[Q] Confusion about international model - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I have a S2 LTE i727R coming in from rogers some time next week and i had a quick question concerning the international model.
from what i've read, the R is only referring to the baseband and the modem that comes with the phone, flashing a new modem will change the i727R to i727 -> comptible with AT-T roms?
Does rooting the i727R work the same way? Using the odin/superoneclick to root it? I'm a little unsure whether odining the rooted ATT stock will conflict with the device, or is it safer to run with the superoneclick, root it, download CWM, and then proceed from there?
flashing a new rom does not unlock a phone right? I would still need to proceed with the IMEM number with an unlocking service, get the 8 digit code, and then unlock it the regular way after pulling out the SIM?
Thanks
L
my current plan right now is to get the phone, root it with superoneclick, and then proceed to download and flash recovery, and flash nexusmod4 (i prefer the aosp framework to the samsung one) while i wait for CM9/MIUI4 to be ported over. is this a sound plan?
do the supercharger v6 + thunderbolt tweaks work on top of the 727 roms? They added amazing responsiveness to the infuse i have, i was hoping they'd do the same for the skyrocket

There is a sticky in the dev section that answers all ur question in detail, but yes, superoneclick works and so does v6, thunderbolt no, do not use. Superoneclick is not needed. Flash cw through odin and then flash darkside. Flash nexusmod and away u go. There is no difference excepy that R, I'm on rogers too and have flashex every rom available for our phone. I also recommend u download ucla3 radio from silver

Thanks. I was just confused because that sticky didn't explicitly explain whether the canadian version had any differences. I got worried after i read a ROM OP that said "rogers users flash at your own risk, AT&T is working fine".
thanks for the heads up about thunder bolt.
Can recovery not be flashed through the regular rom manager method?
Doing some searching on darkside, is that necessary to flash? It looks like it's just an automated script to wipe the system/data/cache twice?
i install the radio after successfully flashing a ROM correct? some of the instructions in other threads have mentioned flashing the radio before doing the factory reset?

u don't have to factory reset after a rom install, actually in most cases u shouldn't, ics being the exception. Darkside is HEAVILY recommended, it prevents a lot of problems and has helped solve them. Personally I don't use or recommend rom manager, I have seen it brick many a phone, but that's ur preference. I personally flashed cwm through odin and never looked back

[Q] At&t Samsung Infuse 4g, Gingerbread 2.3.6, Wont Root, SuperOneClick 2.3.3.0

Hello,
I recently upgraded my AT&T Samsung SGH-I997 (Infuse 4g) to the new GINGERBREAD.UCKL2 (2.3.6) version using Kies-Mini.
Now...
I got SuperOneClick v.2.3.3.0 to root the phone, just as I had done before with Froyo.
I made sure USB Debugging was on.
I started SuperOneClick and clicked ROOT
I plugged my phone into USB (Did not click to connect)
SuperOneClick freezes on Step 7.
I have tried every method out there to get around this.
Ideas? Thanks.

SOC has not been reported to be a good tool for root.
I recalled 1 user reported success with repeat attempts.
You can try:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582
Try a few times...see if there is a zerg rush option also.
Let us know.
edit...nvm...doesn't work...only up to 2.3.5

Tried the method linked to above twice to no avail. Each time the process is apparently run without a hitch -- and the phone automatically reboots. But there is no root access when I check using root check or trying to run Titanium BU. If anyone has any other ideas, I'm all ears. I'd like to get rooted....
yes please be a guinni pig. but i dont have high hopes for rooting without a non secure kernel.
now that the bulk of users arent scare of gb since it became official it would be nice to see if anything will root it other than a kernel (the kernel swap is fool proof but annoying with all the lagfix and sdcard mounting weirdness that we have right now, need sources and devs... lol)

Yeah, I tried it on my newly updated (to 2.3.6 build) Infuse about half dozen times (via SOC), to no avail. Gave psneuter exploit a couple tries too. Oh well.

you're right. up to uckj4 was possible.
I wasn't paying attention to the last .5 to .6 change after uckj4
I am in the same boat. I didn't do the research about the ease of rooting prior to moving to gingerbread. I have been waiting intently and checking often for this official gingerbread release.
So far I am noticing tremendously increased battery life. I could normally run 8-10 hours and with the same usage I am getting 14-16.
I miss my root terribly- I use it to Wifi Tether for my laptop among many things.
I am willing to be a tester, I have no experience with rooting or flashing beyond SOC. I am an old-school blackrain/redsnow guy from my iphone days so I get nervous with all this "flashing kernels" talk.
Any advice for a novice wanting to enjoy some gingerbread goodness without sacrificing root?
Any recommended kernels to flash to for the infuse? I want it to be as close to stock as possible without losing features or my newfound battery.
Root FTW!

Try Zeus Build 5.2 stock or Victory or Leak Uckl2 rooted. There are all uckl2 based. As Close to stock as possible.
I wonder if downgrading to older rooted firmware and then using CWM, applying a zip format of the UCKL2 rooted ROM would work? Just a thought...
I don't know if this method works.
Flash a custom kernel with root on it. Then flash back to stock kernel. Worked when leak came out, so I don't see why it won't work with this since they're identical.

It's strange you say that... My battery life was excellent (before update) and is now dreadful. I'd love to go back to stock Froyo if I knew how...

yes that would work. but you could also flash the rooted leak with a flashtool like odin or swap kernels around with a flash tool like odin or heimdall since you will need it to flash stock anyhow....
im working on it, seems answering the question isnt enough, i have to make it simple and all parts in one place with a unified instruction set and a large banner that says "root gingerbread update!"
That sounds awesome Dani. I don't mind the idea of trying out something like Zeus or Odin. I love Greek and Norse mythology so these names really hit home. I guess I just need the proper files and a "hold my hand and walk me through" for the exact scenario I'm in. Thanks in advance for all the replies and suggestions.

this is true but some people prefer stock (odexed and all) and its not totally unreasonable. I'm running Zeus myself. and it is quicker than other kl2 builds I used. I have all the stuff I want to put together but I'm juggling time with watching my nephews, fixing my car and later the big game and I have to test every thing in there too. I'm a bit slow but ill get everything together before tomorrow I'm sure.
Hello I'm fairly new to this mod stuff. I had a Captivate and used SOC without a hitch. Never had to flash anything well not that I know of. I'd like to root my Infuse to really get rid of all the bloatware and put on an ad blocker. Can someone run down the steps of how to flash my phone or point me to a good link? Much appreciated

hang on. they pulled the update and will release another one.
bassicaly you can flash a Rogers based custom kernel for root but the sdcard mounting and video and wifi is all different and depending on the kernel you flash may not work. the more recent version of these kernels have workarounds in the boot scripts and will fix the sdcard and wifi, the video is a fix you gotta do yourself and the Rogers phone doesn't support HDMI so that is lost. the best thing to do is flash a custom kernel for one boot and flash back to stock. I was making a cwm package to flash the kernel to stock but had errors in my updater script. I can fix it but I'm waiting on the next update because I don't feel like doing it twice. I figure if someone truely needs root they should be able to follow the Rogers root thread an get through it.
if you want to do it manually you will need the stock kernel and a custom kernel like the Rogers root kernel. and you will want the ultimate unbrick package (just in case) and a copy of Odin3 v1.7 or v1.82 or heimdall. there is an Odin flashable copy of the kl2 kernel floating around somewhere. maybe in the numas rom or Caty rom thread but if not it can be extracted from the package from prezkret and zip'd and flashed with sgs kernel flasher.
when. you have all the parts, open odin and load the custom kernel into the PDA slot. the kernel must be in a tarball. that's an archive with a ".tar" extension. it may also be in a ".tar.md5" put the phone in download mode (shut down the phone and hold volume+ and volume- and insert the USB cable) when you see the android with a shovel start the flash.
reboot the phone, then flash the stock kl2 kernel. (don't flash the kg3 kernel from the Rogers thread or a froyo kernel) if you have the stock kernel in a .tar or .tar.md5 flash it the same way as before. if you have a zImage only then zip it and flash it through sgs kernel flasher from the market.
Any luck how to root 2.3.6 ?

You should use the search function of the forum. All of the questions you asked have been discussed many times and I find it hard to believe that you looked because many of the questions you asked are stickied or are still on the first page. I'm telling you this because there is a lot of information to cover on your questions (many of them could possibly have several different answers) and the easiest way for you to get all of the information you need is to look at what people have already said and done. There is even a "One Stop Shop ICS" thread that is stickied in the DEV section. Nope, I can't believe you even tried...but good luck and read as much as you can. Short-cuts will only get you a bricked phone.
well i have read alot and i think that may be my problem. i have read alot on android 4.0.3 and i have found info that the nexus got it first and this update is way different for the skyrocket. like the user interface is way different. cant seem to find a straight answer on it as people seem to be split on the user interface. thats why i wanted someone who has actually installed it to kinda point me in the right direction on some of my questions. i dont mind reading info but im new to this sight and am just figuring out how to search for info on xda. typing questions in google has gotten me only more confused. ive had good luck on xda in the past and trust the info on this site above any other. if you could copy and paste some links i dont mind doing my own reasearch as a matter of fact i had rather that way i can download what i need as i go..... thanks

Start from the top and work your way down. If you have an I727 I would definately only research ICS on the I727 and not any other phone. As you said, they are different. You will also find that there are no 100% answers on a lot of your questions. What works on one phone might act a little different on another. That is why it is better to read and be prepared...just in case.

If you use the "Odin" version (One click Odin with the ICS leak) you will need to put cwm back on your phone via Odin. If you use cwm to install one of the custom ROMS you will retain cwm. Directions on how to put cwm back on your phone can be found in the "DEV" section. If you use the ODIN method you will need to re-root anyway, I prefer Copperhed's method...again, found in the "DEV" section. Good luck.

Do not try to flash TAR files through CWM. Only ZIP files (approved for flashing with cwm) can be flashed via CWM. TAR files are for ODIN. I suggest you learn more about the differences before trying anything. There are very direct and clear directions for all of this in the different XDA skyrocket sections (mostly in the "DEV" section). Do yourself a favor and take a week or two to do some reading and learning. Good luck.
reasearch
from all the reading i been doing all day from the everything ics forum its best to flash the odin one click first then flash cwm again and install your choice of custom roms [zip files] since im on gingerbread now. something with the modem and radio is giving alot of problems unless you flash the odin one click first. im gonna take your advice and do alot more reading before i decide. i had a captivate before i got the skyrocket and flashed many different versions thru odin on it but have never flashed a rom with cwm before. so odin or heimdall is not new too me just cwm. but now that i found out about cwm and the way it can backup roms ill never be without it again. its kinda like having life insurance it there if i screw up lol.. thanks for helping me and if i run across anything else im not sure about ill ask cause its better to ask than to mess it all up... ill let you know what i decide and how it turns out... thanks again
Well I made up my mind and flashed the odin one click leaked update of ics. Then used odin to flash clockwork mod and used cwm to then root and make a backup of ics just in case. I restored my apps and data using titanium backup and never lost any data not even on the games I play. Oh and if anyone is wondering this ics update flashing cwm and rooting did not trip the flash counter none of it did. From what I read the flash counter only moves when a custom rom is flashed and this was not a custom rom but a leaked version of stock rom to come. Also flashing cwm does not trip the counter cause you are only flashing a recovery image and not a custom rom and the root didn't cause you are not flashing anything using this method... thanks to all for the help I could not have done this without those who pointed me in the right direction..

Can I use Odin to FLASH the Rogers release of ICS on SGS2?

Hello Xda forums,
I've read and used these forums to much success in rooting, flashing a custom ICS rom before, and fixing a soft-brick in the past.
Lately my SGS2 from Rogers hasn't been cooperating with Kies and I've tried every solution I could possible find in order to fix this to get the official ICS release from Rogers, to no avail.
I was wondering if it's possible just to flash the stock ROM of ICS from Sammobile as a workaround to upgrading through Kies, and would I have to wipe data and re-install stuff like CWM and the like or will those stay on my phone through the update?
Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated
Thank You.
Yes you can use the Odin version. You will lose root and cwm. I always wipe before using Odin or a cwm fresh base install.

Skyrocket n00b questions

I'm finally free of my Verizon/HTC Thunderbolt and I just ordered a used Skyrocket (using StraightTalk) and am trying to sort out the best route to get rooted/updated/etc/etc. Can someone correct me if I am planning on doing something wrong or out of suggested order?
Here goes...
1. Update with the latest OTA ICS update
2. Install custom recovery
--is CWM recommended?
--Can I just install it directly from the Rom Manager app? I keep hearing about ODIN in a lot of the guides, but that seems like an outdated method?
3. Root
-- It appears that the easiest method to do this is to just flash a superuser zip file from recovery.... I found one in a guide named icsSuperuser-3.0.7-efghi-signed.zip for example
4. Update radios? Should I leave these alone if I am already updated to the latest OTA ICS?
5. Update kernel. What is the recommended custom kernel?
6. Update ROM
-- I may just debloat the stock rom myself, but what ROMS are you guys running out there? I would like to overclock/undervolt and I do value good battery time so a kernel/rom combo that will allow me to do this is ideal.
Thanks in advance! Did I miss anything?!

Yes, CWM is recommended.
I used ODIN to flash it and currently run the latest Sky-ICS with UCLF6 radio and kernel. Don't use ROM Manager.
You need to visit each area of the Skyrocket sub-forums and read the stickies. In particular the ones by vincom in the development and Q&A areas since those are the most recent info.
The key to using odin is getting everything right on your PC, drivers, etc.
Many people find that using a different radio improves their reception. The usual advice if you are not satisfied with the radio on your phone is to try them one at a time to see what works best for you.
If you want to overclock and under-volt, IIRC, you will have to use the cymbaline kernel.
Which ROM to use is a personal choice. Read the threads in the dev area to get an idea of what each offers.
Hope you enjoy the phone.
Rooting, etc...

This is the best place to find the answer you seek. Listening to various answers is not something you should try if you are new to this sort of thing.
Vin has an excellent source for you that gives step-by-step directions!
Good luck with it!

Should I update my phone?

Hi, I have a Galaxy S2 LTE with Rogers - i727r (apparently it's called the Skyrocket in the USA) I really want to update it but I've been reading a lot of complaints about the ICS for this phone. Should I update or should I just root it? And if I should root it, which rom DOES NOT drain battery life and DOES NOT use up too much of my ram?
Thanks!
I have tried many roms... They are pros and cons to each and every one of them. But yet they are all outstanding. You probably don't wanna hear this, Flash a few and try them out. But you have to make the decision first to root...because without root, you're not flashing anything .
U don't actually have to root. Since Samsung was kind enough to leave the boot loader unlocked just flash a different recovery. U also have the added benefit with this method of no flash counter increase.
As for ics, I highly recommend skyics to get u started, and cm9 if ur feeling adventurous
