Hello, I am new to the smartphone world and I have been reading threads on here for a few days and decided to join since I got a infuse. I have ATT. and I dont understand how to download themes from this site to my phone. I am sorry if this has been asked before but I have no idea how this thing even works. Its funny when the Iphone came out I was all over it and loved it and then switched to a blackberry, now with this phone I feel like I am in the dark. Thanks in advance for any help and advice.

SENT FROM MY AEON ROCKIN INFUSE
Thank you. I read that and I still have no idea what that stuff is. I just want a different theme, and I thought I could find it in the market but its only wallpapers. or am I missing something?
If your just wanting a theme download go launcher from the play store and then download themes for it.
In market/Google Play download Go launcher or AWD launcher to change main themes. I prefer AWD myself more things to tweek in settings. Once downloaded you can search the market for premade themes or create your own with a plugin for Go
If you want to change things like contact themes or dialers, I use Go contacts Ex. Same for SMS layout. Go has a Go SMS Ex and Go keyboard. All ive metioned are fully customizable and free. But some premade themes are pay
Hope this helps to get you started

Another Idea ...this is what I did before taking the plunge into these awesome custom ROMs,
YOUTUBE, do a search there for Samsung Infuse and themes for the android 2.3, you can get a great idea and some videos post the links to the market...
Just a idea, that's what I did...
BTW welcome....
Short Explanation
I'll try to keep this simple since I was a newbie recently lol
ROM - basically all the software on your phone, your entire OS, since you have ATT, you have:
stock ROM (unchanged), Android 2.2 Froyo (OS name)
Kernel - the drivers to make the hardware and software click, you have:
stock kernel (unchanged)
Developers edit stock ROMS and tweak them and release them for eveyone to use. Often, they release themes for them. To change your ROM, you have to:
-root (get administrative access, jailbreak for Android)
-get recovery (where you can flash ROMS, kernels and stuff) (flashing is another way to say installing)
-download a ROM, follow instructions and flash (install)
-download a theme FOR THAT ROM, follow instructions and flash (install)
If im missing something, let me know people thnkz

I have had very good results with the GO EX Launcher. There are all kinds of add-ons and themes you can get for free (tons more paid). You can also download an app called Zedge that will help you select wallpapers, sounds, and ringtones for free to finish it off. Enjoy!

You berate yourself incorrectly because it looks to me you're not people like that. You've investigated and searched and researched. Zip-Roms like this compound the issue of people not bothering to do any of that.
I'm more than happy to help people. When they help themselves first. I'm sick and tired of people who can't use the search function, and asking what OJ means, or whether you can stick the Sense camera on an AOSP Rom. Not reading posts properly and thinking S-OFF is some magical system that does anything exept full R/W access. People like THAT is who that comment was directed at.

I don't see peterfeter has any bad intention, he gave full credit to Neophyte.x360 and he merely shares the things he did.
While he's not a real developer who knows a lot of things, I've checked the forum rule and apparently he did nothing wrong to violate any of the rule. So I don't understand why he deserves such bashing.

bashing this guy sucks
i agree with others on this thread. dont bash this guy. what actual harm has he done. he's not made any untrue claims and if anything he's inspired untechnical people like myself to have a little delve beneath the surface. I may have a look at this rom myself and do a MOD.
This has inspired me to try some editing myself. But without luck, so if you do a zipmod, you just add or remove files from data/app/ and system/app/ ? Is that all? Been trying but I get an error everytime I try saying that a file is missing. Are there a list of files + directories that i verifys with before installing? Been searching the web for answers but I only found guides on how to make a ROM from the start.

I know its a little bit heavy, but to mod ROMs I always use
[KITCHEN][OCT. 3 '10] HTC Android Kitchen, v0.100 [Linux / Mac / Windows]
The kitchen will unzip the ROM you want to mod, you change/remove/add what you want. You can sign new apk files, zipalign the apps and create a flashable ROM.
EDIT:
And thanks to peterfeter to publish his ROM. Ignore the jealous ignorant people posting bad things in your thread. You have done a good job and it is good that you share it. I plan to release my mods soon as well. It will be a mod of an existing ROM with some special apps and settings for Japan/Softbank users.
Thanks alot BeeGee! I will try it out!
Hi -
I just purchased a new Captivate...mint condition. It's still on 2.1.
I'm interested to just getting it updated to the official 2.2 software release. However, at the same time I plan to spend several days studying how to root and installing custom roms.
My question is if I install the official 2.2 update then would I still be able to apply custom roms. I learned the hard way that once 2.2 was applied to the HTC Aria, rooting was out of the question.
Anyway, thanks everyone. By the way, I came from the 3GS. Captivate is really a nice change.
Thanks.
The search function is your friend. Use it.
Okay. Sorry to have asked.
Don't be sorry. I understand, but there are a ton of threads that show how to do everything.
Don't update to the stock 2.2 cause it will give you the new 3e recovery issue.
Just flash to a custom 2.2 custom rom.
Thanks all. I used Android about 1 year ago, but then jumped to the dark side. Trying to pick up a few things again.
A wealth of active information over here. Great to see!
Stock 2.2 is no problem to root / whatever you want to do.
Go to the Developer section of these forums and you'll find all the info you want.
Basically the general idea is this:
The program that can flash these phones directly is available (Odin 1.3)
Therefore you can always do what you want. the 2e recovery is technically easier to root, but gaining this back is as simple as downloading a 6mb kernel and flashing with Odin, and poof you are in Clockwork mod and can do what you want.
Basically, upgrade away, you're never stuck with a captivate provided you dont screw up the boot or sbl. (Search those for explanation)

if you definitely plan on installing a custom rom, i'd stay on stock eclair. I recently installed Serendipity 6.2 (my first custom rom), and it required an ODIN back to stock 2.1 (unfortunately i had updated to stock froyo). i'm not sure if all roms require this, but it certainly would have saved a few steps if i was on stock eclair. nothing really exciting in stock froyo, especially if you plan on going the custom rom route anyway.
also, i highly recommend Serendipity (now 6.3)
Thanks for the replies.
I was able to root cand flash a custom rom - firefly last night. It's really fun to be back in the game again. Can't say I miss the iPhone so far, but we'll see.
Thanks.
I was disappointed with official the froyo update. Custom roms are much better than stock. You'll also gain a deeper appreciation for what the devs do.

the new user guide (that i wrote) teaches about stickies! and where to find them!
find the stickies in the captivate general, q&a and dev forums they have all the answers you are looking for and way more.
go. read. learn.
this is really basic stuff. At&t does not like you installing apps not from the market "its called side loading" you need to be rooted to fix it and there are pleanty of guides "one click root has an option to enable non market apps" to get a different rom go to the dev sectoin chose a rom and follow the simple directions or for a guide for the entire process http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884364
Assuming what you meant was that you want ATT's crap taken off and a new ROM...
Why would you not want your device rooted? If voiding your warranty is a concern it's fine, there are plenty of methods to return back to stock Eclair/Froyo. And there really isn't a ROM out there that's head and shoulders over the rest, you're going to have to play around and see which one you like the feel of the best. Try out a different ROM every couple of days and see how you like it.

If you are asking someone to help you build a rom well... I don't think that will happen. You can go to samfirmwares.com and download a stock i9000 rom, but without root you, and if you don't know how to build to incorporate the home button and haptic feedback fixes, your phone won't work right. My suggestion is to go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=948790
They are all stock i9000 roms with only busybox and root installed. I'm using the stock jvh on my captivate, at the moment, and it works great. You will have to deal with root. It's better to be rooted anyway.

Only replying to that small part of your post, and correcting you by saying no, you don't need to be rooted to sideload applications. SWM (Sideload Wonder Machine) can do it so long as you have the drivers installed and USB Debugging on. I installed several applications as soon as I got the phone, long before I ever rooted my phone, much less installed a custom ROM on it.

Why didn't you use google? There are plenty of places that explain how to root that aren't on this site, which is more an "advanced" place anyways(I use that term loosely, but I get the idea that people here assume you know a little about your phone).
Check out MobileTechVideos, the guy who does those had a three-part, in-depth ROM flash set of videos that explain exactly how to use One-Click to Root.
Edit:

"How did you begin?"
A question that is in every Begginer mind like me...
it makes every one wonder very much like:
-How can I design my own custom rom?
-How can I start developing android apps?
So please every developer or an experienced android developer reply writing a way to start or begin something like this..
Thanks in advance for any help..
there are many guides on this forum that teach you how to start creating your own roms , especially for android. I believe most people start by taking a base rooted rom, and tweaking it with different mods to make it their own. In fact many of the "developers" here do just that. Take a base and mod it, or take someone elses base, like CM7 and start playing with it. Look around...
I suggest the same. Just take a base rom and extract it. Have a look at the source and try a few tweaks, add some apps to your rom, try to insert a new theme. Just play around a bit. You will face some "problems" which can be solved by using google. That is called learning I guess
App development: Start learning java and then download eclipse with android sdk and launch your first emulator.
And always have fun with android!

Since Im a complete newbie I wanted to ask a few questions before doing anything stupid.
1. I noticed people are already posting new ROMs and kernels. Do I need them? I mean, I like the stock and everything but there are a few things I can't do. Why do YOU root and change ROMs?
2. I found a lot of kernels, and I understood that it can improve my performance and battery life. I would very much like to improve my battery life. The thing is, I don't know how. I do know that people are UVing and OCing their CPU, etc but what can a noob do who is not only a noob but also just bought a phone that the rooting thing is new to it. So no everything is fully developed, optimized and ready to go in a few clicks. Do I still need to wait a couple more weeks to change my kernel? I always read kernel threads and their changelogs but it is like jibarish to me. I can't even decide which one to pick.
3. I would really like to change my icons in the quick settings panel. Am I able to do that? How?
4. I tried setting Hebrew as my default language but that just moves the whole interface left. Because in Hebrew we write right to left. It wasn't like this when I had my GS3. I used a few CM Roms on my s3 and they were fine until the update to 4.3. Then it did the same thing on the S3 but I didn't know it would be like this on the N5. Is it something that can be fixed? Can I email Google or call them about this?
5. Is there anyone who is willing to recommend personally some ROMs, mods, apps or any modifications at all?
Thank you in advance!

1 & 2 - I recommend reading the FAQ first, stickied at the top of this Q&A Section. This should give you a good starting knowledge
3 - would need an AOSP based ROM with this feature (CM / AOKP perhaps?)
4 - sorry, can't help
5 - No. This is against what XDA stands for. Read "No best rom threads" sticky in this forum.
1. All your answers can be found here for why you should root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2510966 or http://lifehacker.com/top-10-reasons-to-root-your-android-phone-1079161983
2. Franco Kernel is very friendly to use and once rooted everything can be done from his paid google play app. check it out
3. Once rooted and with customer rom installed like cyanogenmod or paranoid android the themes you download from the google play store will sometimes change the settings icons too
4. i believe cyanogen mod roms have a good hebrew compatibility
5. Just start off very simply. use the cyanogenmod installer from the playstore and wait for the nexus 5 to become compatible. wait for the device to get into more peoples hands and youll see an influx of great roms and mods
good luck and welcome to the nexus community.

2. Franco Kernel is very friendly to use and once rooted everything can be done from his paid google play app. check it out

Thank you for your comments.
Kinda hard to decide wether to flash a different ROM or not. Hell, I haven't even rooted my device because I got it 7 hours ago
I'll be rooting it for sure, but I guess I'll wait a bit till CM or PA will come out. What did you guys install?

My choice was to stay with Stock ROM. I am new to Nexus devices so I wanted to see the subtleties between stock and AOSP.
That said, De-odexed roms are easier to modifiy so I flashed one of those

How are they easier to modify? I mean, how does it come to use? Can you give me an example?
Also, I see you wrote your ROM, kernel and UVing settings in your signature. How is your battery life?

Since Im a complete newbie I wanted to ask a few questions before doing anything stupid.
Thank you in advance!

Go to settings > About > tap build version 10 times to enable developer options.
Go in to developer options and you can change the screen alignment.
I second the FAQ at the top of this forum. Incredibly helpful and informative for anyone new to rooting. That should have everything you need, but I guess if I were to add anything to what the above guys (or girls) said, it would be to root FIRST before playing around with your N5 too much. Not sure if it's really obvious or not yet, but the rooting process will result in wiping your device, so it's generally recommended to get that out of the way.
That being said, once you're rooted, I can't recommend Titanium Backup enough for making sure all your stuff is available after any future ROM changes.
Lastly, welcome to the Nexus family =) Glad to have ya

thank! yea I watched a couple of videos and tutorials about rooting. I'll use Chainfire's tool that unlocks the BL + roots the device.
I'll stick to stock in the meanwhile, I'll just install Franco Kernel.

Its just easier. Every system app has an .odex file too that requires extra modification by a themer / developer. Deodexed systems don't need that
