Is battery calibration needed?
And why?
Do you have to do it every flash?
And what is the best procedure in doing so?
Your answers are appreciated!

I honeslty can't say if it is needed but I believe it helps me out, I flash let it die down (normally quick), then after a full night of charging I calibrate. I've noticed before when I go out and need my phone for stability I will do a nandroid and my phone will seem to die a lot faster then usual with almost no use except for phone calls and texts. So that leads me to believe that it does help out, I use battery calibration from the play store.
I believe it just reflects your readings more accurately than not calibrating correctly. It doesn't really affect the output of your battery one way or the other.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
It's not necessary. A Google Engineer confirmed that it does not increase battery life or have any benefit. It just clears the logs that "battery info" (in settings) reads from

Yes. Same everything. Tried calibrating battery. Everything that drains is off. Is it a faulty unit?

There its always a chance
If your phone last 8-10 hrs then no you can improve by playing around. If it last like 5 hrs and you have calibrated and have gone through a couple bat cycles then maybe there is an issue.
Chances are, you need to play around

My battery life sucks I can barely make it through the school day without my batter dieing. So anyone got any suggestions that I could do to get better battery life?

Shut it off. Your at school.
If your flashing roms just make sure you charge to 100 percent and clear battery stats in recovery/advanced.

uh what. stop being an asshole. you didn't help with anything.
OP, battery life depends on a lot of things. Go to settings>phone info>battery usage and it might give you an idea of what is using your battery. Maybe you just need to turn down the brightness on the display, or turn off some things like Bluetooth or GPS.
Wiping battery stats will simply delete a file that caches some things about the battery. Sometimes when flashing different roms and themes the stats can get messed up and they need to be wiped.

We're going to need more information than that to help you out.
ROM?
Kernel?
Name of "Battery Monitoring" App?
Current Data use?
Signal strength in your area?
All of these will be very helpful in figuring out what your issue is.
Try to be patient, I'm a little new. But here's what I know.
Froyo 2.2
Kernel 2.6.32.9
Battery Monitor Widget App
Data usage isn't high.
I don't know how to find ROM
My display takes 93% but my brightness is all the way down and my signal is always pretty strong.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
Im guessing your one the stock at&t froyo. Think about going into the captivate android development section and flash a custom rom. They seem to provide better battery life and are much better than what came with this phone.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA Premium App
You can also disable wifi, bluetooth, and GPS when not in use - that should help.
In my experience the fastest way to better battery life is flash a new kernel. speedmod-kernel-i897-k13e is very stable. Also turn off auto-rotate and auto brightness.
A big battery killer for me is background data and auto sync, I leave it all off, along with the stuff every one else said.
Also, try calibrating your battery.
The only thing I've done to my phone is root. And I've turned off all the auto stuff, I have no idea how to "flash the rom" or anything else.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA Premium App
If your display takes up 93% of battery that's usually a good sign, it means that there's probably nothing in the background sucking up all the juice. Have you tried "bump charging" or replacing the battery? They do tend to go bad or lose calibration if you've overheated them one too many times.
Whenever I charge my phone it seems to get extremely hot. The battery app said like 115° to 120°

Try Juice Defender in the Android Market, made a big different for me.
In my experience Froyo roms have all been garbage battery life *first leak, stock, Perception, Cognition, SuperNova, Phoenix Unleashed* I could never get more then 10 hours on the battery and less with wifi on. Now with GB *perception 2 beta 3*, I get 18 hours with Bluetooth on, Background Sync On, under H *3G*, and the original battery that came with the phone. I am putting up with some of the issues that 2.3.3 has but to me I cannot go back to froyo as my battery life has never been this good Including with jf6 2.1 that originally shipped with my phone.
HTH,

While that may be the case, it doesn't always provide for the best signal. You have to test each one and see what works best for your area/situation.
Your battery temp seems very high. You may want to swap the battery before trying other things. Is the phone new? If so, At&t store should agree to swap it out for you.

*I had this posted over in the nexus forums and decided to move it over here for you guys to see now that I have this device as well*
I found a guide somewhere on the internet on the best way to calibrate battery stats on a rooted device (to fix incorrect battery reporting after flashing) when I had my old hero and I use it a lot to this day when flashing new roms/kernels so I decided to share the best way to do it here.
Step 1.
First and foremost charge the phone to 100%(Even if it says 100% wait about 5 minutes or so just be sure.)
Step 2.
Once it is at 100% go into data/system using your preferred explorer and delete the batterystats.bin file there.
Step 3.
Unplug the charger and reboot to recovery, wipe cache and dalvik cache and wipe battery stats once more while you're there just to make sure they're gone.
Step 4.
Power the phone down and plug it back in. Charge it to 100% while it's off (the battery bar can be deceiving so even once it shows it's full give it five more minutes or so to be sure) and then power up.
Once it is booted to the OS you should now see that the battery bar is at 100%. If not start back at step 1.
Final step.
It had come to my attention that this phone does not have a smart battery so fully discharging it is not a good idea. However I would recommend discharging it to below 20% before recharging. Thanks to hechoen for the info straight from Samsung.
After that you should have a fully calibrated battery and see correct battery stats.
Everybody enjoy! If this helped you please hit thanks!
*Thanks to whoever it was that wrote this up in the first place. If I knew who it was I would give proper thanks.

I could care less what that dude says. I know for a fact my battery reporting has gone funky before during flashing and calibrating it fixed it. For instance, it would say 92% and after a reboot it would change to like 94%.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
I just realized that this would be a non-issue if you're using any roms that get installed using AROMA since the /data partition gets formatted with ext4, it'll also wipe the batterystats.bin file, assuming you didn't do a data backup/restore.

Its actually not good on these batteries to drain them fully. If your battery readings start going crazy, such as losing 20% charge after a simple reboot, one simple wipe of the battery stats should fix that.
The whole process of charging fully before wiping, draining, recharging fully ect... isn't necessary.
I simply wipe stats once (at whatever my current charge is) and go on my way.

Just got off the phone with Samsung to find out whether or not this battery has a fuel gauge chip and it does not. I've assumed for a long time that it was a smart battery and I was wrong. So fully discharging is a bad idea as there is no chip to reset. As far as resetting the battery stats it won't have an effect on life but may correct reporting errors. I personally used to wipe it and then stopped. I have noticed no difference either way.

well, you should at least read a lot to get knowledge about how stuff works... and you obviously did not or you wouldn't call dudette a dude...
unless you have your own custom OS you just fogot step 8 - dance with rain stick around phone when it's charging...

I flashed Unnamed with Aroma, full wipe(s) no back ups and i'm having an issue sometimes when I reboot with between 60% - 90% I only have 10% - 20% once rebooted. So I would have to say that does not completely hold true even though it does make perfect sense.
So the "calibration" ritual may not actually calibrate the battery but it definitely is useful when having these issues.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Heres the deal doing this DOESNT improve battery life. All it does is get rid of "gremlins" in the file.
Better battery stats (that you can get here on xda) will do this for you each time you plug the phone in.

Your being to broad that doesn't mean anything to me all I see is 6days and your charging it every so often what's wrong? Your phone is lasting a day? Explain what exactly your doing you need to specify and further explain what your doing.
For example
In screenie I have 4 days on one charge.
I watched some netflix and barely any usage it was very minimal. And about every other 6 to 12 hours I turn off data and switch on airplane mode as you can see.
Another thing leaving your phone on for that much time just IMO makes the battery life die faster rather than fully charging do your usual stuff till the day ends and once done at night just shut it off charge turn back on in the morn.

there is no bug at all. it tells you the time since the phone has been on no from the last charge.
Lets say i use my phone and im around 30% and its been 8 Hours since i turned on my phone from 100%. once i plug it in it will keep track of the time my phones been on (Up time) not from last charge.
there is an app called Better Battery Stats but it causes wakelocks but it will show you those type of stats and more

well on my Epic it will say whatever time its been on since turned regardless of being charged or not, ive tested it out on several devices i think your losing your mind haha what does it matter anyways?
Its simply telling you how long you have been using the battery not when it was off the last charge.

For me it happens when the recharge doesn't make the battery goes above 90%. The graph will "reset" when the battery is charged above 90%.
