[Q] Cannot talk and Surf after installing ICS leak - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

After Installing the ICS leak, i noticed that i cannot use the internet (Talk and Surf) while on a Call. Has anyone else noticed this?
Also, when i make a call, it always switches from 4G Lte to regular HSPA 4G.

are u with AT&T? They throttle data during calls.

Really? I never knew they throttled data during phone calls. I guess i just noticed it after installing leak ICS.
Its almost as if it there is no data. Wow that is crazy. Thanks.
I wonder if anyone else has noticed throttling.

LTE is used only for data, voice can`t go thru LTE. That is why phones switch to 4G when making phone calls. Later this year VoLTE will be available on Verizon and 2013 for AT&T.

First of all, add a real title to this thread if you want responses. Second, are you sure you're even in an HSPA area?

Yes im sure I am in a hspa area. Im also in an hspa+ area. All my other phones fluctuate between untenable and hspa when on a data load. My ns doesn't.
Sorry about the title.

the H is purely symbolic. if the phone says 3G you should still be getting the same data speeds. use the speedtest app and check your data speeds. if they are unusually slow, then something is wrong.

Ya not going to lie. That definitely happened to me. It was just after I had to go into Tmo to get my wife's plan checked out because she wasn't getting data and I'd never changed the setting so I had no cause to believe it was changed <.< brought it into Tmo to see if they had somehow screwed up and throttled me...nope I was just an idiot lol

[Q] Reception Problems

okay guys so I just switched over from the Galaxy S to the S2, Skyrocket LTE
I had full reception at my house with the Captivate....Now, with the skyrocket I still have full reception....but with a catch
I'll have full service...then all of the sudden it will drop to 1 bar and be unable to send any texts. (Message not sent error). Then, like 45 seconds later it will turn back up to 5 bars and ill get texts.
the time that its off and on seems to be consistently repeating and switching back and forth between 45 second intervals. Also, sometimes ill get all my texts together (9 unread) out of nowhere with time stamps from 5-12 minutes ago.
I'm running STOCK everything:
Android version 2.3.5
Baseband: I727UCKJ2
Kernel version: 2.6.35.11
I wanna root my phone but I wanna make suree there isnt a problem with it.
I think its also important to note that this problem is ONLY in my house and around my house. not anywhere else.
Any ideas on what could be causing this, or any solutions? anyone else have the same problem?
I'd recommend reporting your thread via the upper right link to have this moved, you got it posted in the wrong phone section. I'd try to take a stab at helping ya but honestly it would just be a guess...
Thread moved from AT&T Galaxy S II forums to the Skyrocket Q&A forum...
anyone have any idea?

There have been some problems reported on the LTE network, but the biggest problem was/is.. people not being able to make calls when the network mode was set to lte auto. Depending on where you are, you might want to check the coverage map for your location... and call your carrier.

Thank you, do you have any links regarding the problems reported? I'm in LA, I dont think we have LTE here yet. Also the problems seem to happen only at my house, not even like 1 block down. I know I had full coverage here with no problems on my Captivate. It's just this phone, reception drops to 1 bar, then 5 .... like every 10 seconds, keeps going up and down, I gotta time when to send my texts so they go through lol.
I want to say lte is in testing for la. That could definitely cause issues if they are messing with the towers. The same thing happened to me while we were in Vegas...a few days later everything worked ...including LTE which Vegas previously did not have. Its also worth checking to make sure ATT has u on an LTE plan. Its been documented that if they have not done that it can cause some issues

the captivate is not a 4g or Lte phone...the phone is not trying to switch between 3g to 4g...i think thats the problem with your SII..trying to change from H+ to Lte without succes in an area doesnt have Lte
The only links that I have seen, are for rogers here in Canada.. don't know if that would be of any help to you? While my signal strength is all over the map, I have never had any problems making or receiving calls.

I went ahead and called. It seems the problem is, as everyone suspected, the phone trying to switch from H+ to LTE. the 4G logo seems to change from 4G to 4G (LTE) when it drops reception. Will rooting / roming help stop this? Are there any ways of turning off LTE until they get it fully working?
With regards to the quote above, I currently have Unlimited Data since i got grandfathered in. The guy at the ATT store told me I dont have to change my data plan and I'll keep my unlimited (so i did that). He gave me a new sim which he said "will help give you better reception". Will I still have issues because i dont have the new data plans? I want to keep my unlimited data.
**EDIT**
Just checked on ATTs website and I have "LTE UNL SMT VVMT" data plan.
Thanks in advance for all the feedback guys!
Also, I think its important to note that even if I connect to WiFi, the problem is still there, reception drops and goes up consistently. I've missed countless phone calls and have had to resend a vast amount of texts. I get all my texts together every 4-6 minutes. PLEASE help =/
Did you ever get this resolved. I have the same problem at my house, calls drop frequently and data seems to be not available at times.
Y did u resurrect this thread lol, a new post might have been better. None the less, try the telus KJ3 radio if u don't have LTE in your area, it has really good voice quality, and consistent data rates. If u do have LTE use the new UCLA3 one

Known att issue, they throttle your speeds when on a phone call. Test it out on hspa+.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I777 using Tapatalk
I'm not sure its even going down to Hspa+ because its just way to slow, nothing loads. I tried speedtest.net and was getting like edge speeds probably even worse.
I remember talking on the phone once and checking the data network type in about phone and it said UMTS (first 3G tech, about 365kbps max). i guess AT&T uses HSPA for voice and UMTS for data while on a call? idk.

Yea you are right, I just checked in About Phone and it goes back and forth between HSDPA and UTMS. That sucks. Would love to browse while talking on the phone. Pages are loading way too slow.
AT&T throttles your phone and also bring it down to UMTS to save battery while in call, if you haven't noticed, it sucks tremendous amounts of battery to talk on the phone and keeping the phone at it's max speeds will just eat the battery dry!

It was found some time ago that AT&T startled throttling speeds during calls.
http://thesmartphonechamp.com/att-secretly-throttling-their-smartphone-customers-video/
That would explain why recently I was on a call and I tried to look up something and nothing was coming up on my browser. That's BS. Remember all those old AT&T ads claiming, "Only on OUR network can you talk and browse the web on your iPhone?" I'm tired of being nickle and dimed by these damn guys..

Well it is true, only on AT&T can you talk and browse at the same time on an iPhone. They aren't saying you can browse very well, just that you can. I came from a 9700 Blackberry so UMTS was my day to day and I know the headache.

Galaxy S4 missing calls, not receiving calls - Compromised solution

Symptom: I just upgrade from iphone 4s to Galaxy S4, after about a month use, I missed 4 calls from my friends. The phone did not ring at all, and there was no missed call in the log. This is a very serious problem. someone say she almost broke up with her bf just because of this,
Solution:For now I found the solution is to turn off the LTE by go to setting=>Connections=>More networks=>Mobile networks=>Network mode and then choose "GSM/WCDMA". Then you will not miss a call.
Compromise: your data speed is reduced to 4G HSAP+. But if you have 200MB plan and only receive emails like me it does not matter(poor solution for people who has unlimited or 2gb+ data plan), plus by using 4G HSAP+ instead of 4G LTE you get better battary life.
Explaination: I lives in Pullman WA where we have LTE here. Some of my friends using a LTE capable phone (iphone 5, other GS4, nokia 920) also met this problem sometimes (this happens totally random or say I cannot conclude a situation when this will happen). The general idea is that LTE can only handle data transfer but not voicecalls (you can make a call with the LTE on and you will see that your phone swith from LTE to 4G), so if you are using the LTE network and your phone is connected to wifi (at this time your phone is using wifi data not LTE and then you are not connected to the tower at all, this is my guess, I am ME engineer not a communication engineer) and it's on sleep mode (these situations are my assumption) you may miss the phone call. But when you wake up your phone and ask your friends to make test call. you will receive the call.
If you read this post, many people with GS3 has this problem before:
forums.att.com/t5/Android-Discussion-and-Support/Samsung-Galaxy-S3-Not-Receiving-Calls-Phone-issue-or-Android/td-p/3270741
and with iphone 5:
forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1489651
and their solution is to turn off the LTE through a complicated process(we have such function build in the phone, :laugh,
I put this here to help people who has the same problem, but I also wish ATT can fix this problem ASAP because we are paying for LTE speed. So if you have the same problem with your LTE phone please leave a post here and this could arrise the attention.

Yes, they give me a new sim and my old sim stop working after they activate the new sim. But I put that new sim into the iphone 4s first before I put it into the GS4, Will this cause the problem? Do I need to ask them to issue me a new sim?
Thanks for the reply
Probably not. If you got a new LTE sim then that should not be the problem.

Ummmm but yeah dumbass we're not talking about a whole network outage.
Everyone would be dropping calls/texts in your scenario but that's not what this is about.
My wife's phone misses calls/texts randomly while moving and connecting to different towers over a 140 mile radius, she has a GS4. Now here's the part that makes your statement dumb. While this is going on, I receive calls/texts perfectly fine on a GS5 sitting right next to her the whole time.
It's a device issue, not a network issue. Something so simple normal monkeys can figure out.

From what I have read here I wanted to turn it off as a troubleshooting step and see if it would fix my not ringing problem.

3G Issues

First of all, my LTE works fine, this is only an issue with the 3G radios. Basically, I often have issues with 3G actually sending and receiving data. When it does, it is slower than 1X for me. It drains the battery at crazy rates such as 20%/hr with little to no use. This has happened regardless of rom, although now I am on the stock f1 update and unrooted. I bought this phone used so there's no hope of a CLNR. I've had it "fixed" by samsung twice and nothing has changed. Any ideas? I have an upgrade but I'm waiting for the One or the 5S and REALLY don't want to use it on a phone I wouldn't be happy with.
Same exact problem here. 4G works fine. 3G is essentially useless. Often when it changes to 3G, I wish it would just go to 1X so that at least it would be functional. I've never really found a solution. The other day my phone was in 3G and I tried to send a text msg with a picture. It took almost ten minutes. Completely useless.
Friends with 3G Verizon phones never have any problems. They always get a solid 3G connection. I used to be with Sprint (useless) and set my Evo to roam on Verizon because the 3G was so much more responsive and quick than Sprint. Not seeing that with my S3.

Yeah none of my friends have issues either. My friend with her iPhone 5 was using it next to me and it loaded pages in just a few seconds, still slower than 3G, but mine took almost a minute.

Forgot to mention... My wife's also got an S3. Mine's rooted with CleanROM and LK1 modem. Her's has the latest update. She has the same issues with 3G. She also had them on MB1.
Fortunately my phone doesn't flip over to 3G often. But when it does, I just stick it back in my pocket, because it won't do anything useful until it switches back to 4G.
I've never found the answer to this problem, but I'd really like to. I understand that this is a 4G phone, but it should be able to fall back to 3G with no problems.

Theoretically AOSP ROMs should have absolutely no effect on data or voice since they don;t touch the radio firmware.
I was in a 3G zone this evening and did a speedtest.
23 kbps down. It died when trying to run the upload portion of the test. Friends with regular 3G phones routinely get 800 kbps - 1200 kbbs down.
I agree. It has to be the phone. And given that it seems to happen across multiple radios and only to some people, it's probably hardware related. Doesn't matter when I get 4G. Sucks when I can't.
I'm going to be at camp for a week soon and I only get 3G there so I'm strongly considering buying a used 4S until a new phone comes.
I have 3g signal in the house.. wide open all bars with a network extender..I go outside to get 4g, then it will send pic messages. dumbphone

I don;t think its a Samsung problem, more like a Verizon wide issue. If you look in the verizon user forums, all the Iphone and HTC and Moto folks complain about the same things.
https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/784496
I don't think so. Not only are they not complaining about just 3G, my friends' phones work fine.
Not only that, but my GNex I had before this somehow consistently had 2 mbps dl speeds on 3g.
Friends on Verizon with 3g only phones get excellent speeds where I am at. Verizon 3g is not the problem around here. On 3g phones, it is fast and responsive. When switching from Sprint, I went with Verizon based on the quality of its 3g.

Too bad you have to rely on something else that you pay for independently for your phone to be able to do its job. These phones should work on 3G. I have to imagine that there are some who don't have 4G that have to rely on 3G. Maybe they just don't get this phone, or get it and return it?
