Screen issue - HTC Desire S

Hey guys,
My phone seems to have a strange issue where what you were doing previously is still showing on the screen. For example, I was playing draw something and then opened up the xda app. During the loading I could still see the page where I was guessing the word. Is anyone else having this issue? Also, do you believe it's worth sending my phone back, as the warranty is coming to an end. I feel it's getting worse
Sent from my Desire S using xda premium

Is this on just one ROM you are using, or have you noticed it on several. If so, I believe it is a hardware fault.
I think you should send it in for warranty
Sent from my HTC Desire S using Tapatalk

Well icecoldsandwich and Cm9 are the only two ROMs I have used lately and they both have the fault. But they also both share the fact they're both ice cream sandwich
Just when I had settled down to a ROM, I'm having to change again

Screen Burn ?
Isn't it the Screen Burn issue ? Have you set your brightness too high ?

I have the same issue, I thought it was the screen burn issue. Happens across all ROMS, but it fades after a while so I'm not really bothered.

My brightness is always on auto brightness. I don't think it's ever on the highest brightness.
Also mine fades quickly, but before it was hardly visible. Now you can see the previous image clearly. But this only seems to happen on certain screens.
Seems to be a common issue, most people say it disappears after a while. Might as well just leave it. Not worth putting my phone back to stock.

I'm experiencing it with all the ROMs. It annoys me sometimes, but goes away quickly.
Anyway, you're not an isolated case...

Screen burn, burn-in, image retention.
I'm on my 3rd DS and they've all had it. It's annoying but it didn't last so that's something I suppose.
Apparently it's fairly common with SLCD screens.
Lowering the brightness, hiding the statusbar, and some livewallpapers/screensavers have helped in my experience though.

i too had the same issue previously.. but back then i always had the screen brightness set to the lowest. thought it was due to that and now am changing the brightness based on the lighting of the environment as i hate to set it to auto.. after that am not seeing that issue

G2X auto-brightness broken?

Is it just me or does the auto-brightness seem to only stay at a certain brightness and never change? On my previous phone, usually when I had auto-brightness enabled, whenever I walked into a dark room, my brightness would lower right away but on this phone, no matter where I go, the brightness seems to always be the same with auto-brightness on. The brightness does not change, even when I walk out with the sun out..
Can anybody confirm this please, I'm thinking of exchanging this unit as it might be defective...
Sent from my LG-P999
Might be your phone. In my moderately-lit office, I can definitely see the screen brightness change when I focus a flashlight on the sensor and then take it away. It's not a huge difference, but definitely observable.
Do you use a case? Is the case blocking the light sensor?
I do not use a case. I have also tried blocking the sensor with my fingers and the brightness just seems to always stay the same... also when I use the power control widget to change brightness and set it to auto-brightness it immediately jumps to that same particular brightness level that I've been stating

I was noticing this as well. It seems to just go to medium brightness and stay there all day. I never notice any changing.

The change is definitely less noticeable on this phone than my Nexus One, but is there.
I just got the G2x and it does the same for me. It's range of brightness seems to be 20-30% and that's it. I had this problem with stock gingerbread, so I tried rooting and installing CM7, but same problem. So I got it set to manual 10/40/100 on my power control.
My friend said his original droid did this for quite a while until a software update came along a few months later. Maybe we just have to wait till there's a software update to fix it?
Yes, it's borked, always has been.
Mine is broken too. Same happens to me.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Same here. It has never worked, as far as I can remember. Depending on where the setting happens to be left at, my battery runs out in just a few hours, or I cannot use it in the car.
Aside: I switched to an original Droid from an iPhone 3G, then onto a G2X. My next phone is going to be an iPhone -- and I'm not coming back to Android until Google figures things out. Android is nice, but I hate being out of date after a couple of months, and having to install unsupported, hacky, half-broken user-built ROMs to stay current with the state-of-the-art functionality.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S screen problem - washed out - software or hardware?

Hi guys
I have a screen problem with my SSGS i9000 - really hope you can advise a novice like me.
Yesterday, all of a sudden the screen looked really washed out, like the contrast/gamma had been turned up too far. Gmail, internet, pictures and videos are looking really pale and not clear - washed out and cloudy. The end call button more orange than red, battery indicator looks fuzzy. In phone settings the screen is set to lowest brightness.
Exactly this same issue occured in June last year when the phone was 7 months old. I took it to my supplier here in the UK (Carphone Warehouse). The onsite engineer updated the software to the then latest version - Gingerbread & 2.3.3. This cured it. All has been fine since, until yesterday.
Based on my previous experience I decided to check for software updates on Kies. Kies updated it to 2.3.5. Screen problem remained.
On advice of a friend, he suggested a "proper" reinstall - I read up about ODIN and last night took the plunge and I flashed the phone to:
Firmware 2.3.6
Kernel: 2.6.35.7-I9000XXJW4-cl1043937
Build: gingerbread.XXJW4
The phone is working beautifully, but the screen problem remains.
My question is is there anything else I can do on the software/reflashing of the phone to sort this issue? Is there anything I've missed or should do? Or has the screen had it and require replacement? ie. is it a hardware fault?
I should add, I hardly use this phone. It gets very very light use as a second phone largely for gmail. I get 4-5 days out of it on standby - that's how little it's used!
Hope you can help me.
Cheers in advance

the SAMOLED is a wonderful piece of technology, but it isnt without its flaws. In particular the Blue emitters 'burn' out quicker than the other colours. This is affected by certain variables such as the average screen brightness, how long the screen has been on for (total on life time) as well as the infusion of the AMOLED matrix during manufacture.
IMO your screen is fine. on some mods, you can change the phones render effect, by making the white tone shift more blue / red / green. If this issue is really bugging you, try find a mod that enables you to make this change.
Cheers for the reply.
The low level of use is what puzzles me as to why this issue could have occured.
Common problem with all SGS. Bound to happen sooner or later. Just learn to live with it, unless you are under warranty, and can get it replaced by Samsung.

I think you could probably get it replaced by Sammy, but you'd have to pay them, as your warranty is gone.

Screen constantly adjusts brightness...

Just received my tf700t and updated to the new firmware. I noticed that when switching from any screen back to home screen and even throughout watching movies on my tablet, the screen brightness constantly adjusts even with automatic brightness turned off. Its pretty annoying esp. while watching movies. Is there a solution to this problem?
Can't say I have noticed that, and I've used it both with automatic brightness on and off. Maybe try a factory reset?

I noticed the same thing - I believe it's the LED backlight adjusting when you go from bright-to-dim and dim-to-bright screens. It is annoying though. I'm assuming that I'll just get used to it (I just got my TF700 yesterday)...

So your saying that taking off the auto and setting it to the brightest setting and it still adjusts by itself.

Yes, I have noticed it as well. Doesn't bother me, though -- I'd rather have the system tweak itself for brightness than just picking a brightness off-hand and sticking to it.
I've previously owned the tf101 and never had anything like this happen. I use my tf700t at about 30-40% ips, and it constantly adjusts. I haven't tried it at full brightness, but it still is weird that it would keep adjusting even throughout watching movies. It almost like 3 or 4 subtle brightness changes when going from say the apps screen back to the home menu (on default wallpaper). I went through all my settings and googled it without success, so I'm figuring that people either don't notice or just aren't bothered by it. It's driving me crazy though
I noticed this...and thought I was going crazy. Thanks for confirming it's not just me and yes it drives me nuts. Hopefully there comes out a way to stop it.
Auto brightness was way too dim for me. So I've disabled it and set the brightness myself.

What I'm talking about has nothing to do with auto brightness. When it's turned off, there seems to be some type of secondary auto brightness that you have no control over because it constantly adjusts when switching through certain apps/screens and playing movies. Look closely at the screen and you should see it. I'm glad I'm not alone as a few others have confirmed this discovery as well. I don't understand the point in setting your own brightness when the tablet will still adjust itself with auto shut off. I hope a fix of some sort will come soon.
I have not noticed any change in brightness levels with auto brightness turned off.
It reminds me a bit of the brightness/contrast adaptation my SGS2 does -- only there it can be toggled under the display settings, whereas on the TF700 you're just stuck with it.
I don't think that the screen is actually changing brightness - just that the backlight is adjusting as needed depending on how much bright/dim colors are on the screen...
What's strange is that if I enable auto-brightness (which works great in the bright office), that effect seems to go away... Very strange...
I'm assuming that it's a battery-saving thing, but I'm really not sure...

I actually watched this happen (without auto brightness on) without transitioning to a new screen while scrolling past a dark image on a light forum thread. I think it's a tegra 3 thing. I know I read about t3 dynamically adjusting the backlight during video playback and saving more energy in the process than the t3 soc itself consumes during playback.
I've been using mine on power save mode so far. I'm betting the brightness changes would be more fluid and less noticeable at higher speeds.
Read your user manuals. It discusses the feature in its entirety.:good:

So that's probably your answer,
You running on maximum power saving mode. What you expect?
You asking tablet to save all power it can, and that's exactly what's it's doing.
Of course there's a chance of defect, hardware it software. But that could only be tested on a group of other tablets using same settings, to try to recreate what you describing.

I've noticed the same, as well as a few other users, we actually had a (sub)thread about this a few days ago here.
This is in fact very similar (or equal) to dynamic contrast we all know from LCD screens. Unfortunately I do not know the solution, but setting the brightness to as low as I need in any given lighting conditions helps.

Touch screen issues

Hey guys, I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem... My screen bugs out multiple times a day. Regardless of the ROM I am running. The only way to fix the problem is to lock the screen, and unlock. Kind of annoying. Just started happening recently, and like I said, on multiple Roms. Anyone else having the same problem??

Bad LCD
Mine freaks out too. Like static on old black and white uhf tv's. I think its a loose wire cause the only way to fix it is to smack the back of the phone (....just like an old tv). I thought about changing the LCD but since its a release day thunderbolt, I'm due for an upgrade soon. I think I'm just going to ride it out.

Video: Samsung seems to have introduced black clipping/crush with software

It seems to me that Samsung has screwed up the screen calibration inadvertently in their cluster-F of an OS. The S4 shows black clipping in images, gamma test charts, and videos, but I found some remnants of a more capable screen here!
http://youtu.be/V7T4rEQt27o
Seriously Samsung, don't give a crap if it gives somewhat better battery life, FIX THE DAMN THING! What's the point of releasing an FHD phone and having that black clipping and blue tint? At least leave an option to switch it on and off.
Will be fixed with custom kernels as with S3/Note 2, hopefully.
Noticed this last night while multitasking.
Kind of annoying, I do think its software related because my SystemUI crashed at one point, among other things, and it stopped happening.

Whats stopped happening after the UI crash? Did the clipping go away?
that would be a step in the right direction

Correct. Whereas before going from one screen to the other would cause a momentary jump in brightness, then a quick lowering of brightness by a noticeable but nearly insignificant degree - post a ton of errors/crashes, it stopped happening.
At one point the phone jumped a few notches in brightness (without my touching anything). And from then on out, all my screen swaps from light/dark, dark/light, different apps stopped having that ever-so-slight adjustment.
So it *seems* like it is an adjustment made on-the-fly of sorts, and I would really love to just be able to disable it...
This was a major problem in the OG Note and was never fixed.
Samsung needs to fix their screen because it's terrible compared to other phones. I can barely see the screen in daylight when I'm outside.
As an experienced Android and iPhone user, this phone is the biggest disappointment of my life. The lag is horrible and there are so many annoyances like the screen brightness changing all of a sudden (with auto brightness off). We need CM10

I can confirm that this happens in Netflix as well. If you pause on a scene with clipping, and hold down the menu button, the clipping goes away or atleast improves substantially, right before the Netflix app fades away.
There definitely seems to be something crippling the gamma across the OS
Is it me or am I the only one happy with the screen? It's not that bad in daylight as long as you bump up the brightness and you can adjust the color mode on the screen so it mimics the HTC One color saturation.
Also I don't notice any clipping, fault screen perhaps?
I leave auto brightness on all day I live in sunny Miami Florida and I see my phone perfectly outside. I never have any jump of brightness but in the settings menu I do get a little bit of this blue smearing and whites go a little darker but its minor not enough to make you annoyed. I don't know but I'm having no problems with my phone and I love it

Go to the Play Store and watch the Trailer for Django Unchained.....no clipping? Clipping is present on every AMOLED, just to different degrees
As far as is my understanding, either the screen smears on grey on black, or you have reddish blacks. Some might not notice it or care really

The smearing can be reduced by using the appear app Scream Adjuster and setting red green and blue to + 5 to +10 depending on how badly it smears.
Yea it sucks. But an update can easily address this issue
can someone give me a specific example of where they're having problems?
I just ran the black/white/APL clipping patterns from AVSHD-709. Movie, Photo, and Standard all show no problems. Dynamic however, crushes blacks. Those who are having issues, are you all running Dynamic screen mode?
edit: upon further inspection, it would appear that 17 and 18 get clipped in movie/photo/standard. It's not perfect, and that's all this guy seems to be demonstrating, but I can't imagine a situation where any of you could be legitimately noticing it. It's well below 10% luminance. Just leaning back in your computer chair can clip that many shades of black or more on an LCD monitor. Just as an example; this would not show up on a calibration report, even if gamma was done in 5% steps instead of the typical 10%.
If any of you are really seeing crushed blacks, I would bet that you're using dynamic mode.

Then you need to exchange your phone. I got the 32GB on the 10th and installed the Titanium backup setup from my GS3 and the S4 destroys it in every way. Absolutely no lag, much better battery life, more natural screen saturation, although still oversaturated on the greens. I havent changed the default setting for the screen, which was set on adapt. I am a full time video editor and I just watched the Django trailer off the play store and it was flawless, blacks were crisp, no pixellation or overcrushed blacks and the brightness did not pulsate with changes in luminance from scene to scene. With auto brightness on in a dark room or fully lit room.
I do remember when I got the S3 with ICS stock how terrible the autobrightness was and terribly laggy camera was but after wither the JB update or custom ROMs, all that went away. But none of that exists on this 32GB one I have, so if you applied the latest update and you have the same probs then def get an exchange.
the black clipping is a known issue, and if you're still complaining about lag, swap your phone as everyone who's done that hasn't had any since. as for random brightness changes, noone's mentioned them since the ota
Got rid of the lag by switching launcher to nova and froze a lot of **** from AT&T and Samsung. It hasn't freeze ever since.
The smearing is present but only in the settings menu when I scroll up/down. Not a big deal but I hope it gets fixed.
Besides that the screen is gorgeous and have no complaints. Excellent battery life.
