(Q) Force 3G only? - T-Mobile myTouch 4G Slide

Is it possible to force 3G only on our device? Maybe an app or a command? Btw I'm using pyroice desensed. I found 2g only but would prefer a 3g. Any information would be much appreciated.

Go to settings, choose Mobile Network, select Access Point type, change it from GSM/WCDMA to WCDMA Only.
Give it a try. You may end up loosing signal depending on your location. There may also be a keypad code to type in as an alternate.
Hastily spouted for your befuddlement.

Pretty sure its not possible GSM/WCDMA only. I tried when I first got my phone.. if you go into the hidden menu as well and try changing to just CDMA it always reverts back to 3g/4g.

Force 4g

Is it possible to force 4g?
I can get 2 bars at my work, but it keeps switching to edge.
The way to fix this on my nexus one was to use the *#*# code.
What is the *#*# code for this phone?
Sent from my LG-P999
Do you mean the *#*#4636#*#*
That will take you to a menu and you can choose phone info with a selection for like gsm wcdma and what not. Is that what you want?
Perfect!
I couldn't remember that code for the life of me!

Can't you just go to Settings -> Wireless -> Mobile Networks -> Network mode -> WCDMA only?
I've done that and it's always on 4G or nothing.
Seems like you can't do it on stock android phones but only phones with sense....*#*#4636#*#* works for this phone

Help. Turn off 3g/4g not working?

I dial *#*#4636#*#*, click GSM only, and it goes back to H in a matter of seconds.
Any way to keep it on Edge and not have it go back to 3g?
I'd like to know as well

Technically they are the same... the only way you can switch is going down to 2g

That's what I'm trying to do. I'm clicking GSM only, which puts you on 2g, but it switches back to 3g/4g quickly.
@OP and others:
Select "2G only" in network settings
Then go to "select network", then "manual", do a search, and select network from there.
Now it will stick to EDGE.
BUT: This would mean at some places, though rare, u could experience signal loss. Be warned.

GSM =\= 2G only. It is staying on HSPA because the GSM signal in your area carries HSPA data access. Plain and simple.

NOTE: No service with WCDMA only

If you have wcdma only selected and the area that you are in is not 4g you will not have service.

It would be nice to be able to set the 4g to 2g threshold settings. At my work if I forget to manually switch to 2g, my phone stays on 4g (it still finds a weak signal so it doesn't switch to 2g) and I miss all calls, emails, sms....
Just to confirm, there is no way to tell the g2x when it should switch from 4g to 2g right?

There are apps like Tasker that allow you to set things depending on your GPS location or times of the day. I don't know if it specifically lets you set when your phone goes from 2G/4G but I think it does.

Right I was thinking about that. What I ment was switch from 4g to 2g based on signal strength. I'm sure there is some kind of a limit in place to know when to make the switch. It would be nice to be able to modify this.

Not sure about a way to manually set the thresholds but there is one setting you can change that's supposed to require a stronger WCDMA signal before it switches from 2G. On your dialer, dial *#*#4636#*#* and go to Phone Information. Scroll down to "Set preferred network type" and select "WCDMA and GSM Auto" with the stock rom. I think with CM its called something like GSM Auto PRL.
The difference from WCDMA is that Auto requires a higher signal strength threshold to use switch to 4G. Not sure what those thresholds are and I haven't noticed much difference but I have pretty good signal everywhere I go.
It.wouldn't hurt to try it though.

How do you actually save that setting?
Oh and a better shortcut to that menu is download anycut from the market, add shortcut to desktop using that program and tap activity then look for testing.

The setting should stick until you change it again. Is it changing automatically on yours?
I changed the settings a few times when I close the setting it always saves the setting I picked.
Is it supposed to save these setting after a reboot or when turn the phone off.
I noticed while on WI-FI it's always on GSM

idk with wifi on still, i still have 4g lte option, with data offline, i still have 4g icon but no data lol..

Shame on all of you for discovering this !!! AT&T DOES not want LTE folks selecting HSPA+ when in an LTE area. They want to be able charge you more for data!!!

Would be even cooler if it was a widget to do this.
But still, how does this save money? If you use the data you're gonna use it. Downloading an e-mail uses the same amount of data no matter how fast you get it.
I am curious though that if this helps save battery if you know you're in an area with spotty coverage...Maybe it won't be hunting for LTE when you know there is no LTE, which could save battery maybe?
I sill have poor performance inside my apartment. So weird. It says 4G and even 4G LTE sometimes but I don't have internet. I just turned on the WiFi ... but still, calls with static (though they work) and my wife never had these issues on her iPhone. Really disappointed but fortunately the issue goes away when I'm actually mobile. I wonder if I switch to a different setting if it will improve indoors or not. --edit-- THIS indoor setting, not all "indoors"
This does not work, guys. It didn't work on the GS2 either. It defaults back to an LTE option every single time. If you are in an HSPA area, you may THINK it is working because your connection remains HSPA, but I assure you that it is not working.
In an LTE area, I stay in LTE, no matter how many times I try to switch to HSPA using this method.
Just set up a HSPA APN and make that the default. Then you will only be on HSPA untill you change it back to the LTE APN

Is there a HowTo on this?
Those sneaky bastards. They are found a way to auto change it back to AT&T default for the GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto selection. No matter what I select it defaults back.
AT&T Got creative on restricting this phone those a**holes.
From my understanding the S4 chipset on the One X is integrated with LTE so there is a lot less power drain that other chipsets with LTE. It might not be possible to turn it off if they're both working on the same radio. Or even if you do manage to turn it off, there might not be as big of a battery performance boost as with other LTE devices.

that doesn't really help too much. what's your screen on time? i got around 3hrs yesterday. still calibrating my battery though. seems to be lasting me about a day (12hrs +/-) with LTE always on which is great imo.

does h/h+ drain battery more so than 4g lte?

It seems when I'm in a different area and I get h/h+/3g that my battery drains more than when I'm at home using 4g? Why is that? Or am I just crazy...
It's probably because when you're out and about the phone is searching for a signal. That uses a lot of juice.

+1, when the phone is not on 4G (LTE) it is constantly looking for 4G, if you are able to change your radio mode to WCDMA via the CM settings (if you are on CM10) theoretically, it should not continue to search for 4G. I don't have the experience to see that this is the case (battery savings)
Oh so the culprit is searching not the signal itself! Ah well thanks guys! I appreciate it!
I've been trying these steps from another post but it won't work with slim bean

That depends on the radio. ATT radios are RAT locked so that doesn't work. Also USSD codes don't seem to work on AOSP based ROMs.
Thanks to csschmit I spelled it wrong but can't find the post.
I do the toggle from Settings > More > Mobile Networks > Network Mode and change it to GSM/WCDMA and it will force HSPA.
If that doesn't stick, and immediately switches back to LTE, click Network Operators and it may take a long time for the search to complete, if it completes and you don't see AT&T try again over and over until it does. Once you finally see AT&T, click it and it will say "Registered on Network" and the toggle will now work. Even the "use 2g to save battery" will work.
It takes a long time for me to get AT&T to show but you only have to do it once per reboot provided you don't toggle Airplane mode.

Thanks for info too! When you check 2G only, is that only edge? Do you get 3g,hspa,hspa+?
In other words what I'm asking is, should I even check the box for 2G? Where i live constantly changes from H toH+ to 4G. Rather just stick with H+ and lower and conserve that battery

2g is only edge, you will not get higher speeds when it is checked, and supposedly has the best power savings, you can always have data off until needed which would be the best battery saver
