Ok, I know the official build isnt out yet, but I do know there are a slew of ROMs floating around, some of them on XDA. Any suggestions as to which one to go with? Any pros/cons of doing this? Just trying to find out, cause I saw the post on Engadget that linked to a closed thread here about the Froyo leak, and whatnot, so what ROM should I go with, or just wait a little for the official one to come out? And what abut Gingerbread? Should I even bother with Froyo?
Sorry, just got a lot of questions now that I've got my Captivate
Thanks guys
The official build is out for Bell Canada, I would try to get a ROM based on that.
Definitely a custom rom. The leak is really buggy
i agree with wvumaniac79. been running the leaked froyo and been troubleshooting it on a nearly daily basis (thank god for this forum!). some things i havent been able to solve and just lived with (still nervous about flashing, etc). but my patience is wearing thin to the point it'll overthrow my nervousness of re-flashing a new rom.
do a custom rom and you'll be happy.
Thanks for the info guys.
@vieve - I dont think you can flash a ROM for Canadian phones on an American phone can you? I know I couldnt with my old HTC TP2.
Anyone got any suggestions as to what Rom to use? Afaik, isnt Cognition the most popular one right now? Any bad things with flashing?
If I'm not mistaken the new perception rom is based off a build from Canada. Its made by design gears the same that does cognition. The newest cognition is awesome that's what I'm running on right now. Just test the waters and if you get stuck the forum is here for support.

Ok so perception and cognition are by same dev teams, so either one is a good one to do? Im assuming because theyre names are different that there are some differences between them? I was looking at cognition but ill give the other a look. Thanks

The cognition b4 was perfect for me. I didn't have any problems.
My personal favorite is the aosp cm6 spices rom, gives the look and feel of stock android. But cognition is good too
Alrighty, well Im gonna try Cognition real quick, and see how it runs... if all else fails, or something goes wrong with the phone, i can always flash back to stock eclair right?
Correct. I have though I bricked my phone a few times, but I always figure it out. This is my last ditch effort that always works for me every time If I think i bricked my phone.
Download Odin 1 click. Install samsung drivers, if you haven't already. Take the battery, sim card, and sd card out of your phone. Start Odin 1 click on your computer. plug the usb cable into the computer, but not the phone. Put the battery back into the phone. Hold the volume up and down buttons in. While holding those buttons, plug the usb cable into your phone. Your phone should turn on in download mode and be recognized by odin without even touching the power button on your phone. Then you can restore.
You probably won't need that advice, but if something goes wrong, I though I would save you a mini-panick.
The newest cognition 2.3b1-6 is running on captivate builds. Cog 2.4 is based off a vibrant build. Perception is based off i9000 builds. 2.4 was buggy for some but worked great for others. Perception is practically brand new only been around for a couple of days and doesn't quite work flawlessly YET. Hope this helps.

I agree. The most stable cog I used was 2.3b4. I never used b5 or 5.5. b4 was rock solid. b6 is faster, but has issues.
I got Cog b6 (latest one atm) running right now, and it seems to be running just fine.. I think my only issue is battery calibration, which Im in the process of fixing right now..
have to say, i like froyo a lot better then eclair, and not having touchwiz is soooooooo nice
currently running cogb6 and everything has been flawless so far. surprisingly, I haven't run into a single problem yet. also, flashing it w/ rom manager was dead easy
Yeah, i was pretty amazed at how easy it was and even more amazed at how much better it runs than the stock rom. About the only issue i have is the random shut off issue, which seems to be hardware related since it happened on stock eclair and on cogb6. A quick power on, restart and it works fine.
I really like cog. Runs great. Two complaints i have though. The musix player app that comes with stock eclair has a pull down control on the lock screen while the one in cog doesnt, even though they look like the same app. That and using the music shortcut in the Car Home app doesnt work (im guessing that the stock music app isnt installed?). Two minor grumbles, but something i can live with. Have to say its really really really really really nice to have gotten rid of touchshiz and atts bloatware. Touchwiz looks nice and all but damn, i love the stock android launcher and lock screen. That stupid swipe to unlock screen was killing me.
Ah well, im ranting. Regardless, this rom is great. Thanks for the input guys. Its greatly appreciated.
And yes, i did just type all this from my phone. :-D

Cog 2.3b6 is good...
Perception build 4 is good... fast has a better modem for it...
both done by DG both good... best thing todo is flash till you find one you like and fits what you want it to do.. other than that have fun with whatever rom you choose and enjoy it

I believe the reason that pulldown CD on the lockscreen for the music player doesn't work bc its part of touchwiz. No touchwiz no nifty CD animation. As far as car home goes I'm not sure.

U can get the pull down CD on cognition 2.3b6 along with the puzzle piece notifications. They aren't in there now because the dev went back to the stock aosp lock screen instead of the touchwiz (aka "glass") lock screen. You just have to replace the android.policy.jar file in /system/framework/ with root explorer or some other method. U can get the file from an older cognition rom that had it or the stock rom.
Axura is a blazing fast totally tricked out rom. Ran cog and perception and both good but try Axura and you'll see what I mean.

I had read all the post, and tried all those method. But it seems didn't help.
After updating to official GB, the touchscreen turns intolerably unresponsive. I used to use my tips to unlock the pattern but now I have to press harder. Further more, when I use swype, a lot of times it would lost the touch in the middle of a word.
I read others and find the similar problem, has anyone be able to fix it?
I really like gingerbread, for I no longer need to put the task killer in my default screen, and the status bar is much better.
Thanks

now.

It seems that a lot of people is talking about the issue now. I'm just wondering if it's the problem of my phone or the rom.

I'd you're on official Zeus then I do believe that it is the rom. Havent had a touchwcreen problem with my phone and I never went to official gb. Try Zeus. It won't take that long... you will be happy. Promise. Battery is fantastic. I doubt that Samsung made a better rom...

The Canadian GB version (ROGERS) doesn't seem to have any sort of touchscreen problem. Was the AT&T update recent? Maybe they messed something up (after taking how long to release it?)

the Canadian version downgrades video recording and doesn't HDMI.
Might as well as flash one the uclk2 based rom here. It'll still be a step up.
Really, imo, Victory, Numas, Zeus are at the pinnacle of what gb as to offer.
If you want hdmi, run Victory, and still retain root.
I haven't tried official gb and I haven't noticed any touchscreen issues

I was on stock UCKL2. I also feel issue of screen unresponsive many times. Specially after ending a phone call.
Yesterday i just flashed the Heimdall One-Click Return to Stock UCLB3. Phone seems more smooth now.
Thanks
Nits
B3 is a better leak. Try some of the B3 roms are now available. You will see and feel the difference

R3VOLUTION is also a very good ROM.
I used to use Serendipity, and was too lazy to change, but after installing R3VOLUTION my phone feels like it's a new device. Its performance has improved markedly.
just installed Zeus and found camera not working. Icons were auto rearranging and overlapping so I cleared/reset and reinstalled. Icons seem to be behaving now. but Camera still wont start. system cannot find the camera. tried using a camera from market but still no luck.

Sounds like an issue with your kernel. Try a kernel reflash The kernel handles low-level hardware.
I'm assuming the camera wasn't listed as a bug in the Zeus thread? Try to include a few specifics like what phone you're running also
Good luck!
zeus 6 on Samsung Infuse, it flashes the infusion kernal as part of its intstall. I did not see it listed as an issue but there are over 500 pages to that thread. can someone recommend a better kernal. I tried a camera from the market but no help.

I always kept the kernel stock on.my Infuse, I found the best battery life that way. YMMV of course

Hi all.
I am trying to figure out why when I start a Google hangout, my wife's Infuse refuses to use the front facing camera, it defaults to the rear camera. Everything else works, but would like it to have the ffc as the default.
It doesn't even give me a choice to flip to which camera to use during the hangout.
It is a rooted + unlocked Infuse ATT, using the stock froyo 2.2.1 rom.
Thanks
Heeter

i dont think froyo has the camera framework for front facing video outside the camera program. the first version of android to support that was gingerbread because of its launch device, the nexus s. you should upgrade to gingerbread and try again. though to have it in a google hang out, you might even need ics or higher. im not sure.
Thanks for that response,
I was kind of figuring that I will have to upgrade the ROM for it to work.
I was kind of hoping that I could avoid it.
Thanks again,
Heeter
So I just started having problems with liquids camera on his new build. Flashed Newts camera patch and now it works! Sense to AOSP ?? Strange huh? Here it is

I am kind of afraid to try it out, liquids ICS rom is the first rom I had that the flash actually works correctly, even if its slightly grainy...but I suppose thats what nandroids are for eh.
And for anyone wondering my current thunderbolt is a Asurion replacement, everything worked perfectly except for the camera flash( flash goes off then camera snaps the picture) and since I use the camera so rarely I didn't want to risk getting another replacement that might have some other problem I couldn't live with, you know the Asurion circle of death.

It won't hurt it. Mine kept closing all the time. Flashed the patch in recovery and works perfectly.
