It's complicated! - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi fellow Xoom owners.
I'm having this issue with my 3G Xoom that I can't just get past.
As soon as FedEx handed me my internet-ordered tablet, I started looking into rooting methods and all.
Strangely, even though I live in Saudi Arabia, I received it with the US firmware, kernel or whatever it's actually called (MZ600 - XOOM WITH WI-FI + VERIZON 3G Build HRI66) which I didn't know at the time it was Verizon's but was wondering why 3G didn't work.
Anyway, I followed a rooting tutorial without paying attention to the build which got my Xoom stuck into the Moto logo thing.
Following tutorials into how to restore it, I downloaded the right build for Saudi Arabia (MZ601 - XOOM WITH WI-FI + UMTS Build H.6.1-38-9 for Retail Other International) which worked like a charm and with 3G!
Since, at that point I was already out of warranty, I flashed a Tiamat ROM and worked great but without 3G (bummer!).
Going through ROM trials, I'm now on Team EOS Verizon 4G ICS ROM but, as you've already guessed, no 3G for me (duh!).
I noticed that Team EOS are also working on a MZ601 ROM which should have worked to my favor of regaining 3G back but is somwhy isn't.
Bottom line of the story, I want to regain my 3G back while staying on an ICS ROM, preferably Team EOS's .
It's way better than the Honeycomb it came with and I'm not ready to lose all my game save files again!
Please help me.

The Link you provided in you post (Team EOS Verizon 4G ICS ROM)- That Build is not for your Device, as you device is not MZ602 with 4G LTE. Seeing that you received a US MZ600 Xoom that is actually CDMA and not GSM, it is suprising that the MZ601 UMTS worked for you. But since you say that it worked:
Try this one Team EOS ICS, EU 3G Xoom (umts_everest / MZ601)

Google Applications (Required for all devices)
http://http://goo-inside.me/roms/teameos/gapps/EOS_GApps_ics_4.0.3_v10.5.zip
As Always, If This Was Helpful - Hit The Thanks Button!

I've already tried that ROM and for some reason it did't work.
Though on earlier versions, it used to give me a certain error which goes something like "phone.android.'something' stopped working" but now it doesn't.
As for the build I received it with, I haven'y the slightest idea how that happened!
I even took a picture of of my tablet before rooting in case anything went wrong... here.

Check this thread, you can try out Umts Everest - Euro & also Stingray 3G, as you are having CDMA xoom

Seems promising but gives me the "502 Bad Gateway" BS.
I'll try a bit later or will look for other sources.
EDIT: BTW, since I'm already on ICS, I don't need to factory reset, right?

yea there seems to be an issue with the download links.
its better to do a clean install, you can always backup your apps & data.

Since you brought it, how can I make a backup of my data?
By data I mean game saves 'cuz that's what I can't afford to lose {: s
I wanted to install CM9 on my Galaxy SII but stopped at the same data backup problem.
And, isn't there any tool to use on my PC to backup apps & data and manage my device ROMs... etc?

Titanium backup is one of the best apps to backup data and apps in my experience. You can find it on the play store. Also im not sure if you can buy the pro key for it but it makes reinstalling everything a breeze. Can you still connect to wifi?
Sent from my SPH-D710

@fredrick
RedXXII already gave the answer which i was gonna say. titanium backup is the best, you can backup & restore app + data easily. you just need a rooted device to use titanium backup.

So guys, let me get this straight:
You're saying that an MZ600 Xoom will work on a 900/1800 3g network just by flashing it with a european rom? I thought this was impossible

thread starter himself said that he flashed a 3G rom, which worked for him
I downloaded the right build for Saudi Arabia (MZ601 - XOOM WITH WI-FI + UMTS Build H.6.1-38-9 for Retail Other International) which worked like a charm and with 3G!

that's y its suggested to him to flash euro 3G rom

I have absolutely no idea how this happened.
I bought it from an Arabic online store for use in my country but received with a different ROM.
After restoring my tablet from the Moto logo error, I restored it to the official international firmware and it started working AND with Arabic support!
Maybe seller ordered the wrong software on the right hardware???

Agreed. The electronics involved in GSM and CDMA is definitely different. I think that is why his data never worked in the first place

OK.
I finally found working links for the codename android ROM v1.6.0 and tried the stingray 3G and the umts and none worked.
Any idea on what could be done at this point?
I re-checked the data bearers of both International and European firmwares and they are exactly the same.
Couldn't there be something like a missing driver or so that would make my Xoom recognize the carrier?
Or alternatively, isn't there a way to unlock it to any carrier supporting the same data bearers?

This is puzzling me for some time now. I have an MZ600 (Verizon 3G without the 4g upgrade) but I live in Europe. I know that MZ600 has Qualcomm MDM6600 which supports both cdma and umts. So I thought that using it in Europe would be as easy as switching Team Eos rom from "stingray_cdma / MZ600" to "umts_everest/MZ601" . I had the idea that this would change the baseband and I will manage to register on a 3g (european) network. Sadly, this isn't true and I'm still puzzled whether this is even possible or I haven't found the right way yet.
So to sum things up:
Is Qualcomm MDM6600 capable for both cdma & umts?
Is so, does anyone know someone that managed to get the MZ600 to register on a umts 3g network ?(you may see the signal of 3g but you cannot register)
If anyone can shed some light regarding this issue, it would be nice .

Check product specs for your original country and current place of use.
I believe they have totally different data bearers.
But, who am I to say?
I'm the one with a paradox over here!

so mr. Fredrick Sylar
what version of the xoom do you use...? the MZ600? or the MZ601?

well anyone ......?

have a look at this guys....

LATAM Baseband

I have seen many threads talking about basebands, but I can't find anyone clearly explaining in which country/region a given baseband in supposed to work well, and where it doesn't.
I need a Gingerbread baseband for my Optimus 3D that will fully work in Latin America region, I'm afraid to get in trouble if I flash the european GB baseband I found in this forum, and loose some (or all) frequencies in my country.
Thanks in advance!
Me too. I'm in Canada and when I flashed the euro gb baseband I lost all connectivity.

I know these boards have picked up a bit but it's kind of depressing considering all the action I see when I check up on the Sensation threads for my other phone. You'd think that because this phone is so sweet and comes completely unlocked there would be a lot of development going on.
Good Afternoon!
Just for fun I thought I would flash the recent GB KDZ file posted.
Still having the same issues registering on the network. :/

I flashed latest KDZ file for o3d even though i have a thrill 4g and 3g and all other things work great except i don't have 4g to test on this country

I have no idea why it's not working. Both AT&T and Bell use the 850 and 1900mhz frequencies for their respective UMTS networks, but up in Canada we can't even get the phone to recognize our network. I'd be happy with 3G speeds for now, but that's not even possible. I wonder if AT&T uses other bands for 3G speeds as well?
My phone is a P920 of European origin and have had to put the 3G baseband of a Thrill. This in Froyo. Also the one I have worked p920h.
Until no one KDZ for America or get a baseband for this continent, you lose the 3g frequencies 850 and 1900.
Keep in mind that the baseband is independent of the rom, which means that after installing the baseband you can put any rom, whether European or American.
The Ginger there so far is European and therefore everything is lost that frequency.
Sorry for my language.

Good Evening,
I wonder if a baseband from another Gingerbread device could be modified to work with the Optimus 3D. What about one from an Optimus 2X?
Just a thought...I wouldn't know where to begin!
just a quick question, my carrier works under 2100 Mhz I am located in Costa Rica, if I do put the euro version will the network not work....
---------- Post added at 08:28 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:10 PM ----------
my question is since I do not live in Europe, what exactly euro open means
I'm using euro gb fw, and everything is working fine, although I have an edge icon instead of 3g, think it's cause of the region can't remember if it happened with my old x10.
this can be an issue unless it's showed like that when not having data enabled
edit:
I'm on a 3g network and I have edge enabled :S, we need LAM baseband Q_Q
I happen to be in a 1900 umts AT&T area, but it was too spotty and I went back to Froyo. Though for those of us who have to wait, I have a froyo custom kernel with init.d support below (thrillz) that I've been running on my p925 on the roadrunner rom.

I figured I would install the GB KDZ again.
For no apparent reason after the reboot I was registered on the network (Bell) and have had no problems as of yet (Only has been an hour or so).
I wish I had an answer as to why it worked this time.
I will keep you posted!
Thanks, Audi.
yeah I'm in Canada too and eagerly await some usable Gingerbread with fully working baseband.
Apparently Rogers is one of the last carriers to get on board with Gingerbread and is holding up LG.

Good Morning,
My device is a Rogers device unlocked and used on the Bell network.
After flashing the V21a Gingerbread KDZ a second time I am having no issues at all!
I wish I could tell you why it worked this time when the original baseband flash method and my first flash of the V21a KDZ both resulted in network issues.
I didn't do anything differently the second time I flashed the KDZ and was immediately registered on the network. I have had no issues since lastnight.
I will let you know if anything changes!

Hi Audi.
Thanks for the info. I guess since you got on the bell network, the rogers network should also work? Maybe not actually because rogers GSM. Is your connection Gsm Too? I am a bit nervous flashing kdz file. Its not standard zip flash through cwm is it?
I also worried about flashing baseband.
Do you know if I have made nandrroid backup of my 2.2 and need to restore, will my backup flash 2.2 baseband back on automatically?
Thanks .
I use the same gsm network as at&t think it's the same as rogers, I randomly get dc from the network but comes back fast.
I think you should be aware that maybe your 3g network won't work using euro open fw
i'm always on edge :S

Hello!
When running speedtests I average between 2.5 and 5.5 Mbps (depending on the time of day). This is pretty much what I saw on Froyo. No complaints here!
Thanks, Audi.
Hi audi
How is your phone running lately? Any lockups, slowdowns, disconnects or anything? Full hardware working including wifi? Do you get 3g icon or edge?

Good Evening,
The phone is running great. I currently have the Acura ROM installed.
Battery life is an incredible improvement!
The icon I have is "H" (so 3G not HSPA+ yet); and the speeds are as previously mentioned averaging between 2.5 Mbps and 5.5 Mbps depending on the time of day and signal strength.
No random disconnects; voice and data (3G/WIFI) work without issue.
Thanks, Audi.

[Q] (help) motorola xoom 3g verizon ..updated to ics wifi only os

Hi guys I need help or info about this Ive always wanted Motorola Xoom wifi only but I received Verizon one with 3g not upgraded to lte . I rooted it and installed ics for the wifi only system from Google or android website its stock ..
And works actually very well no 3g ..nothing about service I don't mind since I'm not with Verizon and not planning to go with them I just need wifi but my question is ...is it right I mean everything works good only the battery It seems like honeycomb stock verizon build battery stays longer is it because of wifi only ice version ..or something I'm not sure if somebody can help me with info
Hmmm ... me too. I have a Xoom tablet arriving this week, and it was listed as "MZ600 Xoom, LTE ready, Verizon". Which rom version should I install? I do not plan to activate it with Verizon, as I already have a dinc running CM7 nightly build 258, and waiting for ics. I would just like to run ics on the Xoom. If I don't activate the Xoom, which rom should I use, or CAN I use??
If both of you are not planning to activate with Verizon, using a Wifi only ICS ROM won't be a bad idea. I too have installed this to a friend of mine and he hasn't experienced any issues. You will not be missing out of any features because the only main difference is the 3g / LTE radio.
So anyone has seen the stock ICS for the xoom 3G version?
AFAIK wifi only is the only model to get an official update. Running the wingray build on cdma or lte is just fine.

[Q] 4G Upgrade

I have an MZ601 3G Xoom that I purchased in Asia. I will be going to the US in a few weeks, and was wondering if someone could clear up a few things for me:
1. Is my Xoom eligible for the 4G upgrade?
2. If so, will I still be able to use my Xoom on 3G networks when I am in Asia and Europe?
3. How would I go about doing the upgrade in that it seems to be through Verizon and this Xoom has never been affiliated with Verizon?
4. Since I am running the EOS ICS version 1.0 ( fantastic ROM, by the way), I assume that I would need to change ROM versions after the upgrade?
I appreciate it if anyone could help clear up these questions so that I don't end up doing something that I will regret later on.
Thanks in advance!

Which one is better?

Hi guys.
I'm from Germany.
I want to know which xoom is the best.
The most important thing is the support. (Updates)
Are there difference or is the support the same (xoom 1,2,media)
Sent from my LG-P970 using xda premium
The Xoom 2 is an awful successor to the Xoom.
The Xoom Media is also not worth getting due to its lackluster support/development and the fact that it is not a GED.
If you are considering a Xoom, get the original Xoom.
And are there differece between the 3g and the wifi version
Sent from my LG-P970 using xda premium
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think there are basically 3 versions of the original Xoom:
MZ604 - wingray - wifi only
MZ600 - stingray - Verizon version
MZ601 and MZ603 - everest - gsm version
Now here is the tricky part. The stingray started out as a EVDO Verizon tablet, but then was upgradable to LTE by sending it in. If I understand correctly, all of the custom roms for stingray are for the LTE upgraded version. It is now TOO LATE to send them in for the upgrade. If you buy a stingray that wasn't upgraded, you are screwed. Personally I would stay away from the ones that weren't upgraded. Also keep in mind the everest seems to have a little less developer support than the wingray and stingray. You can't go wrong with the wingray.
Okay. Thx. Correct me when i'm wrong. The wingray Version is the wifi only .am i right?

Correct. That is the one I have.
I've got the so called european xoom (mz601), but what i think is that it's not european, it's international. Thats because it works in almost every country on earth (it is a standard gsm bands). For example it works on AT&T in america (i've not tested this, but google says that it does work).
I myself have used my Xoom in most of europe, in russia and middle east. It's just great. The only thing i don't like about the mz601 is the lack of development (it only has 2 custom roms: Team EOS and Codename Android). But the fact that you can travel the world and use a 3g connection almost everywhere is very nice. You cant do that with the verizon Xoom. The wingray is of course very good (it's a Google Experience Device) but i myself need the 3g.
Even if i lived in the states i still would not get the stingray version. I would rather get the umts_everest and have the option to use other service providers than verizon or wingray if i really did not need the 3g/4g connectivity.
I hope anyone from the states can confirm that the mz601 works in america?
i actually want a xoom with 3g.
Cause of Google drive.
Are there informations about a jelly bean Update for the 3g Version in the EU
Sent from my LG-P970 using xda premium
Definitely xoom1
Support is perfect! Official motorola support in europe might be paintfull with long waiting for updates ec but once you root it and install custom rom you get support, updates, everything you need
3G owner on smooth eos-jb-
Good luck!
okay thx. So i will Buy xoom 1 3g.
Is rooting diffucult Or is there a easy one click Methode.

[Q] Which Radio for AWS on CM10.1?

Hi
I just bought an unlocked i727 (AT&T Skyrocket). In addition to unlocking it, the previous owner also modded the phone to work on AWS bands (HSDPA 1700/2100). I was all impressed by this feat, but now that I come to XDA, I find all the guy probably really did is flash the radio, which probably both unlocked the phone and enabled AWS (explained here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029650). Currently in "About phone", the Build Number is IMM76D.UCLF6 and the Baseband version says unknown.
The phone is running stock Android 4.0.4 (ICS), and I want to put on the latest CM10.1 stable build, but when I go to this page, it says I need a Jelly Bean radio: http://www.teamchopsticks.org/p/cm101-release-notes2.html
So now I'm worried that if I choose the wrong radio, I'll no longer have AWS bands, which I need since those are the only bands my carrier (Mobilicity) uses. Can someone please tell me which of the radios listed on the teamchopsticks blog I should use to keep the AWS bands on CM10? I'm guessing its the T-mobile version (UVMC6)...?
Thanks!
Edit: Alternatively, could I just install CM9 and leave the current radio as is? I don't really care if I have the latest android version, I just want to get rid of the stock AT&T rom and its associated bloatware.

You can't unlock the operator lock with a radio. You need both a specific radio and a specific firmware.
AWS support is not a special feature that can be enabled, afaik it's a standard function of this phone.
The Radios made specifically for this phone (Rogers & AT&T) should have full AWS support, I don't know about the others.
Also the TeamChopsticks site is mighty dated.
You should check out the official threads in General and Development.
Also these links are always good to have:

Hmmm... well do you know if its true that CM10 requires a "Jelly Bean Radio"?
Or am I better off just loading CM9? That way I shouldn't have to modify the radio, right?
Thanks!

You could try flashing CM9, then it might even say in what radio you have.
Yes, CM10 requires a Jellybean radio.
If you flash the Rogers radio in my signature or the AT&T radio you'll still have AWS and it won't relock your phone.
There's really no reason not to flash a JB radio and CM10.1.. you're not losing out on anything by doing it.

AWS band in HSDPA (or HSPA+) is not enabled in at&t or Roger's radios, since those 2 networks don't use it for HSDPA.. It's used for LTE (700,1700/2100)
AWS 1700/2100 band in HSDPA can be enabled by flashing T-Mobile blaze JB radio...It should work on cm10.1 since it is a JB radio...
So I spent pretty much all of yesterday reading up on the subject. Since we were under a tornado watch all day anyways, I really had nothing else to do!
After a while, I found the "secret codes" (listed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1492700), and punched in *#1234#. This told me that my radio was "T769-UVLB7", which I believe is the 4th one from the bottom on this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400, ie the Blaze radio. That would make sense because it gels with my Android version (4.0.4). Anyways, googling that radio eventually led me to this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1507825 which had a ton of useful information. So thats the radio mystery solved.
From the same info screen, I could see that my ROM was i727-UCLF6, a somewhat outdated stock ICS rom. So now I know what my phone's current status is in case I need to bring it back because my other combinations don't work for some reason.
So I think I've decided to go with the Pacman JB rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2178402) and if it doesn't work with my current radio, I'll first try the updated Blaze radio, UVMB1, listed third in that same list I linked to above. If that doesn't work, I'll try the others in that list until I get a combination that does (probably starting with UCMC1). I'm also considering the Jedi Mind Trick T989 rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1818305). I'll post results when I have them!
Thanks for the help everyone!

So what you're saying is: AWS for LTE is enabled in Rogers and AT&T, but, it's disabled for HSPA by default.
I was under the impression that 2100 is used for 3G/HSPA by default eitherway, but you're saying it's not?

AWS band in HSDPA (or HSPA+) is not enabled in at&t or Roger's radios, since those 2 networks don't use it for HSDPA.. It's used for LTE (700,1700/2100)
AWS 1700/2100 band in HSDPA can be enabled by flashing T-Mobile blaze JB radio...It should work on cm10.1 since it is a JB radio...

Didn't notice any difference after flashing Blaze LB7 radio. Vodafone has 2100 for 3G/HSPA. Already had full signal with RUXUMA7 and it was still full with LB7 and speed was the same (3.7Mbit down/2.6Mbit up)..

I would recommend you do more reading and reading before you mess with the radio flashing
Good luck

AWS (Advanced Wireless Service) protocol uses the 2100 for downlink
and the 1700 for uplink..
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Wireless_Services
The skyrocket has the 2100 in 3G and LTE
but 1700 is not enabled in 3G
Hence the AWS band (UMTS band 4) is not supported in 3G

Thank you for explaining this, I didn't know all the specifics.
You are correct, the Blaze radio disables LTE and enables AWS.
As you can see here 1700 is not in use in Europe. So the Blaze JB radio is of no use to me.
So in the end, the Pacman JB 4.2.2 ROM worked without a hitch. I did not have to flash the radio at all, it is still working as before.
Baseband still shows up as unknown (the nifty secret codes no longer work), and kernel is now 3.0.72 cyanogenmod.
The phone's working greatI love it when a plan comes together!
What speeds do you get currently on speed test app ?
If your goal is a rom with no bloatware you can debloate a stock tw one...Personally I can never live with cm camera...
At the moment, only about 1.5 MBps, but I am not in a good service area. Even so, everything seems to load quickly.
My only complaints so far would be the ROM itself... already crashed a couple of times, and it has a bizarre way of connecting to the computer (no USB storage mode).

So it turns out that it may noit have been the ROM after all, but GO Launcher. Everytime I get a new phone, I get sucked in by GO Launcher's sexy looks, but the result is always the same: lagginess and crashes. After switching to Apex launcher, things seem to have settled down.
In terms of the radio, I did some more traveling around today and I would have to say that reception is not as good as it is on my AWS Nexus S, so I might try some different radios after all. Just want to confirm though that if I use an i727 radio (like UCMC1) instead of a T989 radio (like the Blaze radio), I will no longer have access to AWS. Is that right?
Right now I'm thinking UVMB1 from here might be the first stop: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1895400
If you ask me , TW stock debloated and tweaked by me is my and always be my rom ...
For the reception, if you have to have the best reception for a network that uses AWS 1700/2100mhz bands for HSDPA/HSPA+ , the skyrocket is not your phone...Or you have to live with issues every now and then...
That's why your nexus s(the T version) has better reception it's a device with native 1700/2100 band support...
Try some other T mobile radios from the blaze,Hercules or galaxy note 1 (remeber you have to use jellybean radios with any jeallybean based rom) and see what gives you best reception, but again don't expect miracles...
Or another note, try a stock jb uvmc6 rom (flash a skyrocket kernel for the roation problem) and uvmc6 radio or another T-Mobile radio as a combo if it is better regarding general network performance...
Edit: answering your question, yes ..skyrocket or Roger's modem will not have 1700/2100 AWS HSPA connectivity...And that "first stop" was my first advice for you...UVMB1 radio...

Hey mahanddeem,
Thanks again for the help. Even after removing Go Launcher, I'm still getting a few random reboots/shutdowns per day - enough to annoy me. I did some searching and found out about the sticky button issue, but I have a feeling thats not my problem. Usually when the phone shuts down on its own, I have to remove the battery before the phone will turn on again. I'm not completely discounting the possibility that I have a sticky button, it just seems odd that the solution involves pulling the battery. That makes it seem more like a software/Rom issue to me, so I'm thinking of going back to a TW-based rom, but I don't want to restore my original stock with all its extra bloat-ware. All that to say that I was hoping you could tell me which de-bloated TW Rom you are using. I've found Embryo, which looks interesting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2074328. Is that what you have?

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm trying to avoid a full stock ROM, mostly because of the bloatware and branding (I can't stand seeing a corporate logo every time I start my phone!) - this is basically the reason I put a custom ROM on in the first place - plus the extra control of course. If this is the only thing that will stop my phone from randomly rebooting and shutting down though, then I'll have to consider it. Hopefully the stripped down TW version that you recommend will help though.

Heh heh true enough I still haven't tried flashing anything - I'm still educating myself. The last thing I want to do is start something I can't recover from!

I take it you don't know how to root a stock Rom and delete the bloatware yourself?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
I'm pretty sure I could root it, that much seems within my limited skill set. But first determining HOW to remove the bloatware, and then WHICH things I can safely remove... That I'm not sure of. Besides, if there are already ROM's out there that have done this, why would I duplicate the effort? I'm all in favour of doing things just so I can learn how to do them, but the fact is I have other things I need to do with my time besides fiddling with my phone (family, work, motorbike.... and seemingly endless friggin yardwork!)

It's very simple, there are plenty of ways to remove bloat, plenty of guides to do it, and charts that show what things are and if you should remove them.
Embryo would be a nightmare for you. Read the thread. If you don't have the time to research and learn, you should not be flashing things on your phone.

Do your researches, it's not gonna happen that anyone here would put a long extensive guide for you so you can "take a look" at it during your coffee time...
Everybody here is learning everyday from others' posts, problems and discussions...So either you put some effort into learning or nobody's gonna spoon feed you..
As a clue , look at Mohan deodexed stock UCMC1,flash,root,start freezing apps that you know you'll not use...Then using any root explorer you can permanently uninstall system apps...And by the way you can use a custom boot animation even on stock, search for how to...
