I want one, is it worth it?

I want one of these and I can go get one from my local staples. Is this tablet worth it?
I know we have root and such but is the tablet going to be fast enough to support 2.3 or 3.0 when it launches. I know its the dual core tegra but all the reviews say this thing is slow.
Feedback ?

its slow with the stock interface. once you root and replace that with zpad, its pretty zippy. ive got no regrets yet, and i almost constantly have regrets after spending a little cash on electronics.

I'm in the same boat... I've been looking for a tablet, non iPad, and saw this in the black friday ads for Staples. Just noticed that there is no price difference between now and those ads. $400. So I'm tempted to pick one up. I have a Epic 4g and enjoy how android 2.1 works so far. I think the hardware sounds good just hesitant because of software issues... but as much as I know those will be ironed out by the smart people on these forums. I may just pick one up tonight.

I tried to lay out some of the current pros and cons, so feel free to look it over. Everyone's needs are different. I happen to like mine and plan on keeping it.

i originally purchased one, then i was lucky to grab 2 more that were refurbs, and i have been using all the builds here plus ones i have been trying to get stable of my own, only to find that it is nearly impossible to truelly screw this thing up beyond repair, not saying it isnt possible, just saying it is hard to do it.
i like the rothnic builds as the zpad builds are based on hardware that is identical to the gtab, but sold under another name malata i think. that is not to say that all the hard work robeet has done is not great as his builds are highly stable as well. Great job to both guys.
i currently have 7 builds of my own. the first two are not based on zpad, which are the ones i am having a major issue in figuring out what i am screwing up. on the 5 other builds, i am using zpad as my base and adding a very trimmed version of andriod 2.2. i am trying to keep everything to only what works all the time everytime in my zpad builds, where the two non zpad builds are based on my own version of the kernal, could be my whole problem, but neither are stable yet. for me to release my 5 versions, small differences with how games load, flash, utube, and some office stuff...apks...would not help anyone as rothnics builds and those who helped him are superior to mine as of today. hopefully, i will figure out my culprit that is causing my issues within the builds.
i will only release what will work 100% of the time that i create, otherwise, i am only congesting the forum with useless crap and not actually helping anyone...

The nearest sears that will probably carry it on thanksgiving is about 100 miles away... so I might just bite the $20 bullet and freebie SD cards and case and pick one up tonight.
If I ever get free time I'd love to get involved with the development... just always busy with other stuff.

The core of the tablet is a dual core 1Ghz Tegra 2 w/ 512 mb of ram. Its very close to the fastest ARM hardware running Android atm so 2.3 will be no problem. Nobody can tell whether 3.0 will require dramatically more powerful hardware but its doubtful considering 600mhz Droid 1s are running 2.2 just fine.
That said, the ability to support isn't the issue here. The problem is with official support from Viewsonic. They need to release their source for any devs to be able to get deep enough to upgrade to a new build (correct me if I'm wrong here). Barring that they would have to release their own version of updated Android. Considering the condition of the initial build I am not hopeful Viewsonic or the OEM will supply this support so long after purchase.
While not having the latest Android version is going to suck, its not going to reduce the functionality of the device. I think this hits a sweet spot atm. Its not nearly as expensive as the Galaxy Tab but it gives you something to mess around with until the real Tier 1 tablets come out next year. The Galaxy Tab is still build on the same non-tablet OS so investing $600 at this time doesn't seem wise. In addition, the powerful hardware keeps hope alive that this tablet can be brought up to snuff even in a year when we'll likely have 1.2 dual core 1gb tablets.

i do not think they will support it, or only for a very short duration, which is why i am trying to develop something.
according to a customer service person, it is cosmetic issues nothing highly important, which leaves me unsettled.

picked mine up today, with high hopes for this tegra chip... but so far viewsonic has managed to destroy what could and should be a sweet set up... havent been able to push a rom onto it yet, still looking to root but even still my EVO blows this thing out of the ocean, lets be honest here... did they pull this screen from some speak and spell from the 80's?
and you with guys with the epics are going to laugh when a movies playing on it
its late, so in the morning i'll get back with how it fairs with a root and rom dosage
ohh ya... whats with the constant wifi error? out of the box a wifi device should at least connect to WIFI, unless viewsonic was going for a true 80's speak and spell

Stopped at staples last night and grabbed one. I'm looking for an instant on web browser/video player. Coming from my epic the screen sucks but nothing I've seen compares to my epics screen. The stock device is pretty laggy but I'm about to flash a custom rom and try that out. I have 14 days to return and staples said they would take it back no questions asked. Ill post more later.

I think with the upgraded rom with the dell home and flash is great, and now that we have the full market I can't bring my self to return it. .. lol

Get it at Sears for $340 with a $50 replacement plan. Can't go wrong there if you flash it and break it... No regrets here either. If you are like most of us cruising this forums for cool stuff, you will love.
Can't see myself owning and iPad and be just like everyone else. I have yet to see to Android devices (from Android fans) that look the same....

- Returned 1st one after 2 days due to constant loops (wanted to exchange but no stock).
Lots of force closes with stock firmware + external sdcard / usb stick unrecognized.
- Picked up 2nd one and replaced with Zpad 1106 firmware:
* Very Zippy, have not experienced FC's so far.
* External sdcard / usb thumbdrive work fine.
- Now my son can have my old 12" Dell XT!

I had a dream...

...about Honeycomb. And it's not like I'm an Android developer or even an addict who's flashed a hundred different ROMs on his twelve different Android devices or anything. I actually just decided two days ago that I didn't want to use the stock gTablet ROM. So I don't know what the deal is with dreaming about mobile platform releases.
None of my friends are nerdy enough to appreciate this, so I was hopin' to get some love from the xda community. Love your work, by the way.

I dont even care about honeycomb anymore. The Froyo ROMs run extremely fast and stable. I care more about getting more games, apps, and widgets. This is the main problem with Android tablets. Not enough love in the Android market!

Honeycomb is laggy and buggy according to reports. Froyo is stable and fast. Latest and greatest versus fast and stable. Take your pick.

Actually, Froyo was having some issues with some apps that Gingerbread does not, so I upgraded to Vegan-Tab 7.0 and haven't looked back. I don't know what Honeycomb can provide that I don't already have...

The major issue for me is video play back. Thats the biggest reason Im unable to leave Froyo. Then next to that is the speed. Its kind of like comparing Windows XP to Vista. As far as I can see from playing around with Honeycomb at BestBuy there is no real leap in OS. There is still so much to improve in the way of a user experience on Android. The basics are there but if you have no apps, games or widgets to install your just stairing at a wallpaper.

That's funny. Donut is neither stable or latest or greatest. You're gonna kill goodintentions with that post.

Donut is perfectly stable and quite delicious. Especially when Krispy Creme is making them fresh. mmmmmmmmmmmmm....tasty. Eclair is just a fancy french donut. It just gives up at the first sign of trouble.

I'm writing off Honeycomb. There's no reason to expect it will ever go to AOSP. Google didn't want to release it because it was hacky, and they didn't want unscrupulous providers or devs trying to shoehorn it onto phones.
Ice Cream Sandwich, on the other hand, is being heralded as the merging of the two codelines. If that's the case (and we'll find out for sure within a week), there's no reason Google shouldn't put it out to AOSP. Once that's done, nobody will say two words about Honeycomb again.
So, if you're "stuck" with perfectly serviceable Froyo/GB for another four to six months, just to pull a timeframe from my nether regions, is that really such an impediment? What's in Honeycomb that's so compelling (other than support for a few tablet-specific apps)?

You guys should try nightly CM7 from Cyanogen which is to me stable, faster and reliable, and gives great battery life when you combine with Pershoot's kernel.
I am running nightly Cyanogen on my phone EVO and my Gtablet. Could not be more happier for the choice I have made to go with Cyanogen.

I dont see any ROM being considered usable daily if it cant play back movies well.

Would you guys say it'd be wise getting a Xoom at this point? I love the connectivity and dont mind the weight. Its the screen im not sure about...u guys happy with it?
Now that its been around for a wile do you guys have any regrets or would you recommend it instead of other, more recent and lightweight tablets?

I'll jump right in and say that I love mine. I've got a great screen, and there are some that seem a bit washed out, so you might want to look at the one you're getting just to make sure you like the colors and saturation is ok. Xoom has a more natural level of saturation than some of the other tabs that are going for drama. I think this is a great time to get a Xoom because Ice Cream Sandwich is coming and I think it will solve many of the issues people have been having with stock Honeycomb. Those of us who are rooted and use custom Roms/kernels already have a taste of ICS as the developers have tweaked and added lots of functionality to the basic Honeycomb OS, but with the ICS source code to be released, we'll have lots of great custom roms, because the xoom is a developer's tablet. This tab is only getting better. Still has great hardware specs, is tough, almost un-brickable and does just about all I could ask for. There is room for improvement though, especially on the software side, so it will be an exciting time.
If you can get a good deal on a new or gently used Xoom, I advise that you go for it.

Don't have a xoom wish i had wait a week later, i do enjoy my acer 500.

I just bought one from Ebay - UK one originally from John Lewis. It has 3g and Wifi - very excited and it only cost me £280.
I currently have a rooted, overclocked and tweaked HTC Desire HD and absolutely love it. I get 2 days battery life out of it, lots of great tweaks and am so glad that I had my iPhone stolen 8 months ago! I would have ignored Android if it weren't for those theives!
I am now looking forward to rooting and tinkering about with my Xoom once it arrives.... Monday hopefully!

Looks like you guys are getting the 3.2 update OTA for those that are not rooted. You could accept the update and then unlock, fastboot flash CWM recovery (I prefer the solarnz R4c v3.2.0.0, myself) and then root using solarnz' Universal Xoom Root zip and then flash Tiamat Moray Rom, etc...

Is ICS going to be worth it?

I know that many are excited about the 'sweetness' of ICS that's suppose to drop this month. I did have a TF Prime for 2 weeks (returned it due to issues). I miss the shiny svelte tab for sure, but it had way too many issues to deal with. No thx on being a BETA tester for ASUS unless they decide to send me a tablet for free.
Anyway it seems we've been hearing/talking about ICS for ages now (in fact it's only been 9 months or so I'd guess). When details where finally released on it, I admit I was somewhat disappointed.
Sure for people on Gingerbread, ICS is a huge step forward, but for all of us that have been using HC for up to nearly a year now, it didn't seem to offer that much.
Looking over wikipedia the only thing that I see that gets me excited is Hardware Acceleration of the UI, just about every other feature either exists in HC, is available in apps, or makes little difference to those of us using a TF101 (IMHO).
Now i will admit that once the Dev's create a stable ROM I'll drop that onto the device but I'm just not that excited for a new font. I do think that ICS being both a tablet and phone OS is good going forward for app development, and we should see those advantages play out over time in a more stable environment as well as more available apps, but as it stands currently I'm just not that excited for ICS.

Talk about different user experiences ....WOW....I wish that Google could somehow shut down everything prior to Gingerbread, and force everyone up, with at least 37% of devices using these long outdated OS versions, it's no wonder that we constantly hear the 'fragmented' comment about Android.

I'm not sure what kind of ground breaking innovative features you were expecting in ICS. Although I agree that some of these features are available with third party apps, I believe your average everyday user will benefit from having them built in rather than needing to search through the market once they hear of some feature they would enjoy. You have to remember that we are almost surely the minority of overall Android users here on XDA compared to the general public, as we are more comfortable tinkering with our devices than others. And anything that can bring Android tablets closer to on par with the iPad, currently at the top of the tablet world, is a benefit to the Android platform and is "worth it."
As far as the fragmentation goes, I don't think the different OS versions you mentioned are what most people refer to as the "fragmentation" of Android. Rather, it is the manufacturers skin (HTC's Sense, Motorola MotoBlur, etc.) of each platform, which can be confusing to common users when switching between them. However, this is part of the beauty of Android; users can pick which skin suits them best, or as power users such as those of us on XDA can do, change the Android software if we like the hardware of the device but don't care for the software. Granted, more to your point, most iPhone users are probably on IOS 4 or above compared to those on Gingerbread or above, although I can't verify this fact with a quick Google search.
IMHO, I'm more excited to see CyanogenMod 9 on the TF101 than ICS in general. I've been a loyal user of Android Revolution HD, but I'm looking forward to see what the CM team has to offer in regards to the options/customizations available seen in every other CM ROM (AR is based on stock TF101 ROM, with plenty of enhancements of course).

If you would have tried out paulburton's ICS port you would see the truly immense differences that it brings. Honeycomb was not a finished product on is release and was only pushed out to compete with the iPad so there were a lot of things wrong with it. Now with ICS we will have a smother experience along with greater uniformity. The promise of CM9 is just the icing on the cake

I didn't find much that i could criticize about the device ( other then price)....the thing was solid and just worked (which is more then i can say about the Prime)....I'm looking forward to the MeMo hopefully by then ICS will have been patched up to a level that makes it robust. The padphone as well looks good (and being able to use this dock is sweet)...but i do wonder if it will even make its way to NA
As for expectations for ICS....I don't know maybe I thought we'd see something revolutionary....like User profiles....more support for external devices like DVD drives... native printer support

Its virtual machine on top of linux so most of what he is saying could be done but would obviously be cm based or aosp done by our devs
User profiles are available already theres a root app that creates partitions for each profile or user
Printer support i know through bluetoth theres a couple apps for it but nothing native or other than wifi/bluetooth
Im just saying its good to dream and in this guys case both the things he mentioned are do-able

I've tried the HoneyComb on a variety of Android tablets (transformer, Toshiba thrive, galaxy tab 10.1, acer, and some others), and it seems laggy: scrolling the home screen left and right lags when doing it fast. is ICS better and faster on the original transformer (for those who tried the ports)?
I'm planning on getting an EEE Transformer (not Prime) soon, before they get out of the market. Already it got sold out in 2 local shops who put them on promotion, preparing for the prime. I might find the base 16GB Wifi only for around €350.

All android printing apps are printer dependent. Android has no printing layer. I think this is ridiculous. Android has much more potential for being a desktop replacement than iOS (I use it for 90% of the tasks I use my MacBook Pro for) but there is no printing layer.

For the whiny little snots who don't think the TF101/HC is fast enough or must always have the latest versions, ICS ought to be worth it. Everything else is just evolution like Froyo -> Gingerbread. Worth it but not a game killer as long as stuff works. I prefer ICS to HC the same as I prefer GB to Froyo.
On the Prime I really noticed the speed difference in ICS, but was already 250% satisified with the TF101 speed under HC (which isn't all that different from the Prime on HC IMHO).

im an update junkie first and foremost but i am eager for ics for other reasons as well. CM9 is awesome. But a stable release allows custom roms to pick out the latest working code. Even a semi stock but optimized rom with custom oc kernel is great.

The only thing that you must have notice was the browser speed. It lags terribly on HC during loading of the page, but from what I read it also lags on ICS sometimes, so I don't know if the update will be worth it.

Hmmm..thanks! I never even thought to look in the market, i have a canon pixma mp495, which is listed under compatible printers with the app Canon EPP, so maybe it will work
I'll let you guys know if it is worth it. (replacing more and more functions of my laptop daily this transformer is)

I have a brother wifi printer and there is a nice app for it. It has been updated several times since I first downloaded it. I have it on my tf and my captivate. It has helped me greatly.
For example, yesterday I picked up my daughter after work and went home. She fell asleep about 15 minutes before we got home. And, we were planning on going to dinner because we had a coupon. So, I pulled in the driveway, left the car running, let my cappy connect to my wifi and printed the coupon from my phone. My wife grabbed it and joined us in the car while my daughter continued to sleep peacefully.
I never thought a smart phone could help my daughter get a better nap until yesterday.

Opera Mobile has been my daily browser on each, so I can't say that I noticed much. Page loading in the stock still tends to be slow. What is different on the Prime, is how much faster/smoother the ICS UI is compared to HC on the Prime. I'm almost tempted to hit the force GPU rendering option in Settings -> Developer Options, just to see how wide spread it can be.

You should see Apple's OS fragmentation, it's MUCH worse than that. Steve Jobs was a liar when we told the world of Android fragmentation.

Fragmentation plagues any device with frequent OS changes..I'm still on Windows XP on one PC, windows Vista on two of them, and Win7 on another PC..also, my wife has gingerbread on her phone, I have honeycomb on my tab, and ICS on my (identical model to my wife's) phone. Eh..any technology that becomes so quickly updated and made obsolete so easily will create such fragmentation..people can't always afford to upgrade just because their device is replaced with a new model, some people just don't like change even when OS updates are available. This is also exacerbated when the old OS will not run on older devices thus updates are not possible for many people who would like to have them. Perhaps ICS will run for a while until Jelly Bean comes out and allow old froyo and GB devices to leave the market and consumers retire them, and more devices will be consolidated on Android 4.x- will certainly make developing cross-platform apps easier to achieve.
Of course, now that I have ICS, I can't wait to see what JB is going to add to my device..

How does Jellybean run on the Nexus S

Due to unfortunate circumstances I have had to let my Note go recently. I have a blackberry in use right now. I thought I could use it until I was able to save to buy a proper phone but I do not think I could wait that long!!! Every time I look at it, I want to throw up. It is TERRIBLE!!!
SO I ordered a nice used Nexus S i9020a ATnT version on ebay (great rom support!!!). I was just wondering, as its a single core device with "just" 512mb ram, does it perform satisfactorily for general use and gaming etc on JB?

You will be satisfied as long as you are not expecting it to run like some supersonic dual core device. Keep in mind it is old technology and JB drives the phone to about its max but their is some wonderful JB roms and kernels out there for the Nexus S.

I wouldn't recommended it for gaming but its a good daily driver. Jellybean really makes it worth it....

I use CodeNameAndroid's ROM with the latest stable AIR kernel installed from CWM Recovery. Even just added the 4.2 Google Apps earlier and it runs great. SavagedZen/SIO combo seem to be the smoothest for me. I can get better battery life with different combos, but not worth it to deal with micro-delays in input for me. I'm a little :silly: I know.
I don't use my phone for gaming other than simple "phone style" games anyways, so no comment there.
Video playback, and music with screen off works great.
UI is super smooth and responsive.
I have it clocked to 200 Mhz to 1.2 Ghz and slightly undervolted. It is super stable.
It gets about 2-3 hours straight of screen on while browsing the net via Wi-Fi at home (someone in my family is always on it), but will last about 12 hours when used normally. I probably get 30 minutes to an hour of talk time a day, check my email every couple hours, use the navigation once or twice, and always have GPS, Data, and 4G on (Sprints 3G is slow here).
If I turn off all data and use it strictly as a phone while out and about it lasts a long time. Probably a day and a half.
Plus it has had countless ROM's flashed and is still kicking, sometimes dozens in a single night... LMAO. I recently did something so it doesn't transfer files over USB anymore though, trying to figure that out right now.

I have nothing but great experiences with my Nexus 1 a couple years back.
If this experience is as good as I think it would be, I might go back to a pure Android device, rather than an Android powered one!

Umm didn't you say you bought the at&t version? I'm new to the nexus s line but I thought the 4g sprint version ROMs only work for that phone.
Just make sure you flash the right version ROM/kernel for your phone.

I think the Note is a great tablet phone. If you had installed SlimBean on your Note you would have been happy. If you don't want to be disappointed with the Nexus S, I suggest SlimBean.

I went through several JB ROMs and kernels on my NS (Stock, CM10, Slim, Trinity, Matr1x) and finally settled on a combo of AOKP JB M1, Marmite 6.7.9 and smartassV2. I also disabled all frivolous animations and transitions. The phone is now a rocket!
I flashed the 4.2 Gapps and they all work fine too, except for Google Now, which can't seem to access my location service.
Don't play hard core games on this thing. It's good for the occasional Angry Birds or Fruit Ninja, but that's it.
It's a great phone and so is your decision to buy it based on community support!

Beautifully IMO. The ROMs being developed have given me full use of my phone and have actually kept me from spending the coin on upgrading again.

Just an FYI
I recently flashed BlackBean6.0 and Matr1x kernel and had lots of weird problems. I flashed to AIRr2 stable kernel and it still had a bunch of freezes and random restarts, now my device is softbricked
Stay away from that combo

The bottom line and MOST significant thing here is that nexus S is now easily the fastest single core android phone. Phones with 768MB ram will have an edge in gaming but with ICS or GB they are not going to have the same system wide speed.

Very true, most of my friends have dual core phones with giant screens and 1GB of RAM... They all compliment my phone a lot everytime someone ends up using it for anything. They can't even tell it has half (literally) of the horsepower in all areas. It still has one of the best looking screens by far also. I can't stand Motorola or HTC screens (haven't seen the newest HTC phones though) with that greyish polarization you get when you tilt it at all... Yuck.
And some say it's boring, but I love the all black, mostly unadorned look with the slight curve to it. The curve makes it nicer in my pocket on my face and in my hand. I don't want a perfect brick. I don't want any bigger either, 4" is perfect for me. I have big hands and can JUST barely use it with one hand. And I agree with Apple on ONE THING... I feel a mobile device that requires two hands for anything more than games IS STUPID.
I wish they made an NS4G with Nexus 4 or even Galaxy Nexus specs, and a rubberized back. I would snatch it up in a heartbeat.

JB 4.1.2 is working great on my i9020a! With CM10 and Marmite 7.1.2, it's a happy machine. I kind of want a Nexus 4, but with the huge demand and low stock, I'm still happy using my old Nexus S.
