So, i've been using Handcent for a while now, and it has it's quirks, especially when you want to create custom tones for each sender.
An then i tried Pansi SMS, pretty new in the market, does what any other 3rd party sms app does, slightly easier when doing custom sms tones.
GOSMS is a no-go
ChompSMS, never tried it
Anyone has an opinion on which client they're using that does not lag when scrolling the conversations list? With the exception of stock app, that is.
The search for the perfect SMS app continues............
Why is GoSMS a no-go? I have 15000 messages on my phone in over 300 threads and there is not even the slightest lag on scrolling in the conversation list. Granted it is a not a "light" app but there isnt a performance issue and its very much bug-free.
In fact its the only sms client I have found that can support so many messages and not slow to absolute crawl just trying to start up.
i use go sms and i have about 6000 sms stored and no lag at all
i dont need custom ring tones or any of that other crap mind
i've never thought about using an other sms-client. what's wrong about the stock one? it scrolls also very smooth and is clean...
There's a few problems with the stock sms client compared to 3rd party ones. I use gosms because:
a) as mentioned above the stock app really doesnt handle a large number of texts well. It fails to start most of the time and can become very laggy when dealing with a large number of texts.
b) gosms supports emoji emoticons that are cross-compatible with iphone emoji emoticons.
c) ability to send to as many contacts in one go as you want without resorting to a modded stock app.
d) theme customisation.
e) able to have a custom ringtone and vibrate pattern for sms. I find this useful as I have my phone on silent most of the time and like the fact I can set gosms to do 4 short buzzes when I receive a text so I can differentiate between normal notifications (like facebook, email) and sms whilst it is in my pocket.
As I said I think my biggest issue with gosms is that it has too many features. I really dont want a chat client built in to my sms app, or the ability to lock it, have folders, see a list of all my contacts, message filter etc etc.
go sms was a no-go for me due to lag when i tried it about 4 months ago i think
maybe newer versions have improved
can you share what dpi you're on? i'm running at 240.
Currently on 320dpi because I'm back to using TouchWiz as I find the other launchers are still a little laggy compared to it.
I was using GoLauncher and GoSMS at 280dpi just a few weeks ago though and it seemed fine then. Im on LC1 stock deodexed. I advise you to be on one of the newer Samsung firmwares if you are not already. There was a huge performance jump between the K** based firmwares and the newer L** based firmwares.
i am on Chrack's LC1. May give GoSMS another...go.

Yes, I have 100+ SMS's on my G1.
I also have a lot of thing that counts 100+.
BUT:
While scrolling files, pics, contacts - perfect, 99% smooth.
Scrolling SMS - is very laggy via standard application, though in ChompSMS.
Does someone have bug like this??
Is this removable\editable somehow, JF?
Thanks!
simple solution install SMS Backup from the Market and backup all your sms then delete the threads ........................... common sense should tell you that the problem is that you have too much SMS to load which is why it lags
I gotta agree with deleting the threads. I had something like 950+ txt messages from my woman and sometimes chomp and even worse the default messenger would just choke at loading all the messages. I installed smsbackup and send those messages to my gmail account and deleting the threads makes it a lot faster now.
In my opinion, this problem of too many sms' would be solved by there being a delete messages after they are x amount of days setting. I don't know why this isn't stock.
I had this problem, but RC33 fixed it for me.
I totally agree!! Just checked -
THE RC33 ABSOLUTELY CORRECT THE SMS's X-AMOUNT CHOPINESS!
I <з Google.
Even more now)
Solved.
Update: ChompSMS still laggy scrolls, though the default app works and scrolls perfectly!
My RC33 is still really laggy. If you want to have 100% smooth scrolling text with tons of messages, use K9 SMS. It's phenomenal.

Handcent SMS is a FREE enhanced SMS & MMS application for Android. It fully unleashes the power for your Andorid phone on messaging, including: Full Support SMS,MMS including attach picture, movie, audio; Great customizability, you can define many options on settings window; Power SMS POP UP Window including SMS Template(Quick Text),Recognize Speech and Speak SMS; Group Send SMS & MMS, easy people & group select; Sync with your phone contact database; Different conversation bubble style (iphone, handcent ,android); Define different ringtone, vibrate,LED,background, signature ,bubble style for different people; Support additional font pack ,can display sms message with many beautiful & stylish font; Include 10 and more countries language pack and will continue support more language; Many useful functions including Blacklist ,Search SMS & MMS ,Batch Mode for threads & Messages; Support Handcent keyboard (A T9 predict Text keyboard). Full support MMS on Droid and add “Split 160″ function,
Do you use it on your android? What do you think of it?
I use it on my Evo. I like it A LOT better than the standard messenger because it lets you customize EVERYTHING about how you send, receive, view, and get notified by messages. I find it just as quick as the standard android messenger and (obviously) more visually appealing. My ONLY gripe about it is that it seems to have problems with MMS messeges sometimes (If it does, I just send the messages via the standard messenger)
Definitely one of my favorite/most useful apps
I've used it on my Droid from the day I got it, but since I got Froyo its been horrible. It force closes every few hours, and lately its been showing me the incorrect contacts on my threads.
Loved it, but not using it anymore.
It's good. It's not great because its support forums are just awful; hardly any reports have been replied to by a moderator/developer in the past month or so, and most have yet to be fixed (going back many months ago).
It is wayyy faster than the HTC messaging app in every aspect: opening the app, loading a conversation, sending a message, showing contact images, etc.
Are you gonna do something with these issues, davidandroid?
I love this app

I just read a review about this app from downloadandroid blog by Tina, I post here cuase i like it, I am not a developer for this app although i am a developer for andoid. You can take a look at my apps, Blink, BrainwaveTuner, MemoryBooster and so on. I am very glad if you like one of them.
Which one is better for u guys?
Right now I have handcent but want to kno what others think bout GO SMS.
Thank you in advance.

i use Go SMS. i have used handcent as well, except there are some annoyances i have with it. handcent seems to lag my phone more and isn't as smooth. also, when you have the pop up option on in handcent, the pop up comes up and there's a stretched background that you can't seem to change, maybe thats just me. its always that venice street looking default background. honestly try both, i reverted back to go sms. actually go sms runs in apps with only 44.0KB compared to handcent's 2.09 on mine
Go is much smoother on my phone also. Definately my fav.
Go sms it is.
Sent from my G2
Go SMS. Much smaller and smoother than Handcent.
I am trying GO SMS for the first time, I am a long time handcent user (since I bought my moment and hated its SMS app a few years back).
Anyway, just installed. First impression is it is quick. Feels lots faster than handcent on my epic (midnight 2.9 rom + ext4).
Only issue I have is, it doesn't show all the contact pictures. They come from facebook linking. Handcent displayed them with no issues. Guess it isn't a deal breaker. Just would be nice, now that I have become used to them being there.
B+
Been using the GO SMS n it just feels cleaner to me.

GO SMS!
IT's much faster on my HDH & I much prefer the GUI.
Try them both and see for yourself.
I vote GO though!
Go sms is faster than Hancent ..

What app do you use to see how many KBs it uses while running?
Has anyone had issues with not receiving MMS from others using GO SMS? My cousin uses GO but when he sends me pics/videos/music, I never get it. When he sends via Handcent they go through just fine.

I get the sme problem with mms.
I get mms through stock msg fine.
Sent from my G2
Handcent sms
After testing both, definately using Gosms
GO SMS for me too
i've recently had a bug with gosms but i do like it better
I've been a Handcent user for a long time, but it has been a lot of delay to open D:
Now i'm using and it is very smooth and light. Unfortunately, it doesn't show my contacts pictures and in Handcent show up, no issues.
Someone has this issue or it is really a Go SMS problem?
Thanks!
Handscent. Like the ability to change themes, full customization.
my GoSMS shows the contact pictures from my google contacts just fine. add a pic to contact using gmail contacts on a computer. then allow the phone to sync. send that person a txt to see if it shows the picture. i also have sim contacts disabled, and no facebook stuff going on. hope that helps
handcent is like bloatware. I went with 1 year for it before I found Go. WAY BETTER. GoSMS all the way.
used handcent for a while, now i m playing with gosms... smoother, some fine animation and a lot more reliable through some advanced settings so GOSMS, does the trick
Go SMS for me. I tried handscent and was annoyed by the ads when you have an internet connection. Another is Go SMS's interface is much cleaner than handscent.
I never really liked GoSms with its messy design but now that there are privacy complaints I wouldn't even touch it. That being said, I've been using stock messaging app because it was simple;however, I'm looking for a new messaging app that uses less ram than the stock one. I know, you shouldn't worry about ram on an android- but I'm just used to worrying about it so what is a good alternative to Gosms?
*I don't like handcent either, it's messy as well.
I don't tried, but I found Pansi SMS, Handcent SMS and chompSMS. The former says is the "Fastest SMS application ever on Android". It can be lightweight.
I am some times involved in group messages with my friends(all iphone users).
I like the stock messaging app, and I have hated all 3rd party apps that i have tried(gosms and handcent).
My question is: Is there anyway I can retain the stock messaging app as default, but am still able to use another third party app to view and reply to these group mms? With my limited experience so far, handcent and gosms both require their apps to be the default app to work. I would rather much avoid this.
or can someone suggest me another app that will allow me to read and reply to my friends group messaging as seamlessly as they can?

You should be able to use other messaging apps, and still keep the stock as your default. Same with the browser, there is a stock browser, but you can use another one as a default (i use chrome). depending on the rom, there may be a setting for app association.

well, thats why im askin a question. gosms and handcent both require themselves to be set as default apps to even enable group messaging to work. both of those apps are crappy enough that i dont want them set as default.
and there doesnt seem to be a way that those apps can thread my messages together AFTER i have received em. they have to be set to default before receiving group mms
You can try groupme, its an app strictly for group messaging and you don't have to use it as a stock messenger.
I just looked at the way GroupMe does things.... blech. it's amazing to me that NO one has implemented a good third-party solution to the group messaging thing. Apple is so often behind the times on new features, but they implemented group SMS YEARS ago at this point.
As for a stock SMS replacement, I like ChompSMS. I agree that Handcent and GoSMS are both... not good. Chomp is a clean interface. still doesn't do group SMS though, so if you like the stock Messaging app for normal SMS then I guess stick with it.

yea i hate apple, but their emojis and group messaging are the only things i like.
i have emojies, but theyre no where near as clean and easy to use as the iphone. and somebody will make lots of money if they can finally come up with something that will seamlessly integrate android to ios group messaging.
Maybe think of switching to AOSP? Group messaging is default

i love this rom so much. and im so used to sense. i really dont know how i feel about swapping over to aosp for such a "simple" feature. im just hoping for a good alternative
