FP1 OTA coming - Verizon Droid Charge

And it gets a great big "meh" from me.
http://phandroid.com/2012/03/20/droid-charge-fp1-update-brings-verizon-remote-diagnostics-bug-fixes/

Woot
"...biggest change is the addition of the Verizon Remote Diagnostics app which will allow customer care representatives to better troubleshoot any problems you’re having with your device."
More bloat with the added benefit of the verizon nitwits rumaging around my customized system, yay!!

It looks like the FP1 radios might finally get rid of the squeal/click that some people are experiencing on their phones. That's a bonus, if nothing else, especially since it can most likely be ripped from stock and flashed separately.

Actually, if history is any indication, we'll have wait for a leak of the full firmware. The LTE radios can be extracted from the device, but the CDMA radios can't be dumped, and the update files from Verizon usually only contain the diffs/deltas. We ran into that with EP4D...it was a couple of weeks after the OTA before we had a flashable radio that didn't require you to be at stock EE4.
The only path on the radios at first is probably going to be flashing full stock, taking the OTA, then flashing an EP4 rom on top of them.

Can't wait for the fix for the cracking and popping issue.
It doesn't always happen, but when it does, my ears bleed.

Well - there was a workaround for such things if interested in only modem updating - assuming the same can be done here you'll just have to be on the EP4P radios for this one. That ought to save a little hassle anyway.

Yeah this update will make it totally worth the $10/mo.
As a side note, this may improve the GPS even more.

It's likely a modem+kernel update to fix the radio related issues. Given the reported size and the changelog, I'm wondering if they did completely retheme the system, as I don't see any reason for it to be 85MB for anything else.

It should be possible to remove. I am pretty sure nitro managed to do it in Eclipse.

i have lost all faith in samsung getting anything right on this phone so ill stick with my eclipse rom pbj kernel phone that actually works like it should as opposed another cluster of crap from samsung that is still in the end just another gb update.

yeah, i "found" a build of froyo numbered 13, and minus the wifi, bluetooth, camera, root, live wallpapers its a nice quick app! all the stuff i said is not working in this build, but it appears the makers are working on that stuff at an alarming pace, and later this week it will be going in full swing. Yes, in this version, Gapps works

This means don't buy any AT&T branded device. Hopefully sideloading happens with the Inspire. With hsupa now enabled and with this, I would lose more reason to root. Although getting rid of the bloat would be nice. I just wish we could root stock without having to downgrade.

If your phone is Stock rooted, you can always edit the settings.db file and enable side loading feature. I did it and works like a charm. I didn't want to take a chance with a custom ROM, so I updated the stock ROM with the latest HTC update and the rooted it with gingerbreak. So far so good.

try using titanium back up, that helps out alot, if u really don't wanna waste the 15min it takes to reset up ur phone, or just root it b4 setting it up, right after you buy it. sure, some rom updates will require a full wipe but its always for the better, there's just too many benefits to rooting not to want to do it. removing bloatware, ability to sideload, tethering, being able to run any of the many roms out there and the list goes on and on and on.

+1. If you're on AT&T, and have an Android phone, you are going to be missing out on all your phone could be. Even if you hack the living daylights out of a stock ROM, it won't compare to any ROM floating around here. It's not nearly as hard/bad as people think.

I sideload right on my Inspire. I have the apks on my card and choose them with any file explorer and install them. I can even install apps that require root to function. Those particular apps will install, but they won't work without root. But all apps that don't require root to function install and work just fine.
It figures... right after rooting. I like root though. I'm a control freak and I like to determine what is on my phone. Deleted all of ATTs bloarware and just darn well like playing with ROMS. I was a Linux distro sampler too for a while before settling on Fedora.

Did 2.3.5 cripple your tether?

I posted this in two other threads but both got ignored.
As soon as I updated to the 2.3.5, tethering seems to be no longer supported. The option is there, but as soon as I activate the tether, 3G goes away. I have to turn off the tether, then manually switch mobile data off and on just for my 3G to come back.
Is this their way of getting people to finally pay for it?
Yes.. one of the features of the update was removing tether if you were not paying for it. No biggie though... you have a Nexus.. just unlock it and download one of the apps off the market.

I am a little confused why Google allowed sprint to do this. Whether you you use the tether or not and regardless of how easy it is to get it back it doesn't sit well with me that Sprint is calling the shots with this phone now. One of the major appeals of this phone is the pure Google experience, which is now the partial Google experience. I wonder if this had anything to do with the delay of the OTA, maybe sprint was holding out until google let them kill the tether? Anyways, it doesn't instill a great amount of confidence in google for this phone and future nexus devices. I still like the phone and there is nothing on sprint I would rather have, I'm just a little pissed at how they tucked this into an update that was much anticipated and stripped some of our "pure googleness".
I don't understand this...i dont pay anything extra for tether, and i can still tether on stock 2.3.5. Why are some people unable?
i just flashed the new KE5 radio(found in the ns4g dev section), and im not seeing any issues. still on 2.3.4 tho.. i dont see any reasons to update to 2.3.5 especially if this is a problem. i tether wayyyy too much.

So I have a two day new Nexus S and I did the manual update last night. Now when activating the mobile hotspot the 3g or 4g icons go away and it does not have connectivity anymore.
Now, I have read conflicting info about whether this is happening just to those who did the manual update and if you did OTA it still works. Can anyone confirm this?
If that is the case, then I need to return this one and get another and just be more patient next time to get the update officially OTA. =)
Not that I am tremendously worried about the tethering/hotspot being free, but I am uneasy that doing this manually may have screwed things up in as of yet other unknown ways. Like if I do pay for hotspot/tethering someday it might still not work right, etc.
Thanks!

Did you manually update or did you wait for it to be pushed to your phone? I'm stock and wasn't rooted and I manually updated and my tethering both usb and wifi hotspots are not working.
Also I notice in the kernel version that it's longer than when I was on 2.3.4 mine says 2.6.35.7-g3cc95e3 [email protected] #1

This is a Verizon only issue that NEEDS to be fixed. It is bull that Verizon wasted time locking down the bootloader that they screwed up their device... but to people who live in one of the "dead zones" the phone is all but useless as anything except a music player. Just because it's not an issue you have suffered doesn't mean it's not a necessary and needed fix.

The NO SIM error is ridiculous, and I am glad this will fix it. For those who don't know, some people can hardly use their S3 at times. I've had instances where every time I try to send a text for 20-30 minutes, it says sending, I lose all connections (no network at all) for a minute or two, then it reconnects, rinse, repeat. This happens when trying to send texts AND making a phone call. Imagine if you had an emergency and every time you tried to call your network dropped for 2 minutes.
But I don't know what else this will do to the phone. Disable current root methods? Bootloader issues?

Yes, many of us have the same issues, even in great 4G areas like DC. No new sim card or handset replacement would ever fix it. Took long enough for VZW to release this fix.
As usual if you are rooted/unlocked/running a ROM do NOT download the OTA update. Wait less than 24 hours for someone on the forums to debloat and flash manually. Obviously if you are stock, rooted, and locked go ahead and take the update VZW pushes out.

I had this no sim error only in a few places around my home area... but one of those areas included my house. Two new sim cards and two new S3s later, I am extremely happy to hear about this fix! Oddly enough, I never got a no sim error here on a 2 week business trip to Utah.
Had to manually load the update tho, now all is well! Thx for the tip!

Hrmph. I buy and sell a lot using the ebay app. The update killed the app.
Just got the update pushed to my phone. Deferred until we find out if the new version is rootable/unlockable.

Yeah - I love the samsungs but for some reason they don't work as well as other phones on the Verizon network. If I only used a few hundred minutes per month, I might not notice however I spend about 2-3 thousand minutes per month on the phone so I'm VERY aware of when a phone has a radio issue.
im shocked i haven't seen anything posted about this update anywhere but this thread.

I believe he was being sarcastic because EVERY time something hits the news about our device twenty different people come here and start twenty different threads about the topic. So far this is the only one...so far.
Is this out yet or just coming... I run synergy and can't take ota updates.. Anyone have this pulled out yet

With every OTA the question is the same - could this possibly lock the bootloader again? This looks like it's just an updated gmail and play store apk, wonder why its 62MB in size.
is allshare cast enabled now under more settings?

It just says 'email' not 'Gmail'. We wouldn't get an update to Gmail from Verizon, we'd get it from the play store. Or the leaked one that's kicking around the forums.

The no SIM problem I wouldn't think would be a software issue considering it doesn't affect all the phones. There are many many people who do not have this issue. I'm actually pretty sure I read something a while ago that said the SIM cards they are making are crappy quality, therefor that could be the culprit. I dunno tho for sure.
I don't know about that. That is something I have been thinking about lately..... I have been having a problem with my phones service, I live in a strong 3g and 4g area, and after I rooted both of my GS3's they started dropping service left and right where before they hadn't. The more I have read about the no sim issue the more it sounds just like my service dropping problem just without the no sim message appearing for me. So I wonder if more of the phone have it than we think and we think the terrible service is because of the radios when in all actuality its the no sim error and it just doesn't pop up the no sim message..... yes I know Samsung radios are crap on Verizon but I have plenty more Samsung phones that have never had any service issue whatsoever, whereas this phone you have to hold you head a certain way with both your arms stretched out and your tongue touching your nose just to send a message.

You need a new sim card. Many people have had this problem. I'm not sure if the OTA has come out yet?
Running stock and it's not available for me yet

I'm running the HD, so this new HE must be like one build newer I would guess.
I wonder if people running HD will receive the OTA to HE, or just those running F2, G1 and G7.
