[Q] AWFUL BATTERY LIFE on Droid 2 Global with CM7.1RC - Droid 2 Global General

I've been running CyanogenMod 7.1.0-RC1-ROID2WE-KANG since I got my Droid 2 Global several months ago (around September of 2011, I believe). At the time, there wasn't much available by way of stable mods for the Global. I wish I had done more research before buying; I would have bought a regular Droid 2, but the price and condition on the Global was excellent.
In any case, I get about four hours out of a full battery charge, if I'm LUCKY. Often it's closer to three.
I just ordered a new battery, and put it in, and experienced the same problem today.
I don't have any background processes running, only have three home screens, only one widget, bluetooth is off, etc, and my screen brightness is set at 15%.
Does anyone have ANY idea at all why this is happening? It happened on my OG Droid after some time running CM7 as well. I don't really want to have to flash back to stock for a day to test and see what's wrong, but I may have to. It's a major pain though.
I plan on updating to 7.2 now that I realize it's out, but I'm not sure that will fix anything.
HELP!!

People were never intended to use that version to begin with. See what happened, before GB was given to the D2G some wonderful devs on rootzwiki built cm7 on top of a froyo kernel. But there were still some bugs. However, the cyanogen team takes way too long to approve and puts too many road blocks in there that really prevent the devs from updating the official d2g tree. So ever since then they haven't updated that but over on rootzwiki in the d2g dev thread theres a thread for cm7 that's now based on GB kernal 608 that works wonderfully. Developed by x13thangelx, bikedude, revnumbers and a bunch of other dudes who names escape me right now.

Trying to decide which ROM to go with, hoping it fixes my issues

Ok, I was an early adopter of this phone bought it the day it came out July 18th. There are a great many things that disappoint me about this phone, main thing being lack of Froyo at the moment. I'm tired of waiting for samsung, I have little faith it will truely resolve my issues which are the following
In order to use wifi I must reboot my phone, this only occurred after the official JH7 was loaded on it through the over the air update that ATT did.
Constantly having lag all the time, and having apps running that I never ever use and dont want such as ATT Navigator, ATT Family Map, etc. I was able to root the phone and get rid of those but it really hasnt helped.
My stereo bluetooth headphones must be paired EVERY single time I want to use them, its not the headphones because they work perfectly with 4 other devices.
Of course the GPS, it sucks for everyone, any of these or all fix that? Samsung seems unwilling.
So maybe I'm wishing too much but I've watched almost every youtube review of the ROMs that are out there and theres a few details that stick out for things that I want in a rom so I'll detail them here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to which one has the best combo.
1. froyo based, I need 2.2 for certain apps
2. I've heard theres different modems that can affect HSPA, I want fastest download and upload.
3. No wild color schemes, I dont like orange or green. I quite like the look of the phone I think samsung did a great job with the touchwiz and I know theres alot of you out there that perfer the "vanilla" versions of Android. I'm not one of those people. I really loved the look of the cognition rom and some of the things it had visually.
4. Overclocking would be nice but not at the expense of battery life, I'm right in the 24-30 hour range just as most are on here, better would be great if possible.
Go to romkitchen.org and build your own there. There are many threads about the advantages of one modem over another, and you can pick pretty much everything yourself. Then search for CLShortfuse's GPS fix and you'll be set.
Don't worry, its extremely easy

Cognition

Precision

30 hours, you have to consider what you are asking. I want faster dl, no lag, better gps, but I don't want to eat any more battery. It is possible to get 30hrs of light to moderate use. Heavy use will yield 12-18
Andromeda v1.2 is a rom that is pretty vanilla....simple and has the things your looking for. You have to try roms that you think will be what you want.

+2 for Andromeda 1.2.
You can fix all of these if you root the phone. The best ROM out there is the Rom Kitchen (aka "Doc's ROMs") over at romkitchen.org. You can "cook up" your own ROMs using the specifications you want. This is what is so great about the ROM kitchen, especially when compared to the other ROMs like Cognition: you can pick what you want, and don't have to take whatever it was that someone else decided was best. For example, if you want the benefits of rooting but want to keep touchwiz, the ROM kitchen has an option for that. It also lets you pick things like the theme, boot animation, apps, etc. There are 5 captivate modems, and you might just have to experiment to see which one is best. I did this, and it was well worth it. The one that worked best for me was the XXJPP modem. Just load a seperate ROM with each of the different modems, flash each, and download a few things to see which is faster. Also check and see how well the GPS works on each.
Rooting will fix the lag, although one of the ROM kitchen kernels (Glitterball's Voodoo) will improve it even further. There is something called "Project Voodoo" which is a community of developers who build a kernel tweak called Voodoo which completely fixes the remaining lag issue (this is caused by the inefficient way the captivate organizes its folders), and also improves a few other features such as resolution.
You should go try out my ROM its small and fast and stable. I'm getting great battery life and DL/UL speeds. Give it a shot.
Here.
Well I decided to go with the serendipity 5.9, I love the speed, my upload and download speeds almost doubled, bluetooth and wifi finally work like they are supposed to!!
I do have a few complaints though, like the keyboard for texting, I loved the samsung one, I hate swipe any way i can get the stock one back on there?

Holy crap what a difference. Everything actually works and is super fast. I would be on cloud nine right now except for the fact I'm probably soon getting the Atrix, this will def hold me over till then.
Im using Precision 3.5 with the monochrome 3.5 theme. Its running the latest suckerpunch kernel. For sure my favorite combo I've tried so far. Its really amazing, not to mention dev'd by ryude, who is one of the best!

Need to get started on custom icons and I think I want to try my hand at a completely custom framework. Anyway, I was perfectly happy with 'dipity out of the box, but since I've flashed Paragon this phone is AMAZING. It's quite fast and the battery seems to last forever. Just now recharging for the first cycle after having to reflash my rom w/o a full battery, so after today I'll know for sure how long the battery last, but initially it seems like I'll get a day or so with my daughter constantly playing video's and games all day.
I have tried the team phoenix roms. I'm currently running phoenix 7.0 and am happy so far.

[Q] GPS and 3G issue

I know this issue have been raised before but I wanted to check if there is a fix.
To reiterate: when Triumph locks GPS signal the cell signal starts to cycle between 3G and 1x even in strong 3G areas. If I try to run any app that actively uses both signals (for example, JogTracker and Slacker) the phone gets stuck in 1x mode for extended periods and Slacker streaming breaks up constantly. I believe, the last rumor was that it has something to do with how Motorola manages power distribution when on battery as both chipsets are vying for power.
So, could you guys point me to a fix if it exists? I am currently on a stock ROM (rooted) but would not mind loading custom ROMs if that's what it takes.
Cheers.
I noticed that the cm7 rom doesnt do it as bad as the stock rom.. but the last cm7 rom i used was the 9/25 one.. i havent tried the newest cm7.. but even a stock rom with a sprint prl doesnt help..

Cm7 development for triumph has come so far so fast I can't believe it! The first one I tried was the first one available I think and it was barely functional! It had no accelerometer, no GPS, intermittant 3g, no forward cam, malfunctioning normal cam and the list goes on. I immediately switched back to froyo with Princely Roms and I tried all those which are VERY good froyo mods. But I was determined to find a good gingerbread rom even though I ruined my 600$ Captivate removing Darkys extreme as it had major issues! The last two weeks I have seen cm7 fix one issue after another and I upgraded to the new beta 1. 2 days ago and was super impressed, but lo and behold I go back to Motorola Triumph hacks and find 3 new beta releases at once! Plus a new miui! I downloaded beta 4 and miui 10 and am just really ecstatic with the performance and stability. I have a really hard time imagining myself flashing a silly themed 2.2 rom with what's out there, oh and the GPS works and is finally quick locking! I just miss my captivates 13 gb internal storage so I do a lot more "apps to SD" but I have never been happier with a device. Cyanogen mod is still king. P.S. Forgot to give credit to Isaac and tickerguy for the amazing work!
So, do I get from your post that CM7 does not have this issue anymore?
Correct! A? Smooth as silk!

Current state of your g2x

Well as you all may know, LG claims korean devices will get ics. We have been holding our breathe for a long time, suprised we are not all dead yet. Regardless, what does everyone think about the g2x and the current development that is going on? I myself am quite frustrated with it. I can get jellybean to build but it is still very much broken, and I refuse to release something that turns my device into a paperweight. I will open source my stuff before too much longer, just to see what others can do, but I do not see many people, deving, modding or even themeing anymore.
I personally like my g2x it stomps my galaxy nexus in quadrants (which means nothing, I just like the big numbers) but it also seems to handle games alot better. I have been through 6 defective ones but, I still hang on to it. I have sold all my other devices besides my nexus and my g2x.
I am sure I got off on the wrong foot with some people, however everything I said came true. Certain teams claimed other teams work as their own and refused to submit their minute changes upstream as required by the gpl they claim protects their rebranded work and now all further development has stopped. The more people that work on something the better off the chances are for success but yea.....anywho
This is not intended to be a flame thread or an i told you so thread. This is intended to find out what everyone thinks of the current development and state of their phone. I want to know what the average user would like to see. What is everyone looking for besides the perfect jellybean/ics rom because none of them will be perfect untill LG gets off its ass.
Sold. Got a Galaxy Nexus enjoying a 100% working ROM of Jelleybean 4.1
I am getting a Samsung Galaxy III when I come back from vacation.

I don't mind if I don't get ICS, cm7 is stable as hell (using kameask or however you spell it), plus faux keeps up with kernels.
V6 super charger makes it twice as snappy, and testing out swapper again just to see.
But regardless, this phone does everything it needs to do at a very good pace. I don't mind if it doesn't get ICS . There isn't much benefit over it then what we have now.
I love the phone and the support from the community but despise the neglect from LG/nVidia. I was running different ROMs until I needed full bluetooth support on the v21y baseband so now I'm back on stock Gingerbread :-\
I bought this phone on contract with intentions of it being future proof and lasting the full 2 years. A year into my contract and the specs are still great on paper. A little bit more RAM would be nice but I can work with it. Just please LG, hook us up with ICS. I don't really want to cough up 400 bucks for a Galaxy Nexus...
I love my g2x...I have been messing around with Harsh's kernel for CM 7...(I even got a OC/UV version...hehe)...I thought about making a CM7 kang (with tweaks and what not)...or an AOSP GB ROM...but right now I'm in school...and debating if I should put the time and effort into development...I don't mind...I'm still learning about how kernels works...and would love to develop something (or at least help out) for our devices...
I like my g2x a lot. Bought it off eBay 7 months ago and have been impressed with the power this thing has. I am very distrought that we are 2 versions of android behind. Yes we have ICS but its not to the level of perfection I need and thus am still on GB. This is my 3rd android phone and I have never fallen this behind thanks to devs of xda.
I understand the driver/source code issues that are holding us back. If we can get a port of our Korean counterpart's ICS, then I will most likely just hold onto this phone for awhile longer.
My contract us up in 3 months and I could save money by going to a monthly plan. If we can't get fully functioning ICS though, I'll be hopping on the note 2. I'm getting the note 2 regardless, but would just like to wait till the right deal comes along instead of paying top dollar.

There are still some ports showing up, but I see 2 things being a barrier to more/better dev activity -
1) Driver availability. Both ICS and GB. ICS ROMs are stuck on things needing HW acceleration, for example. The Froyo camera is almost fully ported to 2.3+ but not exactly. JB - even more so.
2) In call BT audio for new BB. Even though we can flash to have custom ROMs work with v21y, this function is still not working. That is a big reason why I have quit flashing the past few months.
I do like the phone and will keep it until it breaks.

I don't attempt to run ics or jb roms anymore, they still seem unstable. But I am quite content with gb, though I still haven't found a rom+kernel that solves everything. Either it lags or I get SOD/overheating. So far I like cm7 nightlies best, don't know which kernel to go with though.
Galaxy Nexus is on it's way. My G2X is just too buggy, but I am going to keep it as a backup. Plus I want to go to an unsubsidized plan as the rates are much cheaper. For the same price I pay now I can get unlimited talk, text and data, plus hotspot (which I am not paying for now but have been warned that it will soon be an additional $15/month). I make back the cost of the GNEX in one year with the better service and reduced rate.

I like Kwes and BuruRom rooted stock in addition to Temasek's CM7. I've got my phone figured out. If/when (on CM7 based roms) data drops or MMS bugs cause me frustration, I just restore Nandroid back-ups of those rooted stock version(s). If I need to drive an HD movie out the HDMI port for my kids in the backseat, I have better results with Morfic's kernel/CM7. Yeah, the phone runs hot (gets unstable) when pushed hard. It still does all I ask of it - day in, day out. I plan to make it work till I am eligible to upgrade. I hope my replacement for my G2x won't need to be any bigger. I miss the days of being able to forget my cell phone is in my jeans pocket!
I am waiting for a new nexus phone to come out and i am going to buy that and ditch the g2x. I am still running Bionix Reloaded because it is the best rom I have found to date and I have no reason to switch. I tried some ICS roms but my battery died in a few hours and I barley got a data connection. I appreciate all of the hard work and development with the G2X but LG killed it by not releasing drivers. I find it really sad because the G2X is such a powerful phone. I think it is still competitive with current phones that are being released with the software being the only exception. I told myself I will never purchase a new phone unless it is a nexus phone due to the fact that they will get updates.
LG definitely lost my business for a long time.
Personally
I would love to develop for the G2x(I'm learning, but just barely) , but I can't see much that I am capable of doing right now. I'm gonna cook versions of CM7 and play with building kernels. We are in a holding pattern until the nVidia drivers come forward or the CM7 bluetooth thing gets resolved.
Going to keep the phone until at least Christmas, even later probably. My Nexus 7 has made my g2x have great battery life!
Sent from my paranoid Nexus 7.
Lol... I got my nexus 2 or 3 weeks ago and swore I would sell my g2x ( at one point I was contemplating having my friends form a firing line directly at the phone. Then sending the video to lg and nvidia, interrupted by Linus giving them the finger.) But I haven't. I really love the phone to be honest. I was lucky enough to get one without major screen bleed and it has only locked up on me twice (PC/UV kernels).. I'm seriously contemplating keeping it as a back up phone.
I do wish that nvidia and lg would hurry up with the update so I could play around with fully functioning jb Roms, but since I know nothing about coding, I'm no help.
I also notice fewer and fewer devs working on it. I hope they are just waiting for the drivers tho.
So all in all, I still have the phone, even though I have moved on.

Thanks for OP posing this topic. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the contributors in G2X sections, it has benefit me as a Wind Mobile customer in Canada.
I am am not looking for the next new Android OS, I just want a custom ROM that has little or no bloat-wear that is very stable and utilizes the phone's fullest potential. LG /or Wind Mobile has abandon the upgrade to our phone and it is stuck at 2.2.2. We screamed, we yelled, we petitioned and its not going any where. Therefore I will not buy/support any Korean manufactured phones in the future.
So, please keep up the good work.

Agreed, the devs here have done a wonderful job. Though I don't blame them for moving to another device.

[Q] Current State of Rom's & Going Forward

I wrote out a whole post but realized it was mostly rambling so I figured I would condense it, although its still pretty rambling:
It seems like our phone (Maxx HD) just missed the developer bandwagon and that roms aren't really going anywhere and never actually will. Everything seems like a quick port and I have had very little success with most of them. The only stable one I have found has been Nexesque, although its basically stock with a few tweaks and add-ons.
I have been running XenonHD for the past 2ish weeks, 3 maybe with horrible battery life and a heat problem. I was running with all of the regular performance tweeks, a very dark blue (almost black) solid background, low brightness and a black theme so I have no idea what could have caused it. I would run out of full battery by 12 or 1 half of the time with an incredibly hot phone, and the other half of the time I could make it to 6 or 7 but no later. I have reflashed and am almost positive I followed the steps correctly.
I'm not asking what the best rom is, but I'm asking if there is a rom that people are actually happy with out there (preferably 4.2) or if there are any real hopes for a tangible one to come out in the near future. It seems like we're kind of screwed as the user when compared to other phones development, and while I have nothing to offer outside of small donations I would just like to know if my predictions are accurate. Is everybody waiting for something that will never come out?

To be honest I think you need to step back and put everything in prospective.hash dh etc are working on a from scratch kernel that will fix the nagging problems the 4.2.2 roms have had. This kernel is a work in progress, but I think it will be finished to a point acceptable to most people soonish. That being said, besides the annoying gps flash from stock issue and no camcorder I'm not sure there are any major bugs with the 4.2.2 roms. There have been a lot of ports because there are a lot of good roms out there for other devices that people wanted to bring over. We were "screwed" when we bought the phone as this phone had a locked bootloader(with no apparent unlock) and there were never a ton of devs to begin on moto due to the same bootloader issue. That being said, I think a lot of devs have rallied around the hd since the unlock and things will only get better after hash gets the kernel up to speed. I agree nexesque is awesome (it's what I'm running right now in fact) but there are already a lot of choices on each of the 4 most popular forums.
Tl/dr patience lol

I imagine that we will probably also get get an android update at some point (though very unclear what and when). Maybe this will renew developer interest in the device?
I the meantime I hope the kernel development will play out well.
Personally, even if I love personalization and community development, I actually think the stock rom (xt925 Vodafone) is quite good. Good battery life and better ui than much of the competition.

why is there so little development?

I remember two years ago I had a G2x. There was lots of development going on for CM7, ICS, and even CM10. I got a better phone and left for a while, now I come back with another G2x and the development so far has pretty much not changed since I left. Everything is still right where it was. How come there's so little development for the G2x? The phone I went to for the past over a year was the Samsung Galaxy S2 HD LTE (SGH-i757M, a Canadian-only variant that was pretty much unheard of to anybody) and there's an almost stable unofficial CM11 for it.
Yea it pretty much stopped. They can't get the radio to work but they gave it a good try. This is probably it

Pretty much what hippiesky said. Several of us gave it a go, but the radio stayed out of our reach. We did have JB up and running but without the radio a phone is useless except for as a media device. Many of the developers have moved onto other devices. I stil have my G2x and its my daily phone, but I plan on upgrading to the Moto G soon on Republic Wireless as soon as my funds become available.
