HTC Hero Bricked - Please Help - General Questions and Answers

Hi guys, I'm new here.
I have a problem... And I have tried very hard to find a fix over the past few days, but no result. So here I am.
I have a HTC Hero, which was running Android v2.1-update
I rooted it, and used a corrupted rom.
Now I cannot use it. When I start the phone, it takes ages to load, then I am presented with a strange unlock screen. I unlock it, and I am presented with a white HTC-Logo screen. If I wait long enough, a menu appears asking me which update to apply. I select the first, and I am given a choice of 3 languages. I select English, and hit Next. This is where I am stuck. I have an o2 simcard (which works fine) and it doesn't detect it. It keeps asking me to insert the simcard with an animation on how to do this.
I'm not sure if this could be called "Bricked" as I don't really know the meaning of the term, but either way, a Brick is the only thing it's good for right now.
I am desperate for some help. I have just bought it and am feeling kinda sick now. I learned my lesson. Don't Root!
Thanks in advance!

Well..."don't root" is not really a lesson, just when you do something next time, you have to make sure that you are doing everything correct, and following 100% the guides that you find here in XDA..
My Hero is rooted since I bought it...
Anyway, Do you have recovery installed? Amon RA or clockworks?
To find it out, just turn off you phone and press Home+Off button for a few second, then it will go into recovery.
From there you can copy another rom and flash it.
I am currently using Elelinux 3.6, but you can find many others.
By the way, which rom did u flash?

Hi, thanks for the fast reply
I cannot get onto the homescreen to install any apps at all, so all I got to work with is the recovery menu. Fast Boot and SimLock.
I installed what I now know to be a new lockscreen, which was about 2.5mb. So obviously not right now, but I rushed into it without looking things over properly.
I might be able to fix it, if the simcard was detected. It stops me at that point during recovery.
I rooted the device using a terminal app, but as the data has now been wiped, the app doesnt exist. And I cant reinstall it again because I cannot get to the homescreen.

You don't need to install any app, I don't understand if you have recovery installed or not.
Just press home+off button for a few seconds when your phone is OFF.
What do u see?

That gives me the red ! sign, and I can get a menu up by pressing volUp+off
This menu has Fast Boot and SimLock.

Yes, that is the normal bootloader, that means you don't have recovery installed.
You could try to unroot your phone by install the HTC sync software on your PC first, then use it to reinstall the stock RUU 2.1, that you can find on the HTC website:
http://www.htc.com/nl/help/htc-hero/#download (change the language)
Once you have done that, you should be able to root it again if you want, but make sure you will install recovery this time.
Look for the guides in the Hero forum, or you can use this:
http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/threads/how-to-root-the-2-1-ruu-or-ota-update-for-the-hero.1930/

Hi. I found this a while ago, and tried it. But I cannot enable USB Debug, as I cannot do ANYTHING on the device...
I just ends up giving me a 170 error, always.

Are u talking about the HTC sync driver?

Yes. I think so.
RUU_Herrange_UK_2.73.61.66_release_signed_NoDriver.exe
It starts a utility up which tells me to make sure the device is connected via usb to my pc, check battery is 30% or higher and something else.
Then it tells me to wait, and returns a 170 error.

Then you should check the HTC Hero forum or Google for any suggestions, I am sure people had the same problem in the past.
I am afraid I can't help you more than this, I am no developer..

Okay, thanks anyways
I have already raked Google and help forums, coming here is my last resourt.

Keep searching, I am sure there is a way to fix it, I have read so many things about the Hero in this two years, unfortunately I forgot most of it...

I will do. I have no choice, the warrantly is now void xD

[Q] Issues attempting to root phone

First time ever trying to root a phone, and I tried using the one click method to root my phone, and when I got to the point of installing the radio, it wouldn't work because I stupidly forgot to turn off my anti virus.
So when I attmepted to go back and give it a second try, the program will not restart the daemon server, this is what shows in my command prompt.

and it just gets stuck there.
If anyone can help me with this, it would be GREATLY appreciated.
You need to make sure that USB Debugging is enabled. It's possible that during your initial run, some things worked, and thus the USB Debugging was unselected. Go to Menu>Settings>Applications>Development and make sure that it is indeed ticked.
I've made sure it was in charge only, made sure fast boot was off, and the unknown sources was turned on, as well as USB debugging turned on god only knows how many times thinking I had made a stupidly simple mistake like that.
Edit: I just tried it again, and now it repeatedly says that the daemon server is not started, and says it cannot connect to daemon
I'm no pro, having just rooted my first Android. I would consider the possibility of the following. 1) Corrupted usb drivers, reinstall drivers. 2) Antivirus deleted some one click files, remove and redownload.

I guess it's worth a shot, I'll try it when I get home from work tonight.

Number 2 was the most common issue when I read through Bubby's thread a month or so ago (all 3200 posts). If you use MS Security Essentials, you have to completely uninstall BEFORE downloading the program.
I didnt even have security essentials on my PC, all I use is Eset smart secuirty, and I had it completely closed down, shut down the process from task manager.
Alright, I went back and followed everything from scratch. Uninstalled Eset smart security, removed all of the HTC drivers, then reinstalled them, and started the process over completely
seems to have worked flawlessly so far, but I haven't tested the radio yet.
Edit: it works, flawless victory
You should realize that you may not completely kill the antivirus from process manager. You would need to shut it down from within the program. There are many processes running that are in task manager that belong to the antivirus, some which you may not recognize.

like I said in my above post, I completely uninstalled it, and everything works now.
I hope I'm not asking a bit much, but could someone showed me a detailed instruction set for my first time trying to install a new ROM on my droid?
I want to put Cyanogen on it, but have no clue how to go about doing so.

There's one stickied to the general section.
[For the life of me, I'll never understand how a thread that's stickied and should be so clearly visible, gets missed/ignored by so many people.]
Well I have it working for the most part, but I can't find the Kernal needed for Cyanogen 7.0.3(Is it included with the rom?), and would I need a different radio for it as well?

I would think that both the kernel and the recommended radio questions you ask would probably be addressed in that roms thread.
If not in the original post, then by someone asking in the comments.
I apologize if I seem like a complete idiot to this stuff, It just never really occurs to me to go searching for things like this, because 90% of the time when I try that in the past, it doesn't work for my specific issues.
Thanks for taking the time to respond though, I'll go take a look through the rom thread.

I know, a lot of people feel the same way.
ROM threads are unique in that they are focused on the ROM in question. Comments/questions/answers are by/from users of that specific ROM.
I visit many of them, most of which I've never even flashed on my phone, just to get myself educated on little quirks that people are experiencing.

[DEV & CWM Recovery for Pantech Crossover]

Forgive me if I'm posting in the wrong section. Forgive me if I'm not allowed to post here yet. Just forgive me in general. I don't want to be banned or anything like that. I'm Extremely interested in android development.
I made a working port of ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.8 for the Pantech Crossover. I wanted to do this before I started tinkering around with porting cm7.2. So that I would have a way to backup, restore, and flash new roms, etc... Or else when I make a noob mistake like yesterday and have a non booting phone resulting in having to flash my old boot.img with fastboot...anyways..
DANGER: DRAGONS AHEAD
FLASH AT YOUR OWN RISK
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED
The method I used to flash the recovery was:
1)adb push recovery.img /sdcard/recovery.img
2)flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
3)repeat step 2 (for some reason it gave me a read error out of memory the first time)
Here's the link to the custom recovery:
http :// dl. dropbox .com /u/20070520/ recovery.img
I know I'm not supposed to post links yet. Remove spaces
I just hope that there are others with the Pantech Crossover that are interested in this and the possible future development of custom roms.
Also if anyone knows if there is a good way to get ahold of koush let me know, so I can give him what he needs to hopefully add this to Rom Manager. I couldn't message him on github because he doesn't have an email set up with it
And while I'm at it. Here's the method for rooting your crossover. I'm not going to provide the files since they can easily be found with a google search.
1: Find a copy of gingerbreak.apk and copy it to your sd card
2: Enable usb debugging and allow installation of non market apps
3: Install gingerbreak
4: Root device with Gingerbreak
5: You can uninstall Gingerbreak when its completed.

Thanks so much for this! I have a friend with a crossover and is always looking for my help with making it work better. I realize this is a newer thread, I was wondering how things were coming along with CM? Anything I can do to help perhaps?
crap i need a rom to fix my crossover the buttons are no longer mapped after a hard reset. please help.
Slow
Well, it's been slow goings so far. I downloaded the open source files for the p8000 and it looks like they just built the original rom from a generic build. I've been trying to get a more customized build setup but I need to do some more reading so far. One of the problems is that instead of an akmd(2) binary for orientation and compass it uses three separate modules. Plus the hci_attach is a bit different as well and so is the bluetooth. So that significantly hampers the ease of even a basic port.
As far as the gentleman with the question about a rom to fix your device. The best I can do right now is to upload a clockwork mod backup after I do a factory reset. I don't get much time to work on this between my wife and daughter.
Also, do you have adb access to your device? Surely it wouldn't be too difficult to adb push the correct keymapping files back to your phone.
You say a hard reset messed up your mappings? What problems were you experiencing prior to the reset?
Crossover
Hello,
I just wanted to let you know that there are people watching your thread. I am very interested in this as my parents have Crossovers and have recently rooted and unlocked them (well, I did) and set them up to work on Net10.
The only issue I've noted is that there are some failures, like the Market refusing to install apps no matter what is done. I'm going to install your ClockworkMod in hopes that later it might be useful.
I realize there isn't a large development scene for the P8k yet, and maybe there won't be but it's always a great hope that those with the capabilities might take pity. I was almost thinking that it might be my foray into actually looking deeper at the code than the small bit I've done.
Kind Regards,
Kaylus

I haven't had any problems with the market refusing to install apps but I do sometimes run across the no connection error with the market when on wifi. Although I did notice this before I rooted my crossover. Sometimes disabling and re-enabling the wifi helps. I really do think it is a bug somewhere in the original rom.
As far as the custom recovery image. Everything seems to be working pretty good. I use it mainly for restoring previous backups. I would say I've restored my backup at least a dozen times. Occasionally it states there was an error restoring .android secure but I have yet to track that down. I need to double check the recovery.fstab to make sure I have everything set right for the mount points.

I'm actually completely stuck at this point. I'm rooted, unlocked, different carrier, APN set correctly. I can access data and voice -- but it just hangs at "Downloading..." on the market. If I factory reset it works initially but after reboot it fails. I'm not quite sure why this occurs and if it is just this phone or a side-effect of using it on a different carrier.
Strangely Wi-fi doesn't resolve it.

I'll give your recovery a run and let you know, if you manage CM7 let me know I know it's a big undertaking. Thanks for the response.
Market Error
As far as the Android Market hanging. I see a few references to it being cause by the .android_secure folder becoming corrupted on the sd card.
One temporary fix suggest moving all the installed apk's back to the phone memory and deleting the .android_secure folder. Then rebooting and moving those apps back to the sd card.
That seems like some wasted time if it doesn't happen to work. I would just turn the phone off, remove the sdcard, and restart (granted any apps that were moved to the sdcard wont work until it is reinserted.) Then I would try to download and install an app. If that works then shutdown, insert sd, and reboot.
I'm really curious if the problems with .android_secure that you and i are having aren't just more bugs in the original rom.
Just as a poster above me said, I am watching this thread and really appreciate everything you are doing. Thanks again.
Well I appreciate the support. I just hope to be able to offer a rom sometime soon. Unfortunately I won't have anymore free time till Tuesday

Ahhhhh check out the pantech support page for the crossover. They finally have the Gingerbread update.

Which is great because I soft bricked my phone (don't ask) and this was going to be the only way to fix it.

anyone have a stock image of the 2.2 for android my phone came preupgraded to 2.3.6 and i would like to have it rooted over being on gingerbread since a root method hasnt been found yet for the new firmware
Bricked?
I tried to use the pantech provided gingerbread update this morning. It got about an eighth of the way through and failed. It instructed me to reboot while holding volume up and home and power. That put it in software updating mode. I tried the upgrade 3 more times, it failed at the same point each time. Now my phone is stuck in S/W Updating mode and I can't seem to get it out. I've tried pressing volume up and down for 10 seconds, and pressing volume down and home while powering on, nothing seems to make a difference. Any thoughts about how to at least get me back to froyo?

[GUIDE] T-Mobile US One S - How to ROOT and flash ROMs

So I know there's been some controversy and scares going around about the US version, since it JUST came out. I'm here to calm you guys down. I have now rooted mine, flashed an interim CWM touch version (not permanent) and have flashed a ROM......ALL successfully.
Here's what I did:
UNLOCKING:
Unlock your bootloader by registering at HTCdev.com and following the unlock instructions. Under device, choose "All other devices", as the One S is not yet listed. It'll walk you through getting your unlock token and flashing it.
ROOTING
Follow Paul O Brien's instructions on rooting your phone. I flashed the r3 superboot file he had. The first time it didnt take and just booted the phone back up. Second time it took, and seems to have stuck, at least for apps. Please note that my phone says *TAMPERED* along with the *UNLOCKED* notification. I have no idea what that means exactly, but everything works great for me.
This means if you dont want to leave Sense but want to get the tons of useless and annoying T-Mobile and other bloatware apps out, you can. T-Mo are dicks and make almost 100% of the apps on it by default SYSTEM apps, therefore unremovable. So you'll need root and Titanium Backup to freeze or delete them. I'd recommend freezing the non-TMo one's just in case.
FLASHING ROMS
1. Flash Paul O Brien's intermin CWM touch version. You MUST use this interim CWM version for the moment, as the others do not work properly. Some things like USB mount dont work in this interim version, but the important functions like wipe and flash, backup and restore, and restart do work. The CWM recovery seems permanent, based on my initial trials, so no worries about reflashing it each restart.
2. Flash your ROM of choice from Clockworkmod Recovery. I'm using Black Dragon right now, but there are others out there as well. I'm personally looking forward to CM9, but its a little ways away, usability-wise.
So there you have it, all you US guys. Don't be afraid to mod your phone. Remember all the warranty void disclaimers as always. I'm not responsible for you bricking your phone. This is just my experience in just under 24hrs of use. Things are looking good for the One S.
bump... i see US users still asking.
Mods, can we perhaps sticky this post of mine? I don't want to take credit for the actual methods of rooting, since Paul O Brien and others deserve that credit, but I think it'd be helpful for US users, since many don't know whether or not the international method works.
That, or perhaps editing the Intl guides to make it clear that the US version accepts the same methods and ROMs.
Worked great for me

So if we root and flash a custom ROM is there any way to get the phone back to factory state, and get rid of the *TAMPERED* and *UNLOCKED* notification??
Did anyone else get a bit of a sad chuckle out of the first step in the instructions being "remove and reinsert battery"?

If you need to perform a hard reset on the One S, you hold down the power button for about 7-10 secs.
First of all, thanks for this thread...I used the HTC One S All in one tool kit to unlock my phone, unfortunately I miss understood one of the directions(#5) and stopped using the tool kit and followed another thread, much to my surprise, my bootloader is unlocked, hooray My question is, how do I get back to the original state if that is possible? The reason I ask, is I would like to go back and do it correctly...I used better terminal emulator to see if I had root, but all I got was the $ sign instead of the # sign So I would like to start over...
Thanks in advance for the help
I'm honestly not sure what the procedure is for relocking an HTC bootloader. Perhaps do some Google research on some of the latest models, and I bet you'll find something.
That being said, once you unlock the bootloader a single time, the best you can do is go to **RELOCKED** state. You'll never get back **LOCKED**. Once it's gone it's gone. I'm curious about the **TAMPERED** message though. That's an ugly word.
not sure what exactly went wrong.
somehow flashed CWM and now thats the only thing my phone will boot to, even after re-flashing the stock recovery.
can't get the phone to turn on, only CWM every single time.

yeah, tried reflashing both CWM & stock recovery. phone still boots to CWM everytime.
Luckily i can still access the phone via ADB, (while in recovery) so i'm sure i'll be able to sort it out. just need to take a fresh crack at it tomorrow. gonna switch back to my galaxy nexus tonight. (oh wait, i dont have any other phones that use microsim)
haha.
Hmm, interesting. Did you flash the interim recovery that Paul O Brien posted, and not another version? Just wanna make sure. I've heard of this happening in my past experience with the Nexus S, but I can't recall what the deal was. Regardless, I don't think you're in trouble. As with your GNex, it's very hard to completely brick the device unless you flash perhaps a bad hboot file, however I'm not really familiar with HTC devices.
This is my first HTC so I'm still trying to learn how the hboot and other processes work together. Sry to hear you had bad luck.
UPDATE: You should try the root install script. It tells the phone to boot after install. That might get you booted atleast.
Some thoughts:
1. Flash the stock recovery back and reflash CWM
2. Clear cache and dalvik within CWM, and make sure to use the 'Reboot System' option if you aren't already.
From what I can tell, your "boot-to-recovery" flag is set on the phone, and isn't getting cleared.

That step is only if you want to flash ROMs, or need to wipe cache, dalvik, etc. CWM is used for flashing and recovery/backup purposes. If you're not using ROMs yet, then you have no need for it.

luckily the phone would work via ADB while in CWM. So i pushed three different ROMS to the phone, at first each oen would lock up and reboot within 20 seconds of doing anything. I then went back into recovery & wiped data/cache/dalvik maybe 10 times out of sheer frustration. Then re-flashed a fresh copy of black_dragon_v4.0, didnt do anything after boot. just let it sit there till this morning.
now the phone seems to be working perfectly...
so hopefully if anyone encounters this problem my last couple posts will help them out!

Wow, I have no idea dude. That sounds kinda crazy. Hopefully all will be well in the future and you won't come across it again.
the only variable i can think of is that i did have the phone about a week before launch. HTC mailed it to me directly.
I thought maybe that had somethign to do with it, but as far as i can tell the phone was the final shipping version.
I sent you a PM, trying to find a solution.

[Q] Noob needs help after rooting - Stuck in hboot & white screen

Well, I must admit I am in over my head....I have owned an inspire for a few years and finally decided that I wanted to try and learn about rooting etc. I followed instructions using the advanced ace hack kit and flashed cyanogen mod7 rom and I was so proud....then some problems and some bad decisions by me. First, there was some sort of issue with the phone as I could place calls and hear but the mic did not work. Unsure of how to fix that problem, I tried a new rom (leedroid) which was still ok but upon starting I had no service. Clearly, I do not know enough to troubleshoot and I should have read more prior to beginning and this is where I began to get into deeper trouble. After trying to revert back to the cyanogen mod7.2 using rom manager, I have really messed things up. Right now, I have lost clockworkmod recovery so when I hold down the volume and press the power, my only option is hboot and it prompts me "do you want to start update"that goes nowhere...If I begin with the power button only it hangs on the HTC white screen. Iknow, I know I should be searching and reading. Believe me, I am but I could sure use someone to give a lost guy some help! I have been trying to learn and download my original RUU to perhaps get back on track that way...Thanks in advance for taking the time to read!

First try taking out your SD card and using something to connect to the computer and take off the P981IMG or whatever that zip file is called. Then try booting back into recovery again. Also, next time try to not use rom manager and just flash it from recovery mode.

Here is the rooted stock from and radio just place in root of SD (not in any folder) boot up into hboot since you known how to do that let it find it will ask to install volume up for yes let it do its thing then reboot when asked. Make sure all roms and pd98 s are off SD card before you put this one on it. It will give you gingerbread from then you can install whatever custom from you want.
Have and enjoy the learning

Wow! First, thanks for the quick repsonses. Yes, my first lesson learned is to flash from recovery as it seems more direct and therfore less likely to create problems for me until I get up to speed. This morning I am at work, so not alot of time available, but I did take out the SD card and rebooted and I found it interesting (for me anyway) that I can now choose the clockworkmod recovery v5.0.2.0 with out my SD card inserted. So, I can see that I messed up something on my SD card. I think when I get some time today, I will download the rooted stock that Reinaldo offered, clear all the stuff off my SD card and put this file into the root directory and let hboot update with this file. I knew I came to the right place for help! Think I will spend the day reading the basics trying to understand how all these pieces work together...
U just have a PD98IMG.zip on ur sd card that u need to get off of it cuz hboot is trying to flash it as soon as it boots up. So when u remove ur sd card, it's not trying to flash that zip so u can get to recovery. So u need to plug ur sd into a pc & move or delete that zip. Or u can just move/delete it with a file explorer once it boots up, of course. Just be careful to never put a PD98IMG.zip on the root of ur sd card unless ur ready to flash it. Then be sure to move or delete it once ur done flashing. Did u download a radio or something?

basicaly, I feel screwed right now does anybody can help me on this?
it is probably something super stupid and simple but I can'T find any solution so I decided to join this forum for a bit of support..

ok, most of the link to download the needed files are dead... I might have to rely on your support guys.
the http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1180331 thread didnt helped enough..
Did you install the adampk rom?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
no I haven't...
so far , what I did is
root the pone with the one clicker (wich was a success)
did the recovery with the clockworkmod recovery thing,
restarted and exectued this website's tutorial to jellybean (start with WWW stuff.androidauthority.com/g2x-p999-t-mobile-cyanogenmod-10-cm10-unofficial-115536)
and then, look like it failed..
this morning, I managed to get back to the recovery boot screen and found that if I press the house icon it show up a menu.. but this menu giving me access to reboot, wipe cache, data or install update.zip (which was supposed to fix my problem) but this menu is blued out and unaccessible..
dunno if it helped..
right now, I am trying to get acces to my phone doing the no battery boot thing but my pc doesnt seem to recognize my phone + I am at work hehe so I am pretty much limited in acces due tu the it protection and firewall stuff
I am gonna try to redo that stuff tonight at home but meanwhile, if any of what I described may give you a clue on how to help me, I really appreciate the effort!
thanks again for the support guys, I know it can be a pain sometimes to help people screwing some beginner stuff like I probably do right now

I say you needed to use the g2x android development forums on this site to find a suitable jb rom, not this other site. The one click method isn't very stable, so nvflash is most definitely what you need to try to get working. There are very thorough tutorials on how to get that to work. Do you know which clockwork recovery version you have installed? Should be 5.0.2.0. Once you get home, I suggest you read read read. Do as much research you can to make sure you can follow nvflash instructions to the letter. I know I personally spent about a week researching to make sure I had a solid understanding of the procedure.
I recommend getting nvflash going to get clockwork properly installed, then download a rom from xda, nowhere else. I would even say use a gb rom before trying a jb ...the jb roms are hackfest versions, so they have (from my experience) much poorer battery life, and lack hardware acceleration. Netflix and many 3d games won't work. You can use adampk or mazout's roms but they don't have working radio, i.e. no phone/SMS functionality.

Boot into recovery, there should be an option to format or wipe system. Do that then flash the ROM. It won't boot if you flash it over stock.
Also, use the paranoid android rom found in the development section, same cyanogenmod base but works better.

Ok, wait I think I understand what you're saying now. If you can, pm the op of that thread you used to unbrick. Ask that person if you need some kind of different file in that .zip file to work on your carrier.
I remember having to use that guide to get back to stock. Glad to see you're making progress. I know it can be frustrating when devices get wacky. Good luck!

hehehe sorry, I am not fully used to the right terms so I rather stay in the gray zone by using words like ''thing''
but I can now oficially say I was talking about ROMs
finally, I managed to bring back my phone to the stock mode everything seem to work!
now I can brick it again!
thx for the help!
I began to wonder if it was just a matter of changing APN settings?
Sent from my LG-P999
this, or... putting the simcard in the properly? !!
