[Q] how do i change my density with adb shell? - General Questions and Answers

after a few hrs of figuring this out i finally figured out how to do the start menu run cmd. then cd/ then androidsdk/tools blah blah now im inside the sdktools thingy with the command thingy what do i do now do i put all of this adb shell
su
busybox mount -o remount,rw /system
busybox sed -i 's|ro.sf.lcd_density=.*|ro.sf.lcd_density=YOURLCDDENSITYHERE|g' /system/build.prop
reboot
in there then click enter? thats what the guy told me but he wasnt very detailed with the directions its the guy who made the app root tools the app that bootlooped my phone changing the density on my admire now i need to change it back wwhat do i do now that im inside the thing on the command line? plz im soooo close to fixing my phone

More info please!
We need to know the model of your phone and also, where it said YOURLCDDENSITYHERE you should have replaced that with the density you need. But I don't think you should be rooting your phone unless you have a big budget for new ones or you have phone insurance. Bad things are bound to happen.

i have a samsung admire sch-720 and my phone is already rooted :/ oh i knew bout the density thing i just copied and pasted his directions lol just told me in the command thing says that command isnt recognised or something like that

is there any hope for me?

Solved - Change root password

I used the directions from Jesus Freke to install the Mod RC30 on my G1.
Then I read and used the instructions provided by Stericson to change my password....
Only one problem! Now it won't let me access root with su or with my password. I wanted to use something generic first and if it was successful I would change it to a good password. So, I used my user name "shaneaus"
Now I get permission denied with both su and shaneaus!
Am I totally screwed? Is there some way to reset the password back to su. That wouldn't make sense, I know, from a security sense. Just hoping.
Thanks
I'm hoping that there is an easier solution.
But, if I flash the update... Will that reset the root password?
I don't know what happened but this can be remedied. First off, it is possible that when you change the superuser command you failed to chmod it to 4755...at any rate, you can solve this by plugging your phone into your computer and starting up an adb shell, this should give you root if you have the modded rc30. Next remount /system to read and write privileges
mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
now type:
cd /system/bin
ls
Do you see su or your username listed?
If so type:
chmod 4755 (type su or your username here, without parantheses)
now open terminal emulator on your phone and try your superuser command again.
If you did not see su or your username in the output of ls type the following to get a setuid shell:
cat sh > (username or su whichever you want)
chmod 4755 (username or su whichever you want)
now open terminal emulator on your phone and try your superuser command again.
That should get you going.
Ha!
I'm just beginning to learn how to do this stuff. I have no idea how to "start up an adb shell" or even what an adb shell is!
So, I guess I'll start researching on line!
Ok, so I've read up on the adb shell and think I have a grip on how to use it... Except I can't figure out how to get the darn thing started. Do I have to open up the emulator? I thought I would be accessing the device - not the emulator. But, most sites talk about using the adb with the emulator. Also, I have seen where I should be able to run adb devices.exe and have it show my device to confirm it is connected. Only one problem, I can't find the adb devices.exe in the sdk kit.
Oh, and thanks again to Jesus Freke for the 64bit USB drivers. worked like a charm!
Awesome! Y'all are fantastic! I learned a lot tonight! I did the following:
Add $SDK_ROOT\tools to my path
Then had a hell of a time because everything I was reading (except for one location I finally found said to run "adb shell.exe"
I finally found a site that said to run "adb.exe shell"
And, whalla! I was in.
Your above advise was spot on, Stericson! Thank you!
Glad to hear you got it sorted.

You should be thanking aziwoqpd for that, not me

i give up i spent all day trying to fix my bootlooped admire

all day it took me to figure out how to get inside the adb shell then when i typed adb shell
su
busybox mount -o remount,rw /system
busybox sed -i 's|ro.sf.lcd_density=.*|ro.sf.lcd_density=YOURLCDDENSITYHERE|g' /system/build.prop
reboot
nothing happens wtf someone told me while my phone is in system recovery its the same as usb debug mode i even downloaded some update.zip for my sd card which was in my laptop at the time using a cardreader then placed the sdcard back in my phone i do the apply sdcard:update.zip i get an error then i did a factory reset like a 100 times out of irritation all im trying to do is change my density back to the way it was using adb the guy who made the app root tools said i should use adb well he will never email me back i been at this all day i know its my fault that my phone is messed up but im beginning to think that u cant fix a bootlooped phone with no backup the guy told me i could but i cant

HTC One X Root Assistance

Hey guys. I just got my HOX and have been trying to root it. The software update keeps popping up and I keep refusing, so no worries there. I've got 1.85 right now and have been attempting the methods found here and here, but they just aren't working. I'd prefer to use the manual method. Someone willing to help a guy get started with all this would be the greatest person ever, just saying!

Could you help me too X( ? I got my HOX last night at 8pm; I traded my rooted S2 Skyrocket for it.
Been looking for the past day through forums and google. It's so different from Samsung's phones, but a nice change indeed.
I'm on 1.85 and tried those two methods also. I'm not very familiar with ADB. From reading all night and this morning, I believe I root, unlock bootloader, flash recovery, flash custom roms?

Thanks. I used this for ADB http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/what-is-adb-and-how-to-install-it-android/
I remember using it for my S2, but I don't quite understand the directions for the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296 method. Could you dumb it down for this HOX noob?

I'll try to help! all of the following is my interpretation of the rooting method described here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1709296
What you need:
HOX on ATT 1.85
su binary from http://dl.dropbox.com/u/don'tusemeimabadsubinary
EDIT: The su binary above has issues. Use this one instead: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/9060692/su
Make sure HTC sync is NOT RUNNING (down in system tray)
Make sure phone is set to "charge only" and usb debugging is enabled!
Download correct su file (assuming you don't have a problem with this step )
Put su in same directory as ADB. Get to adb command prompt and cd into that directory
Quote from Butters619: cd means change directory. It is a windows command prompt command. So you would type "cd C:\adb" if that was where your adb folder was. Folder and directory can be used interchangeably, although directory is more "correct". We only say folder because GUIs use folders to represent directories.
NEW - pull sim card
NEW - do factory reset
NEW - when reset is complete, do not replace sim, do NOT connect to wifi. Go through setup, go to settings, enable USB debugging. When that's done:
Enter these commands in adb:
adb shell rm /data/data/com.redbend.vdmc/lib/libvd*
adb shell ln -s /data/local.prop /data/data/com.redbend.vdmc/lib/libvdmscomo.so
(If you get file doesn't exist after the FIRST command don't worry - they may not be there)
Now, on the phone, go to settings and check for software update. It will tell you you need to connect to network. Now, replace the SIM OR connect to wifi. Have it check for software update again. When it's done, do NOT click "yes" or "ok" on the phone. Simply:
Enter these commands in adb:
adb shell ls -l /data/local.prop
IF AND ONLY IF you get "file not exists" or anything like that then set your phone's date 2 days ahead and reboot the phone and start over. If you get file info, you're golden. Proceed...
Enter these commands into adb:
adb shell "echo 'ro.kernel.qemu=1' > /data/local.prop"
Reboot via adb by entering this command: adb reboot
After phones reboots
Enter these commands in adb:
adb remount
adb push su /system/xbin/su
adb shell chown 0.0 /system/xbin/su
adb shell chmod 06755 /system/xbin/su
adb shell rm /data/local.prop
adb reboot
You should be rooted.

Thanks. Yeah i've been trying it alld ay but it can't find where my SU is. it's in the same location as the ADB stuff i believe C:\android-sdk-windows. Seem like some of the senior members are willing to go through teamviewer to help the ones who can't do it. I'll try asking them :/
Sorry I couldn't be of any help, but please let me know if/how you get this to work just in case this happens to me when I get my one x.

[question] adb / ubuntu shell scripting

so before i start i apologize if im just being lazy but if i have posted this somehow "wrong" or whatever i probally messed up but hey!
ok. to whom it may have answers,
first of all. i realize what i am asking is a "easySBF" but i would like to learn and write my own shell script that will do these steps.
(since this is just for me, my "required files" will be located for sure. and some of the script i got, its just some i dont)
1) adb shell ln -s /data/local.prop /data/preinstall_md5/magic.md5
2) i suppose this would require a "pause?" or whatever until it was ready to throw the next command at it?
3) sbf a custom preinstall image (sbf -r --preinstall dx.img 621.sbf)
4) have it wait for the boot after the flash is done? then reboot the phone one more time?
5) then if possible i want it to "adb shell" and check for a root prompt (# not $) ?
6) if it returns "#" (root) it would then go onto installing superuser files? if its "$" (not root) have it (if possible a countdown timer of like 10 seconds?) ask if i want to try again with another reboot or something. the timer would automatically send it into a reboot | return to #5
7) from here i have to send 6 more adb shell/push commands (dont know if i need to allow a "pause" or something between the commands to insure a working command?"
then if all goes well it would say something lame of course but ya.
i hope i am asking this in a readable way, if ive confused you (probally) then blame my upbringing or lack of concern for the english language
but if you can help then uhm. good looking out and either post it or pm me (makes it easier actually for me but anything is better than nuttin)
thank you in advance

unzip su.zip into the current path (directory) you are in.
adb shell
(while in adb shell)
rm /data/local/tmp/profile_calib_m
ln -s /data/local.prop /data/local/tmp/profile_calib_m
exit
adb reboot

No problem.
You actually left out a step. In order to push su to the phone you have to adb remount -o rw. Otherwise it is a read-only filesystem and it cannot be pushed to the phone. Most people would probably get this, but the novices who end up with bricked phones will be angry.
Great work!

Actually no, you are incorrect.
adb remount without the additional parameters is correct, and not possible of bricking a phone with adb remount. No novice would be angry, because there is not possible brick from this guide, as long as it is followed.

Yes I am a Noob... nobody likes me
I have exhausted every resource that I could find on this phone. I thought that this post was the answer to my problem, however it did not seem to help at all. Everything seemed as if it was working fine as I went step by step through the process. However, I rebooted my phone and there is no difference then when I started. The "su.zip" file enclosed in this post was not able to extract into the directory of my ADB client. It kept saying root already existed, but I was unable to see it in windows explorer? Is this "su.zip" a modified version of a pre-existing file in the SDK kit? I really need to unlock this phone so that I can clean up the junk. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Anyone know of a rooted ROM
I have looked all over, but it doesn't look like a dev has created a ROM for this device. Has anyone come across one? If I knew programming I would give it a shot, but it's a mystery to me. I know that CyanogenMod 9 for the L3 (e400) works, but there is a problem with the radios, hence no cellular, wifi, or bluetooth.

This guy had some success with CM9, but no radio. Anyone know how to extract the radio? I've never built a rom, but this is tempting.
