[Q] OTA updates on rooted XOOM - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

do I in fact need to unroot to get OTA updates or will accepting these simply unroot the device?

you need to unroot and lock ur bootloader and update if ur rooted it wont ever install it

You need to flash the stock files, but you do not need to lock the device to update. If you wait a few, I'm sure a rooted update will come out.

A friend tried the OTA with his rooted Galaxy Nexus and it soft bricked it. He spent almost a day getting it back to normal. I wouldn't recommend doing this with a rooted Xoom.

I tried it, just to see what kinda mess it would make. it simply halted on reboot

A rooted XOOM will not update because of custom recovery. If you have original Boot / Recovery (stock) the update will work flawlessly. Root will not be lost upon update.

[Q] Unrooted Phone Still Not Taking Update

My phone was rooted with unrevoked, then I went through the steps to unroot it. I am s-off on the phone and back to stock but I still get the ! message with the droid guy when trying to apply the latest update. What exactly do I need to change or fix in order to apply this update? PLEASE help!
It's possible that maybe your phone doesn't allow FOTA unless you're S-ON. I've seen weirder things.

If you are s-off then you're still rooted. S-on is unrooted. This shouldn't matter. Maybe your phone is different but Evos can receive ota updates while rooted. Your ROM however must be COMPLETELY stock. Not a stock ROM intended for a rooted device with busy box and super user but stock as in ALL system is unmodified.

Yup, as long as you still have the attribute S-Off on your phone, than you are rooted.
Connect your phone to PC and connect the HTC Sync software, then run the original RUU from the PC. That should do the trick.
Your problem might be that you have uninstalled or frozen some bloatware that came with the original rom. Apps that come from the service providers like vodafone apps etc.

[Q] If your phone is rooted can you still get the ota updates? And One more ?

If the skyrocket is rooted can you still get ota updates? If so How? I am new to this. And also what is the current OTA update?
If its just rooted yes and it'll remove your root if you are on a custom ROM then it'll tell you you have one but it wont download

If your phone is rooted when an OTA update is released, you won't be able to download it. Unfortunately one have to be on stock to be able to download it, with bloat included and everything.
It told me I had a update but said server was down then I went back to it today and it says my phone is up to date
From what I understand if you are rooted with stock recovery you can take the ota update. If you are rooted with cwm recovery than you cannot take the ota. The beautiful thing I think is than even if you are rooted with cwm, and an ota releases (that you for some wild reason can't wait to have) its easy as pie to flash back to stock. At that point you should be able to take the ota. Heck maybe even just flashing the stock recovery itself would do the trick.....I dunno
As for current ota, most of us seem to have gotten stuck with 2.3.5. But there were quite a few folks who received the 2.3.6 update.

cdshepherd is correct. I was on stock 2.3.5 with stock 3e recovery... and was fully rooted. I was able to take the ATT OTA 2.3.6 update and kept superuser root access.

+1. I got 2.3.6 and kept root access, too. I'm also on stock recovery.
If you are not SO interrested in OTA
cdshepherd is correct, but, when 2.3.6 came out a few weeks ago, several folks were able to get it posted somewhere as a RAR file. you might look around if you are just dying to have it.. I think it was back around 11/21/2011 when I saw it the first time. About 290mb if I recall correctly.
Good luck!

I was rooted and still allowed the OTA update 2.3.6.. and still have root access

Ok people heres the deal. To take an ota update you can be rooted but . You need to have stock recovery, and all bloatware intact. It can be frozen but not deleted. And no one knows yet if the 4.0 ota will remove root. 2.3.6 ota did not. So we can hope.

[Q] Nexus S Root

Hello Everybody
i jst wanted to ask... if i rooted my phone will i be able to get regular updates from google for my phone???... and will it cause any problems??
Thanks
am Using Nexus S 4.0.4 ICS
Others correct me if I'm wrong but you'll still receive update notifications from Google as long as you're just rooting the phone but if you do install a custom ROM you will lose the ability to receive update notifications. Extremely unlikely that you'll have any problems too.
You won't be able to officially update on a stock rom with root. You will receive the notification under these circumstances, though. You will be able to update if you remove any changes you have done to the /system partition, however (generally just busybox and superuser binary and app). You'll be able to update unofficially to the next version in no time, of course. Don't expect official updates any time soon, either, we've already got them
Nothing to worry about. Just note that because you're on 4.0.4, you won't be able to retain any saves/settings on your phone while unlocking the bootloader to root.
So i will be getting the update notification but it wont install.. i have to install it my self .. is that right???

You do indeed receive the available update but it fails to install under root and custom recovery. To install it you either go back to unrooted stock with stock recovery out wait for any developer to remove the stock recovery and flash it from CWM. Second option is the best in my opinion.

Wiping won't unroot I don't think, but root should not affect the update. You will lose it when you update, but there will probably be a way we can make some changes before the update to avoid that.
The supercharger script might be an issue but probably not. It should have an option to unsupercharge anyways, but you should be fine without it.
The update will check to make sure you have not deleted any of the bloat that is not removable without root. so if you have done that your best bet would be to fxz back to stock if it will not update.
Nopes....didnt remove any bloatware....ok so wont that brick my phone as uts rooted...i read somwhere in xda forum that an atrix 2 was soft bricked because the guy rooted
Normally if you are rooted and download and install an OTA update you will lose root. I always have. However, this handy free app has been tested and it says it will preserve your root if you OTA update. Check it out here: OTA Rootkeeper

that won't work for the ICS update. at least with the leaked international ones. No it won't brick you, you will just loose your root. If you wan't the updated to stay rooted, don't do it right away and give us a few days to figure out how to keep it.
Even if you did softbrick you could almost certainly fxz back to stock.
Thanx alot sir..... i wont update until an official update or till we get a fully working ics custom....no hurries

update to 4.3 unsuccessful ?

i updated my verizon Galaxy S3 (I535) today, and forgot to unroot it so expectedly i go the "unsuccessful" update, but it did update, i have the changes. but i cannot get into supersu so i cannot unroot my phone (never really used the rooting anyways)
is there anyway to unroot my phone atm? and/or to make sure i have the entire update?
(wasnt really expecting to get the update at all with a rooted phone)
also i cannot get into supersu cause my phone is still recongnized as 4.3 instead of 4.1.2
...not really sure what to do
Hmm, well you can root using SafeRoot according to multiple users in our general TW 4.3 thread.
Maybe you can unroot after you root using that but there's no way to downgrade or Odin flash a ML1 tar unless we see one published in the near future. If you unroot after rooting then you could probably try installing the TW 4.3 update.zip in recovery but there's no guarantees it'll work and if it messes up, you're SOL until further notice.
Edit: so its clear, you can ONLY root. Flashing roms is not possible or recommended as of this moment if on TW 4.3

if i could down grade i could unroot easily and then update

Nah, you'll have a hardbricked phone with seemingly no way to fix it if you attempt to downgrade. If/when VRUCML1 stock tar file is posted then you could flash that in Odin. What you'll need is something specifically for TW 4.3 whether that's root, root/unlock, or Odin. Nothing older is compatible.

I believe that by going to the OTA 4.3, you are no longer rooted. The update "unrooted" you.
Thanks Slim !!

SafeRoot was a success and I now have a rooted device. I just purchased this used and it did an automatic update when i turned it on. Pretty bummed about now being able to switch out the ROM, but at least I've got root now! saferoot is awesome!
