This zip won't work with CWM 3
My Gingerbread ROM will have a very stock theme.

Oh, wacky.. thanks for telling me, I don't normally build roms for other people and I stick to CWM 2.5.

the thing you gotta ask yourself like the others are saying is what do you want your rom to have. you want a theme feel to it or do you wanna keep it looking stock. also gotta figure if you wanna add some tweaks or not. there's a lot you gotta figure out before you make a rom. also, you gotta know a lot about what does what when tweaking and all that. i was also thinking about doing some roms myself, but then decided against cause i for one don't have the time nor do i have the patience the devs here have. you also gotta remember that there are gonna be people here who want you to change some things about your rom. and not to mention, you gotta have the time to offer support for it as well. if you do decide to go for it, i wish you the best of luck and look forward to seeing your work.
well i do want to learn how to tweak the phone and themes and all that good stuff, i recently messaged raver and he gave me a good start, so i will start studying linux and java then ill be back hopefully with enough info to tweak some newer OS leak or if anything help out on another phone ( hopefully it wont be that long) but like i said i want to learn for self knowledge and also to help create some awesome stuff in the XDA
and i do have the time to support and modify roms as needed.
so if anyone has any advice on the best way to learn linux and java faster post post post!!! lol
and ill come back and read between my readings thanks for not being jerks by the way lol
Also i might base my rom on Android 2.1 J/K haha but im off to a good start tonight

if you wanna base a rom on froyo, by all means go for it. you would be surprised how many people still run on froyo here. some are afraid to take the plunge to gingerbread cause its not official yet for our device. go with what you feel is best. personally, i think there should be a dev who still makes roms for froyo for those who don't wanna take the plunge. its all up to you though. good luck with your journey either way though.
your right im on raver's octaine and its cool but a couple days ago i flashed back to Audiophile Redux 1.3.3 and i saw a big difference in radio and wifi strength so i might actually start off with a Froyo rom, but i was just making a joke earlier cus i said 2.1 like an eclair rom lol
sence so many are intrested in this actually didnt think that many would.. after i update my roms maybe before then i dono... Ill make you all a compendium of how to build apps how to modify exzisting roms how to build your own rom aka asop how to port roms theme them etc... Ill also prob ask krylon and whitehawk and any other dev that wants to contribute to this. If anyone does. It doesnt hurt and hey if a few ore devs come out of it so be it .. If anyone ever has a question 99 percent of the time u can ask people i will reply and give u the answer or if i dont know the answer ill direct you to the proper place to look for it
haha aawesome!!! see this is exactly why i only flash Raver roms!!! wooo i went from octaine 1.0 to audiophile redux to octaine 2.x to audiophile x2 back to octaine 2.x haha
If Raver leaves my phones post- SGS4G will all remain stock lol
im also looking into modding nd tweaking roms myself so a guide like the one raver is gonna make would be very helpful. thanks in advance
As the OP can i erase some comments on this post? lol just asking...again!
also one more question im back to Audiophile Redux 1.3.3 would the SGS4G Adrenaline shot v12 work with my Froyo rom?
Hi there are some realy good ROMS about and i wanted to try make one how would i go about that?
Your best bet is to search for a ROM kitchen. There is one being developed for the s3 in either the development or original development forum.
I could be wrong (i have made mods, not full roms) but the idea is start with a ROM image (usually a samsung one unless you want to venture into the aosp realm), run various options in the kitchen to prep the ROM (deodex, zip align, etc), add your mods (maybe a themed SystemUI.apk, a modified framework-res.apk, remove app apks, or add app apks), and use the kitchen to zip it all up in a cwm zip.
Anyone who finds fault in this explanation please correct it.

I try to make Rom in the dsixda's Android Kitchen, but in the Recovery Mode was Status 7
I was wondering if anyone can tell me if its possible to extract (or copy/make a flashable zip) the kernel from an installed ROM. I was wanting the JB stock Kernel for future use. Also the stock Recovery as well. Ive seen the question asked in a few topics but none have been answered.Any help would be greatly appreciated....
Thanks to all you DEV's who put in the time and effort to enhance our NS4G experiences. I wish I had more hands so I could give you 4 thumbs up

I am still using my SK4G. Love it! and there really are some excellant roms here for it. I was wanting to use the aroma installer, can I use this with any rom? Or does the rom have to have it included already? If I can use this with any rom, do I just flash it after I flash the rom or ?????
Thanks for any help, and sorry if this has been addressed. I have been searching and combing through everything here, and chasing down files and all that fun stuff, so it can be a bit of a mess to untangle now that I have jut about everything I was wanting.
There is only one ROM with aroma options during the initial flash but I believe it still had some issues where ricandroid and I left off.
There was a thread with an aroma install for various apps and mods which I believe yo are referring to, and yes that can be used with any ROM (except for the not finished gingerbread port) it can be flashed at any time. So if you flash a ROM and like it, then flash that aroma installer and you can customize the ROM currently on device.
I hope someday to pick up where I left off and even hopefully work on a gingerbread ROM where xindixix left off.
There are still a few people on this forum who are left and are glad to answer any question, even a few willing to do some work for the sk4g so long as someone will use it...
