[Q] LG G2X 2.3.3 stock wants to root and get Great Camera. Is it possible? - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hi everyone.
I am peekaypee from San Diego and like very much my stock 2.3.3 LG G2X except for one thing: The camera!
I never had Froyo, but heard from others that it was far superior to the stock Gingerbread camera app I am using. I have tried all the camera apps from the Market and none of them correct my biggest complaint: Poor pic quality in lowlight. I can't hardly see the picture. I have seen other people use their stock android camera and it will shoot pics much brighter not using the flash too. I have adjusted the exposure to plus 3 and it looks a tiny bit lighter, but then darkens after shot. Overall it's still super dark.
Am I being realistic to think the LG stock camera app or something else modded will work better?
Any help from experienced users is greatly appreciated.
Again, thanks for all you do as I find all the posts interesting and informative.
Sincerely peekaypee in SD.

You're saying you want a better than 8MP camera?
The camera wasn't much better on Froyo, just the interface was nicer.

Give uCam a try.

LG Cam 3.0 is the original LG Froyo cam tweaked to work with OTA Gingerbread based ROMs

Thanks for your replys back to my question about the g2x stock camera being
Hey spyvie, does this LGv3.0 camera app take decent pics in lowlight? That is my biggest problem with the stock one.
Also, Is that rom hard to load? I guess I would need to root first but am willing to give it a try. Is there some real simple, straightforward steps to rooting and installing your recommended rom and the LG camera app?
Thanks a million to all of you!

Features Missing on G2X?

Hi..
I just got an LG G2X with GB 2.3.3 update installed stock.
1. I've noticed the 1080p/24fps option is missing on the video camera settings.
2. The touch focus is not working either. It's supposed to focus while recording video and you touch the screen.
I bought the phone because of these features, so Im very disappointed they are not included. Any ideas.
All those features were present with Froyo. So what you really want is the LG camera app. After the Gingerbread update it was replaced by the Google camera app.
But you can flash your phone with Weapon G2X 2.5 which has the LG camera app included.

Why would LG do that? I mean, why put a rom which disables the features that give value to the phone such as 1080p video?....Not only that, like I mentioned before, I bought the phone for the features and now what?..
That means that a person that doesn't know how to flash a different ROM is screwed...so they end up returning the phone...this is really bad business... If LG needed to flash a new ROM to fix all bugs, they shouldve given us a complete ROM which would have all the features the phone has.
i dont want to go install the old rom due to all the bugs it has. So, in other words.. this phone is most likely going back.

I know, I would be dissapointed as well.
What you can do is either what the previous poster said or you could flash a Froyo ROM which would have all the features that you bought this phone for.
If you need help PM me and I could help you flashing your phone and doing all those good things

Well.. I know how to flash roms.. I just need to know where I can find them and which ones have the least bugs..I would appreciate it if you can tell me where to find them.
I just dont want to flash an old rom which is the reason LG had to update the G2X due to all the bugs froyo has.
..thanks.

I felt the same way you do after i did the Gingerbread update.
But here's the link to the ROM you'd be interested to: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1207125
It's an AWESOME ROM!
Match it with this Kernel and you have a pretty nice handset:

Thanks dude... do you know anything about recording 1080p/30 fps on the g2x... someone told me that somewhere in xda there is something about it?
And how come you have 2.3.5 CM7 nightly..is that better?
With the Gingerbread google camera it already allows you to record in 1080p HD 30/fps its just not showed as 1080p.
I like the CM7 2.3.5 only because i think it's a more stable ROM..but you won't be able to flash the LG camera app. For some reason the LG Camera app is not compatible with 2.3.5 or CM7 base ROMs.
But i'm actually now running Eaglesblood 2.3.5 which is a CM7 base...so i have the best of both worlds.

what about touch focus?... does it work with your rom.. like.. when you're recording and you touch the screen does it focus on a close object?
also...
what about Netflix..does it work properly for you.. It plays for me but fast speed.
And there are some really cool themes for the weapon rom in the themes section, or follow my sig.

Touch focus on video doesn't work for me but it does for camera. And honestly i have no complains except that i don't have a choice of storage..whether to SD or Internal.
Haven't really tried Netflix yet...but i will.
And just like what mmapcpro said...Weapon has some pretty sick themes.
I get a black screen after flashing the kernel..it wont boot up... I wiped cache. any ideas?

I also noticed it is missing a portable kegerator with some type of high speed low drag sup-space link to an endless supply of Sam Adams. Oh well guess we can't win them all

[Q] Front camera very dark!!

I've been running CM7, MIUI and Weapon for a while, but i've noticed that the front camera gets REALLY dark, but only if i'am in a dark place, I know that sounds stupid, but when I flashed 2.2.2 or 2.3.4 the pictures with FFC becames MUCH more clear and with more light in the same place!!
One more thing, did anybody notice that the led flash in 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 do like 3 flashes and takes more time to shoot??
Is there a way to fix any of this bugs? I prefer the MIUI camera over the 2.3.4 camera but it's MUCH more darker when I don't have much light in the ambient.
Thanks in advance, sorry for beeing noob....
Please, nobody can tell me if this is a issue with just me, or, if everybody is having it??
And if there is a way to fix it...
I haven't seen any one with this issue, I don't use the front facing camera myself. My only guess would be to try the Bravia mod, maybe it can take care of the issue.

I now this could seem stupid, but is the glass over the camera clean? That can effect light exposure. Also if you are using the MIUI Camera is the brightness setting at low?
The back camera it's very good actually, the only problem is the front, I usually use to chat with my girl while i'am in the computer (as I don't have a webcam I use the g2x), the ambient where i'am is little dark, just have the light of computer, but when I use the 2.3.4 version the video chat gets REALLY clear and good, but with MIUI and CM7 the video chat becomes very dark (camera too).. :/ thats sucks because I like MIUI over all roms but the front camera gets reeeeeally dark in some places....
Please guys help me, I use front camera all the time :// really that no one is having the problems I'am having?
What I think it's weird is that the official 2.3 front camera is very dark in ambients with little light....anyone know how to fix it?
Just 2.2 and 2.3.4 don't have that bug.

I think that is because 2.2 is using the LG Cam interface which is a lot better than the 2.3.3 stock software. There is not fix at this time.

Thanks for the tips, guys, but the problem still here... I really don't know what the causes, and it's not the lg cam, because when I use 2.3.4 I have really good light in front camera even with the aosp camera, I'm gonna keep using miui and just deal with the problem, cause miui > all (for me)

Again it is built into the software of the Gingerbread 2.3.3 version only. It can not be fixed, it has been tried but will not work. Froyo 2.2 and Gingerbread 2.3.4 use different cam software even though they are stock aosp on 2.3.4.
Thanks man, gonna try to deal with this for a while, cause I thinks the back camera in 2.3.4 it's very dark, so I'm just use my miui and be happy

Camera apps for CM9?

I was wondering if anyone's found a good camera app for use with CM9? The stock app... gets the job done, but its a bit lacking when compared with the stock app. Specifically, I miss auto focus and face detection.
I've installed ucam, and have been playing with that. It's got autofocus and a ton of features, but I'm not sure how well it stacks up against other solutions.
Anyone else have any suggestions/recommendations?

LG Camera, it's pretty OK. Takes better pics than the CM9 camera, but can be slow.

Froyo Camera in ICS?

So, I recently flashed up to Android 4.0.4 from 2.2, and all is well, except I liked the previous system Camera app more. More settings, more digital zoom, et cetera, et cetera. I just want my old camera back. I was happier.
I did some searching, and found out that people think it would be difficult to do (would take some decompiling and such) and still may not work, but as far as I can tell, no one's actually tried.
Does anyone have any more information for me on how to go about getting the Froyo camera on ICS? I can get a hold of the two camera APKs. I just don't know what to do from there. Someone dropped a big hint in this thread, but that's still not enough information for me to go and try this myself if no one has already.
Thanks for your help in advance.
Have you tried any free camera apps from the Play store to see if they might fill your need?
It would be extremely difficult as it has twframework dependencies...something that is not available on any aosp/aokp rom...I'm not saying its impossible but it would take an experienced app and/or moder to get the job done...it would be cool to have a stock like ics rom but unfortunately there is no source for that...only for aosp...I've tried porting stock Samsung Roms in the past but was never really successful I think one time I got one to boot but after days of constant work I didn't get any farther...it was unuseable cause everything would force close...most likely due to missing libs that we don't have available
Also...they are system apks from two different os so compatibility will also play a roll in it

I was afraid it was as difficult as I've been reading. Sounds like so.
The biggest thing I miss is the zoom. With 4x zoom, even though just digital, I was able to take macro shots of textbooks all the time. I just bought (and returned)... what was it called, Camera Zoom FX. It did give me 6x zoom as promised, but it couldn't autofocus whatsoever.
The camera in this phone is capable of doing what I did most with it, taking photos of texts. But it seems the only app that allowed it to do so was on Froyo.
Do you think there'd be a way to hack the ICS camera app to supply more zoom?

Sure, there's always a way...how difficult and how to do it is something that I do not know unfortunately...like I said earlier its probably gonna take an expiernced apk developer

Same thinking regarding porting 4.0.3 Camera as in Karbon A18 to my Micromax A100 Canvas which is having 4.0.4 ICS .The 4.0.3 have good autofocus and facedetection but the 4.0.4 is stock dumb crap. looking forward with you..

This is sort of a half baked answer because I'm on a stock ROM, but of the many camera apps I've tried on the stock ROM, this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.almalence.opencam has the best quality for still shots amoungst those that have panorama support, that I have found so far. I have not tested panorama yet. Its most likely that I picked it up on a free app of the day account.
Another one that does not have panorama but that is very good for still shots, the best one I've seen and is free, is this one https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lightbox.android.camera which I mention just because the quality is very good and when I've been on non stock builds in the past the camera has been the thing that has always brought me back to stock.
Hopefully the current cyanogen camera is of good quality, and its quite possible that the ones I mentioned front end the stock camera rather than hooking into it at a lower level. Its worth a quick try with the first one though; 15 minutes trial isn't much for a camera app trial but its a better offer than what those other phones have
Agreed ABC is the best camera app I have used photo quality is great.
