ok, so weird issue for me.. and idk if anyone else is experiencing it cause it doesn't seem like it.. I'm getting wifi error (and before anyone says anything about my router, it's already configured). It just won't turn on no matter what. I hit it, it says a grayed out "Turning On..." and then error again. No attempt or anything. I go into wifi settings and everything under Wi-Fi is grayed out, that's the network notification at&t wifi hot spot setting and wifi networks. I've been trying hard and absolutely no resolution. A google search only affords me more "fixes" for my router and that's not the issue. If i can get a referral somewhere else that doesn't talk about the router being the issue then i'd greatly appreciate it.

I've never heard of that error before so I don't know. Are you rooted? What version of Android are you running? What I'd do is backup all your apps, text messgs, contacts, etc., and do a factory reset and see if that fixes it. Worst case scenario you could flash a fresh new version of 2.3.5 via RSD Lite and you'd almost surely have the problem fixed, unless it's a hardware issue.
I actually started off on 2.3.5 with the issue, and then i started having problems with my ability to actually get past FB, so i had to do a the rsd fix where i force stock on there again. From that point since it still wasn't working I went and pushed ota which took forever and got onto blaze hoping/praying that it would finally work after that. ultimately nothing worked so I'm here now at the mercy of the forum hoping some guru might have something that I could try.

Wow brother, if you flashed the 2.3.5 fxz to it and still had the problem, i'm thinking there's a hardware issue.
yea, i figured. so i've already contacted motorola and since i'm still under warranty i can return it and they'll send me another one. them's the break, but i got 2 weeks before i even have to decide on that so its not something i'm rushing towards lol
Try going to adb shell
su
ifconfig tiwlan0 down
(toggle airplane on then off)
ifconfig tiwlan0 up
(toggle airplane on then off)
Maybe that will bring your adapter back up. Hope that helps.
hope this doesn't mean anything bad, but it says error no such device
i did adb shell in cmd prompt, it started up went [email protected] then i did su and it changed to [email protected] and i did what you said.. and it gave me that error
Had the same error problem a few ago using blaze v3 rom. After reboot, it was solved and I could connect to my wifi again.
Have no idea what caused the problem, as I didn't do anything out of the ordinary with the device since the update from blaze 2.5.

only once did i have problem with wifi on this phone and i never fixed it on 2.3 ...
after a lot of trial and error though, i got it fixed with upgrading to ics.
other than that, does your bluetooth do the same? because symptoms like these usually mean water damage. you might want to check the indicators, (if the a2 has any) --- if you broke your wifi by updating rom, this probably isnt the case.
I noticed that the description for the wlan interface is different in the build.prop between GB and ICS. So you might check your /system/build.prop.
Look for this towards the top of your build.prop
Code:
# wlan interface
wifi.interface = tiwlan0
softap.interface = tiap0
In GB wifi.interface = tiwlan0
In ICS wifi.interace = wlan0
So make sure the value is correct, if the value is wrong it will show your wifi "greyed out" in the settings. Anyway, it's something to try, and I hope that helps. If you change the value, make sure you reboot then check to see if it is fixed.
Since I don't know if anyone is still looking into this at all because I haven't seen many updates to this thread, I'm wondering if anyone has checked the kernal information. I was able to do some searching (btw I haven't sent in my atrix 2 in yet because of work) and I found that there was some issues in regards to the Kernal. I don't know if thats true or not but I would like to see someone test it out or try it out or what have you and see if they can shed some light on the situation because the situation is rather bleek, and i'd rather not have to send in a perfectly good phone that was working just fine before the flash, and still wouldn't work after reflashing the AT&T rom.

I have noticed a number of issues with the latest official firmware for the Rogers captivate. I think it would be a good idea to put them all in one place and try to start figuring out what common issues exist and perhaps we can address them all at once. Please state the issue, when it seems to happen, and what if any modifications you have made to your software setup. Maybe someone will notice a pattern or trend and we can get them resolved.
Thanks!

One major issue I have noticed is when updating apps through the 3.1.5 market. It seems to only happen when I am updating an app, not when I am installing a new app:
Sorry!
The application TwLauncher(process com.sec.android.app.twlauncher) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again.
At which point I have to force close it.
Also, I have experienced random shut downs, I will click the power/screen lock button to unlock the phone, and it seems the phone has shut itself off. If you hold down the power button it boots normally.
Anyone else experiencing these issues?

Voice for Swype
The voice command for Swype doesn't work.......
1. Speed dial no longer works. Says 'USSD code running' then closes and gives message 'unknown application'
2. GPS has stopped working completely.
As far as the launcher crashes, I don't use touchwiz. I do use Launcher Pro. It does seem to crash every so often. I've replaced all my widgets because I've read somewhere that this might help.
No random shutdowns here.
I talked to a samsung technical support rep and his captivate's swype voice input didn't work either.

GPS works perfectly on mine captivate 2.3.3 and I get better reception and locking time. But GPS will stop working if you flashed a custom Kernel on it! I know that because I tried it and GPS wasn't working when I had a custom Kernel, had to flash back the stock kernel.
Edit: I just tried Speed dial and it's working perfectly, I think there is something wrong on your phone.

I hadn't thought of that; I wonder if I'll lose my root? Come to think of it, I wonder if that's causing the launcher crashes...

Got the phone from Rogers with 2.1 then upgraded to 2.2 then to 2.3.3 (all done through Kies. GPS was ok but spotty on 2.1 and much better with Froyo but hoped Gingerbread would bring more improvement.
I've tested it since Rogers released 2.3.3 and on a few occasions I've even gone to the roof of my building on a clear day and waited for 45mins!! and nothing! Not lock then lose it but NOTHING! Speed dial I can live without but I actually use the GPS quite a bit.
Since upgrading I've done a factory reset 4 times and even sent it in for repair, which came back saying "upgraded SW and factory reset" which fixed nothing.
I've just rooted (just root nothing else) and I've tried to do use the gps code but I can't even get into that!!
What can I do at this point?

Yeah, with the 2.3.3 you can't access the gps setting by entering the code, because everything you enter the code *#*#3214789650#*#*, you'll get a message saying "Service mode has crashes blablaba...". The only that I found to bypass that was to go to market and install the app "Anycut" then launch it, select New Shortcut, Activity then choose Angry gps.
I'll look up what's the problem that causing you not to get a good gps signal.

Man I was going nuts trying that gps code. Googled and searched this forum and everything pointed to that code. Was ready to toss my phone off the roof!
Was reading these forums for the past couple weeks learning how to root/flash (just rooted today actually) to get gps working.
I'm guessing I might have to try flashing it again with the stock rom from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=979133 but gotta do some more reading before attempting it.

I use an app called GPS Status from the market. There, in the menu under 'tools', you can 'manage A-GPS state and wipe the location info the GPS has back to scratch. Then download the assistance data from the internet. This worked well for me and I do it from time to time to keep things current.

How long have you had the phone? The random shut downs is not a ROM issue. I am pretty sure it is a hardware problem. It was acknowledged by Samsung. There is even a list of effected builds. I am sure you could find the build numbers with a little search. I had this problem when I first got the phone last December but had Rogers replace it. If it is the same problem, I think you will notice that the sleep of death only occurs when the battery is like above 85% or somthing like that. It has been a while so I can't exactly remember.
I can't seem to get the firmware actually downloaded. I'm going through kies and it recognizes my phone, and recognizes that I need to upgrade, starts downloading the upgrade and at 12% it disconnects. I have two screen shots here that show what I am talking about.
Any ideas?

My captivate is still 2.2 and while connecting to Kies it says this version of the device cannot be updated.
Current version shows PDA: JL1/phone: JL1/CSC: JL1 (xxx).
I had rooted via Super one click and I can see Superuser installed. I havent used it for any purpose.
I removed my external SD card and did factory reset. No luck.

flash to stock 2.3.3 using the link in my signature. YOU NEED BOOTLOADERS coming from 2.2
First: Is it just me, or is Google Maps constantly running in the background? Not only is it constantly running, but there seems to be three different instances of it running in my background. Every time I open TasKiller, there's always 3 icons for Maps.
Second: Normally my wifi works, but when I'm at school I have issues with it. My school's wifi requires that I set the 'Phase 2 authentication' to "MSCHAPV2," but when I do that, it automatically resets it to default (which is no phase 2 authentication). I've tried all of the other options for Phase 2 authentication, and every time I close the wifi options, it's back to the default option. Should I use logcat for this?
Maps runs in the background no matter what ROM you're on.

I figured that it would start on it's own no matter what, but why are there three instances of it? Nevertheless, I'll try out Autostarts to have it stop coming up on its own.

I created a bogus wifi setup on the phone & I see the same issue; it defaults the Phase 2 authentication back to "None". I am not on Valhalla Black, either. I'm on stock 2.3.6 with bhndven's SMS kernel (3.1) so I think we're on the same kernel.
I don't want to say the kernel is the issue, though. Maybe someone else on here that is on a different kernel can try to create a wifi connection on their phone?
I'll wipe mine later and flash straight stock & see if I have the same issue. Might just be a 2.3.6 bug.

It's not anything bhundven has done to the kernel. Just tried it on my wife's phone and it's completely stock and I get the same results as you guys. After googling the issue it looks like most people were having a problem after upgrading to GB 2.3.4 and up. It looks like it goes further than our device.

Thanks for saving me some time Now the question is why.....
I wonder if its a problem with the certificates that are installed. Maybe they don't play nicely with Android?
Thanks guys for the responses at least now I know it's not just my phone. I'm visiting a friend away from home at the moment so I can't take any action right now, but once I get home, i'll try to google this a bit and see if I can find a solution.

Alright,
So I got the One X yesterday and the first thing I did was root it. After that, I followed the guides for removing the ATT branding, reactivating the FM radio, and removing the att wifi default network, and then theming and skinning it. I turned off wifi last night to test out the LTE network, and then tried to reactivate it this morning. When I say try, I click the wifi toggle and it replies "Error". Has anyone encountered this/knows how to fix it? Thanks in advance!
Happened to me once or twice...also happened to me a few times on my Captivate (running CM9).
A reboot should bring things back to normal. I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the wifi issues half the people here are complaining about since I haven't been paying too much attention to that issue.
Move up to 1.82 to fix the error. I had the same.
Tried reboots. No joy. Ill try to upgrade to 1.82, but it will have to wait until after class. What would be the best way to preserve application arrangement/theming, or am I SOL on that one?

Have a similar problem. Happened when I edited the wpa_supplicant.conf file in /data/misc/wifi. It was meant to prevent auto connect to AT&T hotspots but ended up giving me an error after a reboot.
To fix it, open the file in text editor and make a change, either add a blank line or remove one and save it. Also, delete the wpa_supplicant.conf.bak file in the same folder..
I have no clue why this is happening and one of the above steps may not be doing anything but when I do that, my wifi works again until next reboot.
Good luck
Thanks the update to 1.82 solved the problem.

You can delete /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf.
That may fix the problem. Somehow my wpa_supplicant became corrupt I guess and deleting that solved my problem.
I have a one S, but that shouldn't change much.
I own a HTC One S with stock vodafone (gb) rom, rooted, ICS 4.0.3, Touch 4.0. As I see a lot of people have similar issues as mine, however, I wasn't able to find a working solution. So the problem is that the phone stopped being able to connect to wifi networks - no matter if secured or free. I tried to change the settings from dhcp to static, stll nothing. It goes through connecting>obtaining ip address>authenticating>saved,secure... in whatever order, and the cycle repeats over and over... Sometimes bars appear, blink and disappear again. I had no wifi problems until last night, when I went to a place with free wifi, and for the first time I could not connect to it. After that the issue continued at home. Restarting the router/phone don't work. Has anybody found a working solution?

I rebooted the phone a few times (waiting 6 mins when off) without fastboot on and on the third time it started working. I hope this doesn't happen again... As I searched through the forums I saw a lot of people having similar issues mainly with dhcp.. hope there's a fix for that...
Problem appeared again... This time reboot isn't solving anything. When I put it on static IP it connects to the network and disconnects over and over again. This s*** is driving me crazy...
are you running a custom kernel?
No. It's stock. Recovery is CWM, phone is rooted via this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1577831
it could be the boot.img causing your issue. i rooted via this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1583427 and have never had a problem with wifi unless i had flashed a custom kernel
Well.. I don't know, because I haven't flashed a custom ROM.. Just rooted the stock one... Btw it started working again after like 10 reboots with no fastboot on, but experience tells me that it'll go crazy again...
you could also try flashing a custom rom, it might fix the issue
I have been on Sky ICS ROM for quite a while now, and it has the Google Now and voice search for ICS in it and it has worked up until a few weeks ago. When I voice search for anything, my browser will open and display an error saying "We're sorry, but your computer or network may be sending automated queries. To protect our users we can't process your request right now." Strange thing is, it's not consistent. Sometimes it will work fine, then suddenly gives me that error. I have tried flashing back to stock then reflashing Sky ICS from scratch...same thing. Any ideas what could be wrong? Is it my phone, or is something going on on Google's end?
I've had this problem happen to me a few times, not exactly sure what causes it but only (statistically) happen when I update CM10 with the OTA updater. If I do it manually and include clearing the caches it usually fixes it self, then after that I just fix permissions after reboot.
But yeah I've had that notice popup while I was on data.
Just noticed new quirk with it. It doesn't error out when I'm on WiFi, only when I'm on the mobile network (AT&T). Very strange. I checked the APN settings and everything looks good. Can't think of anything else that could be wrong.
I am STILL trying to figure out why I keep getting this message. I've tried full wipes, flashing back to stock, flashed both bases of Sky ICS, and I am still getting same error message more times than not. I have tried searching online and in these forums for any answers but can't find any. Seems to be either working for everyone else, or the problems they have had are different then mine. Am I really the only one? Does anyone have any ideas?

I was attempting to find the cause of getting this same message from google search. Same symptoms, works great on wifi, sporadically throws this error on data connection. Just so you know, I'm on an HTC Vivid, Holics ICS with Google Now, AT&T.
I am at least more confident that I am not infected with malware....
Still can't argue against you, xcrazydx.
Just FYI, not limited to your device...or mine it would seem....
