High battery drain with ANY custom ROM - HTC Sensation

Hey guys,
I have a one big fat problem. Ever since I installed my very first custom ROM a battery drain on my Sensation became unacceptable. And it doesn't matter if I'm using a senseless rom or not. I also tried many different kernels with no luck at all. I never had those issues when I was using the stock rom. It never gets under like 200mAh even while sleeping, and when woke it sometimes gets even to 1000maH(!) while browsing internet and such. So is there anything I could possibly screw up or forget to do that may cause this problem? Help would be very much appreciated as I am really tired of charging my phone every 4 hours

Firstly download a few monitoring apps, Use them over the next few days and try to find out whether its app related.. ( i use watchdog ) there are many out there...
Do not overclock your CPU, Adjust settings for battery performance, Such as auto brightness, Turning off wifi / gps / data / BT and such when not using... See whether this helps or not
finally, if the above steps dont find anything, Try and 'calibrate' your battery... To do this, Run the phone down to zero battery, then switch it on again just to make sure its completely dead and will not power on at all... Then charge it fully to 100% no pauses.. When complete, boot into recovery and delete battery stats.
If all of them fail i would start thinking that the battery may be faulty.. But most extreme battery drains are caused by one of the above

Please help me with battery and internet use

Hey, i have switched my Stock rom to the Energy rom (.sensity version). Phone was taken from recharger around 6:30 and around 15:30 energy has ended. 9 hours while on stock i could get more than 24. During these 9 hours wifi was turned off and backlight set to nearly minimum. I used 3G for around 3 hours and after that i turned it off using comm manager. Is it normal? How much can you get on energy rom? How can i control what applications are turned on and what applications are using internet connection? Maybe there is kind of gps turned on? And i am not sure if it comes to the email that downloads messages.
bumping the thread
I've had terrible battery life with Energy ROMs for the past year or so. Release after release, his ROM never improved and continued to add new but buggy software. The phone would end up warm even when in standby in my pocket or on my desk. It heats up even after resetting the phone and never interacting with it (ie. no apps are running). 3G and wifi are off and the radio and rilphone.dll match. I don't know what causes the phone to heat up but that heat production means the battery is getting drained.
I have happily ditched Energy in favor of Monfro ROM. The phone is now always at a nice ambient temperature, as it should be.
as above test other roms if you still draining battary life real fst then maybe its time to get a new battary. if thoses roms work fine then switch over to them.
also post in Energy roms thread for help.
I had the same problem with the battery life, but with me it was happening in the night, so one time i woke up in night my phone was extremly hot and it had lost 20% battery since 3 hours before.
By that time i used TAEL Rom, I thought it might be the ROM, so i changed it a few times using Energy and other popular roms, but the problem still accured.
Then i change my radio and the problem was gone.
Could be that you have the same problem, but you have to try different things. It could be the ROM it could be the Radio, or it could be your battery.
I would have to agree with LtGenHartman that changing the radio may help or solve an issue. If you have an unbranded and unlocked version of HTC Touch Pro then i would say to find the appropriate radio and flash it (but keep in mind that you can brick your device rendering it useless).
My device is a branded HTC Touch Pro (aka HTC Fuze from AT&T), and since the device is not unlocked I will brick my device for sure. The battery draining is coming from two areas:
1)WM 6.5 does suck up a little more battery life since there are more processes running in the background of the operating system. Devices that do run WM 6.5 natively may not have this issue since it is optimized to run on that particular device. Also, there maybe a larger capacity battery that a device is using so battery drain is no longer an issue.
2) HTC Sense UI does drain more battery. It is a combo of processes running in the background to run the UI. It is also that there are fancy animation like the weather and transitions. Try eliminating some tabs that you do not use (For me I eliminated Stocks, Twitter and Facebook). It will free up some RAM and it processes will decrease. This may indirectly affect the battery life. Try using the standard Windows Default aka Titanium UI to see if there is a difference.
For the actual battery, try draining the battery completely before giving your device a full, healthy charge before you go to bed. I notice a bit of a difference in my favor since I did that a few days ago. I read this will recalibrate the battery giving a more accurate discharge.
When you are not using the internet on your phone remember to switch off all the data radios (disconnect from the data network, switch off WiFi). I think its ok if your device is finding the 3G network but as long as you are not connected to it, no data is being constantly sent and received so the battery life should increase. Try also switching all your apps that do use the internet to a manual switch rather than auto updating.
Just remember the stock WM 6.1 ROM has less processes, TouchFlo3D has less animations and tabs to use and the ROM was optimized for your device. That is why you will be getting the best battery life results.
These are some tips for you to try out, let us know if this help any. I don't expect a massive increase in battery life but some does help and from my experience does go a long way.
Separate issue: I do notice that the battery reader is not as accurate either. I notice that if i reboot the device the battery meter decreases (for example, if i reboot a device with 65% life i notice after reboot it can go as low as 50%). Wondering why that is?

[Q] guys this is killing me

Battery life is a big issue in smartphones, not necessarily any specific model.
Things to keep in mind, most of these phones have a temp sensor. If your battery
is hot, it will shut off the charger, full or not. Battery monitor widget will tell you
the temp of the battery, and I don't believe it requires root. My battery generally
stays in the mid 20's to low 30's, temp-wise. Also, the more radios you have
turned on the faster your battery will drain. WiFi, 3G, 4G, GPS, BT, they all drain
the battery, and if you have them all turned on at the same time, your battery
will go even quicker, and data roaming, or even partner-roaming can help drain
the battery. Some phones (notably some HTC models, not sure if any others have
this issue), will keep scanning for 4G, even after you turn 4G off. this bug has
been documented, not sure what the workaround is other than to shut 4G off and
reboot, if your phone is affected by the bug.
There are a lot of other useful tricks for improving battery life, including rooting and
installing a custom rom and kernel, underclocking the CPU (on rooted phones),
etc., the list goes on and on. There are also as many forums on XDA dealing with
this subject, including forums specific to your phone..can't remember the links
offhand, but the search button should point you in the right direction. Don't be
afraid to check forums related to other models as well, as a lot of the tricks are
universal between android devices.
Also, as mentioned, you could have a bad battery. Lithium cells don't like getting
too hot, and definitely don't like being exposed to excess moisture. If you read up
on some of the threads related to bad battery life, and the suggestions included
don't help, check into getting your battery replaced.
Hope this was at least helpful in some way.
you should root your phone and download setcpu to underclock your phone.Another thing that might be eating your battery is syncing and screen brightness
So thanks guys for the replies!!!! they were in every bit helpful but my ordinal question was what does the cache partition do and will it help to go in recovery node and delete it or doesn't it mater if your not rooted
bump?.......

Terrible battery drain with any ROM with different batteries

Hello,
I know such tread were posted several time before and i read all of them but i did not find any solutions to my problem. My battery drain is really bad with stock battery, Anker battery, Mugen and others.
Battery darins like 1% per minute or 5 minutes even if Data,Wifi,Sync are off and i the phone not used at all.
So far i have tried the following:
1) Installing different ROMs (I even tried installing the ROMs and not adding any new applications and not modifying any settings to see if it is a problem with an app i have or ROM). So i flash a ROM and leave it as it is, without isntalling anything, but battery drain is still very bad
2) I have tried calibrating (charging 100% and wiping stats) several times
3) I have tried different batteries including Mugen and Anker.
4) I tried those all together several times..
5) I have tried better Battery stats and battery widget to check whats wrong but did not find anything unusual.
6) i have tired to charge my battery longer than ususal (to make sure it is 100%)
battery Usage says 89% of battery is used by Android OS
I suspect this might be a hardware problem but how can i check this? and is it possible to fix? Maybe i should go to recovery and check how long does it take for the battery to go from 100% to say 5% ? but i need some figures to compare with.
so my questions are:
A) Did anyone have similar problems? if yes were you able to fix ?
B) How can i check if there is a hardware problem with my battery connection or something else that might cause battery drain
C) Can anyone let me know how long does it take for the battery to go from 100% to 5% (or 10% or 20%) if the phone is all the time in recovery mode?
D) Can the charger be the problem? I am using stadard Sensation charger..
Any help and advice will be highly appreciated
Thank you
I don't know how long it takes for the battery to go from 100 to 5% in recovery but I've forgotten my phone at home and not plugged in the charger and it has lasted all day.
Do you just test right after the installation of a rom? My battery usually drains fast after I flash a new rom but I'll let it go from full to dead then charge it overnight and the battery will last way longer after that charge.

do you use Titanium Backup? if so, find the app called "Google Backup Transport" and back it up real quick. then delete it, reboot into recovery and wipe dalvik + cache. then reboot the phone to see if that helps.(wait 2-3 days) back on the MT4G there was an issue where that app caused the Android OS to use a lot of the battery, might work here too in your case.
Hello,
I am still having the problem with my battery drain. I have tried finding Google Backup in Titanium Backup but it was not listed.
However, checking the battery use Android OS takes more that 85%...
I have installed another ROM.
Android OS now disappeared compltely. and it is Cell Standby that is eating all the juice now... But the battery drain is the same. I think the battary Usage indicator does not give any usefull information on what is using the battery..
But the bettery is getting quite warm... and continues to discharge. I just charged to 100% and went asleep. When I woke up next day after 8 hours I onli had 20% of battery remained... WiFi, Data, GPS were switched off.

what rom do you have installed now? if your problems keeps happening after switching roms, theres probably 1 of 2 problems. Bad battery (Im canceling this out because you said youve used multiple batteries) or a rogue app that is running in the background, killing your battery
also, have you tried formatting your SD card? save all the important stuff and try formatting it, then transfer all the data you saved back to the card
You should try changing your charger. Once I bought a new charger from ebay and I had a lot of probs, the phone took forever to charge, it got hot when charging, the battery would hold less charge.
I suggest you try deleting system, cache, userdata, boot with fastboot commander. Here The instructions to use it:
-download tool
-unpack zip and click on .exe application (is a stand alone app, so you have to click and confirm installation, that's all!)
-open tool
-put DHD in "Fastboot Mode"
-plug it to your pc usb
-Wait for "print of device succesfull"--(if fails, check your sdk driver)
-here you go to "misc"
-select: erase partitions (system, cache, userdata, boot) Don't select recovery
-click on "Erase chosen partition"--
-Done
-manually reboot dhd to recovery
-don't care about error message like E:/can't found recovery log" or something like this.
(It's just recovery wich telling you that partitions are not mounted!)
-So wipe data factory reset to re-mount partitions, otherwise you can't flash anything!
-now flash your rom
this way you are sure that your phone is completely wiped! And when I said completely I mean COMPLETELY!! (except for recovery)
This tool is very useful to solves strange issues that a normal wipe cannot solve! Sometimes happen
Last but not least you could try updating your recovery to the latest version.
Hope you solve your problems:good:
Hello,
1) Yes i tried 3-4 different batteries. Is it possible they all are damaged? By say damaged charger?
2) As for charger, will USB charger work fine (connected to PC) ? Currently I am using the wall charger, but i do not have a sapre one to try.
3) I will try to wipe everything using the tool provided. Thank you.....
I think I already have latest recovery.
P.S currently I am swothching between MIUI roms, but i had ARHD and other roms before that with smae problem...
Do you spend a lot of time in an area with bad cell reception? If so it will spend a lot of battery constantly trying to ping a cell tower.

If you want you can try using my combination of rom/kernel, you can find them in my signature, I myself had battery problems, but with my Anker and this configuration I get 24 hours of medium usage. Yes the USB charger will do the job and just check if your wall charger has the right output voltage (5v).
Another thing you could do is download this app from Playstore Battery Monitor Widget. It shows the current mA drain/charge.If you see that battery drain is strangely high (example 200mA in standby than your problem isn't the battery/charger. I get a drainage of 3-10mA in standby, which is pretty good. Good luck finding the couprit:good:
Thank you all for your advice!
1) as for ROM i do not think any other ROM/Kernel is going to make a difference. I tried to many of them by now. And I do not think ANY rom is so bad to drain 10-15% per hour while phone is not in use
2) i tried different SD cards and tried pulling out the SD completely, so it should not be the case...
3) I am in good reception area. In fact the phone used to work just fine in the same area when i just bought it... but then something went wrong (cannot find what)
4) If it is an application - than should be something inbuilt in the ROM. because I have tried installin ROM and keeping it clean without installing anything at all. not even changing settings... but the problem was still there...
and 5) I am using Battery Monitor Widget and it is between -35mA and -75mA.
Seems too much but I still cannot find the cause..
IT seems that i also have this issue!!!
using 2 sense 4 roms and my battery usage never ever come down to -40mA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i can not find culprit yet...
really annoying
I have learned a lot about my device since i bought it. The only thing I cannot figure out is the details about the Radio, and which one is the best for me. Can it be that the problems with battery are caused by radio?
What are three best radios to use with JB MIUI Member's choice and othe MIUI Roms?
Thanks
It seems like it was Radio after all.
I have checked my version and it was displayed as N/A instead of 11.68
so i reinstalled the radio and it seems like the problem is solved. at least today i have no problems. I will see if it will be fine tommorow and thereafter..

hmm thats weird? has your data connection gotten any better after changing radios, or is it still the same? good to hear you fixed the battery drain
Hello,
not the connection 3g, data. wi-fi works just as it used to work - just fine. The only thing that changed is that the battery does not die within few hours.
in standby - i have now easily more than 24 hours....
It seems liek the problem is back again. I did not isntall anything new or changed any settings. but suddenly i woke up with 40% of battery on my phone istead of 100%..
it really start to irritate me. There is nothin i mgiht have done to cause this. But the phone is noticabely warmer when it eats the battery for no reason....
Android OS is responsible for 83% of battery drain. While battery life was OK it only had 2-3%...
PS
Today i lost 60% of battery (from 100% to 40%) while sleeping and my phone not used.

Try installing CPU Spy from Play Store and see if the phone is in deep sleep while not being used. Although this tool doesn't give a lot of information, but at least the 1st thing we can see from this tool is whether the CPU is put into deep sleep while the phone is sleeping. Losing 60% while sleeping is very likely that the CPU didn't go into deep sleep state. So this tool should give you some indication. If the CPU ever goes into deep sleep, you'll see the Deep Sleep entry below 192Mhz.

My one s is not like it used to be

for a few weeks, my one s battery cant pass through 2-2.5 hours of screen time although it used to be something like 4 hours.
i tried to full reset, didnt help.
even noticed that games are lagging, like music hero and subway surfers to the point it can fail me.
most of the time the screen brighness set on 30%, wifi mostly off, gps off, sync off. only 3g is on.
i got s4 version running 2.21 software stock locked unrotted nothing.
as it is from the manufacture.
i dont use alot of apps, mostly basic ones like whatsapp chrome shazam and few more.
i dont think its some bad app which draning my batt, also the phone is 2 month old.
all this time, the phone didnt do any problems but 2 days ago for the first time after unlock the screen phone had restart.
could it be that after 2 months my battery is dying?
If you say that games are lagging there could be something draining your cpu... This could also explain the battery drain.
In the battery stats, what app/task is draining most?
Well, screen by far... No special app drains..

BetterBatteryStats and Carat. Take a BBS dump after a day's use and you should see what's causing major issues. Carat will take care of anything else after a few weeks by showing you what apps are using serious battery power.
it is unlikely that she dies. What radio are you using?

Why dont you install a Custom ROM for testing if this problem still shows up ? Like someone mentioned above something is fu*** up your CPU for some reason and this is the reason why your battery is going down very fast.
Some questions:
- Do you run any "battery saver" or any other app in the background (except Facebook,WhatsApp,GMail,..)
- Do you charge your battery from totally 0% (when your phone doesnt boot anymore) to full 100% ? It could be a battery de-calibration but this not really explains your lagging problems
i dont want a custom rom because i still want my warranty.
i dont run any battery saver app in background.
i charged the phone from 0 to 100 few weeks ago.
for 2 days im trying to be on gsm only and its seems battery have been improved by almost an hour.
there are less lags in games also and the device is feeling faster.
could be a radio problem?
i have full reception most of the time.
maybe the diztronic skin interrupting radio or something?
in few days carat will give me a report and ill see what he suggest.

I understand your argument but if you follow the guides step by step you will succeed. Even if you fail, you still have multiple ways to recover your phone. My broadband chip was broken and i lost my IMEI (Galaxy S1) and i had a custom ROM installed and the support still repaired it.
Maybe you need to calibrate your battery. If you only charged it once it doenst really helps.
Dont know, maybe it could be a radio problem.
You have a skin installed? If you rooted your device the warranty still could be gone.
i dont want to root the device cuz of warrenty.
i have diztronic case from amazon.
and i heared recharging the battery from 0-100 could harm your battery for long term and shorten the battery life.

No. I don't know where you got that from but It's crap. It doesn't harm your battery, in fact it is better than charging from 60%.
GSM only does NOT affect gameplay. Maybe battery, but not gameplay. Somehow I think you're trolling everyone.

im not trolling, i love this phone and really wondered maybe i did something wrong with it..
gsm only shouldnt affect games but maybe its affecting something else which affect games.
maybe its a software issue or drivers.
Guys, stop being idiotic. "Battery calibration" might as well be telling the person to charge the phone while hopping on one foot and rubbing his other.
It's quite simple. Post screenshots of the top of the list for partial wakelock, process, and kernel wakelock. This will help diagnose battery drain problems. Carat will slowly build a list of battery drainers that you can also use to identify issues.
And please make sure you're not using any task killers or similar apps as they cause more harm than good and are big no-no's on Android.
Speaking of Custom ROMs, I'm not sure what the rules are where you live, but where I live, unlocking the bootloader does not void the warranty, so flashing custom ROMs is perfectly safe, just make sure to make a backup first.
And yes, battery calibration is not possible, as these batteries doesn't have any "memory".
Where i live the warranty void sadly.
Im still waiting for carat report but for this moment, using gsm only + wifi instead of auto wcdma/gsm, seems to make my battery life normal - almost 4 hours screen time.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100 heating up

Ello Folks,
I'm new to this forum and for some stupid reason I can't post within the forum I wanted to, so I hope someone can help me here..
I have been playing with Custom Roms for a long time and I have ALWAYS encountered problems regarding battery drain. I have searched innumerous times for ways to fix it.. I've tried many different ROMS and KERNELS and I always ended up with a massive battery consumption with little use. I then thought it was my battery as the device is quite old so I decided to buy a new original battery and still having the same problem.
I am starting to think that I am really dumb and doing something wrong or maybe I am just unlucky. I got my phone back in 2011 from T-Mobile UK and I am now running JB 4.2.2 Revolt JB I9100 and Dorimanx V9.33 as kernel.
My battery is going from 100% to 0% in like 4 hours. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

Batter drain in 4 hours is not normal. But with heavy usage of 3g/4g it can be. As you said you got heating problems too.
So, first with the battery. Install betterbatterystats from play store. Let the battery drain off completely and charge it to 100 in a go keeping data network/Bluetooth/GPS/WiFi in off mode. Check how much time it's taking to charge it from 0% to 100%. Now discharge it off to 0% and Check the rate of discharge. If it's below 5%/Hour you are safe.
But if it is as you said before 4hours battery backup, there must be some trouble.
These kinds of drastic battery drain happens of many reasons.
1. Poor signal strength.
2. Overloading cpu ( which also cause overheating)
3. Any background running apps which utilizing a bunch a data.
4. Bad kernel (we can pick this out as you tried different kernels.)
5. Defective battery.
Or a last chance
6. A hardware failure.
So inorder to find the root cause behind this problem check each of the possibilities one at a time.
In case of cpu, change the governor and I/o scheduler and see.
In case of background running apps, check whichever programs revising maximum amount of battery.
Hope it helps..

Cheers mate,
I am well aware that custom kernels allow me to overclock it and change governors and i/o and that these kinda settings have a major role on how much battery the device will consume. But as I have never really understood the diferences btw them I for once have never played with the values so I have always left 'em at their default value.
The only real reason I've decided to change to a Custom Rom is to get new versions of the Android OS and to get rid of the hideous TouchWiz skin from Samsung..
I am not living in the UK at the moment as got transfered to Brazil for work and I have been on TIM network and they suck badly so maybe cuz their 3G sucks its whats causing my battery to drain like crazy.
But I will definitely follow your instructions and hopefully I'll get a positive result..
Once again, thank you very much.
