I just bought my Nexus S GSM Phone and rooted it, the one problem I'm having with it is the fact that it has no SD card, does that mean that whenever I flash a new ROM I will have no choice but to backup all my pictures and music to my computer and then wipe data? or is there someway to avoid this, thanks in advance for any help.
P.S. any information on the phone and what you would recommend (batteries, cases, whatever to do with the phone) would be greatly appreciated. I'm liking this phone very much, but I'm concerned about the factory wipe everytime I need/want to switch to a new ROM.
Thank you

Nope it doesnt wipe your pictures and all. It only wipes the data and system partitons.
You can wipe your sd card by selecting format sd card in CWM/

Okay, what does formatting your android do?
does it clear all data, leaving your system files on it?
I've been planning to reset my android phone for awhile now, I just wanna know this before, cause it seems very risky. I want to be able to always factory reset my phone at all times, so yeah.. :]
Just as you said clears data and leaves system files.

Okay, thanks! I just had to ask to make sure cause I didn't wanna risk anything.
It does not erase the SD card. Your photos, music, ringtones, etc will still be there when you flash a new rom

Hello. This will seem like a dumb question but I'll ask it anyway.
So, at this time I am running Revolution HD 3.0.3 and have a ton of applications and stuff on the phone. What I noticed, is that my phone has gotten really, really laggy and slow [ don't know why ]. So I'd like to start fresh [ like installing windows on a new HDD ]. My idea was to do a factory reset and then clean the SD card so it's empty. [ I have no original back up, don't think I need it. ]
But, will the factory reset wipe recovery and Clockwork from the phone too? Or will I still be able to install the new ROM?
Oh, I don't really care if I loose all the apps and settings. But I'll do a backup of my files, because those I need.
So, will my plan succeed?
It always good to full wipe before flashing new ROMs to clean up crap. Clearing junk off your SD card can't hurt either since Android puts loads of files there as well.
Just do backup in recovery, full wipe, and restore. Should do the trick
So, factory reset and memory card wipe won't kill Clockwork and all the other things I need to install a new ROM?
No, no, don't do it from menu. Shut phone down, hold -vol key and power up. Then choose recovery and backup. Then wipe, then restore backup.

As I am thinking of installing the new Revolutionary HD, I think I can skip this step, because it comes with super wipe script. So, I'll stick to that. BUT, should I delete the stuff from my SD card before or after installing the rom?

Nope, unless you want to starc completely clean. There are some files stored on sd, but they get deleted with wipe. Sit back and relax.
Hey guys,
Just want to say again how awesome this forums is. I have a Sprint Shift that I flashed 2 weeks ago with CM7 and it has been nice and stable, love it.
However, I have an issue now. It seems that my signal has gotten very poor and often switches to roaming and then back and is still worse in the same areas where I was pre-flashing and rooting.
Does rooting and flashing affect the PRL at all (I had to downgrade etc...)?
And how can I easily upgrade to the latest PRL? I am not interested in the Verizon PRL since I don't want to get kicked off for excessive roaming.
I searched some posts and the process seemed confusing and one talked of a different program that makes it easier but never went into details.
Would really appreciate some help. Thank you.

Make a nandroid backup of your CM7 rom. Flash a stock sense rom like Synergy and update your prl and profile. Sometimes I do it twice just to make sure Make sure you are updated to the latest radio's both wimax and cellular radio's before you update your prl though.
When you downgrade with root it's flashing older radio's onto your device including wimax radio.
Next restore cm7 nandroid backup, hope that helps.

Thanks guys. I did read that thread but I'm not sure what a Nandroid backup is.
Is that form the boot screen from the clockwork app? It just backs everything up to the SD card?
Now when I flash to the Synergy ROM do I have to follow the same steps I did for CM7? Like clear the caches and all those steps that I followed when I installed CM7?
Lastly, how can I make sure to update to the latest radio??
Thank you so much for your help guys, I was beginning to think that Sprint started to suck and that I Would have to switch carriers.
Also, I am having trouble figuring out which radio to flash. CDMA or Wimax? Is this something that I do when I reload synergy or flash after I load CM7 again?
But mostly I don't know which version to download. Thanks so much for your help in advance.
I was using this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357157
Im surprised there is no similar how-to on radios and PRL

You make a nandroid backup in recovery, it's the backup option in the backup/restore menu. It will make a complete backup of your current ROM and can be restored on the same menu.
Whenever you flash a fresh ROM you need to fully wipe. Wiping cache, dalvik and data.. Optionally formatting system and data.
For the radios check this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1082192
Sent from my PG06100 using Tapatalk
Yeah basicly what crump said. Just make sure before flashing the radio's in hboot/bootloader that you wipe cache/dalvik-cache in recovery or just do a data factory wipe. When I installed the radio's it was before a lot of knew that not wiping cache and dalvik-cache could make it so your phone won't boot, so I just ended up having to pull my sdcard out in order to boot into recovery to wipe. As soon as I wiped I powered off my phone, put my sdcard back in and it booted justed just fine.
Thanks so much guys!
So I just checked the PRL on my phone and it is already the latest PRL... So it must be the older radios that are causing the issue?
So can I just flash the new radios right now with the current CM7 rom that I have?
Would I still need to clear the cache etc.. if it's possible to do it to my existing rom?
Also, do I select from Froyo-Based RUUs or Gingerbread RUUs?
Thanks again everyone
And just a heads up, you can't update prl using synergy rom, as the feature doesn't work properly...

That and the ESPT were not working correctly, although it might have changed. The Dev may have updated it.
Guys so which do I select for the radios?
And can I update them with my current ROM?

You should be able to update with your current Rom. The most recent Radios are for CDMA: 1.08.00.0506 , and for WiMax: 27240. Just make sure you follow the instructions on the thread.
And if your still stuck while reading the instructions there is a video in the development section. Can't link you to it cause I'm on my phone

I believe THESE are the ones you mean .
Oh man, thank you guys so much BUT,
I followed the video exactly.
I first wiped the dalvik and cache, rebboted my phone, then shut down. and booted into hboot.
Followed the video everything went smooth, pressed power to reboot after everything got updated.
Now my phone is stuck at the HTC Screen! Help, I don't know what happened or what to do, I followed all the instructions exactly! I cant use my phone!
Nevermind guys, I panicked but kept reading. Saw someone post this
"Remove ur battery then ur sdcard. Power up into recovery (hold volume down + power) wipe dalvik cache and cache partition, then reboot. After reboot, power down again insert ur sdcard and power ur phone like normal and u should be all good. Just happened to me this morning and its all good now!"
Did exactly that and it worked! Thanks soo much everyone, you guys are the best!

That's why I said both here and in the radio thread that I did a data factory reset before flashing the radios. It doesn't seem like wiping cache's always helps to avoid getting stuck on the splash screen, having to pull battery and sdcard ect.

Flashing radios will screw up your boot. Definitely need to wipe /system, and more importantly format /cache partition via advanced -> mounts and storage in CWM, as well as dalvik and reflash your rom after flashing either the Wimax or cellular radios. I've gotten stuck at the white HTC screen a billion times. Might even want to try booting up with a blank SD card or a different SD card. It seems that my SD card has some corruption because when I plug my phone in via usb or via sd card reader windows asks to scan the sd card. So I plan on formatting my SD card soon. But either way I was stuck at the white HTC screen after flashing my radio and tried everything and it didn't start booting my rom until I put in a blank SD card.
Also regarding PRLs: I'm back on PRL 60683 and off of 11115. I think I'll be staying here.

They'd only affect mobile data performance. 11115 didn't seem to be roaming on to Verizon anymore and I had issues with connectivity stability so I went back to the latest Sprint PRL (60683)
Hi I feel likes pain with my endless questions, but I was wondering how I could flash a new ROM without wiping my data because it takes forever to copy everything back to my phone
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA
You dont have to deletr them for every Rom. In some you dont have to
you can back up threw titanium
^This. Back all your necessary stuff up because if you're jumping between roms without wiping, you can run into a slew of other issues. You can. Not saying you will, but this ensures no errors when your new rom is set up.
Not apps
Im not necessarily talking about Apps, I personally love and use Titanium. Im talking about music and stuff on the 16gbs of memory that takes forever to copy over and back.

Flashing a new rom wont effect your sd card. Well, if you formating it in cwm it will Just copy your rom to you sd card, boot into cwm and wipe then flash! Don't format you sd card
try not to format your sd card and face the consequence of fc on some app but in some rom you dont need that just wipe factory and cache and dalvik..

You don't have to wipe sdcard. I've never wiped it except when unlocking boot loader.

I am getting desparate with my phone state SGS3, as funny things are happening like it suddenly goes crazy and opens apps after apps etc... Also applications that can not be traced, I am currently on 4.1.2 XXELL4 version, and I got advised to wipe data partition and cache, which as I understand it quite risky process of losing what I have, so do PLEASE inform is there a safe way, like you guys develop programs for us amateurs to do it automatically and safely, regaining our previous phone state?
My intention is to really get rid of junks I have on my phone and get a nice new obedient one I had before?
Thank you
You should make a backup of all apps and contacts ( for contacts you can sync with google) and then go into recovery mode and do wipe data factory reset and wipe cache partition. Finally do reboot system now and then reinstall the app backup and restore contacts.
I hope i help you and i wait for your news.
Hoping you have a recovery mode called cwm, and are aware of it,
You can wipe cache and data
It would get your phone back in state as if it were out of the manufacturer's factory!
All apps you've installed would be wiped out

Use a higher version of cwm...I'm sure it would be floating around in xda
Also just do a factory reset from settings or flash a new rom that should solve the issue
And Use TB Pro ..(just a suggestion) much more useful and worth the price...That can restore app's data and app alone as you wish...
