[Q] Micro sdxc on milestone xt720 6-Mar-2012. - Milestone XT720 General

March-2012.
By now, we all know that its more than likely to make sdxc micro cards work on a big variety (confirmed) of smartphones.
Practically, formatting micro sdxc to fat32 does the trick;with smartphones like galaxy s2, htc sensation, tablets etc recognizing the card (and capacity as well).
The thing i still cant figure out is :
~Should our files stored inside the fat32 micro sdxc be in danger of corruption or anything similar to loosing it? Nobody said what was his/her experience after a month of use or if he/she experienced any difficulties mentioned above...
~Will motorola milestone xt720 read the formatted to fat32 micro sdxc 64gb normally? I hope someone will be aware of this not by guessing, but after trying it or having a link with the proper answer.
In conclusion, the new micro sdxc (or exfat) isnt worth our patience for more available gb per card... Unless there is some short of firmware to get started (and maybe a start for xda developers to update roms).

BTW , My motorola milestone xt720 has a custom rom cyanogen mod 7.2 (2.3.7) by kang.

i've been using my 64 GB card for well over 4 month now, and there's no sign of trouble, and i hope it stays that way
I'm using it with Link2SD
however, I've not yet tried to use it on the XT720 as a 32GB seemed more than plenty enough, due the limited amount of RAM there are not many heavy games you can run off this phone, so usage for Apps / Games are very limited
if you use it for storage, there wouldn't be any problem as SD card corruption only affects areas of the card that are frequently R/W as with any form of App2SD integration like Link2SD

Thank you for your answer, i appreciate the time you took to post that kind of comment.
BTW if you ever try it to motorola milestone xt720, let me know if it can be used 100% for micro sdxc 64gb (fat32).

internal storage

why did htc only put 1 gb of internal storage into this phone. does anyone know what the reasoning was by doing this.first reports had it with 4 gb of internal storage now its 1gb. i know you can add memory via sd card but why not just make the internal memory 16/32 gb. not bashing the phone, i have mine on preorder and cant wait. this will be my first android phone, but just would have liked it to come with that much onboard.

I've been using one of these in my TMO US HD2 running Froyo NAND.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211535
Copilot, mp4 videos, lot 'o audio files.
Not a hiccup.
Haven't run any apps from the card other than map data but I might try a couple.

How is ADATA as a card supplier? I've only ever used Kingston & SanDisk & never had any issues. I've been looking in to getting a class 10 16GB card for when tmous drops the Sensation on the 8th & newegg has this one (when it comes back in stock).

Supposedly it has 4GB but only 1GB is user accessible (1.1 from what others here have reported).
first android. start learn. 1gb is nand data partition. (4gb all nand, system, cashe, data) used for system data (contacts, sms, u.t.t.) and apps. cant used for downloads and media. not need more.
but it would be better to have 16gb internal storage cause flash storage is always faster than a sd card (at least in terms of access time)
Seriously guys....it's no problem.
I got my sensation 3 days ago, installed 35+ apps and it hasn't even made a dent in the internal memory.
It's not like the desire if people are thinking it'll come to that.
After 35+ apps, i still have 800mb left of memory. I've got big games installed.
Seems a lot automatically install onto SD card without even telling it.

They did it because it was cheaper to put a smaller amount of NRAM in the phone.

Of the 8 or so Adata cards I have purchased over the years, (With 4 kids, a wife and my toys, MP3 players phones, cards for work) I have only had to RMA 1 card, one time and they had an amazingly great support group here in the US.
Very happy with their products!
Good to hear Barff1984. sorry but i am new to android so i though 1 gb of storage was not going to be enough for apps. this will be my first android/htc phone and just want a great first experience.
As a current Desire owner, internal memory is the real killer for me. I've not been able to install an app in months as there is no room left. I'm thinking about upgrading to a Sensation mainly because of this (and it's just SO fast!). Just wish it had an amoled screen like my Desire. It looks so washed out in comparison.
it's 100x better than the desire when it comes to apps. I'm running out of things to download now (V heavy app user) and still have 70%+ space left of internal
So yea, don't worry about the internal memory....I've yet to find an owner who said they've run out of space. Unlike the desire.
It's actually quite strange moving from a desire. I used to have to delete a lot of apps, then reinstall at a later date when i wanted them. My Appbrain account was constantly used to reinstall...with the sensation though, i just installed everything...I'm going app-happy

[Q] Maximum SD card size?

What's the maximum SD card size for the external slot on the SGS II LTE? I'm reading 32GB but I could have sworn I read somewhere that someone was using 64GB. Can anyone confirm/deny?
32gb is the max
Well, some members of the forums have gotten a 64GB card to work.
Hes right 32 Gb is the max i dont even know if 64 GB cards exist
Sent from my Galaxy Gio
the skyrocket is not compatible with SDXC which is the technology for any SD over 32gb. I didnt try it myself, but samsung does not create drivers for SDXC in the current line of phone. So maybe some supergeek somewhere did create a driver for his phone, but it will not work with yours
EDIT: i have found video proof that a 64gb card works on the GS2 non LTE but it comes with its fair share of problem including camera app not being able to save pictures to it, very slow population of library in music app and a bunch of small annoyances
That's what I suspected - I thought I'd seen something, sounds like it's not worth the effort with the 64GB cards.
Cheers!

64gb exfat

Does anyone have exfat working on the Verizon galaxy S3? I tried formating with the phone but no go. When doing exfat format on windows 7 the phone won't recognize the sd card. Thank you for your help.

Are you using the stock ROM with stock kernel? Any custom kernel will not support Exfat.

What's not working? exFat should work fine on the stock Verizon factory rom, but it should not and will not work on a custom recovery. To add onto the above funnyperson1's comment, custom kernels and custom recoveries will not recognize sd cards formatted to exFat, it must be Fat32.
Windows can't format drives >32GB that's why it failed. You need a third party solution to format memory >32GB to Fat32. Steps on how to do so are here:

VRBLK3 Stock with stock kernel reformatted my snadisk ultra 64GB u1 class 10 SDXC card with no problems. I wanted a clean format for a fresh romantic and it worked without error.
Couple warnings on SDXC and non-stock ROMs and recoveries.
1. Don't use Root Explorer to move files around or create folders on this type of card, not even when formatted FAT32. It doesn't even read the card size correctly.
2. Its been reported several times that TiBu will sporadically not recognize exFAT formatted SDXC cards.
3. Any io speed hacks for external sdcards will cause apps to throw insufficient space errors if you're using SDXC.
4. (And probably the most vexing) The problem with exFAT is that most custom recoveries don't support it (stock recovery reportedly supports it but when uses stock recovery). So that's a burn. On the flip side, SDXC as a standard was built with exFAT as the supported fs. So FAT32 (anything that uses vfat) actually conflicts with SDXC standards. Its not a huge issue, but it can cause small linking errors that will cause windows to want to run chkdisk when it's mounted. Don't run chkdisk if you want to keep your data. Wading through hundreds of ".CHK" files trying to recover lost data for 5 hours is not fun.
I hope twrp will start supporting exFAT on the S3 (I think they have it working on the Note2), also need more kernels to start incorporating exFAT support. Otherwise 64GB SDXC will be a wash for custom ROMs and recoveries.

Yes, this situation is a huge mess. Why they standardized on a closed format like exFAT is beyond me. It's all about the Benjamins, I guess.

Actually, its all about the size and speed.
SDXC was developed to support recording HD video (1920x1080Px30fps and higher).
First up is size:
FAT32 was not built to support file sizes above 2GB, and broadcast quality HD video is about 1GB per minute. You can see the problem there. But that's professional grade HD. Lets look at what our device does, which is roughly 124MB per minute of "full HD" (this is highly compressed). That means anything over roughly 16mins would be larger than 2GB which rules out FAT32.
Second up is speed:
Lets say you have a full 64GB card. SDHC class 10 would max at (in optimal conditions) 10MB/s transfer speed, so it would take almost 2 hours to transfer your data over an SDHC interface. SDXC UHS-I is rated at 100MB/s, so thats about 10 minutes to transfer 64GB over an SDXC interface. NOTE: If you are using an USB card reader that limits you to about 40MB/s in the best scenario, so its definitely faster to use a built in reader than use your phone as a USB card reader.
exFAT does have some serious draw backs though.
1. Totally proprietary to Microsoft.
2. File recovery is crap because there's only 1 VBR in exFAT. FAT32 uses alternating file records, so file recovery is easier.
Conclusion, the SDA's (Secure Digital Association, who owns the SD format) only route to keep up with the HD technology demands, even on a consumer level, was SDXC and exFAT. They couldn't go with any of the more robust file systems because they are mostly not cross platform compatible. NTFS just doesn't go very well on Mac, HFS on Windows is just dumb, and EXT(2,3,4) would just confuse the heck out of your every day end user.
I'm thinking about giving my microSDXC card to someone with a nice digital camera, and buying a 32GB microSDHC class 10 card. FAT32 on SDHC is the standard and won't give me any problems across any platform.
Hope that helps clarify some of the confusion and frustration with 64GB microSDXC cards and exFAT.

I have the 64GB SanDisk SD card... I formatted it in exfat using windows... it shows under disk properties that the format is exfat... But I cant download large files such as 4GB and Recovery with Siyah Kernel recognizes it...? Sorry guys, but what am I doing wrong?
Question?
Hi guys, i have the 64gb SanDisk sd card... I had formatted it EXFAT using Windows 7. My phone (galaxy s4 gt-i9300) recognizes it, but i dont know what is wrong, cause I cant download files bigger than 4GB... And also my recovery recognizes it. I rooted my phone, but if I check the properties of the sd card on Windows it shows that it is on EXFAT? Should I use a different method to format it?
Thanks in advance

Blu Pure XL - 128 GB micro sd not working

Hey guys - today I inserted a samsung 128 gb sd card in my pure xl, but it does not read it - says "sd card is blank or has unsupported file system"
the thing is - i had this card in LG G3 and it worked just fine ... I really don't want to format it and have to move 70 gigs of stuff around ... any ideas?
Thanks
I had the same problem with a 64GB card from an old Samsung phone. Turned out the old card was formatted as exFAT and the Pure XL didn't like it. So I backed up all the files on the PC, let the Pure XL format it to FAT32, restored the files from PC, and it worked fine.

Well I hate to potentially rain on your parade, but the BLU specs list that the SD slot capacity is 64GB. So I am not sure if you would want to try using the 128 GB card in there regardless. I could be wrong though. I have a 64 in mine and it works fine after the required format.
All reviews say 128 GB works in this phone. .. FCUK ... i guess I will have to format .. damn

128 gb will work fine... Actually have seen positive results with the newest 200 go cards you just have to format it fat32 it won't read exfat
Hmm... That could be an issue, for me at least. How would you put files larger than 4 GB on it (like lengthy 1080p or 4K videos) if you can't format it as ExFAT? (I'm considering getting a Pure XL to replace my Galaxy S Relay 4G, but waiting to see what progress is on gaining root access and putting Marshmallow / Cyanogenmod on it.)

Ok, so I understand the part about files > 4GB ... but wanting Cyanogen I don't ...
This is purely personal, but every time I try cyanogen, it does not work ... like basic phone functions - making and receiving calls ... or some other basic thing ... cyanogen is ALWAYS broken ... I'm talking 5 years of giving it a try ... starting with HTC Desire 4G... then original Galaxy Note, then Note 2, then LG G3 ... every time I tried cyanogen, it always had problems that made phone unusable ... [/rant]
PS ... would Pure XL recognize 128 gb card formatted NTFS??? can anyone try / confirm please
I've had no problem with my 200 GB MicroSD card as long as it is formatted as FAT32. exFAT is a proprietary format that costs money to license/use. Thus, the cheaper vendors opt for the free FAT32 file system to save money.
Hey guys. Today I stumbled across a really easy fix for anyone whose Windows PC isn't offering the option to format in Fat32, assuming I'm not the only one who had this issue.
When I tried to format a 128GB MicroSD card, I was only given the options of exFAT and NTFS. I already knew exFAT was a no go, so I tried NTFS. Then I popped the card in the phone and after a moment it offered to format the card to something it could use. It's working like a charm now.

You could try FolderMount as I suggested here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tablet/help/adopting-internal-storage-results-t3297419
As I said I haven't tried the app on MM but I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work but YMMV.
really starting to p me off!!
what is this all about, not bein able to move apps to sd! it seems only certain and few phones allow it now rather than the developers. this is my second phone to have 6.0, the first one i returned because it was only 8 gb internal (which is really only 3,5 after system mem) and i recently have gotten into games, games that mind you can take upwards of almost three gb, i returned it for a lg phoenix 2 16gb only to find out that there is NO option to move to sd, its really a punh in the crotch to buy a phone with 16gb only to have 9 useable gb, after all the pointless crap they force us to have that cant be moved,,,"well root your phone then" everybody says, oh, well, i happen to be one of the few luckies that have alwasys purchased a phone that a rooting method has never been found, and no i refuse to spend 600 bucks on a "popular" phone,, that always has a way to be rooted just to one up my friends, and im too broke this is my fifth unrootable phone, And i cant move my apps? wtf!!!! ive never been an apple man, but this has me knocking on their door..i have researched and tried everything, watched videos and read novels of it being done, some say to format the sd as internal, i say impossible, guess what, no option for that either, only format, no internal. how in the F*** do move my apps, or even better how the crap do i downgrade back to lollipop??????????????????????????????????????????????????????/
I haven't explored with the Shield Tablet (16G is enough for my apps currently, so my SD card is portable storage). But on my Moto G3, Marshmallow removed the ability to move apps to SD unless you've integrated it as adopted (i.e., internal) storage. If the SD is mounted as portable storage apps can't be moved to the card. Again, not positive if this is also the case for the Shield, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Dude, stop complaining and you really need to write clearly so other people can read your post.
Conclusion: there is a way to bypass and use SD card as internal storage, but it is not a good idea.
Here is why:
I have a LG K371, and a G.Skill 64GB microSD with speed class 10. The microSD is not as good as Sandisk's speed class 10, as it read/write at 45/15 MB/s vs Sandisk 80/20 MB/s.
The original 16GB internal storage read/write at about 100/70 MB/s (I don't remember the exact number).
After using ADB command tool, I did successfully bypass and be able to use microSD as internal storage. The process is a bit annoying, because I kept seeing error message and sometimes the phone show "SD card is corrupted". I repeat this process multiple times and did some test with differing configuration.
If I use all the space as internal storage, the speed is about 15/7 MB/s
If I use half the space (so I can use the card on computer), the speed is 13/5 Mb/s
If I use 16GB of space as internal storage, the speed is on 9/3 MB/s.
The speed difference is caused by the special file partition format used for adoptable storage, which can't be access by windows computer.
You see, even with a 64GB speed 10 SD card, the speed drops to 15/7 MB/s. It is as slow as USB 2.0 flash drive.
Not to mention if you use a 16GB SD card, the speed is only 9/3 MB/s, which is intolerably slow.
The real problem is that the phone doesn't recognize the speed difference between the SD card and the internal memory, it still thought the phone is running at 70MB/s. So when it installs apps to the memory or start a game (was supposed to be in the internal memory, but now in the SD card), it took way more time (do the math yourself, 70/7=10). Are you willing to wait for 2 minutes for a game to start, which originally took 5 sec? How about the endless lagging in the app, every thing takes 2 sec to response?
Use Sandisk may get a different speed result, but the user experience in this case will be similar.
So don't force to use SD card as internal storage if the phone's manufacture doesn't approve doing so.
Hope my story help you in some way.

I have nst k1, my tests (samsung pro 64gb) are here:

I don't use adopted storage - I'm waiting for Nougat.
Ps.
Link2sd+ can move obbs to sdcard(external).
@dzpcool
Yours sd card(G.skill) is to slow. I'm using adopted storage in moto e 2nd and it's great idea.

Have you done speed test on the moto e 2 using adopted storage? In you google drive, I saw 2 test pic 81/62 and 47/28 MB/s, can you tell me which sd card and configuration did you use?

Look into my post before(here) and names of screens.
Moto e 2nd 28/21 the same card - adopted(mm&nougat, custom roms).
Tests are somewhere in moto thread.

My bad, didn't check post 8
Whether 47/28 or 28/21 are good, enough for daily use.
I was able to get 20 write with NTFS format. The problem is my LG Phoenix 2 (K371) is just terrible at handling adoptable storage. Considering it is less than half the price than MOTO E 2 (you can even get it $30 with deal), maybe the manufacture doesn't want or pay any effort to support adoptable storage. However, low-end budget phone happen to the one most need extra storage space, cause some of them even only have 8G ROM.
LG is different story, it seem oppose adoptable storage. Even high-end model like G4 doesn't support it in the stock rom.

Lg g2 - you can flash custom rom and use faster sd card.
Lg, Samsung, Sony, Asus, Xiaomi, Huawei...blocked adopted storage.
They want you to buy a newer model with much memory.

Does Moto support it in the stock rom? If not, it seems Google is the only left among the named brand.
A budge phone brand BLU supports it. I guess some brands don't do it because they want you to buy more expensive model with bigger storage, while some want to keep the price competitive.
I don't know all brands.
Lenovo Moto, Htc, Nvidia - have adopted storage support with stock. @dzpcool

Thanks for your reply.
Lenovo bought Moto (Their new phone is great, but the market share is not so great), and HTC is a dying company. I feel little to almost no hope seeing adopted storage on major brand phones : (
