Hey guys, just wanna say, i'm a big fan of this community and its things like XDA that make the Internet the irreplaceable tool that it is.
Just have a quick question. I have noticed that CWM recovery has an option to just restore the DATA partition of a previous NAND backup. If i were to restore an ICS data partition from one ICS ROM to another ICS ROM from another dev, would it mess up the normal functioning of the phone?
Thanks for responses.
Yes it would, most likely not a good idea. Doing that is the same as not wiping between flashes, so it might work, but not very well.

Agree^
You could still try but if you so make a fresh backup first lol
If it does anything like what titanium backup does when you restore system data then it will probably just bung stuff up but I can't say for sure cause I haven't tried it
Pin it to Win it.

Hey guys,
I've been flashing Roms non-stop trying to find one that I like. The main problem I'm having with this is that I have to go back and redownload each app every time I flash a new rom.
I've heard people say that you should absolutely not use titanium back up, but they don't give reasons.
How do you guys do it? This is crazy...
Titanium backup is fine, just don't restore system data, ever. Restore MISSING apps with data and you'll be just fine.

Hey guys,
I recently bought an HTC One S. I came from an HTC Amaze 4G, and thus I backed up everything in Titanium Backup *AND* SMS Backup and Restore.
Thank goodness I backed up my texts in SMS B&R.
When I unlocked the bootloader and rooted the device, I went to install TB and restore missing apps and all system data.
I have never had this happen before, but when I rebooted the phone afterwards it said "Loading" on the HTC Sense screen and stayed there forever. It asked a few questions like Facebook login, etc. but still remained stuck on "Loading."
I eventually gave up and decided to take matters in my own hands. I figured that it's likely HTC Sense 3.6 data files were not compatible with 4.0 to a degree to cause issues, so I went into settings and cleared out the data for HTC Sense, and rebooted the phone.
When I rebooted the phone I was finally able to go into the messages app. Turns out I had a new text. NONE of my text message threads were there!!!
I am restoring them right now with SMS B&R.
I don't think this can be an ICS thing because on the Amaze I restored a TB backup the same exact way to a new ICS ROM and everything was fine. Has to be HTC Sense.
Anyhow, I just wanted to warn you guys. Don't trust a TB backup by itself from another device to the HTC One S. It may not work.
I see no reason to believe it won't work if coming from another phone with Sense 4.0, however I would be cautious and AT LEAST backup your text messages with SMS Backup and Restore.
It's still in the process of restoring. I am thinking that should surely work, but until it's done we won't know for certain. Will be certain to update this thread.
PS: I know some of you believe that you should never restore system data when going to a new device/rom (even though this is my 2nd post I've been lurking for quite a while :-D (as a guest)). I prefer to have all my stuff restored. If it causes a problem I am willing to go back and re-flash the rom

you cant restore system data from one phone to another, Thats a recipe for disaster. Even restoring from one ROM to another is risky...
Only ever restore apps and app data, Not anything else.. Ive been using TB for about 2 years now.. Never had a single issue with it

@ azzledazzle, did u see this? )
yes i saw it, but i dont get why you like to restore system data...
there is nothing of use in it if you are restoring using the same ROM, the data will be in that ROM anyway.
If you are restoring on a new ROM, you cant restore the old data lol
you like to restore system data, yet if you have troubles you wipe and skip restoring data..
Why not just skip system data altogether ?
You sound like you have OCD or something

System data saves the wallpaper, all icons, folders, etc. in the native launcher, alarms, etc. etc. which is not restored with apps. System data also saves the text messages, and restores them WAY faster than SMS Backup & Restore.
I've never had a problem restoring them until now. I tried one time not restoring system data, following the advice of someone on here who said it was pointless, and ended up losing system stuff. After that, never again do I restore without restoring system data.
Hello,
My girlfriend and I both have a Nexus S 9020a. Both are rooted, both are running SlimBean but with different radios and different kernels.
Her phone is starting to act up a bit, and since I did a fresh wipe recently I'm in a position where I can create a fresh Nandroid backup with all of the apps we both use. (Swiftkey, Nova Launcher, etc). If I create this backup through the recovery console, can she use it to restore her phone and essentially make a duplicate of mine?
Failing that, what's the Android equivalent of reformatting to freshen up her Android without reflashing a different rom? Clear Cache+Dalvik?
I think you would get an.MD5 mismatch with CWM and would not be able to restore. With TWRP you have the option to skip MD5 check but restoring on our phones with TWRP is kinda bugy and for me does not restore any data. Does that sound right forum? I would just take the extra few min and wipe/restore traditionaly with hers.

You could also restore data only from her phone using cwm. It's under advanced restore in the backup and restore menu.

Restoring from another phone is not a good idea. Will lead to many device specific issues. Just take the time, do a complete wipe. and she will love you for it.
Many thanks for the replies, guys. I did end up doing a clean wipe and starting her off from scratch. She's very happy with it.
BTW, both of us are now running the latest version of SlimBean with Bedalus Marmite V5 kernel, and are enjoying some absolutely amazing battery life. Very good stuff. Highly recommended for the aging Nexus S.
Hello
Do a fair bit of flashing/re-flashing of roms. Having to reconfigure all app settings, restoring text messages is a bit of a pain/slight annoyance
Could I just reflash a new rom (i always do a wipe beforehand) and then just restore the data partition from recovery? Or is it better to restore from titanium etc?

I'm not sure if that would be stable unless it was restored to the same Rom/version. I'd stick with titanium. But from experience it's iffy at best working correctly

You can use nandroid manager if you don't like titanium but yeah restoring data is like you didn't even wipe it in the first place. It may work AOSP>AOSP and Sense>Sense but AOSP>Sense and vice versa likely won't work at all or you'll have ridiculous fc's.

I highly recommend Titanium. It's super fast and easy to restore everything once you get used to it. I'd be much more hesitant to flash ROMs frequently without it. You should also consider dropping the six bucks for the paid version to support the developers of the app. It's more than worth it - one of the top 5 apps any rooted user should have.

Titanium ftw.

I'm with all the above, use Titanium for restoring apps and app data.
Restoring the data partition is almost sure to result in random and severe bugs (unless the new ROM is very similar to the previous). As said, its like not wiping (factory reset) at all.
Ok so im a long time rooter but first time rom installer on my main device, every time i have installed a custom rom it has never been on a main device so backups were never an issue...i want a custom rom on my samsung gs3 4g cus im sick of touchwiz, just wanted to know, if i do a full nandroid backup, will that be a full backup likr itunes does with a restore from backup? Like all my apps, settings, etc etc will be in the same place as before? I need to have a security blanket and make sure all my stuff is safe
Yes, it is. Everything would be back up. When you reflash it again, everything would be the way it was. But I advise you to backup one in internal and the other at external. Happened before where my nandroid backup failed and I have to use an earlier, older back up.
