I just noticed that the external SD card is not detected when I do a manual backup? When I checked under mounts & storage, the option for the external card is to UNmount it.
Any ideas? I'm using the latest version of CWM touch.

I'll try that, but everything else on my phone. "sees" the external card. For example, my gallery is on the external card... It's a new (with the phone) class 10 Kensington or SanDisk. I'm also pretty sure that I've had the battery out between nandroid backups, although I haven't removed the sdcard.

Tell me if this is correct... I mounted the emmc memory, & I don't think that I got the message that external could not be found?
I got distracted. So I may have missed it?
If emmc is the external SD card... (think it is), I really wish that there was a VERY STANDARD use of terminology!

Are you sure about that? I read somewhere that emmc stood for external multi media card.

At the end of the day, CWM, still skips backing up my external SD card because it doesn't see it. Any ideas?
I've reinserted the sdcard, rebooted. I am just concerned because when we get ICS, I won't have the backup of my external card.. Well other than titanium backup.

Seems like either your card is bad or your port test by using your SD on another device and test port by placing a different SD in the phone

I am confused, what do you mean the backup of your external SD card? CWM only backs up a nandroid of the phones memory, excluding the eMMC and SD card. The only things which are backed up are /boot (incl kernel) /system /data /cache. SD or eMMC memory is not a part of this equation.

Two options backup and backup to internal so hitting backup sends to external hitting backup to internal....well you get the picture

OK, so people talk about boot manager a lot, and something just came to mind... what would happen to the phone it you were booted into an SD card ROM, and the card was unmounted by accident? This could be a problem!
Sent from my Sensation using XDA
my guess is the phone will probably freeze or reboot, possible into recovery, if the sd was taken out. i dont think it would continue from the cache. if that happens you would need to go into recovery and apply the Rom Manager created update.zip found at /sdcard/BootManager/phoneRom once that finishes the phone will boot into the rom it has installed on the phone itself. i see using Rom Manager as a way to test potential roms anyway not to continue using from the card. especially if the card is class 4 or below. anyway, just dont remove the card and no worries

I also have issued with my new 32gb class 6, what I find is there will be corrupt file on SD card just few but make the phone always unmount. To solve the issues I have try format with various software and method. Even try using SDFormat tool but it will have same problem. After a lot of try I think I have a solution.
Format the microsd card on Storage Setting [ Settings > Storage > SD card > Unmount > Format ]. I also find the micro sd card can't be defrag or alter with computer.
I usually defrag with Defraggler, and it's always unmount. I think the phone can't really handle sdcard with class 6 and above because don't have issued with my other's class 4 card.
The Stock ROM I find always have issued than Custom ROM
Please backup or copy your file first to computer or other storage then copy back.

Swapping cards won't breath root. If you want to transfer info over just use the computer. Take everthing off of the old one, format the new one, then put everything back on the new one.

SD Card content (your files) has nothing to do with rooting your device. Obtaining root may have involved flashing a file that you initially saved on the SD card-- that's it.
I swap cards in a straightforward, rudimentary way. I place one card in a reader on my pc and either put the other card in another reader or just leave it in the phone with "disk drive" as my "Settings-->Connect to PC" setting. I just drag whatever files I want, or everything, from one card's window to the other. I have never needed any more sophisticated method for 4/8/16/32/64 GB microsd cards over dozens of swaps.

How do I format a 64g?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using xda premium
Your computer will most likely want to format it exfat or ntfs. Go ahead and format it with exfat. Then place it in your phone. Then use your phone to format it again. I think you have to go to settings > storage > unmount the card > then format it. Then you can place it back in your pc or use a cable to copy all your files back.

^^Agoattamer speaks with wisdom.
However, I went the lazy route and just stuck my 64 GB microsd in my HTC Inspire (red) to format since I don't like opening/closing the Inspire's covers too much. The phone formatted the new card and it showed up as having 59.3 GB available, IIRC.
I always do a full format on a pc with all my cards first. I just want to make sure they are completely wiped clean first.
Inspire will most likely report the card as damaged and needing a format when you first insert it.
so i keep deleting files from my sd card but they keep coming back.
i've pulled it out and plugged it to my laptop and it says files are protected? didn't know micro sd cards can be protected ( no physical switch on the side) nor did i find anything underneath properties tab.
i went as far as formatting it while mounted, all files delete but when i restart the phone, they all come back.
i like to know how i can make this go away, kindly advise. thanks.

Are you trying to format it or delete specific files. If you want to format it find a hex editor, put a normal sd card and steal the hex from the normal sd card and put it on the 1 you're trying to format

Hi, trying to either remove protected content or format it, which ever way possible.

how do i steal the hex from another sd card?
I can't reproduce the problem so I'm unable to find the solution again. Sorry. That and I've also lost the 16gb micro SD card that had that problem. I'm using a 32gb now.

called samsung and they'll do a warranty exchange on it. problem solved
not sure how the micro sd locked up but it did, strange things happen i guess. i even tried multiple sd adapters and devices and still got the same error.

I even tried to repartition the card with a memory adapter and minitool partition!
I made several partition ... but again.. when I restart it... files are there again!
it happen to me too, im an IT eng. I already google bout this issue n most of them end up saying the memory card is corrupt... strange thing is ..i try every software (including HDD regeneration) n found no bad sector. I try format using many app, easus, AOMEI n stuff ..not working ..try to convert from Fat32 to NTFS also not working ..LOW level format from command prompt same thing... the issue is driving me mad ... replace microsd card is not answer.
Edit:
-Can't mount internal or external in TWRP 2.2.3 so I can at least re-flash a ROM
-Every time I try to add files from the computer to internal sd card, I get prompted to erase "damaged sd card." If I skip the message, I can't read the files from the phone because they are immediately deleted
-Goddammit now I can't even connect with the USB this is seriously ****ed up. It's not even a brick because I can use all my apps and phone functions as long as they aren't saving data to storage
Running CM10, everything was completely fine until I did my monthly cache and davlik wipe and now my sd card is always "checking for errors." I can't access my external sd card but if I go to twrp recovery, I was able to mount the sd card(and the filenames turned into strange characters) but now that won't work a second time.
I was just about to backup the goddamn thing too.

Bought a new microsd yesterday and I just spent several hours transferring music to it(from the adapter itself and not my phone usb), and now everything on the card was wiped when using it with my phone some how. And I did confirm the files were actually on the card before safely removing. This is completely ridiculous. These problems happening twice in a row to a lexar product that has a "10 year warranty."

I'm mostly angry at having to copy large amounts of music back the sd cards. It wouldn't be so bad to get a new sd card again if the write speeds weren't so slow. Shouldn't class 10 get a lot more than 1MB/s?

I did the whole procedure in the above link but I removed my external SD before doing it and now it doesn't give the error anymore, and I can now transfer via USB which is good. At least I can save info to the internal SD too. Once I get a new external SD I'll see if it still happens.
One problem I always had was getting no more than 1MB/s on usb transfering
Recently got an Xperia E through Immix, and already had to reinstall the OS through .ftf files. Now I notice that none of my personal data (music, etc.) is showing up in the apps. When I checked Root Browser, it shows that my SD card is mounted on ext_card, rather than sdcard. Wondering if I can change the mount points so that my sd card files show up in Gallery, Music, etc.
Thanks,

This is actually the correct way to be mounted. The "sdcard" is the internal 2GB of the phone.
The "ext-sdcard" is your card.
You can just copy your files to the phone's internal sdcard.
Don't try the vold swap trick people do here to reverse the two as the chances of hard bricking your phone are very high. I know because it happened to me.
Cheers
Good, thanks. Had an issue with 'phone storage' being low, was afraid it was the same mount point.

You can partition your sdcard (external lol) though and use mount2sd to give yourself more internal space easily though.
Search the xda forum for instructions - It's really quite easy and safe.
