Been thinking about upgrading to this phone for a while however with the rumor mill spinning about the S3 I have been sort of reluctant to go for it, but at this price point I'm almost just wanting to ignore the rumors about the S3 and just go for it!!
Advice please!
I am a longtime galaxy S fanatic, currently holding the captivate and running an ICS rom.
I used to work a retailer of AT&T so I know the contractual obligations of a refurbished device differ from a brand new one (90 day warranty vs. 1 year) however I feel I'm savvy enough to know that I'll never really have to go through the warranty department to get a new phone-because if i run into any issues, i'll just jig the bastard and start fresh.
What shall I do XDA, what shall I doooooooo
No thought required. Skyrocket for that price is amazing, get it.

Yeah I had to jump on it. There was no way, I completed the purchase before you even posted. HERE I COME, LTE! (except it's probably not available yet in my market)
I did the same switch on Monday. Traded in my Captivate to a Refurb Skyrocket. WOW is this thing fast. My area has LTE so it flies. I find it funny that i paid more for the phone case than i did for the phone. (bought a Seidio Active case).
Believe it or not a week ago they were $9.99. I wanted the SGS2, but I jumped all over the skyrocket at that price. No LTE here yet but still... Mine'll be here in the morning. Haven't bought a case yet, how's the hinge on the seidio active case,,, looks a lil flimsey in the videos I've seen.
Where are all these refurbs coming from? XDA members?
lol... prob! Just looked I dont see them listed on the website anymore, I guess they went fast.
Give it a few weeks and it will be back. Bricking is happening at a record pace.
I got my Skyrocket yesterday. So far I love it. I planned on leaving it stock for a while, but there was so much (IMO) crap on it, I rooted and removed a bunch of the AT&T and Samsung crud. So I am stock, but rooted. Also installed Launcherpro.
This has the fastest locking GPS I have ever seen on a phone. I can get a lock in 6 seconds in my basement. No other phone I have owned would get a lock downstairs. This is with the GPS only.

Nope. One story above, wood structure.
I was surprised that I got a fix. My wife's Captivate had the worst GPS I had ever seen.
I bought mine for 200 when it came out in November and it was worth it at that price! If you can buy it cheaper, do it!

I bought mine in November too, but it was only $149.99. Went up $50.00 shortly after. I lucked out.
Got mine last week for $19.95. iPhone 3 > Galaxy S2 > Skyrocket. This is the most amazing phone I've ever used.
$19! Sounds like the perfect time to get a phone to experiment with! Like who cares if you brick, or even blowup a phone at that price!

Hey everybody that ordered a refurb skyrocket make sure to check your invoice. Like I said I ordered mine at $9.99, they went up to $19.99 two days later. FINALY recieved my phone over the weekend along with a $49.99 invoice. No big deal I called and got it taken care of. I was charged $54.24 instead of $10.84, but I got the difference credited to my account so problem solved. Just a heads up to everybody.

How does the GPS see the satellites? Are you sure it's not using sensors to get a fix on your location?

I can get locked in to 8 satellites in my basement with this phone. Couldn't get a single satellite with my i9000 in the same spot. It has pinpointed me to my exact location.

So, I did not buy the insurance on my phone. I take good care of my things so it's not a problem.
However, I'm on my third cappy, due to various defects. It's pretty obnoxious having to keep going and exchanging it...
Does ATT have a policy where they will sell you another phone for contract price or give you a phone of equal value for free after x amount of warranty replacements?
Regards
Smith

Well, I'm hoping it doesn't come to that.
I've invested a lot in this phone lol extended battery and case... ok not that much haha but still.
And I couldn't switch to a phone without custom ROM's... I'm addicted... NO! it's not a problem!!!!
If you do return it you should really consider the HTC Inspire, I just got one for my wife and I feel like dumping the Captivate!
The Inspire is too new of a phone. The phone they will give you is the Xperia X10. I've looked into it after going through my fair share of Cappys which a few could have been solved with a jig which i finally bought but anywayyyyy.
From what the resolutions specialist told me on the phone the Inspire and Atrix will take 6 months for them to get refurbs of those and even then its not a guarantee thats the phone they'll give you. They'll only give refurbs based on the information given to me when I pursued the same outcome.
Didn't take 6 months for refurbs to hit market. I gave a refurb, and I ordered it at the end of october. Remind me when captivate was released? 2-3 months is prob a more realistic timeframe.
Sent from a place my wife doesn't know about (yet)
3 replacement, 1 new battery possibly, and then they will let u choose an alternate device within the same segment. I hit replacement, replacement, battery, replacement. I was told I would have the option to swap device if it failed this time too. But luckily, the 3rd one worked.
I just don't like any other phones :/
I kinda like the xperia... the HTC looks cool but is too new...
Idk. Hopefully cappy lasts.
Regards
Smith
Don't you just hate when you.get different stories. I had two different resolutions specialists tell me 5 phones and your eligible for a different model but only one told me the inspire would take 6 months its possible it will be significantly less time.

I was only 4 months into my contract with ATT with my captivate. I had 3 Aria's and 1 captivate, all with problems i documented with ATT. I posted on ATT's Facebook page how disappointed i was with them and was immediately contacted and said they would be happy to upgrade me right away. Now have an Inspire. Good Luck!
Or complain to the BBB. Worked for some of us.

Eh, AT&T usually takes back the problematic device after swapping it to the newer one.
Pretty sure AT&T didnt let him keep 4 "disfuctional" smart phones.
I think he meant he went through 3arias and a captivate
So what's the point to this thread?
He was telling us how to upgrade before we were due one, without any extra cost. I think.
Correct.

When I first got the captivate I was coming off a Motorola Razr... guess how long I had that phone. So needless to say I was a little taken back by this "new" device. Very impressed, until two months later the charge deaths kicked in... AH! Never had this problem with my trusty old Razr. Got a refurb, all is well, but me experience has left me feeling a little tainted. Not sure if I could really be satisfied with it now, so patiently waiting for June, July, and August, this guy is.

There will be many things that you need to keep an eye on with a smartphone that you didnt need to with the older razor. No Smartphone will be without issues. The old razor was just that a phone nothing more. The captivate is alot more then that.
Anyone else a bit taken back by the drastic price drops on the G2X? Not in a good way... I feel like the G2X could be the Vibrant all over again...

"The best technology never makes you think about it. It's just always brilliant."
- LG G2X Amazon Page
I'm sorry but with all the problems this phone has against it (similar to the Vibrant): Overheating, Shotty Network/Data Connections, Reboots, Lock-ups it seems like T-Mobile is readying for another magic trick. Granted, from what I've gathered reading these forums certain problems (mentioned above) could be completely unrelated. I personally feel that the poorly tinkered network/data connect software T-Mobile f***ed into this phone coupled with the completely separate battery issues are reeking havoc on the phones in a variety of ways.
Just a thought.
As a past Vibrant user (unfortunately) I felt compelled to report the similarities arising again... and all the Vibrant base got [after their woes] was a ****ty Froyo update and the Samsung Galaxy S 4G releasing swiftly via T-Mobile.
I really thought the Vibrant must've been a fluke for T-Mobile, as it was my first leap into the smartphone & Android markets (came from a flip phone, no txts or data). Seems I was wrong in my judgement for trusting them with a second/different product. Don't get me wrong... This phone is great (in theory) but so far it is dragging with bugs and this leaves me torn... =/
Your looking into it way way to much..... All phones on tmobile go on a quick sale... I bought a vibrant for 250 starting my contract in august.... a month later I buy one for a add a line for my brother for 50 bucks..... Its just the tmobile way... Hm... perhaps. I'll think it over a nice bowl to cool the thoughts down a bit lol, 4:20 is coming a little early this morning I suppose.
I guess I just want a phone that works [ultimately]... Seems like the T-Mobile way is to release half-assed, beta quality products (at least in these eyes, I understand experiences vary). I went along thinking T-Mobile was a great company until I jumped on the Android bandwagon. Guess one can't get too butt-hurt over a company acting as soulless as they do sometimes... it's in their nature. =/
Coming from a vibrant I see where u are coming from. It was the biggest pile of a phone I have ever had. It was also my first android experience after being an avid bb user.
I do see some short comings in my g2x but I hope things don't get bad. I also despise Samsung as a company and blame the vibrant fails on them. It seems ateast to me they push a product hard and never support it. They did the same thing on a TV I bought. After there lack of support on the vibrant I will never own another Samsung product. I just hope the g2x is not the same way.

I respect your point of view but I disagree with you.
I come from a Galaxy S 4G and this phone is way better and faster.
If you are experiencing those kind of issues, I would advise you to exchange it. I haven't really experience those kind of issues and the only real problem to me has been data disconnecting.
Now that I have flashed many ROM's I have come to the conclusion that EB 1.04 is the best and not many disconnections since I settle.

Oh well I guess thats not so bad.
This is always the case with phones through places like Walmart and Amazon.
Goodbye Captivate, hello Galaxy II.
Finally had it with the quirks on the Cappy over the last year: the screwy back/home button, the flakey GPS and the real lack support with new ROMs.
Picked up my GSII and bit the bullet on a new 2 year AT&T contract. I have a grandfathered unlimited data plan (30$/Mo) and they absolutely hate me, I do a minimum 10GB/mo and usually closer to 20. I ignore the threats and emails. With the 4G/H+ that will only get worse. Initial speed tests hit 5-6Mbps, almost double what I used to get.
Initial observations;
- Lightweight (plus?)
- Oddly flimsy back battery panel
- Power connector on the bottom, finally.
- Screen is bigger and gorgeous
- Gorila glass doesn't rainbow or smudge as much but does attract lint.
- It's FAST. Hitting the Gallery is instantly populated, even with a 16GB external that's packed with HD photos, movies and music. Can't stress this enough, this thing is SNAPPY.
- Badly Bloated. While this is to be expected, AT&T really went overboard. Nothing a root wont fix.
- Much better battery life. It's almost double what my highly tweaked Cappy would get and this SGS2 is still stock.
- GPS is INSTALOCK. No, really. Tested this all over Los Angeles and it's been flawless.
- Faster, more responsive browsing. I haven't confirmed this yet, but it seems to be using different DNS servers to resolve names? Hitting a URL would normally involve typing it in and waiting for the lookup to occur, it's practically instant now on any URL. Maybe they're pre-cached? Again, haven't looked into this.
- Overpriced. Even on "sale" it cost me $70 and that included trading in my Cappy, plus I had to renew for 2 more years.
Bottom line is that Samsung seems to have addressed many of the glitches that plagued the Captivate. Running GB (UCKH7) stock is an obvious factor; It comes with 2.3.4, and 2.6.35.7 kernal.
All of those things help but, overall, the hardware is a considerable leap. It's an impressive phone and I recommend it to anyone considering an upgrade.

I totally agree with Captain Zero's observations. A friend of mine picked up the AT&T GSII, and after playing with it the three of us with Captivates are super jealous. The phone is phenomenally fast. I'm running Teamhacksung's ICS and another is on CM7 with a mild OC, but nothing we do compares to the smoothness of the GSII. Even the Skyrocket has the slightest stutter from time to time when I was playing with it at the AT&T store.
Lol the skyrocket was the phone that reportedly exploded in someones pocket. Not the OG. I think.

I'm sold!!
I just upgraded to SGS II on friday and i absolutely love it. Yes the screen is bigger & brighter. The thing runs like it's on red bull concentrate! And that's before i root and overclock it...
So here's a rundown on my first impression. My cappy never got over 16mb down on my wifi connection - the first run of my speedtest.net app get me 34mb down - 1 point for sgs 2.
Second, i was able to download and install all my apps from the app store one by one FASTER than my cappy did it with titanium backup, that alone almost made me cuss around my children!
Third, browsing is stupid fast - it almost never hiccups on pages.
Fourth, 4g is awesome and i've never been able to get 1.5mb upload with ANY modem on captivate, let alone 6mb down and not even on 4g.
5th, it's lighter and the batter lasts about 40% longer than my cappy.
The camera has a FLASH! You can even download an app to use the flash as a flashlight.
Well done Samsung! Now lets see what i can screw up by rooting this baby
P.S. I did not upgrade to the skyrocket because it does not have Gorilla glass AND even though the processor is clocked faster, it does not perform faster in tests... I'll stick with this one for now.

I remember my first Android. HTC Thunderbolt. I was in Iraq (Camp Ramadi, to be specific) and my contract with Verizon was suspended during my deployment, so I bought it on launch day for full retail of $750 online. Prior to that, I had the Blackberry Tour, and prior to that a Motorola Windows CE phone. Since the Thunderbolt, I got a Wildfire S (never do THAT again), a Galaxy S II i777, Blaze 4G, and Galaxy S II i989. If my next device isn't a Nexus, it'll probably be a Sony or Motorola. As much as I love the Blaze and S II's, Samsung is starting to become a burden with their blobs and lets face it, their last couple flagships have been shoddy at best, at least construction-wise. And the big center physical buttons? What is this, 2010? Nobody wants that. At least, I don't.
