(Q) Ubuntu 11.10 wont recognize soft brick mode - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

okay so im on ubuntu 11.10 and cannot get heimdall one click unbrick is not recognising soft brick should im not entirely sure whzt to do because ubuntu wont recognise

Was Ubuntu recognizing your phone before or did you just install Ubuntu to see if you could use the one-click?

well i had ubuntu before hand and yes it recognised it but i only ever connected it to ubuntu one time before this didnt do anything special just trying to 1click unbrick like u said because windows wont see my phone either except as a "USB unrecognised" so not entierly sure what to do ive tried sevral drivers Zedig always says it Failed to install the drivers which is a more recent development it didnt do that before it says resorces already exist

I've only used Ubuntu on rare occasion. I was thinking that with some distributions you have to give permissions on the USB devices before you're allowed to access them. I struggle to think Ubuntu is that way as it's generally user-friendly.
Maybe try grabbing a Live CD of Fedora or SuSE and see if it works?

http://goo.im/devs/zanzibar/LiveCD/PHtoolz-QND.iso this is what im going to use its supposedly set up for phones and stuff like that

okay so that dont work i dont know what to do im on the verge of giving up if anybody out their can help me please do i would like my phone back otherwise i will have to go get a new phone

Do you only have the Linux box? If you have a Windows box or are dual-booting, then you should be able to Heimdall one-click from within Windows.

i am dual booting windows tells me USB not recognised and Heimdall always fails on driver installation

[FIX] Stuck at S/W Upgrade, Running Windows 7 64bit

I posted this in another thread, but created this new one specifically for these users that are having this issue and can't solve it because they don't have access to an XP machine.
I solved my issue late last night. I am running Windows 7 64bit. I saw that a lot of the guys here used XP to run the KDZ flasher and that wasn't an option for me until I installed XP Mode.
XP Mode allows you to run a virtual XP machine inside Windows 7. I was able to run the KDZ flasher in there and successfully flashed the KDZ GB file to my phone.
You do need to flash stock recovery first. I tried unsuccessfully to flash the KDZ with CWM recovery installed. It would not work until I flashed stock recovery.
One other problem I ran into is, in XP Mode, you are "attaching" USB devices to the virtual XP session via a "stub USB driver." For some reason during the KDZ flashing process the USB modem driver for LG kept releasing from my session. What I did to counteract this was manual attach it each time it released. This was easy, but I had to stay on top of it until the flasher finished the job. I have two monitors so I had the "Devices and Printers" window open in Windows 7, and when I heard the ding indicating the USB driver had left the session, and saw the LG devices appear in the Devices and Printers window, I would just click attach on the USB pulldown in the XP session.
I know this sounds a little complex for some (and possibly vague), but once you get into the XP Mode session you will see what I'm talking about.
I hope this helps you guys still stuck on SW Update screen that don't have XP.
hey guys whats up

The Roms for the p999 and the p990 are not inter changeable. Different frame work.

[Q]S-Off failing to communicate with phone?

(I posted this in the guide to installing s-off etc etc but yeah I don't know if anyone's going to pay it any mind there :S If I was wrong to create this, I'm sorry ><)
Hi,
I keep getting a Communication interrupted error. I don't know if anyone else had this problem and can help me? I'm a n00b with this s-off thing and I triple checked with like 4 different websites to make sure I'm going the right way with this.
Doing this on Windows, I got the HTC driver, removed anything that would sync the phone to the computer, everything going well up until this point:
Zerging Root... this may take a minute or so..
Sending in Caroline...
Cleaning up...
Rebooting to fastboot...
Whien life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. Make life take back the lemons
Waiting for fastboot...
Rebooting to fastboot (again)...
Communications with phone unexpectedly interrupted. Try Again.
Press (almost) any key to exit.
What's wrong with it?
also:
I put on the USB Debugging, I turned off Fastboot, and yes, I checked - it is still S-ON *sad*
HTC Sensation 4G (pyramid-1.17.0008, Android: 2.3.3, ROM version: 1.29.531.2)
I have tried with the fastboot on as well
As for these troubleshooting methods, I've been through it over and over:
Revolutionary Hanging on "Method 3"
1. Make sure you have installed all the drivers from above.
2. Please Make Sure you have HTC Sync uninstalled and Droid Explorer uninstalled.
3. Install These Drivers HERE:
4. Basically anything and everything that will allow your phone or other phones to automatically connect or sync to your computer has to be uninstalled
5. Try another Computer or Factory Reset your device as a last resort.
I've tried 3 different computers (I have no access to anyone who has a Linux computer) I've factory resetted my phone twice + my SD card. I really don't know what else to do
I've tried it in Charge Mode, and HTC sync mode as well.
Can anyone help me? :S
you have to do it in charge mode, make sure fast boot is off, and here is the tricky part, ANY app that could sync with the fone, needs to be uninstalled.
for me Zune kept messing with the install cuz it kept trying to sync...
Also, make sure your HBOOT is compatible with the version of revo you are using
so try this:
1) uninstall itunes (and other apple device software), zune, and any htc software (plus the stock drivers)
2) reboot
3) clean the registry (regclean or something similar)
4) reboot
5) reinstall stock drivers then plug in the phone (charge only) and let the pc detect the hardware.
6) unplug the fone and reboot the pc
7) NOW try to S-OFF, should work, this is the process i had to take
Thanks, i tried everything you told me and it still won't work. I'm running out of ideas. Isn't there another method I could go through so I can just flash a custom rom. Lol...
if its unbranded, you can try the HTC method, but im not a fan of their approach to it...revo is much more user friendly in the long run...
also have you tried disconnecting all usb devices other than the keyboard, mouse and phone? also try doing a battery pull and leave it out for 10-15 seconds, and give it another shot
also, what ver of revo u using? the latest? and whats your hboot?
EDIT nm, saw your hboot etc in your first post long night at work
also, this may be a super stab in the dark, try another cable if you have one, just try to eliminate any possible issue
This exactly what I had with my Win7 tappy lappy. Its the "sucky usb stack".
Then I used a win xp 32 bit machine no problems.

yeah, apparently win7 is giving different users this problem, i used WinXP SP2 32bit with no issues
Yup. Definitely related to Win7 64 bit version for me. Although the user didn't report what version they were using.
It's also worth remembering that all USB ports aren't all the same.
I have to use the ports on the front of this particular 32 bit XP workstation for some operations and the ports on the back for other. Magldr for my HD2 never works on the front.....
Like Rev say in their FAQ... there's something about the USB stack on windows that sucks. Not surprising really when we're talking about interop between such dissimilar operating systems (Android vs MS Win). Its gonna be a headache sometimes.
I'm on Win 7 32 bit, when I tested Revolutionary my device wasn't detected at all.
Rebooted many times, installed drivers and did lots of things and still nothing.
I changed USB port, and it worked xD
Try different USB ports and another USB Cable in-case
Gd luck
Edit: Just found out that you tried 3 different computers... Sorry then, if I come up with anything I'll tell you
Edit 2: Can't he try it on Safe Mode? Maybe it would help?
safe mose wont work, the usb stack works even less at that point :/ go windows!
worst case scenario, get a liveCD of ubuntu and boot it from BIOS, thats the easiest alternative to trying on windows

I'm having the exact same problem as with the poster of this thread. I've tried a fresh install of xp sp3 via vmware on my macbook pro. I've also installed Ubuntu but can't even get the revolutionary.exe file to open. Linux is too foreign for me, can anyone help me with that?
I had to use HTC sync mode in order for it to work on Windows 7 64 bit.

i also had this problem when i wanted to set my sensa s-off. i run the tool several times and i always got this error message. So then i plugged of the phone, plugged it on again and then the tool says my phone is already s-off.
i boot the phone into bootloader and yes, the phone was s-off, on top is the revolutionary text and the bootloader version is 1.17.1111

[Q][NEW USER] Cannot get my computer to reconigze my phone

Hey, I managed to brick my Infuse 4G trying to get Entropy's CM9 on it. I flashed it once and it was stuck on the samsung screen like it was suppose to but when I tried to go to CWM, I would get various colors, mostly blue and orange on the top and a big grey spot in the middle. I am trying to get it back to stock but I am having issues getting my computer to recognize that I plugged my phone in, neither Hermidall nor Odin recognize when my phone is plugged in in Download mode. I have downloaded Kies. Any suggestions?
If you had read any of the numerous other posts on this you would find that Kies creates issues so get rid of it and the colors are caused by the Froyo bootloaders on your phone, something that is fixed when you get GB bootloaders.

If you do everthing correctly and completely, it will get you to stock GB.
From there you can go to ICS and then if you want, to JB. Do not skip ICS and try going to JB. Hope this helps.

I tried installing the setup file in the driver and the computer still does not recognize my phone.
I have been without Windows OS for a couple of months and will be w/o for another 3 weeks, sorry.
You must uninstall kies and do not have your phone plugged in to the computer during the driver install. If I remember correctly, once you download the zip with the drivers to the computer, you have to extract them and then run the setup. Once that is done, reboot the computer and plug your phone into a usb port on your puter that you know to be working.
Should you go forward and use Heimdall, use the same port each time.
Again, I am assuming you are using Windows. With Linux there is no need to install drivers, it recognizes the phone. With mac- no idea.
Maybe try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1683036

The only thing you should have to do for Ubuntu to recognize the phone is enable usb debugging in settings on the phone and after that, enable it, most likely from your drop down menu on the phone.
Heimdall will be a .jar file - let me know if you need help getting it to open.

help with fastboot.

I previously unlocked my bootloader, installed oxygen 11 (am on beta 4) . I want to install PA but I can't get fastboot on my machine. Shouldnt it be as simple as instilling adb and fastboot as well as the oneplus drivers? I've done everything I can think of and the majority of times ,I ended with an exclamation point in device manager and couldn't get the correct driver installed. I tried SDK etc.. more so... Android composite adb isn't showing in device manager. I might just use my laptop.
Any quick ideas on how to fix though? Thanks
There are lots of guides and links to the minimal adb/fastboot packages here on XDA. I will say it's a heck of a lot easier on Linux or even Mac, but typically the issue is that you want to have your device drivers installed first, then connect your phone (switch it between charging, file transfer, and MTP modes and let it install each of them fully to the device manager while it's plugged in), then install adb, enable debugging, plug in, run "adb devices" and trust the RSA fingerprint, and let it install that side of things to device manager as well.
I'd start by uninstalling all of the instances of the device in your system first to start over. You might even try plugging it in with no drivers installed first to see if it loads working generic drivers.
Man, I do not miss Windows.
I've done all that, and now I tried my laptop and it's the same issue. Adb works fine, mtp works, just fastboot says "waiting for device" so frustrated.
I'd switch to linux if gaming was better... You think most games can run in linux? I am used to use it in the last before I started pc gaming and I really liked how capable it was. Creating bash scripts for simple tasks was great.. Windows really does suck. Getting fastboot working shouldn't be this much of a hassle and it never has been so I don't know what's wrong. I've uninstalled drivers multiple times now and still can't get anything. I'm Wondering if it's this latest release of Windows...
Make sure you have the latest Android Platform Tools installed...

Try revoking all adb authorizations and then try to plug it in and run "adb devices" to regenerate an authorization maybe? Is the problem only with fastboot or is adb also broken? You are running fastboot commands in the bootloader instead of adb commands, right?

Any luck? I'm having the same issue. Just managed to get my phone unlocked from tmo, and for the life of me can't get windows to recognize my device in fastboot. After an uninstall of the device in device manager, and plugging it back in fastboot. It appears under other devices as simply android with a question mark icon top left, and a yellow triangle bottom right. Manually pointing to either the drivers from 15 sec minimal adb & fastboot google drivers, or selecting all devices>have disk>and pointing too the inf of the driver downloaded straight from google results in the yellow triangle going away, but the question mark still remains, and it's still listed under other>Android. So I suspect for some reason or another the drivers aren't installing properly. Usually (having to have to do this with other devices) has worked in the past. I've had win 10 mess up loads of things most notably my dl speed once. Some bug had it capped at like 24 kb/sec (shudders). Just for comparison what Windows version are you on?
Tried dl ubuntu to boot from usb and try that. Then I ran into issues dl the iso. Couldn't catch a break yesterday I guess. I'll try again after work today, and report back. Don't like the idea of having to boot linux just for fastboot. Might a vm, but I'm not sure that would work considering windows doesn't recognize the device to pass it through, but we shall see. I will say this just about over win10.
Also Idk if it matters, but I had Android studio installed before this as well. Might be time for a fresh install it's been a while.

msm tool (on virtual machine)

hey all...i need help did anyone been able to succefly msm his phone on a virtualbox? i had setup everything on a win7 wnd win 10 machine every driver and all so the msm detect my phone and all and its says conected but as soon as i press start boom "sahara conexion failed" its driving me nuts i have tried everything drivers the + and power button nothing work.....i need help urgently
so here is the conclusion after long testing msmtool does not work on virtualisation i tried (virtualbox and qemu/kvm)....my problem was almost similar to this
crispy-cat said:
So, my phone's bricked - it won't boot, just brings up fastboot. As the solution to this problem appears to be to use the MSM tool to do an "actual" factory reset, I downloaded the MSM tool, and the decrypted ROM from this link: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=8889791610682918291.
First I tried this on a Windows 7 VirtualBox VM (I use Ubuntu on my actual computer). The drivers didn't even install right it seems, and the device (in EDL mode) wasn't even recognized. Then I tried it on my mom's Windows 10 laptop. MSM never showed the device as connected. I think possibly the lack of a USB 2 port could be the cause.
Finally I set up a basic VM with Windows 10 and a USB 2 controller, and it worked-ish. MSM recognized the device, showed it as connected and started doing its thing, but stopped at "Sahara Communication failed". What is preventing it from getting past this? I'm using the cable provided in the box. Everything is recognized correctly. I've retried multiple times but still the same result.
SUCCESS!
I had a spare laptop lying around, and it has USB 2 ports. I loaded WIndows 10 onto it and tried the MSM from there -- AND IT WORKED!
As much as I hate Qualcomm for their monopolistic business practices, I thank them for EDL mode. I also thank OnePlus for somehow failing to prevent the MSM tool from entering the hands of the public every time, and @Some_Random_Username for trafficking this good. Yeet!

The USB controller is part of VirtualBox. I think you need to download and install the extensions pack for the USB 2.0 version. The problem is that the controller is not capable of the absolute direct communication that the software needs to work, or it just doesn't connect fast enough. This would be a great example of why Windows on a USB would be great, since you could just boot it. But then MS wouldn't be able to make its billions. So we lose.
I'd try VMWare and KVM to see if they do any better. I'm not sure if WINE supports USB passthrough or not. Otherwise try to find a Windows box you can use.
