V20 by LG -> half hearted and UNFINISHED work???..screenshots to prove - Android General

ok...i saw several discrepancies with the stock v20 of LG ("b" and "n"). i will try and enumerate them here:
1. ANALOG CLOCK WIDGET: though 5 clocks are available, there are 4 more styles available....AND CAN BE MADE TO WORK. CHECK THE SCREENSHOT
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
2. THE RICHNOTES WIDGET: many of you might be using the ported richnotes by me from LG PRADA 3.0.
however, it is to be noted that there are richnotes files in the system of p970.
check the screenshot (find [email protected])
3. DIGITAL CLOCK WIDGET: there are more than 5 types of digital clock to choose from, yet we don't get that many options. check the screenshot:
4. SCENE [email protected] LAUNCHER: again many of you using my PRADA 3.0 port should have seen the nifty scene selection which allows you to select predefined scenes like social, work, personal, etc.
apparently, it is also present in the LGHOME of the P970 also. check the screenshot:
5. LOCATION OF THE WIDGET FILES:ok, this is a bit tricky. the widgets of Email and messaging has two types. a BIG one and a small "scrollable" one.
u can find the image(the png's) files of the big widget if you decompile the widget itself BUTTT for scrollable widget's associated image file, u have to go ALL the way back to decompiling the res-cappuccino @framework folder. weird, eh??
6. also, i don't know if it can be called a "glitch", but u cannot find the highest settings for camcorder (720p) at the media.xml files.
there might be some more, but i forgot
7. two camera apps???WHY???sersly, have you seen any other cell having two camera apps??
u can very well delete the "Camera.apk" from /system/app and the actual camera application of the black (i.e., ArcCamera.apk") will work just fine.
what do you think??apparently the "misses" are a bit too many for being a "mistake". instead am sure it's "DELIBERATE" on part of LG.

Yes,i think you right
imho, there are some unfinished work from LG
Just back when i used the stock 20n, there're so many dummy data (ex. Dummy bluetooth, dummy etc )
Maybe it's because we always force them to release the GB back then?
And about the camera,i didn't even notice before and you are right, there're 2 cam apps
Can you use the front cam when you del the camera.apk?
Sent from derp-mobile

I frozen Camera 1 with titanium and the phone works very good
There are more than 5 Animated wallpapers (I think), Tree in snow, Magnetic globe, Firework, Galaxy, RainyDay etc.. that cannot be selected.. any thoughts on that?

YES....apparently, even after such a long wait, i feel the update was not ready
and yes, there were so many "wallpaper.apk's". god knows why??
also i forgot to mention there were several other options for the notification toggle. like 3G and so...were they planning scrollable toggles??

Why we dont find our black developers? They name writing on versin info section(3845*#970#).Ex. my version is 20o and developer name is "lakshmi bhasker".Indian person probably.Maybe we find them e-mails and can communicate with them.

yes....apparently i have used version 20b and 20n, both had devs who were Indians. i remember one. sashi bhusan. cannot recall the other

u need some serious calibration. only if i could meet you personally, i would have taught you some.
i feel u r after me from the very first post itself and paradoxically using my own created SAPPHIRE rom.
the admin had to close a healthy thread because of your trolling before.
EVEN IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANY WORK TO DO, STOP BOTHERING ME. I CAN DO SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE for the black instead of replying to people like you. PLEASE STOP COMMENTING ON MY THREADS
P.S. I HOPE THIS THREAD IS NOT CLOSED BECAUSE OF THIS. the discussion is healthy except for a slouch. it can turn up something good for the black.

1.- how you did to add those clocks??
3.- if they're there, why can't we use them??
7.- maybe one is for the back cam and one for front cam?? but if I'm not wrong I think this appear at "removable apps" list

and for the livepapers, they're there at system>apps right? but when adding "live wallpaper" they aren't there

hey achyut first of all congratulations for your kind response because it is really kind and he obviously doesn't deserve it.
@gumm.patrick
how old are you?because you seem like a spoiled 6 year old..but to be honest 6 year olds are way more mature than you.everyone can use the power of the keyboard to attack others with words that mean nothing.and you use this weapon a lot.achyut declares to be noob comparing to others in this forum that may have more developing skills and knowledge than him..this doen't mean that he is on the same level as you.he is just modest.maybe he should teach you a thing or two.if you are indeed a young fellow you should start to learn some respect for others and i am telling you this as a teacher which is my profession.if on the other hand you are older that you seem then you can't do anything i guess.
ok on topic now i totally agree with you achyut.and i think that is why LG keeps on releasing new versions..strange that they did not include these things though.

Mwahahahaha
I knew that the ROM was unfinished/to early relesed the moment i saw the Energy Widget and compared it with the Stock version. LG has done a Good Job in cutting useful Funtionality and Customization away.
Why cant they just compile clean Android AOSP? Would be so much better. But no, better "guess" what the Customer wants

I think the reason might be the lateness of GB for LG devices. Developers might be compelled to release the ROMs as soon as they got a "stable" one. Remitting the completing part after. Like any other software out there to catch the deadline. This is first comes to mind (at least mine). But then some of these issues should have been completed with the release of V20o. So may be this was the idea but they forgot.. doesn't sound solid.. Who knows. LG has a softbelly on software. Anything could have happened.
Nice catch mate, air that LG's dirty laundry in public.
I am not a DEV may be i shouldn't post anything but i wanted to give my opinion. Mainly because i wanna show my support to achyut. NOT THAT HE NEEDS IT. He is a cool person with a lot of knowlegde concerning these (much more than most of us). This is more than enough reason for respect. But no reason is needed. Be respectful to everybody. And i don't see any reason for thread to be closed. Can be productive.

Right now LG is working on ICS for Optimus Black + they may add that stuff in ICS build.

I dug the LG PRADA 3.0 system dump. it's also 2.3.4 and has all of the props mentioned - FULLY WORKING.(except for the scrollable notification toggles of course.)
am sure if we dug the froyo too, we might have found such files
with the black, LG has got an awkward situation. they have numbered the cell too high (yes, "numbered"). p"970". higher than many of their newer alternatives. they actually want to concentrate on the better power house cells, but they cannot leave a p"970" and give updates to p"990",p"930",p"920" and so. they should have numbered it p"910" or something like that
wild guess, but might be so...and of the clock widget, i'll post it here.

Write now i'm using v20e and i can say its the most stable awesomely fast and properly tweaked by LG this time. I even saw they increased low memory killer parameters set for large values to improve performance. So yes i think its not unfinished but completely worked.
As per my knowledge the dummy files are important for testing perpose and that must be there because we have remotecall app that lg has given us means if problem occur u can call lg and they will remotely access ur phone same as teamviewer so there they need dummy apks and i think also its related to hidden menu tests.
About clock Widgets i will decompile and read the code and will check if we can use the extra ones by some mod.
Conclusion i can say the new update v20e(I rooted it) is more than good rom than any other rom available for our OB.

I can say the same for V20o, I guess, e and o are very similar, for different markets. The original V20 (a, b, n) was a very bad attempt, which was released because they were sooooo late. This new versions are totally usable, vith wery good battery time and smooth user experience.

Just found out that other camera app is there because in hidden menu we have camera test so it is used for that. You can check it by freezing it and then going to hidden menu and perform camera test will be FC lg guys know what they do

You can rename images I believe. Example is Digital clock. The numbers can be renamed to the one being used (blue?), sample ORANGE numbers. Also the background. And whatever extra it has (widgets, clocks) rename images what you prefer. In so doing when you select the widget, your desired design will be used.
The idea is to interchange image names.. And you have a new widget.

Great useful apps with hideous UIs or Icons...

Hi...
I love Android...however, one thing I do hate, is that a LOT of Devs seem to lack any sense of style and design in the market...(also if u look at the Post ur Screens thread you see this horrible sense of design permeates throughout the user-base as well)
Anyways, I figured I'd ask you guys...what apps on the Market, that you thoroughly use do you feel have hideous and/or tacky, UIs or Icons?
Me I'll list 5:
OI File Manager....SERIOUSLY? Still using 1.1 Folder Icons? I don't think it'd take too much to sexify the app...it's useful, and is called by a lot of other apps on the market, it'd be nice if it looked good...which it does not, I know people will defend it, but no, just like Android pre 2.0, OI File Manager is absolutely hideously designed..sad for such a useful and widely called app.
DroCap2....WOW...super useful, and the in app UI is great and simple and will work with any theme...however that ugly ass icon...and the notification icon...I emailed the Dev asking to design him a new Icon with no answer...but seriously, I can't imagine someone making that and being like "Yes, THIS Icon is the business...upload it" Hopefully he eventually gets back to my email but being that it's been a month, I'mma call that unlikely...
NYC Subway Map....this one is just an icon (and I wish they'd implement the pinch to zoom API in the map simply for WOW factor) but yea...the Icon looks like a 2 second rush job to create an Android 2.0+ icon and failing miserably...it's horribly rendered, tragically mis-sized, and that sucks as that is one of my most used apps especially when I am in NYC...
APP UPDATED IN MARKET, LOOKS GREAT. Look for NYCMate brought to you by DenseBrain in collaboration with Episode 6
Root Explorer...Come ON man...From the old purple Android pre 2.0+ Folder Icon with the root on it to the hideous file cabinet with the root on it to every single icon inside the app, this is one of the UGLIEST Android Apps out there...and like the others I've listed, it is absolutely useful and simple...I bought Su File Explorer and I don't even use it because Root Explorer does everything I need, without the bloat. (I'm sure this "bloat" is needed by others but in my opinion for my needs it is bloat) But seriously, the entire design is hideous. I actually went and replaced EVERY Icon in this apk as I just couldn't bring myself to use it as it was, especially the way it clashes with both stock android 2.0, and ANY theme.
Bettercut - THIS ICON AND UI WERE HIDEOUS FROM THE GET GO...update people...seriously.
honorable mentions (Decent UIs/Icons, but eh)
Astro File Manager...I just don't like the iconset...I figured at least the most widely used file manager on Android (citation needed) would follow the Android tenets of design in a post 2.0 world...It does not...the 3/4 view Icons with the faux gloss, too much "eye candy" not enough design...love the app however (my first download before Android started auto restoring apps) but I feel the design needs to mature along with Android itself.
A LOT OF GAMES...seriously...a lot of games have the worst icons...and not even by far...simply a slight resize and maybe a border with a faux bevel and matte finish...wouldn't take a lot but I figured at least game icons can be consistent with the design tenets of the UI....they are not. usually 100% square too...sucks cause a lot of great games on Android.
Engadget for Android - HORRIBLE Icon...nuff said.
Speedtest - just change the angle on the icon...front facing would work fine. that slight 3/4 angle is just slightly pet peevish to me...
K-9 Mail...horrible Icon as well, especially for such an amazing app and great UI (well since I last used it)
Please add to this list, and don't let your love of Android stop you from being subjective.
______________________________
Rant:
Android is a great UI, and is maturing nicely, and hopefully with the UI/UX refresh planned for 3.0 it becomes attractive beyond attractive...however I noticed a lot of the best devs don't seem to have any sense of design, and having been to a developers lab in NYC I can assure you that design is the last thing on their minds (or was) judging from the business cards I saw. Post I/O 2010 I saw a fireside chat (or whatever) where they were discussing UI standards and Icon standards...and it was a good lab subtly suggesting (and REAL subtly begging) that developers start unifying the experience across apps which unfortunately is an Apple tenet (not just iPhone) and one that works...I only hope Android gets such a consistency amongst itself...with the freedom to change and theme and etc that we've come to know and love.
Sadly the iPhone is the defacto standard, and despite their systems shortcomings to me (I hate the general UI for one, sea of icons? no bueno) however I love their developers commitments to staying consistent (probably because apple has a proverbial gun to their heads) and providing a cleaner UX for the general consumer...if Android devs got this consistency...imagine our UX...It matters guys...and as much as any of you want to dislike apple overall (and I'm with you) there is still a LOT they do right...so we should do better...period
Please add to the list and feel free to share your thoughts...I already know at least one popular themer and a few others members here feel the same way...so I know it can't be just me.
OH and any "WELL JUST DON'T DOWNLOAD THE APP, ANDROID HAS OPTIONS DOWNLOAD A DIFFERENT APP" will not be responded to. At all...

I agree to some extent - programmers tend to be not great at ICON & UI design (me included). Perhaps you should post alternatives here (Before & After icons) to show them/us how it should be done. Also, include tips, a quick reference to googles recommendations & maybe even some templates (GIMP / PSP / Photoshop / Paint.NET) to encourage devs!
I look forward to some samples.

Thanx for the hread !!**
.....................
Beautiful Widgets:
Beautiful (Smaller) Home is great.
All the others don´t fit to eclair & froyo style, too big & oldfashioned.
-> Beautiful Vibrate, Silent,.....
NOTE: This app has been updated in Market and this problem does not exist anymore, I am keeping this post up though to see what a little thought can do for an app Icon.
here are 4 quick NYC Subway Map Icons I just made (basically one icon, I just added the MAP text to the other and some alterations in shadowing) Borrowing the theme of the subway icons (FRACKING DUH!!!) and using a similar font to the subway signs on the icon (Helvetica 65 Medium - Bold)
They can use some work obviously, but this is what 5 minutes with a moderate sense of design gives you.
I'm reaching out to all devs with ugly icons...if your app is for free, I will do my best to make you an icon...FOR FREE.
However UI design is not my forte, but do not be afraid to ask people...we are a community more than willing to help and we have some VERY talented designers here.
Dialer One:
I don't know why they didn't just mimic the new icon for Android considering it is meant to be a replacement for the Android Dialer...so taht's exactly what I did...except a color change. Negating extract, PS load, save and upload time, about 20 seconds of work..
Fits perfectly with the stock theme, is distinctive, and simple...
you don't really have to be too fancy, just go with the flow of Android...it almost seems like Devs are fighting with the OS...work with it...seriously.
(same goes for some of the icons in say, ChompSMS and Dialer One and other apps that use contact icons...why use a new custom icon for the contacts with no pictures when you can simply use the one Android uses...it'll create a great degree of continuity and flow.)
ALSO, there are a LOT of royalty free icons out there that fit, or can be slightly modified to fit the Android UI...don't be afraid to use them.
NOTE: App updated in Market so these issues no longer apply, I am keeping it up though to show what a little UI management can do for the UX of an app.
Modified App Design: NYC Subway Map (Sorry if it seems I'm picking on the app, but it just came to me watching that Android video) I haven't made a home page yet, but judging from their one now, it won't be hard to make one like Twitter and Facebook have.
Before:
After:
Links to Home (which may be redundant as the graphic/icon to the left is supposed to default to home as it does on Market, Facebook and Twitter) The Bus Map and a Greyed out Subway Map since we are there already....Simple, Sleek, and just that addition alone would make the UX much better.
Tunewiki is just awful as well.
androidVNC, Gmote
I had a friend replace androidVNC's icon and I renamed it "VNC". It was just too useful an app to let it go on like that. I'll upload the edited app if anyone's interested.
I think that there are enough designers out here that love to help dev's to make android apps more UI friendly. They can always ask here on forum (didn't see that much people asking).
maybe if some volunteers can step forward and put their names here so developers can contact these people, just a idea.

Great idea. I'm volunteering. We need this thread to gain more exposure and anyone who feels a certain way about a certain app should email the dev and direct them here. This is important for the future of android overall.
The problems is not developers. it is Google.
The whole android scene is so much similar to Win Mo 6.x. The operating system is solid, but it lacks cohesive UI. Also, the OS does not provide with attractive default shell and thus developers, who are very good at programming, decide to do their own UI, only to fail miserably. look back at Win Mo 6.x apps and compare them to apps in market. They both just look out of place on the phone.
iPhone OS gives a beautiful cohesive UI shell to programmers and that makes a huge difference. Not all programmers have style of sense..so OS has to lead with an example.
Also, the launcher icons look ugly because android does not do anything to make them look cohesive in the launcher. If each icon is using it's style, it looks chaotic. Samsung Touchviz does a good job of putting a square background behind each app icon. Things just look more organized. little touch can go a long way.

That's true too. Though google did provide a design aesthetic with the latest I/O which I linked in the OP. I like the current icons though pre Android 2.0 was pathetic. I really hope this palm dude works wonders with 3.0.

FrameMe - The easy way to show off your favorite photos [Update 4-29-11]

So, this is my first attempt at programming for android. Well, my first attempt at java as well. Regardless, I am pleased with the outcome and though I would share. As a father of four, I always like keeping a photo of my kids handy. The gallery is nice, but not for a quick, "Have you seen my daughter recently" situation. So I went to the market... Surprisingly I didn't find much. At least not much that did what I wanted. So, here is what I wanted and what I currently have.
Application Website is http://deanstudios.net/dev/frameme

Test it out and let me know if you find something else.
ToDo's:
Add additional frames
Add better support for hdpi devices. Need something to test with though.
As you can see it is pretty simple and straight forward. For me, it also does the job well. I have other ideas for it, feature wise as well as new frames. I am hoping to have time to implement them. However, I do have four kids so we will see. If there is interest, I might throw it into the market as well. For now, you can download it at the links below.
If you enjoy this app and want to support me it is available in the market for $0.99. It will always be available here free so don't worry. The QR Code below will take you directly to the market page. If you have bought it and enjoy it please consider rating it.
I would love to hear what you think and what device you are using it on if you have something other than a Hero. As it is, it was designed to support mdpi and android 2.1. Enjoy!
Updates:
FrameMe 1.3.5 - Several other memory related issues have been corrected. There is also the addition of a "No Frame" option when choosing your frame. An about screen was also added and available from the app drawer as well as the full screen image menu. Support for the Atrix's external sd card was also included.
FrameMe 1.3.3 - Added additional work-around's for the "out-of-memory" issues. Should most of the FCs due to bitmap creation and use. Hopefully you notice a difference.
FrameMe 1.3.1 - I am sorry 1.3.1 took so long to get here. There are some serious bugs in the Droid X gallery that I found in the last release. It took me a while to find a solution that didn't break all the other phones out there. Now 1.3.1 works on Droid X as well. (at least with my testers). I also added three new frames including one to go along with HTC Sense or similar design. Hope you enjoy.
FrameMe 1.3.0 - Okay, so a lot of you have been asking for a 2x2 widget and cycling of the image in the widget. Well, 1.3.0 brings all that and a little more. Not only was a 2x2 widget added, but a 1x2 and 2x1 as well. For those widgets using the directory option you can also have the displayed image cycle through images in the directory at a user set interval. Under the hood there has been several performance optimizations and that pesky Galaxy S bug is now dead as well. It should work on all the phones in the series. Also, landscape images are shows in landscape mode so you don't loose half the image. For now, that is about it. Again, I am sorry you have to redo all your widgets but it was necessary to support different widget sizes.
FrameMe 1.2.0 - Version 1.2.0 has had quite a bit of code rewritten. For starters the configuration screen now shows a full widget preview on your own wallpaper. The frame selection is now graphical and pressing menu when a widget is clicked provides an option to reconfigure that widget. There have also been some minor bugs squashed in the directory mode functionality.NOTES: Database has changed, please remove widgets before upgrading.
FrameMe 1.1.2 - Addition of several new frames. Directory mode was tweaked to allow the thumbnail image to be used as the first image when clicked.NOTES: For Directory enabled widgets, the thumbnail image will be in the rotation twice if it was selected from an image within the target directory.
FrameMe 1.1.1 - Corrected the memory issues in the directory option. It now can support unlimited images in a directory.NOTES: Images are loaded and scaled in real time. To improve fling speed size your images appropriate for your phone. It will work regardless though.
FrameMe 1.1.0 - Added the ever requested directory option. Now you can bind a widget to a directory on your sdcard and when clicked it will fling between the images in that directory. Thumbnail image is not required to be in that directory and still shows in the fling list for other non-directory widgets. NOTES: This modifies the database so you will need to re-add you current widgets. Also, it is easy to run out of memory when pointing to a directory with lots of images. It does resize though to help with this.
FrameMe 1.0.1 - Added the Rustic Edge frame & code cleanup.
FrameMe 1.0.0 - Corrected a few bugs with canceling out of the config screen without selecting an image. Removed the fling action if only one widget (image) is available. Code cleanup.
KidFrame 1.3 - Added a few more frames. Also made it so if you click on an widget to get a full size image you can now fling (swipe) and it will cycle through all widget images without having to close and click again. First image delays a little while it is processing and I am not completely sold on it yet. Also added my icon in the correct place for hdpi devices.
KidFrame 1.2 - Created resized thumbnails for display on the widget. This should help with memory resources and allow the number of widgets to be almost unlimited. Also added a third frame (was just playing with frames).
1.1 - Link above has been updated with the newest version: Code has been rewritten to us a database back-end. Configurations now are kept after a reboot. The selected image is now user cropped and resized so it should not limit the number of widgets you can add. Hopefully there will be more to come.
Great app. Thanks. I had an idea to fill a 4x4 screen with images of my family for easy viewing but using ADW the 6th+ widget fail to load. So I will go with 4-5. Cant wait to see what other frames you have in mind.

Looks like this may be a memory issue. If you resize your images manually to around 600 on the longest side you should be able to use as many as you want. I played around and had issues with camera images (5mp) not loading but smaller (640x480) images would just fine.
I will look into actually resizing the images for the thumbnails. This should help. Thanks for the feed back. I am glad you like it.
I'm glad I stumbled across this! Thanks much!

Yeah, I am working on the reboot thing. It is driving me a little nuts. I will update the original post once I have it figured out. Thanks for giving it a try.
I don't personally have a use for this sort of thing, but thought I would congratulate you on your foray into the Java/Droid world - keep up the good works, and enjoy raising them kiddos!

Thanks! It has been a hair pulling ride. I should start my 4 year old in java. That way it could be a family activity.
Nice! My mom will love this app. I will wait to tell her about it though until it resizes the pics to thumbnails. She'll want to dedicate multiple, full, screens to her niece and currently it looks like that's not possible without getting errors.

Just installed 1.2. I will let you know how it goes.
edit: It's working great. I have 7 loaded on one of my screens and no blanking out or losing images on reboot. Thanks. I love this app.
Any way you can make the crop box be the same dimensions as the screen so we can tell what will show up. with the current setup you have to center the image so it show when you open it.

I can, and I had actually tested it that way. The problem is that if you select an image based on the portrait view it never works correctly in landscape. With the 1:1 square, if you center what you want to focus on it works in both modes.
I realize that many people never use a landscape home (many devices don't support it) but many of us do. If enough people make the request, I can change it though.... or if you device doesn't support a landscape home screen then maybe I could make you a custom build... It might be a few days though.
Thank you, great job, working great on the evo.

That is great to hear! I was hoping it would work okay on the hdpi devices. I have limited ability to test outside of my own Hero. I am glad it looks okay. If you have the ability, I would love to see a screen shot from the EVO.
I am glad it is being enjoyed!
Hey, on you EVO does it have a custom icon or the little green android stock thing? I think I need to make an hdpi icon...
It is the stock icon, Here are some screens from the evo:
The only thing I noticed & im not sure if it is because of the evo's screen size or not, but some of the pic gets cut off, well not the full size pic you know, I have to stretch & center it when cropping...

[APP][2.2+]Holo File Explorer (Update 4-11-2012)

Now on Google+ !
https://plus.google....615763333814534
Update 5-27-2012
This update replaces the text based view pager indicator with a sliding bar that looks just like the stock launcher's indicator. I'm still not satisfied with the contrast between the bar and the surrounding elements, because it isn't easy to see at this point. I'll keep tinkering with it, and would welcome suggestions. In addition, I have figured out how to allow viewing of read protected directories like /data/. My implementation isn't perfect, which leads me to my next point. I have come to realize that there are some fundamental shortcomings to a few of the apps underpinnings, and I need to find a way to fix them. I have yet to figure out how to make the root process persist so that root functionality doesn't throw up a toast every time it does something, and I seriously need to clean my code.
Therefore, my plan is thus: I'm going to take a crack at helping the dev of OpenExplorer figure out how to enable full root functionality. His code is the only resource I have been able to glean much useful info from, and his own implementation is still half-baked. (seriously, why are there no robust root related resources out there?) Then, (tentatively) I'm going to fork his repo and replace the look and feel of his app with that of Holo File Explorer, while retaining what appears to be a vastly superior back end. The downside to this is that we're looking at something of a rabbit hole, so you guys may not hear from me for a bit. The upside is that forking OpenExplorer will provide a less buggy experience, plus lots of extras like network folder, dropbox and box.net access.
I'm also hopeful that at the end of this process, I'll have my own code hosted on GitHub and ready for collaboration. If I can get interested parties to help with development, It'll speed up the rate of releases. Because to be honest, my rate of release hasn't exactly been timely of late, and you guys deserve better than that. This is the best answer I can come up with to solve the problem. What does everyone think?
Original Rootz thread: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/17572-ap...er-formerly-ics-styledswipe-update-3-29-2012/
Hello Everyone. I've been working on a new file explorer app for phones since the beginning of the year, and I would like to present what I have accomplished so far in order to get some feedback. The reason why I decided to make this app is that most (if not all) of the file explorers out there have clunky/unoptimized user interfaces and/or lackluster feature sets.
I recently purchased a Galaxy Nexus and had decided that I needed a file browser to match the aesthetic appeal of the rest of the system. After hours of searching through several dozen of the market's best browsers, the only one I could find with any degree of stock visual polish was inKa file browser. Unfortunately, the app was too basic for my needs. No root features at all, etc. This prompted me to build my own file browser (although it is still far from complete).

}
What the app has thus far:
1) Swipable pages. There are 2 (for now - hoping to enable "new tabs/pages") swipable views that can be navigated independantly (just like you would on a desktop computer with 2+ explorer windows open.
2) Files can be cut, copied and then pasted within or across the swipable pages. (long press anywhere on an item or check the boxes in order to bring up the "contextual action mode" (screenshot 3)
3) The drop down at the top of the page displays the folder hierarchy for the currently selected folder view.
4) The start of a file details screen (Screenshot 5). There are a lot of functions that people can perform on files (MD5 checking roms is a big one in my mind) and I just don't like the idea of relegating those functions to dialog boxes or menus. I know that this kind of view isn't something that any of the other file explorers have, but I think there is value in departing from that convention. Note: MD5 and permissions aren't implemented yet. Soon though.
5) MD5 summer and checker is now working! I tested it on a 100+mb rom and it ran pretty quickly (5 or 6 seconds) on my Galaxy Nexus, so Rom Flashers might enjoy using this one. I don't have the UI polished to my satisfaction yet, but the functionality is there.
6) Sharing files is now enabled. The updated ShareActionProvider for 4.0+ will be coming at some point.
7) Opening/installing files/apks! Bugs aside, the app now handles almost all of the usual file explorer functions.
8) Themes! Switch them under general settings, and then exit if switching between dark and light or darkactionbar to get the text colors to reload properly. Working on fixing this.
What isn't done yet:
1) Root actions. This is a biggie, as I want this app to satisfy both power users and casual users at the same time. Feel free to comment on your most desired root functions.
2) File summary views. This would open if you clicked on a file, and would present a summary of the meta information. This view would also provide functions like md5 comparison, opening in external apps, permission setting, etc...
3) Themes. As you can see, the app is currently built on Holo Light (one of the ICS stock system themes). I plan on adding an option for Holo (dark) and maybe more. Depends on the demand.
4) A robust data summary view, including something similar to what you find in the DiskUsage app in the market, as well as some other metrics. Maybe even an miui-like file type size summary.
5) I'm considering a view (linked to from a button in the top right corner of the app) that displays currently running and finished file operations. I think this might be better than throwing up a dialog box for big file copy/paste tasks and having it keep the user from doing anything until the operation is done.
6) Bookmarks
7) Search. Not sure if this will be a basic file search or a grander attempt at indexing and speed.
8) A text editor.
9) Other basic things like an actual settings page, polished action mode icons, image previews and apk icons, an actual app icon, proper folder and file icons (the one's in place now look terrible and are improperly sized, but I'd rather focus on other things first), and general UI polish.
10) Image previews And there you are. Please provide any and all feedback/criticism/praise/trolling that you can. I'd really like to build this into something that works for everyone. Thanks!
The Story of my Progress Thus Far:
UPDATE - 2/9/2012:
Jake Wharton just released beta 6 of Action Bar Sherlock last night, so I'll hopefully have a backwards compatible version of the app out soon (maybe within the next day or so? Depends on how many things are broken in Gingerbread and beyond.) Done as of "alpha 2". I have an old Droid X, so I just need to do some flashing to test both Froyo and Gingerbread. I've also made incremental progress in a lot of areas. A basic settings screen is in place, "new folder" and "refresh" action buttons have been implemented, and I have the start of the file properties screen together. Things are moving along quickly!
UPDATE - 2/14/2012
New stuff:
*A placeholder settings menu now appears when users click settings
*See screenshot 5 for a look at the file info screen. Currently accessed by clicking on a file. Not sure if this is how things will stay, since this is a departure from the ususal "click to open in another app" behavior.
*Gingerbread compatibility! May be a few bugs here and there, but I have the thing running on my old Droid X with CM7. Theme is a little rough for GB devices, so I have some work to do there.
*Buttons more clearly indicate whether they have been implemented.
UPDATE - 2/15/2012
New stuff:
*A whole bunch of bug fixes dealing with copy, cut and paste. Things are still a little broken, but way better than they were before. Remaining issues deal with the UI not properly reflecting paste status - nothing sinister.
*Blue dividers between each page of the viewPager
*Sharing files now works! Select 1 or more files and send them via 3rd party app.
*Files can now be opened in 3rd party apps from the file view screen *Files can be MD5 summed and compared in the file view screen
*I did some checking and things seem to work in Froyo too
*Tinkered with the file icon logic a little bit, and in addition to some less obvious things I got apk icons working. *Based on some of the name suggestions, I renamed the app to "File Swipe." Name still isn't final, but someone mentioned that "Swipe" was a bit confusing. I'm listening to your name suggestions, so please keep em' coming.
*Polished up the action bar icons a tad bit (Search used to be a little too fuzzy, Data summary was too small, add didn't reflect that it was for adding folders, and bookmarks was too dark.)
UPDATE - 2/27/2012
New stuff:
*Themes! In addition to the original ICS Holo Light theme, we now have a dark and light-with-dark-actionbar theme. (You need to exit the app using the new exit button in order to get the themes to switch properly. Working on fixing this.) CAVEAT: There is currently a bug in ActionBarSherlock which prevents the loading of action bar icons when they are referenced via theme. Therefore, for now we are stuck with text instead of icons on the action bar. According to Jake Wharton's github bug tracker, we are about 9 days away from another Release Candidate, and the bug should be fixed then. Until then, don't freak out! (fixed now)
*A lot of internal refactoring and housecleaning. Not that interesting to you guys, but it had to be done in order to make themes work.
*App now handles reopening and orientation changes without crapping out (used to stop updating the navigation dropdown and would sometimes force close on actions). Learned some interesting things about viewpagers (the swipey pages as found in the market) in the last few days, so I'm hoping to be able to share that info with other coders out there in some fashion.
*The beginnings of a settings page (whoooo!)
*Settings includes the theme switcher and a popup to update the default directory. Haven't gotten it to verify directory input yet, so don't go too crazy.
*A new exit button. As mentioned earlier, you need to exit in order to get the themes to load properly. May disappear later. Not sure.
UPDATE - 3/5/2012
New stuff:
*Nothing show-stopping. Just little tweaks and fixes here and there
*After talking with some of you guys, tapping on a file now opens the file instead of a details screen. Details are now reached via the menu. The option will only present itself when a single file item is selected. Keep up the feedback (because I listen)!
*Tweaked some of the colors a little to provide contrast between file names and file details.
*Pulled in the latest code base from Jake Wharton's ActionBarSherlock. Therein lies the real bounty of changes. (This guy is a beast)
*Pre-3.0 users now get a proper ICS navigation dropdown, instead of that bloody spinner list.
*Icons are back, so things are looking normal again.
UPDATE - 3/28/2012
Holy bugger this has been a crazy month. Since the last update, I moved from PA to NC and started a new job. It's been a while but thanks for your patience.
New stuff:
*I'm back! (whoooooooo!)
*A hopefully bug-free scroll position/history stack. Essentially this means that instead of taking you up a level, the back button returns you to the previous folder you were at (each scroll pane gets its own history too), and it also remembers your scroll position when you go back. It's a small touch, but it really makes the whole thing more natural.
*Moved the pagertitlestrip from the bottom to the top and changed the styling a bit (as inspired by today's google maps/navigation update today). You'll all have to let me know if you like the change. Haven't figured out how to shrink the text size on it either, so those caps should be less obnoxiously large sometime soon. I'll try and make sure you don't have to wait another month before the next update Maybe sometime this weekend. Depends on how ambitious I am.
Update 4-11-2012
The most obvious change for today is the the theme. I've switched the default over to the app's "Identity" theme. The new goods are pictured in the updated screenshots. I've also fixed the app so that it displays the navigation dropdown at load time, and I figured out the bug that was making everyone's root file location only display one folder. There are probably some other small visual tweaks, but nothing that important.
Download "Alpha 9" apk here: http://goo.gl/olMcn

I think the most used, for most users, are copy/cut/paste/delete files on /system, and set permissions for files there.

That's what I figured. As soon as I can get my file operation scheduler hammered out, I can start on the root file operations. The ones you mentioned are at the top of my list.
the ones mentioned + change owner, create softlink, run .sh script (basicly it's just "busybox sh script.sh")

That would be zip/tar/etc. I do recognize that the label "archive" should be changed (since it does have gmail/deletion meaning attached to it), but I didn't want to just use zip either because zip only refers to one kind of file compression. Any ideas on how to handle that? Should I label it "compress" or just say screw it and use "zip" to initiate zips and tars?
looks amazing! Probably gonna move over to this file explorer when root features are added.
I'd go for "zip". While technically it's not correct everyone knows what it means with zip being the most known archive format.

Fair enough. I'll switch the label over for the next update. I'll look at a better icon too. I don't think the current one is very good for "zip," especially since there is a pretty cohesive icon design language out there for Zip already.

Looking really good, I will be following closely, once it has root stuff I will swap from root explorer in a heartbeat, actually, I will install it, and let you know what I normally can do with root explorer but is missing from this, as I am not 100% sure what you need root access todo.
Main root (I think?) stuff I do:
Accessing the root dir, messing with system files permissions, and pasting apks into the system dirs.
This might become my primary file tool once it gains root powers. Looking very great.
-Root with mount system as writable and change permissions;
-LAN/FTP;
-Dropbox.
With these Holo File Explorer would have no rival. Would be PERFECT!
Looks really nice, but unfortunately it shows only the LOST.DIR folder from my sd, nothing additional.

Google Apps:http://cmw.22aaf3.com/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
EDIT: If i get to 15 thanks I'll upload my personal fully tweaked version, which includes Supercharger by zepplinrox/hamdir, LordMod's kernel and many more!
EDIT2: Thanks a lot for the reviews. For the T9 problem I will temporarily replace it with another dialer until Lezo OS updates.
For the random chinese apps, I've removed it from the tweak version so no more randoms in the rom
For the calender, I've replaced it with stock calender till Lezo OS updates.
The Tweaked Version should be up in a few hours time when I'm done clearing minor bugs. So if there is more bugs please keep telling
Me so i can clear all at once making a perfect ROM!
EDIT3:Really sorry but I wasn't able to fix the T9 dialer problem. If you really need, I would recommend you to download either Go Dialer or DX Home's Dialer. Both are equally good to me..
And currently uploading the Tweaked Version (T.V) of the rom.
Will include a step-by-step of a super Tweaked Extraordinary/Efficient VErsion(S.T.E.V.E). A normal TV will be the same as the clean one. For the S.T.E.V.E Version, you will have to do another round of flashing
GUYS AND GALS! TWEAKED VERSION IS UP! SCROLL DOWN FOR MORE DETAILS!
And also, give your opinions about this rom and i'll modify it by all means.
Those having Chinese at bootup, follow this 3 easy and simple steps to get back onto the right track.
1)At homescreen press menu and click bottom right(settings).
2)There will be 4 sections when you click settings, go to the 2nd section(has 4 choices) and click the last choice. That will bring you into language and keyboard settings.
3)Click the first choice and you will be able to pick Chinese and English(should be easy to see which is what).
Bamm! English is set! If this helped thanks!
Those who have tried out the T.V or even better S.T.E.V.E, please give your reviews and inform me about the bugs except for the ones which are already spotted ( Calender having chinese words, T9 Dialer not totally working ).
Thanks for all those who supported me. Just one day already 140 downloads. Really appreciated you all for spending the time to flash this rom and yea....
Sorry guys and gals for the inconvenience about the phone crashing bug. now uploading the patched version. need full wipe all that again. :/
Really sorry I wasn't around yesterday so I didn't managed to fix the bug in time. This time it will be patched.
PATCHED TV VERSION IS UP! http://www.mediafire.com/?y6lr1ciixuor776! mind helping me test. my DHD is charging :X
Bugs Fixedhone crashing bug (probably).

Download Link for FULLWIPE:http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?ndhs1fnhcl0ad3z
2)Boot phone up, do all necessary things like setting up your connection(Wifi/3G) (except adding any google accounts to sync with) then reboot into recovery.
3)Flash the Google Apps, and reboot, and set up google account.
4)Open Market/Play Store and test if there is still force closes or not.
Download Link for the T.V Version: http://www.mediafire.com/?y6lr1ciixuor776
Download Link for making S.T.E.V.E Version:
2 Way Recording Kernel:http://www.mediafire.com/?24ric090h9agwht
Regular Kernel:http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?gq4m6zjnq336rbt
-50 UV(Super Saves Battery):
Supercharger Script:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276
For the S.T.E.V.E Version, after you have done flashing the rom normally with the steps provided, continue doing this steps.
1)Choose your choice of kernel. 2Way Recording Kernel(May Drain Battery IDK WHY) or regular kernel. Go into recovery and flash it.
2)If you want longer battery life, you can just flash the -50UV script.
3)Reboot.
4)If you know what to do with the supercharger script, I would mostly recommend you to go do it. After setting up driver options (mostly everything I would turn on [choose build.prop rather than local.prop,as it is more stable and workable], choose choice 8, which should be supper unhelled 768HP! *I forgotten what was it called but it is choice 8*
5)You have gotten yourself a S.T.E.V.E Phone (I'm not talking about Steves Job.)
looks nice..little like SPB shell....it's ok for me

Go2xraj, good to know that you have set it to English. So how's the rom? I personally tested it myself and its battery saving, quite good performance. If anyone wants a tweaked version, which is what I'm personally using now, thanks this post. If it gets more than 10, I'll upload it

I wouldn't mind seeing some humility included with the rom. Aside from that, It's nice to see a new rom and such enthusiasm.

Sorry buddy, no can do. I have no idea. I don't even know how to theme.
The day will come when I learn.
What I meant with my previous comment, is that when one wants something and doesn't get it, that person is self creating a scenario where he looses motivation to continue. (I hope that made sense) Don't seek for approval. Just do it because you enjoy it.

The Steam mobile app is definitely due an update, the last update was released in March 2012, but I don't see that changing for a long time.
The current interface for the Steam app is terrible, low quality images all over the show, it's a direct port from the iOS app, and that most certainly
does not follow the Android design guidelines. If Valve won't fix and update the app, who will?
I will.
This App is a modification to the official app from Valve on the Play Store. This mod completely changes the user interface from the ugly interface
that is currently in use, to a more pleasing interface known as "Holo". The visuals of this app follow the Android design guidelines as closely as it
possibly can without having to recode the entire app.
As well as this app being a visual update, the app also comes with speed increases, stability and general smoothness all the way throughout the app.
The standard app uses images for the text input box, send button and many more features of the app; using images for assets such as this contribute
to slowing down the speed of the app due to there being more files to read from. I have removed the need for many images in this app by moving the assets
from using images to using official Android code (Assets such as chat text input and the send button).
Every single visual asset of this app has been changed and rebuilt using the Android guidelines. The action bar is no longer an ugly bar with diagonal pin stripes
with a gradient overlay, it's now a single colour Android action bar. The chat bubbles are no longer obnoxious low quality bubbles, they're now high quality boxes
similar to that of the boxes used for Hangouts. All these visual changes and more in the app.
On the official app, scrolling through web pages (such as people's profiles) was painful, scrolling would take forever with a huge noticeable lag on every scroll,
making tasks such as viewing your games list unbearable.
To install this app, you must first of all uninstall the official app from the Play Store if you currently have that on your device.
Once the app is uninstalled, you can then install this version.

Looks great! Really needed this, I couldn't take much more of the default app's appearance.
If only Valve would do something about it sooner
Would it be possible to drag the side panel menu in from the side, and hide it away with another swipe? Similar to the new Play Store style?
Other than that amazing job!

In the current state the app is in, I cannot. However, I am working on a separate app which will replace this, that app will be full holo and be on the Play Store.
How exactly do you modify an app like this? Is there a general overview/tutorial somewhere?
God I would love this done to the Rdio app.

There are various programmes which will decompile an app, once you've decompiled the app, you will be left with the apps source code.
Once you've got the source code, you can start modifying images, XML files and Java files. Once you've done, you can recompile it, usually using the same programme as the one you used to decompile, although the signature will be different

Oh my god oh my god oh my god THANK YOU! I have been waiting for such an update for aaaages. I've posted the link for a few of my Steam friends and they're testing it out - here's what we discovered.
I found a first bug and a thing or two which can be reverted:
- If you have pending messages, touching the number near the name doesn't open the chat. I need to touch the name, then touch chat.
- The message boxes used to be gray and blue, now everything is white. If you can add alternating colors, it'd be great!
Suggestions for expanding features (which may be impossible since decompiling doesn't give the original source, but asking can't hurt!)
- Do you think you can fix the notification system? Steam somehow doesn't push them like WhatsApp does.
- Steam group chats is something the app has lacked for forever!
- Ability to clear history of certain chats while leaving others untouched?

The bug with tapping the chat button not working is a long standing bug in the normal Steam app and is completely random whether it happens or not, I will continue to look into a fix for this.
Alternating colours were a thought while developing, however in the end it was decided to use completely white. The white is much more appealing than alternating colours, it also attempts to mimic the Hangouts chat boxes.
I assume you mean to have the notifications to include what the message is?
It would be incredibly hard to add this, but I may attempt this in the future.
This you already can, just enter a chat with a certain button, press on the overflow menu and press the button that drops down.
Is it possible for you to release the source code or is Steam's license prohibiting that? Just asking since my Steam account is too valuable to be put at risk. Now, I am not saying that OP is out here to steal peoples login info, but there's always a risk involved when you are logging in through a 3rd party app.
If only Valve would man up and update the damn app. It's been what, over 1½ years since they updated it, yes, it looks horrible, it's slow and barely usable.

The chat button not working problem just appeared for me for two people I usually speak with, didn't happen before, but I think that's a coincidence then.
If you could include the option for alternating colors, it'd be great. Google design choices aren't always perfect either and I like to see who's who at a glance.
With the notification, I mean that the notifications often don't get pushed but feel like they get fetched, since they often don't notify while the screen is off and when the screen is on it suddenly notifies again, having like a 20 minute delay. Though I think it's just Steam not using the Google Push Notifications, and this might be impossible for you to fix.
Attempting sounds great! Sadly I think you'd need cooperation from Steam somehow, I don't suppose there's a clear API and messing around in decompiled code isn't exactly very structured .
The clear history option was requested by a friend, they wanted to batch-remove some histories, though I can't really see the point of it. Might be that they have a lot of messages from lots of people.
