What is the big deal with "ICS Themes"? - General Questions and Answers

What is the big deal with ICS themes?
Every launcher has one and every locker. People go gaga over them. It even makes the front page when something gets an ICS theme.
ICS looks just like every other version of Android to me just different icons.
What is the big deal? Am I missing something?

It looks really neat, but I think you're right. The hype of it is a little too much.
I mean, I like the theme, but I also like to change things around a bit. There's not many other themes in the Epic 4G Touch section other than ICS (in fact, there's 3-4 ICS themes in there.) lol!
I want ICS for the new OS benefits, the theme is nice, but I'd likely change it myself.
EDIT: I think most people just want the newest thing.

What is the big deal with "Placing your thread in the proper place"?
Thread moved to Q&A due to it being a question. Would advise you to read forum rules and post in correct section.

Thanks for advising that I read the rules. I have read them. A while back. Which of 1 through 15 did I violate?
As for my post, it was more of a rhetorical question.
Am I to draw the conclusion that if a question is asked in a post that it should only be done in this section? {note: this latest question was posted AFTER thread had been moved into the Q&A Section}
I was only reading the forum descriptions and General Discussion says "Anything that involves all of the phones and doesn't fit in any of the other fora."
Since this forum doesn't specify "rhetorical" questions, I felt it better fit the General Forum. My bad and sorry for my mistake. I'll remember not to use the question mark in the future if it causes confusion.
BTW, there is another post in the General Forum where a guy asks a question.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1547122
He actually asks two in the same post! Not sure if you saw it. Just nudging you toward other offenders.

I'm in agreement.. And as soon as everyone gets an ics phone though, first thing they will do is change it and give it a 'retro' gingerbread theme anyways.

Yeah I agree people always go nuts as soon as they find something newer they havent got.
But it does look alot slicker!

anyone savvy got an easy solution to this one?

bah, humbug. I don't want to learn all about makefiles, much less the tweaky aosp setup, just to add HOST_ARCH support for armv6l in the aosp build system.
So, I'm asking for the easy way out, since google isn't very friendly about this one.
thanks for reading!
edit: sorry, mods, my first thread in general, didn't realize no [Q] threads in here. feel free to move it.

yeah, I thought this was a general sort of thing, I deliberately avoided posting it in a dev section of the forum. I saw the sticky saying no questions here shortly after posting this thread and edited the title to request it be moved so you wouldn't have to hunt for it.
sorry it was misplaced. not like I was trying to hide the fact it was a question or avoid having it moved.

Anyone ever take a shot at the Samsung M7600 beat dj?

I know its not a smartphone but does that matter? is android at all possible on this device? It looks like it has soo much potential at least for andro newbs that dont require wifi or anything. the stock firmware sucks and ive scoured the internet for updated firmware and its all deleted like the device isnt supported anywhere anymore .
anyone here ever take a crack at it ??
Neat phone; I would assume, if Android was never on the phone, and the phone was comprised of hardware parts that have never been in another Android phone, that there wouldn't be enough base information to compile a working image (no driver info for hardware, among other things.) Just a supposition though.

What if every phone had vanilla android?

I just dont get why the manufacturers bother with spending so much money on developing a user interface and then keeping it relevant with the latest android versions.
People say that they do that to differentiate their phones. When I see samsung, HTC, SE, motorola and LG phones I can clearly distinguish them on hardware.
Does google not allow them to release a stock phone or what? Basically it will be like we have several different versions of a nexus phone. Look at LG what good does it give them to have their user interface? Nobody says anything good about their software, they are so late with updates. LG makes respectable hardware for the price but because of the software thing I will never consider their phone.
I honestly think it will actually give the manufacturers a competitive advantage especially struggling ones and the money they will save on software development they can perhaps use it to lower the prices or something.
The vanilla interface is a bit rough in my opinion, i'm glad my HTC has sense
i find samsung contacts and dialer much better than vanilla one, i really miss them in cm7
Alright, I will go over this issue again. The members of this community who like to hack and tweak their phone are the gross minority when it comes to the consumers. The average consumer does not understand the hardware or anything about the phone. They see a phone with a pretty clock that can open an app quickly. If the manufacturers didn't offer their personal touches, there would be nothing to differentiate themselves from their competition. Consider us lucky though, we have a great community offering us any flavor of Android we choose for our phones.
That's the reason why some people chose the pure google experience. You know the Nexus One, Nexus S, and now the Galaxy Nexus. It would be nice that other manufacturers would make phones without any costom UI and other things, and the updates would be rolling out from google over the air. Welcome to reality...?

This was a thread for general discussion, there are many threads at the forum with a "?" in the end. This is the second time it's happened I really dont get it. I wasnt merely "asking" something for me but just something for general discussion.

Yea, it is stupid. Some people don't understand the English language. The Q&A section is not meant for questions without a definitive answer...those questions are meant for discussion. Some of the mods are real geniuses though.
I think he just sees a question mark and moves it. Its happened to me before and it is kinda irritating.
Rather than having manufacturer skins forced down peoples throats, i'd like to see a unified Android Theme Changer integrated into the OS. Manufacturers could then release devices with their own selection of Themes, including an option for 'Vanilla'. That way everybody has a choice.
Any additional software should be released through the Market for those that want it. One Nexus release a year is not enough for those of us who like our Androids unadulterated.

What happened to Omega Launcher?

For the longest time I was following the progression of Omega in another thread for his ICS Launcher until one day that was closed. Since then I cant get a reply emailing for an update nor have there been any updates on the website. I did a search here but can't find anything new either. Anyone know where this discussion has moved to or what progress has been made?

Seriously chill. My apologies but how can you expect every single member to remember every single rule in every single forum they are a member on. Thanks for moving the the thread although I warn you, I may have an inadvertent infraction in the future. I understand forum regulating but your wording is more stick up the rear than it is friendly forum admin.

[Q] Phone decision help

I'm looking at 2 phones, The LG optimus L7 and the Alcatel OT-995.
Can i get some pros/cons? Real life usage?
What attracts you to both phones?
Why why why? :banghead:
Firstly - this is a QUESTION. So it should be in the Q&A forum.
Secondly - I'd you'd followed that simple rule you might have seen the sticky for 'Device Suggestion Thread' where this belongs.
Please learn to search before posting, it's the first rule of XDA. The sooner Mods simply start deleting posts that don't follow the rules, the better this place well become again.

or maybe the mods just need to delete accounts like yours??.. this is the second reply I've read of yours through casual browsing where you've jumped all over the OP of the thread. It's clear that the OP is a new member (as was the case earlier) - so although there are rules and guidelines, replies like yours does't really help the situation or give an impression of a warm, welcoming forum does it?
Instead of being sarcastic and trying to be Billy big balls on the forum - you could have just answered the question in a better tone with the addition of something like - 'in future use the search function' or a link to the original post where the rules are stated (as a friendly reminder).. it would have taken the same amount of effort as the crap you posted above... you might even make a mod one day - which is clearly what you're aiming for. Or maybe you're just happy being the unofficial forum police?.. either way - no one is forcing you to reply and if it bothers you that much or you cant help - then don't bother.. just sayin as it's clearly not worth getting your panties in a twist
