I have a Samsung Captivate (running AT&T stock 2.3.5, unlocked) and am almost about to pull the trigger on the Skyrocket (late to the party.. I know). What am I getting into? I keep reading about ICS delays, unable to root, unlock etc. Is it worth it?
I thought about waiting for S3, but maybe not.
Go ahead, do your best, talk me out of the S2 Skyrocket..

Don't get the Skyrocket, your better off waiting for the S3 for sure, or the HTC One series, basically our phone, although a great one, sadly has little to nothing going for it anymore versus any new phones coming in the next few months, basically there's no point getting the Skyrocket anymore. Which one specifically from HTC? I love the Samsung screens. Have noticed that the HTC screens looked "washed out" - is that still the case?
Well it depends what carrier you're on, no one knows for sure which phones from the One series are gonna land on what carrier, but ATT will probably get the higher end One X, while Sprint might get the One S. Also I think the new HTC phones use Super LCD 2, so might not be that bad, worse than AMOLED tech for sure but probably fine tbh. Also I think the new Sony Xperia phones are coming out too, those might now have the craziest specs but they're really nicely designed and are gonna have some of the better cameras to be on phones this year For those you'll want thr Xperia Ion, look it up it's a beautiful device ^^
I have had my Skyrocket for about a month and love it. I rooted it and removed a bunch of the AT&T and Samsung stuff, but it is otherwise stock.
I came from the Dell Streak/Venue family of phones. They worked very well but the Streak was too big (5 inch screen) for everyday use and the 4 inch screen of the Dell Venue was just too small. The 4.5 inch screen of the Skyrocket is just right for my needs.
The Skyrocket is very snappy and unless I have a heavy use day the battery lasts all days for me (12-14 hours). Today has been light use, almost none really, and the battery is at 73% after 13 hours. Most days I am in the 25-30% range after 18 hours.
I use Launcher Pro as my home launcher and am not big on widgets that update. I do not use twitter or facebook, but do have 3 push email accounts that I use K-9 for. My biggest non-phone uses are as an e-reader (Kindle, Nook) and as an mp3 player (usually wired directly to the vehicle radio*).
I use the GPS 4 or 5 times a week to check traffic with Google maps or look for alternate routes due to an accident. The gps locks fast and I have had zero issues with it.
Right now a refurbished Skyrocket is $20 with a new contract at the at&t web site. This is what I paid for mine.
* For the connection to the vehicle radio I use a Scosche cable. It includes a mic and makes the phone hands free.

Good suggestions ideas and experiences already posted, I thought I'd share how my wife now enjoys her new Samsung Galaxy Note. It is HUGE. Too big for me to carry in my pocket so I'm stickin' with my skyrocket. She has a purse instead of a pocket, and her eyes are even worse than my own so a bigger screen was a no brainer. It's a nice phone, that note, it sure is. Nice big screen, seriously.
This skyrocket I use is pretty darn good, suits all my needs. I rooted it with no problem, and I flashed a version of cyanogenmod on it, and it's flawless. Cyanowiz it's called here in the forums for skyrocket. It eliminates all the AT&T carrier IQ, so I can turn on the wifi hotspot and let my friend at work use it, as his Sprint service and signal is sub-par, and it makes his iphone 4 go faster. Downside of showing off like that is it blows the lid off my tiered data plan.
(no ICS yet, heard it was buggy anyway)
I'm not sure how much better a device can get, I hear rumors of an Iphone 5 and mentioned by you is a S3? Cool! Perhaps hanging in there with the captivate a bit longer will yield an even faster more modern device.
I'll just say the difference between the skyrocket and the captivate is a dual core processor and yes it's faster, but if we're talkin' out of pocket expense as something to consider, it pays to stay a tad out of date and content with what you already have! If you're eligible for upgrade, you're also eligible to kick AT&T to the curb with no extra cost and consider other carriers. I'd talk to neighbors and friends about the performance of Verizon etc, instead of automatically just starting a new 2 year contract with AT&T, check all your options.

Don't worry to much about what others want or think. If you wait for the S3 which I admit will be awesome....how long till it is obsolete or "old" about 3 months. then everyone will want the "samsung/htc/??? Universe infinity blackhole 7" that is all the time you really have being the latest and greatest.
I love the skyrocket and I'm sure i'd love the S3 or note or any "current" phone. You get what you want, but hey if your buying I'll take a Note, not sure why though lol, XDA is a great place to look around and see the communities before you choose.
Skyrocket isn't worth it anymore, get the note.

Yes.. I am looking at $20 for the refurb. Hopefully refurb means somebody just returned it because it was too much power in their hands rather than beat the crap out of the phone and send it back...
Will probably stick to At&T due to GSM (I travel internationally once every few months). Will probably get the phone unlocked a few weeks after getting it.

March / April are the worst months for buying laptops, desktops and phones.
It's the end of the quarter and all the new stuff is about to come out and all the old stuff is already almost a year old.
Why do you want to pay regular price for old hardware? That's like buying a blackberry.

I've been without a phone for about 3 months now. My Curve 8320 was very dear to me, and I happened to buy it before a smartphone data plan was required on that device. The phone unfortunately will not hold a charge (I've tried multiple batteries) and only turns on--without the radio signal, mind you--when plugged in.
I have been frequenting engadget for weeks and weeks doing research on which smartphone should be my next. Do you have any opinions on which Android device is the best that AT&T has to offer? I've discounted the Inspire, I don't really want it, and the Atrix 4G looks pricey and I've heard bad things about MotoBlur. So far I've been looking at the Captivate, Infuse, and the ever so mysterious SGS2.
Which AT&T device should I choose, or will the Galaxy S2 be out soon enough to warrant a wait?
PS. I'll only be getting a 200MB data plan, but I'm on WiFi 90% of the time.
I use the Nexus One and with Gingerbread on it it runs very nice.
Unfortunately I have to get a subsidized phone on contract, or else I would have already gotten a phone.
If you can live without custom roms (and even that may be possible soon), I would highly recommend the Atrix. You can put an alternative launcher from the market on it and not have to deal with motoblur at all.
I'm using mine on a 200mb/month plan as well, without issues. As long as you dont do something stupid like stream video/audio over your data plan, you should be fine if your around wifi a lot.
So if I get an Atrix for $150 from Amazon that would probably be a more worthwhile investment than a Captivate or an Infuse? Also, would it be wise to wait until the 24th to see if the SGS2 is announced, or does the vast majority believe it'll be a Galaxy Tab announcement/something else?

Wow, that's one monster of a phone. Sense isn't my favorite, and the 4.5 inch screen is a bit too big (see: Infuse), but it looks really promising. I wish AT&T would cool it with the borderline tablet sized displays. 4-4.3 is a better size, imo.
I have a dell streak ( 5 inch screen ) and absolutely love the screen estate.
I am trying to move to another phone becoz the development is kind of stagnant but just cant find anything that would give me the same screen as streak.
5 inch screen does look big but with a few days of use , u wont want to leave it .
So i guess my next phone would be htc holiday but really wish many developers going for it .

Yeah, motoblur is not the best thing ever, but the hardware is worth it. Plus Motorola wants to open the bootloader for custom roms, and AT&T seems like they would give them the Go-Ahead to do so given their new "we love android" status.

I'd agree, wait. Once the SGS II is on the market, read some reviews of it and if you can check one out in person (and the other phones mentioned as well for comparison purposes). Then make a decision.
Nexus S
Once I got over the subsidy "free free" thing and went with an unlocked Nexus S on ATT, things just "worked".
Took only a few seconds to pull the SIM from my old phone and shove it into the new. The i9020A instantly signed into the ATT network, also locked on to the 3G data just fine.
It's the size and shape of a regular phone, fits my hand, fits my pocket.
Sparse is a word I would use for the apps installed.. but thats a good thing.. the only apps on it now are the apps I want on it.. its clean.
I know its a dev phone, but "really" do all the other phones "add" anything to the reference? Most seem to remove, block, break, reduce and charge you extra for everything.. that's not what I'd call a bargain.
And I've yet to see a "full featured" phone app from one of the big three I actually wanted to "pay for" with the 2 year contract.
The Samsung event on 5/24/11 has been postponed..... An Atrix is slowly looking like my new phone. I may wait a week or so before I set a decision in stone though.
Anyone have anything to say about the Atrix before I buy one, root it, and pop GingerBlur on it? It's either that or wait for the white AT&T Nexus S if it is coming out any time soon. Seems like it would be the perfect time.

I know it has a better camera and a larger screen, but reviews say that the screen PPI is less than the Captivate and the processor isn't dual core. Just 200mhz faster. So I'm at a crossroads... Keep my Cappy or upgrade?
I personally think it is a great device. i can say one of the best i have own. People make such a big fuzz about screens i honestly done get it. it doenst have one of those cheap phone screens, so im set. i can read my text, videos look good. so im good. its a phone not a computer.
its good phone, it works and functions as it should. so im content. this is my first samsung phone. and im happy. its a great little big device
My first android and im in love. I would recommend the infuse. Unless if ur in the battle between the infuse and sgsII. I still love my infuse though.

I'd say totally worth it, had a captivate running gingerbread and loved it but this blows it away, far better screen, camera(also front facing), gps rocks, love downloading movies from pirate bay straight from my phone and watching them on the big screen with an hdmi. It's really fast, great roms so far and it'll get gb roms really soon... I bought mine for 200 and right now it's only 50 at target! The only downside is the sgs2 will be released next month... Either way both are huge upgrades from the already awesome captivate!

I have the inspire and the infuse, and i really like the infuse better. Its a very snappy phone. The battery life is way better on the infuse, its lighter and the screen is better than the inspire. Now with that said, compared to the Craptivate which was my first android phone the infuse is 100 times better. I have a feeling when we get gingerbread its going to be a great device.

I don't think it's worth it, the specs aren't all that different. (400mhz bump in clock speed, slightly better camera, slightly better screen). I'd wait till August for the S2 at the very least.
I mean, I do love my Infuse.. But let's be realistic.

It all depends, if the main thing you do with the phone is talk and play a couple songs then its not worth it.
But if you do a lot of other stuff with the phone and have an extra $200 bucks to shell out like I did, you can buy a new or near new one on eBay for under $450 and you can sell your captivate for at least $225 if its in good shape and complete. So its not as if you were to shell out $450.
I sold my Captivate for $250 on eBay in less than 2 days about 3 weeks ago.
There is a big difference between Captivate and Infuse.
Since I take a lot of pictures the main thing which comes to mind is the fact that the Infuse has a LED flash, the flash is nothing like a professional strobe BUT without the LED flash, as I am certain you know by now that you can forget about taking decent pictures indoors or outdoors at night.
With the LED flash I get very decent pictures anywhere and anytime as long as the subject(s) is not much further than 7 feet or so from where I stand.
Plus the Infuse also has a front facing camera which is great for video chat using wifi and or 3G. Not to forget that the camera is much better being its 8Megapixels.
And yes the Infuse is not double the speed of the Captivate, but the 20% increase which it does have is nothing to sneeze at either. It is noticably faster. The speed difference is most noticable when playing action games and when you surf the web.
Perhaps 4G is in your future? if it is, the Infuse has that too.
Plus you can record and watch 720p videos then connect the phone to big screen tv using the mini hdmi adaptor which comes with the phone.
All in all its well worth the couple hundred bucks difference.
If you do plan to buy one, I would suggest you do it as soon as you can because the longer you wait the less money you will be able to sell the Captivate for on eBay or anywhere else.
I wanted to write about the big 4.5 inch SCREEN last, that in my mind is such a huge difference that if everything else was the same on both phones and the only difference was the screen size I would have still purchased the Infuse..
A half inch does not sound like much at all, but when you consider something so small to start with as a 4 inch screen and then you add a half inch to that, it makes the Infuse screen approx 20% larger.
Not only is the screen larger, but it uses a much newer Super Amoled Plus screen technology which really rivals the iPhone screen as far as resolution goes, its way better than the Captivate. Infuse is much better on the eyes for people who spend a lot of time using all the features of the phone.
Well thats about it........... That's my review and comparison between Captivate and the Infuse phones.

I also upgraded from the Cappy, And I'm completely lovin' the Infuse. Even tho the SGSII is releasing, I'm probably gonna stick to this bad boy. (Maybe). But still Cappy or Infuse both are great phones, Infuse just knocks the captivate out with more upgraded features. Its like BumbleBee in transformers, The old Camaro, the to the new camaro.

BestBuy definately matches. Just bought one a few hours ago. Had them price check on the web and even told them Target wasnt getting them until tomorrow. All depends on the rep. Manager signed off on the 50 Target price match no problem.

They price matched for me too. Go back get a different rep and adk for a.price match. Stop by target and pick up there ad. That should seal the deal.

I have had or used several phones lately:
BlackBerry (Sets the Standard, but I don't see BB keeping up with the trend)
HTC Tilt 2 (The best speakers),
Moto Razor (Still going strong after 5 years) Wife loves it
Samsung Blackjack 3 (wore the paint off the keyboard)
Moto Atrix (Fast phone and very nice)
HTC Inspire (just keeps getting better)
Infuse (The best screen out there)
My favorite of all is the Infuse, except it doesn't make Chai Latte' with a dash of cinnamon and nutmeg.
There are hundreds of phones out there to choose from for hundreds of different needs, likes and dislikes.
There are a lot of critics over cell phones, but any of the top brands and top models are going to be just right for someone. Manufactures are cranking out new models faster than the first recharge. The Infuse I have is an engineering marvel. You just can't beat Samsung, HTC, Motorola, Palm, BB, LG, Nokia, Apple, etc.
I still have an old Qualcomm from around 1995. I keep it as a reminder of how far phones have come in just a few years.
The Infuse is a top-of-the-line SmartPhone. The only complaint I have about it is: No External LED notification lights.
The hottest phone I'm hearing about and reading about is the Samsung Galaxy S II 4G

nothing wrong with the ol cappy, nor the infuse. hell verizon customers need to make a choice, tegra2 or lte. all the lte phones have single core 1ghz processors. all the dual core phones are 3g. they had to either drop or delay the bionic due to heat issues. instead they released a 3g droid x2 with the tegra chipset.
id rather have a nice thin samsung than all that stuff they have on verizon, and i can do without the sgs2 for now. ill get next years varient though im sure. i cant keep a phone for 2 years anymore. i have an obsession.

At least I know I'm not alone anymore
For some reason I always feel the need to upgrade my phone every 6mo or so. Right now have the iPhone so it makes it easier to stay with 1 phone for a full year. Android moves so quick that I'm always trying to find that perfect phone that does everything imaginable for me.
I sell mobile phones for a living and every time I unbox an Infuse and fire it up I'm blown away. I prefer Samsung phones, had the Vibrant and Nexus S. Currently I have a G2x and I couldn't be more disappointed. I'm so close to switching over to the Infuse....

The Infuse is my first Android. I switched over from an iPhone 3G. And oh my goodness what an upgrade it was. I can never go back to an iPhone with it's baby-sized screen. The Infuse is one of my best purchases ever and I have not looked back since. I thought I could never live without my iPhone. Then came my Infuse and 2 days later, I sold my iPhone with no regrets at all. Go with the Infuse. It is amazing. And Netflix just released for it, making it even sweeter.

I sell Verizon phones for a living because I fell in love with Samsung's Galaxy Indulge.
A lot of people, including most of my co-workers, hate on Samsung. Why?...cause they're retarded. Motorola phones are boring and HTC's screen are kinda bland and I (for some reason) have trouble remembering how to get around in one when it comes time to help a customer with a problem. (the Incredible 2 is kinda nice though...aaand the Droid 3 is pretty good)
Now I had Launcher Pro and every which ROM from Sunday on my Charge. I thought I was an AOSP guy to the core...until this afternoon.
Last night I fried my SIM card. I don't know how, but I did it...and I'm proud Data Hog 4-LIFE!!! Anyway, I'm an indirect rep and I had to bring it to a corporate store to get a new SIM, so to be safe I flashed back to stock ED1 so they couldn't ask any questions.
I gotta say, I can't believe how much I missed TW. It's really not as bad as I remembered. AOSP is pretty bleak looking. The colors of the Charge are AWESOME and TW really helps show them in their full glory. I also like the sound quality and functionality of the stock music player, AS WELL AS (now call me crazy) the Samsung keyboard. It's easier for me to find things quicker with a horizontal scrolling app drawer too.
I really don't see myself buying any other manufacturer's phone in the future.
When people come in with some issue with the Fascinate I end up staying with them for an extra 15 mins cause I can't stop playing with the damn thing...all the while repeating, "Look at this screen. This is some gorgeous screen." And they end up walking out feeling even better about their purchase.
Unless some miracle happens I don't see myself flashing any more ROMs onto my Charge until someone builds a fully function TW4 ROM on the future OTA Gingerbread update.
I think a true hardcore phone phreak is the one that rock straight stock baby. Or mostly stock. I might get some root and kernal action going, but NO non-Samsung launchers from now on.
there is a lot to like about samsung phones...but....in general you have to deal with major software issues and lack of support from the oem and carrier with them
as stock phones (this is pre sgs2 which now rectifies it) they are rfs and imo laggy/buggy/and out of date software wise
the processors and screens are great...that are the major selling points of it
i fully plan on getting an sgs2 (which is no longer rfs) as long as its lte
that being said, having gone back to htc for awhile im blown away with how smooth a stock can be, without having to root and run kernels just to get it the way it should be
i have no loyalty to any brand though
i kinda am now too, but not by actually looking to buy samsung devices and not because i'm half korean .
i got the og galaxy tab b/c i found it fit my needs better than my nook color did. sold the nc and rebought the gt.
next was 10.1 in tablets, i tried the xoom, transfomer and the gt10.1. i went the gt10.1 b/c it had the best quality of all the devices. the others had their pluses and minuses but i settled with the samsung device.
the phone, i've pretty much been an htc fan since that's about all you can get on sprint. since i loved the evo 4g i was originally gonna get the tb, but after research and seeing how bad the battery is on the tb i went for the charge and i'm completely happy.
now i'm waiting on seeing what i do with my sprint upgrade, do i quit sprint ($50/mo 450min and unlimited data - thanks SERO!), or go with another htc phone or wait for the photon or gs2? i had the evo 3d for a while but sent it back. it was no fault of the phone, i really loved it, but sprint's data has been getting bad for over a month. they fixed everything the day after i took the phone back, lol.
my mom's tv is a samsung - she actually prefers to buy korean though, my wife's brd player is samsung, my monitors are samsung...
I had a bad experience with Samsung when I had the Epic 4g. My GPS woudln't lock to anything closer to 30 meters/98.4 feet. It got Froyo 8 months after it came out with promises that it'd come out alot sooner. That's why my username is Samsuck, but do you want to know what made me come back?
The screen man, it's like crack. Especially now with Netflix. I had a Thunderbolt and if you live in Texas and step outside, you're not going to see a damn thing on that crappy screen.
Sure, this phone doesn't have as much ram but I can sacrifice that.
It all started back when i was a little kid. There was nothing better than a Sony CRT TV. All other tvs looked awfully disappointing to me. Trinitron was an amazing technology. Now i don't remember how or why but when it came time for me to get my own tv in my room i was bought a Samsung and to my surprise it looked great. I was a little quality Nazi back then and i loved it...so much that i figured Sony licensed Trinitron out to them. The only thing a Sony tv had on it was better detail in the blacks.
My first HDTV was a 5 million lb CRT by Samsung and nothing to this day looks better. I don't have it anymore. Now I'm stuck with a Sony Bravia and it's awful. When i look at tvs at the store i wind up liking Samsung the best without even looking at the names.
I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to lag. Stuttering not so much. I was playing with an expiria play and was marveling on how smooth it was...until i got to the app drawer admit started to stutter.
Overall it comes down to functionality and ease of navigation and from day-one with the Galaxy Indulge I was never really stumped on how to do something.
It's a shame that they're not as quick to send updates but for us I don't see that as problem cause we can update ourselves if we see fit.

The screen alone was enough to make me buy only Samsung phones from now on.
Went from an iPhone 4 to Skyrocket and still on my 30-day window. With the news that FCC has approved the release of Galaxy Note this week, I am now torn. I'm loving my SR with ICS ROM very much but still drooling over that 1280x800 AMOLED display. Can anyone give me some advice on what's the best option given my 1 week window to make that decision of sticking with this phone or returning it for the upcoming Note? Is selling this on ebay and buying an unlocked Note a viable option?
Off topic but how do you feel about the switch from iphone to skyrocket? I had the original and then 3gs until picking up this phone 2 weeks ago and I'm not completely sold on it still and debating about switching to the iphone 4s

I personally would only make the switch if the Note had LTE. I'd also make sure that holding a 5.3" screen isn't going to feel awkward in my hands after prolonged use. The skyrocket already makes my hand go numb when holding it at a certain angle reading the news in bed every morning.
I'm in the same boat with both of you. I just switched from the iphone 3g to the skyrocket. It's only been 3 days, but the transition has been difficult. The iphone is so very easy to use, but the SR has so many features. I feel like the skyrocket is my device, where the iphone feels like it's Steve Jobs' device and he lets me use it.
I actually upgraded to the 4s before picking up the SR. I wasn't really impressed. The 4s did not seem that much faster than my 3g, and I thought Siri was a bit gimicky. I guess going from the 3g to the 4s just felt like...meh. It wasn't exciting at all.
My only gripe with the SR so far is the display. It has everything going for it except a 720p display. That would have been OK 6-12 months ago, but now it makes a difference. LTE is what kept me from keeping the iphone. The display on the SR may keep me from keeping it, too.
If we get some sort of confirmation that the Note (with LTE) will come to ATT in the next two months, I'll probably trade my SR in.
I'm 95% certain that it will have LTE and given how LTE eats up the battery, i dont think it will be a deal breaker for me. Hspa+ is more than enough and gives me a day's worth.

Not going back to any iphone. These new androids are in a diff league.
The NOTE with LTE is a game changer.....in my opinion if the Note hits sooner than later no phone can compete. but it has a certain audience - i hope this happens SOON
Quad core Samsung phone changes all the rules.
finally able to play with the Note for a few hours and my hands are just not big enough for even simple 1 hand operation, especially when reaching for links/buttons on the top right corners (i'm a lefty) so I'll just keep my Skyrocket. Right now, even the Nexus is not an option because of it's lack of expansion slot.
The Note might be good for me.. I have big hands .. with me being 6ft and 280lbs it will look just right!

Its not a ONE Handed phone by any means. its a small tablet.
me being 6"1 and in the same boat where i can operate the Skyrocket and reach every corner with just my thumb. i DONT expect to be able to do with that with the Note. but i still dont mind.

Not on Skyrocket but wanted to comment on the switch to android as I came recently from a 3gs (went to GS2). For me the deal breaker was whether I could successfully two way sync with our iCloud claendars. A friend let me play with a Razr and once I confirmed that that wasn't going to be an issue, I got down to playing with Android.
Once I put a custom rom on my phone and got rid of the AT&T bloatware I'm amazed at what android and Samsung can do. You made the right choice going with Samsung, the devs in the skyrocket area are working hard.
If you find yourself thinking about going back to Apple because of the size of the Skyrocket, maybe look at the slightly smaller screen GS2.
Honestly, if Apple had come out witha 4" screen with the 4S I'm sure I would have gone there automatically. I'm glad they didn't because it's given me a chance to really appreciate what Android can do.
Just my 2 cents.
I'm kind of tempted with the Note
I had the Streak with a 5" screen and it was too big. I enjoyed the large screen, but when you had to actually operate it daily, it became a nuisance. The Note...no way. Not even a thought in my mind.

That is true.. would be like trying to "palm" a basketball..
I came from a Dell Streak and I loved that device. Unfortunately I dropped it and broke my screen 2 weeks ago. Tried repairing it, broke a delicate clamp inside and well, now I have a white Skyrocket.
Buddy of mine that works at AT&T corporate said the note will be out next quarter. If it was any sooner I would have prolly just waited. He didn't mention if it was going to be LTE though.

I came from the Iphone 4 and I absolutely love my Skyrocket. I wouldn't change back if someone paid me. The iphone is so boring.
Anyway I am awaiting the day the Note comes out, I will be trading my phone and throwing in cash for a Note. Thank goodness for craigslist. I might have to wait awhile but it will be worth the wait.
I don't care how big the screen is. I Can't wait to get my hands on that thing.

I bit the bullet and sold my Skyrocket for a Note with US Warranty. All in all, I paid about $150 extra which I think justifies the upgrade. The screen is huge but 1280x800, especially if you connect it to a TV is just filthy. I'm not near any LTE area anyway (and probably not for the next 6 months) so that is not a factor. I hope the popular ROMS here can be rebuilt for the Note, particularly the Rocket Sandwich.
So I have a contract that's up for renewal (I'm sticking with The Beast, I go to rural Louisiana enough to justify the $$ in exchange for the service) and I was thinking about picking up an S4 and unloading my 3 on ebay, it would more or less cover the cost. But then I got to thinking - I run AOKP and love it to death because there's no useless bells and whistles that I don't use and just add bloat and overhead, and I'd do the same on a 4...which makes virtually all the selling points of it (the eye tracking, touchfree, fast camera) moot for me. Sure, the Snapdragon 600 is faster and the screen *is* a lot nicer, but AOKP is already silky-smooth on the S3 and the screen is more than adequate for me, but at the end of the day there's nowhere near the level of improvement I saw coming from a Droid X2 to the S3.
So, just asking for thoughts here, would you bother with the upgrade, that would be free or at worse >$50 but still involve hacking up a new phone and getting everything just right all over again, or skip this generation and wait for the next crop of gear?
If you run an non-TW ROM, all great new features from Samsung won't work so why bother?

Does the S4 even have the bootloader unlocked? That would be an important consideration if you want to run AOKP.
im not upgrading for the exact reasons you just described and as i last haerd they were having issues unlocking the S4 on vzw.
waiting for something really worthwhile.

I'm on the same boat. I have two upgrades with Verizon. The S4 doesn't convinced me. I might take the Moto X for a test drive.
If I were you, I would sell your S3, buy an S4 with your upgrade at Verizon. DON"T open the box (aka buy it through newegg or amazon instead of going to the store where they set it up for you). Then sell the S4 on ebay as New. Take all that money and buy a S4 developer addition. Will solve the bootloader problem because it looks there is a chance that this one will never get unlocked. Or atleast it isn't worth the risk in my opinion. I enjoy the features of being both rooted and unlocked too much to not have them.
If you are worried about not having a phone while all the selling is occurring, I would buy the S4 developer addition on a credit card to avoid actually paying for it for 30ish days. Then start selling and you should probably have your money in time if you play your cards right.
I completely agree with drewmey. To date, only root has been achieved on the Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4, so unless you plan on sticking with stock Touchwiz UX for a while, the Developer Edition S4 is your best bet. OR you could just stick with your S3 for now (seeing as how we already have root and our bootloader unlocked) until the Nexus 5 (one can dream), the Samsung Galaxy S5, or whatever other upcoming phone tickles your fancy.

I don't think it is much of an upgrade to go with an S4. To me the specs aren't much better. It was kind of a waste that they even put it out. It's just something to fill the gap before something good IMO

Sorry, haven't been on here in ages and wasn't sure where to put this.
Thanks for all the feedback...I would be optimistic about it eventually being unlocked again but the carriers are getting nastier about it. I have a family plan with an "extra" line that upgrades the opposite year as my line, so I don't need to hold out for new hardware; I'd be good in time for the S5 by May or whenever but not for the Nexus 5. Or the Moto X.
Or maybe just get a brand-spanking-new S3 with a Lifeproof or OB Armor case (I'm a compulsive runner, rain snow sleet or hail) and a few hundred bucks in my pocket and sit tight for a couple of more generations...hmmmmmmm..
