[Q] nexus s 4g rooting help/problem - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have read post on how to root and I can root. But my problem is my nexus will not connect to my computer. I get a unknown device error. Pdanet didn't work and I've tried 2 computers and multiple USB cords. Debug was enabled. I've reset my phone and formatted it and the sdcard. So is there any way of me rooting my device with a apk or without use of a computer? Thanks for your time.

here is a good guide to root http://nexusshacks.com/nexus-s-root/how-to-root-nexus-s-or-nexus-s-4g-on-ics-or-gingerbread/
here is easy way to set up sdk http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1474895

thats the problem. my computers will not recognize my nexus at all. ive tried 3 computers and 3 usb cables. no avail. so im curious to know how i can root my 2.3.7 nexus with a apk such as z4root. i cant get my computer to recognize my phone at all. and my phone doesnt even have the popup to connect via usb.

I hear ur concern but even if there was a apk to root, then ud still be in the same position.... which is no way to connect to any computer.
I had the same issue when I bought my 4G in November. I'll get home soon and give the link I used to get the Samsung drivers so ur computer will recognize ur phone.
For now try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=9919944
Vs Nexus S 4G

I've tried the sdk and pdanet. Didn't work. My phone doesn't even realize its connected to the computer. The Android that pops up usually, doesn't appear in my phone. It just charges. So if there is any app/apk to root my phone please let me know

okay, I found what i used:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19AEbiWYULE
good luck

I just attempted this. My phone doesn't even have the status bar notification saying it's connected via USB. And the computer said "device not recognized" I've read that it is a software problem. Is it a phone hardware/software, computer, or the drivers for my computer?

After u did it, did u try the root program?
Or when did it say not recognized....
I remember not being able to hook up via USB but after I did the above I went straight to root program and it worked so I'm not sure what to tell u
But if ur stock, call ur provider or store and just say u want to hook up to computer for music and pics. They can't deny u that.
Good luck
Vs Nexus S 4G

No I didn't try the rooting program. I ran the Samsung drivers and then plugged my phone up and my computer still said USB not recognized. And I am all stock. No root, locked bootloader and everything. I called sprint the other day and they couldn't help me cause I'm not on a contract with them. I just got the sprint ns4g. But ill give them a call again.
Thanks

If u have drivers installed, uninstall them. Reboot ur pc and then reinstall ur drivers manually, then give it a shot

USB Problem! Help!

I have a Samsung Fascinate and my phone won't connect to my computer! A few days ago, I was on rooted stock and I noticed it wouldn't connect to my PC. I did a data wipe and installed MIUI and noticed the problem was still going on. I thought it was no big deal but now it is VERY annoying! I've tried it on my Windows 7 computers and one XP computer and none of them work! They all say that it can't be recognized. I have accidental insurance on it and the person at BestBuy mobile said I can root it without voiding it. I don't know if installing a ROM (MIUI) voids it or not. I'm trying to do an Odin restore and when I put it in download mode, Windows still says that it can't recognize it. I want it on stock before calling them about it. I'm thinking this is a hardware issue. Anyway to get it off of MIUI and back to stock without a PC?! :'(
have you tried going to settings/development and un checking USB Debugging? worked for me after update.
Yes, make sure USB Debugging is not selected, as this will prevent your device from entering storage mode and be picked up by your Computer.
Also, make sure that you're using the original USB data cable that came with your phone. Other cables might allow charging, but won't work for data.
or...
if still doesnt work, try a factory reset (sorry)
I am using the original cable. And USB Debugging is unchecked. It also won't detect my phone in download mode...? Could it maybe be the USB?

Did you download the ADB usb drivers? Also, be very careful downloading the Samsung Drivers and updating Win 7. They broke two of my computers.

usb device not recognized

I am trying to flash my Infuse in Odin however...
I have Samsung Mobile Drivers installed. When I have Odin up and ready and plug in the Infuse in download mode, windows says USB device not recognized.
also, when the phone is booted up, it will not charge, and windows will not recognize it either.
When booting into ClockworkMod Recovery it says:
E:Missing bitmap indeterminate2
same thing through indeterminate6
I have tried on different computers, with a few different micro USB cables
What the heck is wrong with this phone?
That happens to me a few days ago too. Windows used to recognize my phone, then without doing any change, windows wouldn't recognize at all, even after reinstalling Kies, trying different usb cable or USB port. What I did to solve the problem is that I turned on Kies first, then plug in the phone, windows would say it could not recognize the USB decide, then in Kies, I clicked on troubleshoot (or something like that), then Kies will reinstall the driver and then u can go back here and thank me. Lol. Hope it helped u

Computer won't recognize friends ns4g but does mine?

I wanted to root my friends ns4g but my of won't recognize it. He had a galaxy s 2 as well and it was the same issue.
I installed pdanet, Samsung drivers, different USB cords, nothing!
When I plug it in nothing happens, then about 5 mins later, USB not recognized. I manually tried to put the .inf file through the windows 7 wizard and still nothing.
Like I said my ns4g works perfectly fine, when I plug his in nothing works at all. I don't understand this at all. I have a 64bit system and made sure everything was for that. Can anyone help me out?

Can you mount usb in either recovery (if applicable) and android? Have you tried with usb debugging enabled? Also, does it show you no android device is connected in device manager?

in device manager it only shows unknown usb device with "!" symbol. Yes for debugging, and cant boot into recovery, there is no recovery as its not rooted.
help someone please! lol
There was something i read about the fast charge widget messing up the ability of the nexus to properly connect to the computer and a fix. Part of its design is to block USB file transfer when connected to a computer. There were several phones that couldn't connect after loading the widget.
Before i go and waste a bunch of time researching and digging for this. I would like to know if your friend has installed the fastcharge widget on his phone.

Sent from my LS670 using XDA
yeah, didnt work. Factory Reset the phone too.
Try a different USB port on PC and pull the battery for a min.

Try drivers from Samsung support page. It took me a bit. But usually the pdanet drivers work. You could try another pc that does not have the drivers for the nexus.

Are you referring on how to connect S3 to a PC so that you can Odin the phone?
If so, you have to install Android SDK on your PC first. Here's a link. Do a YouTube search as well....there are how-to videos that will walk you thru it.

I did not have to install the android sdk to use Odin.

What operating system are you using? Have you tried disabling any internet/virus/malware protection software temporarily? This may help alleviate your issue. If on Windows, do you hear an audible sound when you connect/disconnect your phone to the PC? Also, try different USB ports if you haven't already. Windows is a fickle beast sometimes

[Q] S3 will no longer connect to pc

I was getting ready to transfer files to my sdcard on the s3 to root when my phone stopped connecting to my pc and laptop. I have the samsung drivers installed on my comp. I started having this issue after I installed the drivers. My computer and laptop see the phone and always want to install drivers from it and nothing else. Pc is XP and laptop is windows 7 64bit. I want to root my phone, but when the drivers are installed neither my pc or laptop will recognize it. What should I do?
EDIT:
I am now getting this error when driver is installed:
Unable to find software on your pc that can recognize your device. Service pack 3, windows media player, version 10 or higher, for windows xp or android file transfer for mac os must be installed.
You can download and install PC KIES from *website* in order to sync data with your device, back up data, and upgrade your device.
My PC runs service pack 3 and has windows media player 10 on it.
I had a problem connecting to my PC twice since I rooted. All I did was uninstall the Samsung driver from my PC then reinstall. I rebooted after I reinstalled then connected my phone and it worked both times. I'm not sure what happens and why all of a sudden you lose it but at least it was an easy fix for me. I hope this helps.

I've had the same issue and this has also fixed it for me. I've had to do this multiple times. I guess I'll blame it on the MTP.

I haven't rooted my phone yet. I have reinstalled the drivers a few times. I am still having the issue. Should I just install the drivers, run odin and hope that it sees my phone?
I make the same post about my solution, not sure if it will work for you. I ditched all Samsung drivers and used the ones for the experia x8, it always connects now. But if you ever need to odin, you will have to install the Samsung ones. Maybe google them and see if they will work for you.

Are you using the usb cable that came with the phone? Also try different usb ports on your pc's I can't get my girlfriends laptop to recognize my phone and my desktop will only work if I use certain usb ports and the stock cable.
Tried all that. It happened the first day I got it, bone stock. Not a big deal, the x8 drivers get the job done.

I would make sure you don't have any other drivers installed from previous phones. I would uninstall drivers reboot PC then reinstall drivers and reboot again. Make sure phone is in mtp after you connect it to PC.

im getting the same problem. didnt really have a problem when i first got the phone, but started recently. i uninstalled older version, rebooted and installed Device(Install),USB Driver (Software) (ver.v1.5.14.0) Win XP/Vista/Win 7/Win 8 Nov 9, 2012, rebooted, then connected phone to pc. it seemed to install fine this time, but i still get these messages on my phone and pc. i played around with different ports and cables, and sometimes the sdcard files show, sometimes it doesnt. i eventually get the unable to find software message though.
