Desire S - Kernel / Radio / Hboot - HTC Desire S

My wife´s Desire S has the following combination:
S-Off, Rooted
Hboot 6.98.1002
Android 2.3.5
HTC Sense 3.5
ROM EngeryROM
Radio 20.4801.30.0822U_3822.10.08.04_M
Kernel 2.6.35.14-RCMIX-SAGA-V1-gf17016b-dirty
ClockWorkMod Recovery v5.0.2.0
Strangely enough it "hangs" now and then. Im not so familiar with the Desire S, unlike my own Sensation which I know very well if it comes to tweaking.
Is any of the above configuration not recommended? Some other suggestions maybe?
Thank you in advance!

Absolutely nothing wrong. I've noticed these kinds of problems usually come from not doing a full wipe. If you did then the only thing I could recommend is a different ROM, perhaps endymion?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium

Also, make sure you're not running overclocked (some ROMs have it set by default).

Thanks guys! Other ROM would be nice but haven't seen a full working ICS ROM for this device yet.
Don't know if it's overclocked, what is the stock CPU speed for Desire S? 1 GHz?

Yes 1 GHz. Just to clarify though, endymion is not ics and its highly recommended by everyone here. But official sense 3.6 is almost here so not long to wait now

What's the recommended procedure for this phone before flashing new ROM? For my Sensation, there's a SuperWipe zip file that clears all necessary for new ROM installation. Is that available for the Desire S?

I'd suggest that you have a read within the INDEX thread (see my signature) where you find a whole load of general guides that will get you started.
Easiest way to prepare phone before installing ROM I'd say would be to install 4ext recovery and use wipe all (except SD card) option, from within the wipe menu, and then flash ROM.

Not essential but you could change the revolutionary hboot your wife has at the moment for a eng hboot. Doing this makes it alot easier to return to stock s on if needed for any reason

If you mean do any of the ROMs come with 4EXT, no they don't, but they'll all work with it.
You need to flash the recovery 4EXT seperately to ROMS, easiest route is to use the app from the application from the market it's well worth paying for the version as you get quality support and regular updates.

As it seems it's the stock radio for 2.3.4, so it's simply the one that would have been installed when flashing the stock 2.3.4?

Normally the rom itself dosent include the required radio therefore u need to flash the radio urself...
For 2.3.4, its best to flash the stock radio compatiable for it...its the radio version in my sig anyway...

[Q] Sensation roms on Sensation XE

Hi guys, (possibly) noob question here, but I'm planning to get a HTC Sensation XE when it come out here.
I realize everything about the headset (other than looks and packaging) are the same as the original Sensation. The chipset are the same except clocked higher (which is probably on a software level from what I understand).
Therefore, when it comes to flashing ROMs, can I flash Sensation roms found in this forum into the Sensation XE without screwing it up?

That's not the question that was asked, and it's the same one I'm wondering. Can we (Sensation XE) users flash the ROMS from this section (Sensation ROMS) onto our phones?
There are plenty of topics around discussing whether the Sensation and the XE are identical hardware wise, but nobody has give a definitive "yes" answer yet.
Why don't you try and then report back? I'm pretty sure it will work.

do be honest i dont see it being a problem since when you look at the device it has the same, hardware only differences it is the overclocked chip which i do believe could be hardware, since the software has nothing to do with it. Personally when i had other devices in the pass i have always cross software with the same make and different models and they still work. If you are in still doubt just wait for a while but right now, alot of people are just using the non xe edtion and make it a XE, person i benchmark mine via the Manufacture version and there is no differents in performance...person i say it is a gimmick. Also the headphones are not that anyway, all the headphone dont is just justify the price increase....
Answer to thread starter, No not possible. Both the Sensation and Sensation XE are two different ROM. Even a simple Battery mod for the Sensation would not work on the XE and vice versa. So I don't think it would be possible to flash a Sensation Based ROM.
However RoMS for the Sensation which are based on XE can be given a shot, and let all of us know of the out come
Okay, but before I install any custom rom, i'd have to install cwm first right? Is the steps to do so the same as an ordinary sensation?
Guys, s-off your XE, install cwm, backup, install any sensation rom, if it doesn't work restore nandroid. What's difficult about that?

G'day champ,
Welcome back, begin with the guides provided below.
1. S-off, unlock, recovery, root & SuperCID
[Guide] to Installing S-off, Unlocking, ClockWork, Root, SuperCID & S-on
2. Install the latest firmware, 3.32 is needed for the latest base.
[Firmware][Mar 30]User-Friendly Firmware 1.17/3.12/3.24,3.30 & 3.32 Unlocked
3. Flash a ROM, Android Revolution HD(ARHD) is the most popular(for good reason)
[ROM] Android Revolution HD 6.5.5 | ICS | High Quality & Performance | 3.32.401.105
After all that, feel free to learn what you will, there's plenty to learn, it just requires reading, and problems, there's guides all over the Sensation forums, generally within the first couple of pages.
Thank you for all that. What is the firmware step for??

For what reasons exactly
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA
You can root without doing supercid. Supercid is optional.
It allows you more flexibility though. Useful if you want to flash other areas/carriers rom. Personally I prefer to keep original cid.
Recently I couldn't receive ota update to ICS because I was supercid, then reverted to the original one and suddenly I received the Ota update notice.
It's up to you whether supercid or not and it's not a real concern because you can revert at anytime.
What is your current hboot version? Power off, pull battery, press & hold vol down and power to enter bootloader and read it off.
You have to check your hboot is supported by revolutionary- the tool to give you s-off.
sent from HTC Pyramid using Tapatalk
And the OTA thing... Say i update my phone..will i lose root n such..
Thanks.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA
Yes you will lose everything and bootloader will become 1.27 (which is unsupported by revolutionary) Unless you have S-OFF before the update that is.
As for SuperCID, Its optional but HIGHLY recommended, As said before, it allows you to flash any firmware from any region....
If you dont have it, You MUST make sure it matches your CID or it wont boot... It can also be tricky to find one for your region (depending where you are)
It only takes a second, And its permanent and reversible
When i switch from rom to rom... Do i superwipe then flash rom everytime??
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using XDA
You can do, but its not necessary, Have a look at the installation guide for the ROM your going to flash.... Usually if you are updating the same ROM wipe isnt needed..
If you are going to a different ROM altogether, A wipe is a MUST

Rooting my sensation

I just bought a new sensation and I want to root it.so do I go to revolutionary.com and just follow the steps? Is the stock firmware 3.32 or do I need to update it to that?after I get the s-off for security then next do I install 4 ext touch recovery? Is that just a program that I download onto my sensation?and after that's done then can I go ahead and start putting.whatever Rom I want to use on my sensation.I do want to mess up my phone, etc.could someone help me out here alittle bit.and what are some of the biggest reasons why a phone gets bricked?and is it true a phone can always be unbricked? Thanks in advance...
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA
What is your Hboot version? First find out your Hboot version, then you
Can know exactly which method of rooting to use. Revolutionary uses specific h boot versions. So once you find that out then you can move forward using the correct guide. Hope this helps.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using xda premium
Thanks.after rooted how do I get 4 ext touch recovery on my phone is it just an app that I download?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA
Hey, don't jump to rooting right away.
You first need to S Off or unlock your bootloader.
Here are the appropriate guides for you:
How to flash ICS 3.32 firmware | flash/update ARHD 6.6.x ICS ROM
Flashing roms with S-ON and 1.2x HBOOT
These are guides for flashing ROMs, & your Hboot version is very important to determine which method will work for you.
For now, it should be sufficient to read through the guide.
Don't try to do it right away, read first, understand & then proceed.
Thanks for the information.I have my sensation unlocked s-off.so I'm go to install 4 ext recovery app correct.

Hi,
Going from 6.6.x to 6.7.x ,you are changing bases.
You need to wipe in recovery...
Format all partitions (except sd card)
Then install new ROM.
It will work with the 3.32. firmware, but you get the new radio with 3.33 firmware.

Could you left an information if you still believe to old firmware, because I have the same question and would like to reseive experiences.
In some cases is it better to go to next firmware, new radio better corresponding to new rom. So I am not sure to let old firmware worlk with the new rom.
Other question:
Is in the new firmware the bootloader locked ??? I hope not. So why do not upgrade to new firm ?
I found the firmware here

I have added a method found by mf2112 that allows the android-info file to have a wildcard tag. So instead of having a T-Mobile file where the android-info file has every cidnum the identifier is one entry into the android-info file and it covers every possible CID that T-Mobile has.

Not sure about the other firmware but use the universal as suggested because it does NOT change the boot or lock anything, I've upgraded my self to the 3.33 universal the one that won't lock or change boot. I've had zero issues and it has been wonderful . Make sure to READ before you install to be sure your downloading the correct version. You place the file at root of sd card, boot to downloader by taking battery out put battery back in, then press volume down and power at the same time. It will recognise the pg58img file and ask to update, press power for yes. Once the update is completed and rebooted. REMOVE the pg58img file! If you don't it will want to continue to update over and over inside the downloader, so delete the file soon as your finished. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

Hi,
"To briefly explain with a somewhat-less-than-accurate analogy for the purist, the radio you can flash is like a firmware package in Windows terms, and the RIL is like a driver. It is important to match them for best results, or else poor or no reception is likely, as well as high battery drain." (Quote from HERE )
The radio controls mobile data, wifi, basically all radio signals in the phone.
A good radio/ril combination is required for good reception, and even good battery usage in the area in which you live .
Check the link above to see if you can get more information.
