Just rooted wife's 2.3.4 HTC evo shift 4g and have issues flashing roms - EVO Shift 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I been trying to flash my wife's phone for the longest and was finally able to when there was a root for 2.3.4 available.. I been trying to flash roms on there from decks, to mikmik roms and cannot get the phone to get past the HTC white bootscreen unless I restore from the nandroid backup.. What am I doing wrong.. Her stock rom bootloader is unlocked and with a permanent root.. I'm trying to save her from battery life on the phone by deleting stock apps using root explorer which I got rid of all of sprint bloatware but I like flashing roms that come optimized with tweaks that I can't do but so much off a stock rom, she has terrible battery life.. 1 hour off the charge and already down to 20% battery with hardly any use but texting.. No other settings activated, 4G, gps ect.. I'm not new to flashing so I got a good amount of flashing over 6 other of my devices in the past but this phone is something else.. Thanks in advance..

Are you sure your S-Off ? What Recovery did you install? What method did you use to Root? Before you Flash another Rom you may want to read through the guide linked in my Signature on Instructions for Flashing a Rom. Sounds like you may not have wiped your device properly before flashing.

See here's the thing its s-on but they say it's open for full permanent root... I used the new. Guide for 2.3.4 rooting.. Unlocked the bootloader via htcdev.com and command prompt the flashing of cwm and su.. Even checked via terminal emulator to verify... And I wiped atleast 3times over and still no go

That might be your issue, your not fully rooted. S-On is not fully Rooted. So while you may be able to make Nandroid Backups, and remove items. I don't believe you'll be able to flash a different Rom till your S-Off, fully rooted. Take a look at the guide linked below.

Coming from Captivate, flashing questions

Sorry if this should be in a different thread. Not trying to get flamed. So I am coming from a captivate and am just wondering how is flashing stuff on the inspire different from the captivate? Typically most of my flashing was just done thru CWM on the captivate itself or thru ODIN. I know ODIN doesnt exist for the inspire, but what differences can I expect coming into? how do I get to recovery or download? Any answers on how the flashing experience is different would be much appreciated
Once you've rooted it's pretty much the same as captivate install rom manager and install Rom with cwm recovery. There isn't a need to flash back to stock. Just clear data and cache.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
yup, clockwork mod makes life a hell of a lot easier.
And this restore a heck of a lot better than the captivate did. I don't even use titanium backup anymore. All my txt messages and apps automatically restores including wallpaper
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
Thanks guys, my only question is how to get CWM on this phone after root. Im assuming its thru a kernel?
same way you do it on the captivate get rom manager from the market. Install CWM Recovery.
There's no need for special recoveries like on the captivate as there's no lagfix craziness to deal with. HTC uses Android/Linux standard file systems

Totally agree, ill never get samsung again. I would probably flash a different rom on my captivate every other day to find out which one had what bugs and what didnt work correctly, lol. The Inspire is a lot harder to root then the captivate, but is well worth it when you do, for one roms are higher quality and all 100% working, even cm7 rc1. There is no download mode for inspire, you can manually boot into bootloader mode and from there you can enter CWM Recovery.
So i looked at the HTC hack kit, are there any better instructions for rooting? just didnt see anything laid out in that thread.
Another question for yall: On the captivate when wifi was active the 3g symbol would disappear. This doesnt happen on my inspire. Does that mean hspa is still running while im connected to wifi? Battery drain is my issue with this
there's a readme in the hack kit. Very easy to follow
There is youtube two part video walkthrough, thats what i used. I learn easier if i can see it happening.
Sent from Inspire 4G using XDA App
On the vibrant (captivate) a bad kernel or Rom could mean boot loop and no hope of getting into clockwork and we would have to use odin. This doesn't happen on the inspire?
Sent from my Inspire '4g'.
ive had boot loop happen twice so far and both times i manually went into boot loader and went to CWM recovery and wiped data and reflashed then everything was fine. The one time i reflashed and still got boot loop i just restored back up and then flashed and was good to go. I made a backup right after i rooted so i wouldnt have to do it again, i suggest you do the same just to be safe.

lol dont mind the hijacking. the more questions asked the better.
the market auto restores your apps when you sign in with your google account, i cant really explain how it does this, but it sure is nice.
when you check back up my settings when you sign into google for teh first time, it starts keeping a list of market apps you've installed and restores them if you do a factory reset. doesn't seem to catch all of mine all the time though.
still have some questions regarding Flash
I read the rooting thread as well as saw the video, what I could understand is that in captivate we were rooting and then upgrading the ROM.
But here we are rooting and the downgrading.. Are we loosing any functionality? Its little difficult to understand..
can someone pls help?
You are actually downgrading the ROM then rooting THAT. After you have root, and have clockwork mod recovery installed you can install any rooted rom you like. There are a few to choose from in the Dev section.
The current Android release on the Inspire hasn't been "cracked" yet so you need to downgrade to get root.

Revolutionary from AlphaRev and Unrevoked

Anyone seen this? http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...rn-htc-phones-including-evo-3d-and-sensation/
It says support for the Thunderbolt is in the works as well. Pretty exciting, especially for those users who haven't rooted yet for one reason or another.
Cannot wait for Unrevoked to get to the ThunderBolt... thanks for sharing
Yes. It's awesome!
Ok, so I got a replacement bolt from FedEx yesterday and almost immediately went to the rooting process. I used Revolutionary for S-Off and I must say it couldn't have been easier. I'm quite pleased with the results on that front. BUT...
Now, no one can hear me when I'm on a call with them and, after trying different radios. I think it's time to return to stock so, I can troubleshoot some more and, possibly, send it back as defective (which I'm thinking was the case from the get-go). I wish I had the forethought to test the phone prior to rooting.
So, my question is, Does ANYONE know how to get S-On after Revolutionary?! I'm starting to get uneasy. Never had this problem before.

Ok well first to alleviate your concerns it is possible. My guess is that they just haven't released their s-on tool yet. You can do it yourself but YOU MUST BE VERY CAREFUL. This thread's OP explains the process. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186022 HOWEVER you will need a few things first. ADB and fastboot installed and working along with knowledge of how to use them. Plus you will need the enghboot.nbo file extracted from the exploits.zip located in JCase's original root tutorial. This is a download link for the exploits.zip file. ~~> http://www.multiupload.com/K4BZ22SIT5
Unzipped that file to find the enghboot.nbo. IMPORTANT!!! CHECK THE MD5 SUM OF THE EXTRACTED ENGHBOOT.NBO FILE!!!!! It should be this ~>
"6991368ee2deaf182048a3ed9d3c0fcb"
Once you follow the directions from the first link you will still be rooted with s-off but now you can follow the directions in the OP of this thread to get back to stock unrooted s-on. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009423
Just follow directions for rooted users. Be sure to flash the no_hboot_MR1 FIRST. THEN flash the s-on hboot.

I did follow the instructions and, as I stated before, I had absolutely no trouble getting s-off, root, or cwm. All I can say to you is, you best hope you don't have any issues where you need to send your phone in to VZW. As of this moment, there is apparently no easy way back to s-on.
There's a reason I don't include this in my qANDa for noobs thread....

I rooted using this method yesterday. So far so good. No issues yet.. Still running the stock ROM though.. Currently trying to decide which one I wanna jump in to
Rooted my brothers Thunderbolt the day the Revolutionary tool was released supporting the Tbolt, and no issues so far. He upgraded from an Incredible that I rooted and flashed a custom Rom/Kernel. He almost returned it to go back to his Incredible, until I rooted his Tbolt and flashed a custom Rom/Kernel. He's a happy camper now, I'm still sticking to my Incredible!! I wish I had 4g, DL speed is insanely fast.

The root process went perfect, by far much easier than my Inspire 4g. This phone still has the same problems as it did prior to the root n' rom, slow navigation & horrible touch recognition. After the new rom got put on cell service deminished to nearly nothing and has not changed no matter what radio i install. some it just breaks the radio all together and sais no sim...
I will be smashing this phone and enjoying every minute of it!
Do it and get your insurance and buy one that works.

Any benefit to using jcase's original root method over this one? Rooted mine a while back but my girl should be getting hers this month?
First time posting in xda. 7 more and I can post anywhere. Can't begin to tell you how many times I had bugs I wanted to report after flashing a brand new released ROM.
Revolutionary root is just so damn easy. I used Unrevoked's 1 Click root to root my Incredible and that was easy , but this is easier . 5 -10 minutes and you are rooted. And I have not had ANY problems . Have flashed three roms without anything going wrong.

Well I tried the Sense-o-Maniac 2.3.5 sense 3.5 rom and I didn't really like it I guess cause I didn't notice anything different. Other than some bloat removed and beats audio which I loved! But I watched my phone go from 100% to 95% in 10 minutes of just listening to music....Dont Know why though....I would like to know what are the best roms that any of you can advise me to try that is good on battery life and get quite a differnet kick out of it if that makes sense
I haven't tried a Sense ROM if you're looking for that. CM7 is pretty different from any sort of Sense ROM but people have some mixed reviews on the battery life. It's been ok to pretty good for me, but I have an extended battery and I underclock/undervolt and use a custom kernel.
You could try Leedroid 4.0. Works great MIUI is awesome too. I personally use kernels from Faux but you could use stock kernels or kernels from Bricked too.

Extract the ROM.zip from ruu rename PG58IMG.zip, put on root of sd card, boot to hboot and, when prompted, yes to flash.

[Q] Rooting updated GB Infuse

Okay...
So I accidentally dropped my phone, and it was a TOTAL loss. It would not even power back on. I received the replacement phone today and followed through with the GB update via Kies Mini. Now when I attempt to root the phone, Superoneclick stops responding. Any suggestions?
Check out the threads in the dev forum for info on how to root. You will need to flash a rooted kernel.
I've attempted to root by several different methods, and no matter how many times, or which method I use, it will not root. I made sure that the phone was checked for USD debugging and for unknown resources. Anyone have any suggestions?
Edit: My apologies, as I thought that I posted the thread in the Q&A section where it is supposed to be.

If you want root back, you're gonna need to flash a rooted kernel through Odin. Currently Superoneclick doesn't work on GB. Hope this helps.

There is no root method for stock 2.3.6 yet... period..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
you can root it but gasp, you wont be able to flash the "official" kernel back to it since we cant dump the kernel without root... but you can flash the kl2 leaked kernel to it (same thing) but with sdcard workarounds and voodoo lagfix you need to consider a few things and its alot to say, but why bother, just use the rogers root kernel with cwm to flash a yummy rom from the dev section...
as far as rooting it without a kernel replacement well good luck with that. i will likely make a rooted heimdall package in a few days but it will have the kernel from the leaked rom (same thing) if that scares anyone with their irrational rationalizations...
why heimdall? well the mac users need some love since samsung and att wont give it to them.. its more reliable that that crappy samsung software be it kies or odin. and with the package system introduced in version 1.3 it is idiot proof..
if you must have an odin version make it your self.

weve know this would be a problem for like a year when the rogers infuse came out.
the rogers method works but it's just so many considerations and annoyances to tell people how to do it problem free. you have to assume they can creaet a file to disable the lagfix before hand and that they can extract and compress another file and depending on the kernel they use to root it they may need to edit one charachter of text. it all easy stuff but it becomes a lengthy post explaining it and then the next guy doesnt read what you already answered. ill wait for source code and fully compatible kernels with cwm so we dont have to worry about the extra process of reverting to a stock kernel, till then im burnt out on saying the same thing over and over and over.

Then search for the "mytouch 4G Slide". There will be the stock rom that can be applied in the bootloader. Just charge phone to 100%. Then put the downloaded zip from HTC Dev on the (Root of a CLEAN) SD card, and enter the boot loader (Vol+/Power). Then it'll find the zip, and ask you stuff. Blah, Blah, Blah. Your 100% Factory.

I got kind of excited when I saw this, but all I've ever found at htcdev for the MT4GS is a couple of ZIPs of kernel sources. (To others, that's what those CRC and MR files are. I don't know the difference, but they are just sources and some docs.)
So, is the helpful advice from AgentCherryColla just a mistake, or have other files been there in the past? Or maybe some other location?
(Unofficial copies of signed stock ROMs are available with pointers in various threads here.)
