I'm still fairly new to anroid I've had my phone for a while. Its rooted and I'm slowly removing the bloatware manually. My question is: is is ok to delete .dex files for an app that I'm removing or is it like deleting a dll? Basically I'm wondering if it will brick my phone. Thanks for the help!
If you are just trying to remove bloatware save yourself the trouble and download titanium backup root. It will automatically remove what you want it to. Don't mess with removing system apps unless you are sure they won't affect anything else, just do a search on these forums there is a list of system apps that are fine to remove. If you are trying to deodex the rom, the simplest way is to do it via dsxdia kitchen. You can find more info by just doing a search there are threads on both topics.

Hey. I did a search and didn't find an answer to this question. I just got my Inspire last week and am still working up the courage to root it since it is my only phone, and I don't want to brick it.
So in the meantime, how do I uninstall apps that I don't want/ need that are on the phone? Things like blockbuster and friendstream, and stocks? The phone wont let you uninstall them in application manager, and I tried creating a folder to move them out of the /system/app folder so they wouldn't run on restart, but it won't let you move them either. And, of course, since it isn't rooted yet, Titanium backup won't work either.
Is there a way to get rid of these apps that I don't want that are stock on the phone?

Thats why we root, my friend. Grab the hack kit and jump in. There are stock Roms that are rooted and already have the bloat removed. And then you can try some other Roms... lots of good stuff out there.

Hi - I 'm a new Transformer Pad owner and I really like it. I have a question about the preinstalled app MyLibrary. I am using it to organize my e-books (from Amazon) into folders as well as to note which books are 1st, 2nd, etc in a series. I took me hours and hours to do this so what I want to do is to back up what I've done in case something goes wrong and I have to restore the tablet. However, I can't find where the MyLibrary files are located in the file manager software and MyLibrary isn't located among the apps available for backup in App Backup. Does anyone know how I can back this up? Any help will be *greatly* appreciated. Thanks.
Its a system app and you have to back it up as such. I don't think you can back up system apps with the asus backup manager but you can use other backup apps like Titanium Backup
You need root, it is in /system/app

Thanks. How do I get root? What is it? Is it risky? I don't want to alter anything on the tablet to do the backup.
Think of rooting as jailbreaking it, you can use my One-click PERI tool, but that is definitely altering the tablet. (software not hardware)

You can do it on your computer by extracting it from the blob too.

Thanks for continuing to help. I don't need to open MyCloud first. MyLibrary is separate all by itself. Thanks for saying that you will try to find the .apk file but that won't accomplish what I'm trying to do. The thing is I put a lot of work in to organizing my books into folders and making comments on some books that are a part of a series. It's that part (all my changes) that I'm trying to back up in case I have to restore the tablet. How to you extract something from the blob via computer? Thanks.

You'd have to go through a hour process just to get that data, and it'd be impossible to restore without root anyway.
Sorry for the misunderstanding, I thought you wanted the apk.
Titanium backup is a good root app to do this though.

I apologize if this is the inappropriate forum since it's in regards to a single app. I'm brand new to Android and rooting in general. I have flashed by phone to Synergy ROM and wanted to restore my apps & data using TiBu. I had rooted my phone and set all my backups with TiBu, IMEI, and CMW. I did not remove any bloatware after rooting my phone as I was planning to rely on Synergy to debloat the phone. This is where I get confused...
If I restore my phone using the TiBu backup I made previously, will it REBLOAT my phone with all the CRAP that synergy had gotten rid of? AKA, do I need to debloat my phone before backing it up in order to restore without bloat?

You can pick and choose which apps to restore with titanium backup As far as freezing over uninstalling, freezing just well 'freezes' the app on your phone, it'll no longer show up in the app drawer or function at all, uninstalling will actually take it off your phone. By freezing you can defrost it at anytime if you encounter problems or need it. You freeze and uninstall per APK, in titanium you'll see all the apps you have installed both in your system memory and data memory (system apps, are usually more important and are installed with the rom) (data apps are anything you've manually installed) As far as restoring after installing synergy, you probably only backed up users apps before and therefore won't restore any system apps.
Titanium will restore only what you have backed up. Removing bloat or freezing it is up to the user. I personally freeze what I don't want. If you freeze something by accident you need you can always defrost it. If you have removed something you may have to reflash the ROM to get it back. If you do decide to remove apps you don't want I suggest you make a folder on your external card and move them there with a program like root explorer or silimilar. That way you can put them back if wanted or needed.

A) Why not back everything up, then uninstall what you don't want and if something breaks or you decide later you need it restore from backup? Freezing seemed great when I was brand new to the phone but now that i know I won't break things I just uninstall but do have a back up. I'm not arguing, I'm honestly asking if I'm missing some advanatge to freeze/unfreeze vs backup/uninstall/reinstall.
B) If I backup apps on my stock TW, ICS SGS3 and then flash to say a JB non-stock, non-TW ROM do I have a reasonable expectation that I can restore the apps and they will function? I'm imagining not.
Maybe I'm asking the wrong questions... How do I know what I can and cannot uninstall with TiBu?
Example: If I want to use the digital clock widget, but not the analog clock widgets, and I delete the analog clock widgets, will this cause a problem with the digital clock widget? I heard some items share .APKs somewhere I think?
How am I supposed to know which services/appcs/processes are necessary to run gmail, mms, sms, etc?
How am I supposed to know what, say, EnterprisePermissions1.0 is? and if I can delete it or not? I guess a guide to what apps are safe to freeze/uninstall might help, if one exists...Could anybody link me to one?
Basically, I want to get rid of as much crap as possible that's draining the battery or eating up CPU cycles, that I never intend to use.
I also noticed in TiBu that my "call log" and "SMS & MMS" backups aren't checked, and I cannot check them to restore them...Why would this be? It's kinda a big deal to me to bring back my call and message logs.

some questions before I root. all files on my Linux box are readable whether roor or not. Just can't modify unless root. I was reading files on android and they are locked down with encrypted looking stuff like when reading Windows files.

Well, you do know what you want, so rooting is probably your thing, and yes you can delete T-Mobile apps and services and other things you might want to remove, including Google apps. Just be careful and don't delete google services like GmsCore.apk, Contacts etc. Maps, Google+ and all that stuff are safe to remove.
Most apps are located in /system/apps, but there are also some apps in /data/apps. Be careful when you delete system apps, so you might want to install Recovery while you're at it so you can make a NAND backup (backup of your ROM) in case something goes wrong, or you want to return to stock once you're on a custom ROM.
I can't give you an answer on the rest of the questions, since some of them might be device specific things, so i don't want to tell you something wrong.

Well not sure EXACTLY what I want but basically I want a phone that acts lke a phone and not all the social media cruft and "ALWAYS ON" junk running in the background. And if I do need it I will turn it on and off myself.
