[Q] Kernel & Baseband difference? - General Questions and Answers

I´m pretty new at this so... as the topic hints; Whats the difference between Kernel & Baseband?
Is the kernel like the core of the Android OS, and the baseband (kernel too?) is all the drivers for 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS and so on?

Yes, you got it quite correct. The kernel is the core of the system, while the baseband controls all communications for the device. Seeing that you are new here, you may want to read here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466228 (it can help a lot).

Actually, unless you're talking about iOS, the kernel actually controls all that. The baseband is merely a piece of firmware (a type of software), that controls the radio in your phone. The kernel has all the drivers for everything else, including camera, bluetooth, and wifi, built into it.
In the case of iOS, the baseband actually has the drivers for various hardware components built in, go figure... exact opposite of android down to the code

Thank u all
Thank u all! I've learned a lot here.

thanks for the information... was updating my Atrix 2 firmware and was confused as to what a baseband was... this cleared up my doubts... :victory:

Does the baseband serial number (XXLPS) needs to match the Kernel Serial number (XXLPS)as well?

ROM and Baseband
Do we need to match the ROM baseband and installing it.. IF I have a device samsung 7300 and any ROM which is for 7300 will work on my device?

rom
is the base band necessary for installing rom on android device?

not instructive

The definition there (for BASEBAND) is a rip off from wikipedia (or viceversa). Also, it is hardly useful for people just wanting to flash once or twice :silly:
How can we update?

Yes it works.

Now these are clear to me.. I have rooted and updated so many phones. but now only I know:cyclops: what the base band is. Thanks

Do you need the latest baseband to get the top speeds? I update mine and have 3g but on a phone without a changed baseband gets 4g. The changed baseband is on a sprint galaxy s4 getting 3g and the unchaged galaxy s3 gets 4g. Why is that? Do I need to downgrade my baseband for better speeds?

Can I flash a t-mobile baseband on a AT&T d800 if my carrier is t-mobile or do they Need to match?

The baseband for my device, is it device specific, hardware specific, or universal? I mean, will a baseband found from an MTK6582 chipset phone work on another phone with same chipset?

this is not related to the baseband
it's about the phone pieces (hardwares) so u have nothing to do about it

Questions about flashing radios

Sorry about all this, but I have some questions that hopefully someone can help me out with.
First, is there a thread somewhere that has all the available usable radios? I ask because I noticed that a lot of these roms state that you should use a specific radio for their roms?
Will flashing a new radio every time you flash a new rom break something...like gps, data etc.?
Also is the current stock radio listed anywhere?
My radio is listed as : 12.39.60.19P_26.06.04.06_M ... is that this the current stock radio?
Thanks

1. Yes currently it resides in the Desire HD section, because these phones are virtually the same with a few exceptions. I will post the link as soon as I find it.
2. the possiblity is there but to my knowledge this isn't a general problem.
3. Yes it is listed and if I remember correctly it is the stock radio.

I'm a bit curious...
My radio is listed as 12.39.60.19U_26.06.04.06_M (since I've used the hack kit with provided radio).
What is the difference between the P and the U at the end of the baseband model number?
Thank you for the radio thread think, that's excellent.

I've seen this a lot around this forum. It seems people get either U or P when flashing the stock radio. Even more interesting, when I flash back to stock with the RUU I get an H. The MD5 of the radio in both the RUU and the hack kit are the same though, so I've been curious how we get different revisions of the "stock" radio?
Hmmmm....That is interesting...
I used the attn1 hack and twopumpchump's v1 ROM and my radio is the P also. I wonder if there is any differences in the radios due to the H, P, or U codes .
Maybe that is why some people have problems with their GPS working with the different ROMs and others with the exact same ROMs don't have any GPS problems......Hmmmmm......

Newest Gingerbread version for Samsung GS 2

Hi, I am currently running V.2.3.4 on my Samsung GS 2. The phone is unlocked purchased on Internet and I am with AT&T in US.
My question is how can I get 2.3.5 or higher if it's official released by Google says for UK but not for US. I don't even know Google did release it in US or not.
If not, can I still do it and where can I get it?
Any reponses would be appreciated.
Do you have the international or the AT&T version? The international version has 2.3.6 already.
You can find out which version you have in the system information. The international version is the GT-I9100.

Thanks for replying. My carrier is AT&T but I bought the phone unlocked online so it is the international version ( no AT&T name on it ) Is 2.3.6 official release or simply a beta?
Thanks
Official release. However it's not available to everyone through KIES yet. I don't know why. Maybe because Samsung handles updates crappy or because KIES is crappy.
You live in the US so I'll find a suitable update for you (English language and such). Just give me some time. I REALLY need to go sleep now. Just tell me what CSC you have asap. The best would be if you post your output of the System-Information from Android. Kernel, Baseband,....such stuff. Do you use Windows, Linux or OSX?

I got the 2.3.4 from KIES yesterday but every body is talking about 2.3.6 ( may be in some countries )I would like to get the newest one of course. If Google didn't release for US market then I'll get it myself.

In that thread it is. And if it isn't, kies would have notified that there was a further update (so logically, it has to be).

Remember there are many variants of the Samsung Galaxy SII. Some have that update (as shown in the thread), some don't (like yours - XWKI4 (KI1)). You could interchange if you want to; See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301772.

That's right, but if he tells me what CSC he has, he might has luck. There is a 2.3.6 firmware with multicsc and if his is amongst them, he can safely flash it, because it's english anyway.
If he has no luck, he still has options:
Wait for an update or go with MIUI or CyanogenMod and therefore 2.3.7.

Interchange? Meaning I can still use the 2.3.6 that is suppose for other GS 2 right?
GT-I9100 is GT-I9100 so the firmware will work on your device. But depending on your CSC, you might get problems with mobile data and such.
CSC is a problem in stock-roms only. Custom-roms just work, so those are an alternative too. You can always flash back later.

TheSniperFan,
So which firmware that I should get I mean the stable one of course. Can you post me the link for download if you happened to know.
Thanks
P.S. I've done the upgrade on my wife's Samsung Galaxy 3 I5800 one time ( from 2.1 to 2.2 ) The phone was not for US market as a result I could not get updates but I found the firmware & instructions online and finally got it done.
I just saw quite a bit of people in Android forum complaining about 2.3.6 causing battery drainage after the upgrade. Is it real?

Let me check this. I can't tell now, because I've never used 2.3.6. I used 2.3.7 right away and now my ROM is based on 4.0.1. If the battery is a problem, I'll find you a 2.3.5. one.

EDIT:
Indeed many people on the internet complain about that battery-life got worse. Here on xda and various different sites. I think you should go with 2.3.5 then. It's still an upgrade and people like it.
The latest one for you should be this one:
XWKJ3
Android 2.3.5

Firmware upgrade FAILED! HELP!
I was upgrading my GS 2 from 2.3.4 to 2.3.5 by following the links provided here some how the upgrade failed. In the mean time my GS2 STILL SHOW DOWNLOADING and said DO NOT UNPLUG THE CABLE so I waited, waited I think it was more than 12 to 15 min finally I unplugged it, the phone was still in downloading mode and didn't respond to all buttons so I removed the battery, tried back the downloading mode again then it pops up the message " Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again "
But Kies said " Device not responding. To resolve the issue reboot the device " which I've tried a numerous time and nothing happen. Can some one help please!!!
Thanks
UPDATE:
I just got it fixed. While I was waiting I decided to go ahead to do whatever it takes what I did was re-do the process by opened up the Odin on PC suprisingly the downloading bar on phone & Odin both appearing while the " Firmware upgrade encountered a issue Please use KIES for recovery mode " message still there and Odin said it passed, the phone rebooted and I checked the version which is 2.3.5 I also checked all my files nothing is lost. How & why I have no idea may be some Android experts in this forum can tell me. Now everything is all good. I learned my lesson I should kept waiting before unplug or remove the cable/battery whether the process is succeded or not.

[Q] Which model is my Nexus S exactly?

Total noob here.I have a Galaxy Nexus S GSM phone running ICS.I do not know the exact model I have I suspect I am having the M200 variant. The guy who sold it to me in all probability rooted it to install ICS.I want to install Jelly Bean on it.My questions are(Please forgive the wall of text, I wanted to be as elaborate as possible)
1) How can I know if my phone has been rooted ? Can you install ICS without rooting and without an OTA update?I dont know what the previous owner did.
I found out that I have an unlocked bootloader. But When I try to install and run Voodoo Sound which requires a rooted device. It says
"Sorry, this device doesn't run a kernel supporting extended sound controls"
can I take it to mean the device is not rooted?
2) Can I find out definitively if my phone is M200 Nexus S?

Baseband M200KRKC1

I pulled out the battery and it just says i9020 on the back of it as well as the phone box.The box also says made in Korea and it was imported into Romania. (I live in India and i bought the phone someone imported into India )
MY IMEI starts with 3569 if that helps
3) I want to install Jelly Bean and no OTA update here.If I do not know conclusively if I am having M200 will it brick if I install 9020T Roms, I remember reading somewhere they are very similar and some early unofficial Jelly Bean builds for 9020T worked on M200.I do want to install Jelly Bean that is why I am looking at the Nexus Oneclick Tookit.Does it differentiate between M200 and I9020T builds?
Edit: I checked and I need to know model SOJU or SOJUK
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in Advance
I looked at these threads but I cannot conclusively say this is an M200 version

randomphantasmagoria.com/firmware/nexus-s/m200/
Now check this with someone before you do this but I think you can just go to settings>About phone>System Updates>check now
Ideally this should update to ICS 4.0.4
I think Over The Air(OTA) updates should be safe for your data and is ideal for people like me who are new to Android.Just get this confirmed with someone who knows about it and you should be able to upgrade.
I think you should be able to upgrade to ICS.My problem is different. There is no JB out for M200.
I checked with an app called android system info. It says my model is nexus S and priduct is Soju. On the factory image website of google, i saw a factory image JB for nexus S. Not sure what to do now. Also, i tried the OTA update, it gets stuck at the White triangle with green droid screen. I desperately want to shift to JB or ICS.

U sure it says Soju and not Sojuk?Mine says Sojuk. If only I had known it was so simple to find out my model
Just go to settings-> about phone and look at the baseband. The model is the one before the XX. e.g I9020, I9023, m200 etc
By the way there is no Galaxy Nexus S, it's just Nexus S or Galaxy Nexus, no combinations of the two.
If the phone is rooted you should see superuser in the app drawer.
Just use the search function to find out how to install jellybean on the m200, it's been answered

good day guys! please help me with my problem.
i have recently bought a used nexus s. i have acquired this phone because i know that it uses the wolfson audio chip and i want to make it a music player by using the voodoo sound app (this app needs root access). my problem is i don't know what version it is hence i can't root it for fear of flashing the wrong kernel and bricking the phone. i'm in the philippines so if the phone was bought here, it must be an i9020 international version. besides, there are no korean apps or characters present. i took a picture of the sticker under the battery and saw texts in korean and then it says SHW-M200K at the end of the first line. i know that this is the code for the korean version. so is it right for me to assume that i have the korean version? but then again in the fourth line of the sticker i saw text that says FCC ID: A3LGTi9020. this is the code for the international version so i'm confused. when i checked the settings, about phone, it showed android version as 4.1.2 and baseband as XXKI1. lately i saw a korean version of the nexus s and the baseband starts with M200..... however, my phone's baseband is XXKI1. i'm really confused please help me. i'm planning to root this using this toolkit but i don't know what's the version of my phone.

thank you for the reply brother hito. yes that's what i'm confused of because my baseband says XXKI1 and no M200 prefix.

As somewhere i read on the internet that you can change your baseband version by changing radio..
I'd take some of pictures of back but didn't get clear anyone of them, said i've no other camera so you can see mine one board..
You can check your IMEI number online and they will tell you what your model number actually is..

[Q] LG P999 info

Hi guys. Yesterday I got brand new LG P999 (T-mobile i think, On the box is LG-999,not G2X), although I live in Europe In settings options under about phone tab are following details: android version 2.3.4, kernel 2.6.32.9, built GRJ 22, baseband m6600a-scautnz-2.09720t (may212012)mp:trulge_08.09.02r_mdm, software version lg-p999-v10c-usa-xxx. When I try to update firmware through LG Mobile Support Tool it says that there is already latest version V10c. I dowloaded app GetRil form google play and it says that RIL is not compatible to existing Baseband. So my question: is there another/newer version of software version (like v20 or something), do I need to install adequate baseband and which one or just sit back, relax and wait for official ICS?
Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english
"sit back relax and wait for official ics "
LMFAO
oh man
ROFLMAO
i can't catch my breath from that one
Sent via G2x on CM7 b135.2 w/faux 52 kernel

Are you certain the phone is a P999? Take the back off the phone and look inside for the model number. What is it?

[Q] Port SM-G110B Stock ROM to S5301. Is it possible?

Hi,
The SM-G110B Galaxy Pocket 2 came out with Android 4.4.2 stock, so I'm wondering if it's possible to port this firmware to the old S5301 Galaxy Pocket Plus.
The hardware of both cellphones are barely different.
If it's possible, it will be a very good upgrade to the S5301 cause latest official stock ROM for this model is Android 4.0.4...
What you think about it?
Thanks!
UPDATE:
GSM Arena Comparison: gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=5461&idPhone2=4881
GT-S5301 CPU: Broadcom BCM21654/G 850mhz Cortex-A9

It would probably be possible to port the firmware but the devices (however similar they may appear) have differences within the chips they use making porting the firmware a very long, time consuming task which may result in a buggy, unusable firmware.
So yes it is possible but I doubt anyone will ever attempt/complete it. If you want the latest Android for the device I would look for a Cyanogenmod ROM for it but it seems to be poorly supported on development.
