So, I was experimenting with TF and somehow, I managed to edit the media_profiles.xml file found on system/etc folder. I changed all the "3gp" values to "mp4", rebooted the TF and voila! I can now shoot videoes in MP4 format using the stock camera.
Is that really mp4 container or you just renamed 3gp to mp4 and its played by programs smart enough to detect 3gp under 'mp4' extension?
Yes, it's really MP4. Here's the xml file that I edited found in system/etc:

I've recently downloaded a MKV file with subtitles but i can't find the srt file however when it play it with VLC player its there. My problem is that when i convert it to mp4 for my phone the subs are gone! Is there anyway to like make it reappear.
The subtitle (using mkv merge) shows S_TEXT/ASS (ID3, type: subtitles) when i put the mkv in. I tried muxing it but it still doesn't show up when i convert it.
Is there a solution?
I dont think WP7 supports subtitles yet, to tell you the truth subtitles on a mobile device would be tiny and i dont know why you would want to, but that's just me. If you really want the subtitles your going to have to hard encode them into the video which means re-encoding the whole thing again, which means diminished quality.

Did you thought about Hard-Subbing the movie? It's fast and easy.
I had this issue with 720p and 1080 mkv files I downloaded mirroring correctly on my Atrix 2, the video would be jerky.
The problem was because the atrix 2 doesnt play well with 48khz audio.
The following steps will make 720 mkv or 1080 mkv play smoothly on the atrix 2 without any video reencoding, just audio.
It is a two program process, which produces great results.
The first program is MeGUI
The second program is xenonmkv
I attached my atrix 2 presets for megui which you can import into megui if you want to skip all the setting stuff below.
Xenonmkv just changes stuff in the mkv file and turns the file into mp4 which I find plays better on the Atrix 2
Step one, in MeGui, I go to tools and then One Click Encoder, Load the input file,
then show advanced options, under advanced options check keep input resolution, under Encoder options check dont encode video, under audio select NeroAAC, then config, then under sample rate Select Change to 44100 hz , I alse set the audio bitrate to 128kb. I save all these settings as a profile so next time I just load file and click encode and bam done.
If you are doing more then one file just make "and open next" is selected under MeGUI one click encoder.
Once you are done you just go to Queue and click start.
Once all the files are encoded load up xenonmkv, and load the file and click start, itll convert to a mp4 without actually reencoding the video and in the end you have a mkv that plays smooth on the atrix 2.
I hate to post a nooby question but I have searched and searched and cannot understand, or find an answer to my question.
I have a Xoom and several months ago it recorded video in MP4 file formats and stored the files under the "video" file folder in the gallery. Sometime ago it stopped doing this and is now recording video in 3GP and storing the video in the camera folder.
I know that the 3GP is a variant of MP4 but my networked media players do not support the file extension and I do not want to have to edit the files manually.
Why/how did this change and how do I revert to recording video in the MP4 format?
Thanks.
Anyone with some experience can recommend an app?

somewhere in the developer forum there is a modified XML that changes the video recording of the camera to mp4 and boosts its quality. If I recall, though, the variable frame rate that the Xoom records with screws up playback (for me at least) on an Xbox.
Thanks Jeff. I will search it out.

Hey ,
I record a very long video every day and I already use the lowest resolution I can.
The high quality of the camera makes the movies to catch a lot of space
on my phone .
Is there a way to record direct to another format like AVI or WMV format ?
Thanks.
these formats will be bigger than mp4...so...NO
I tried in my computer to convert 1 of the MP4 file to AVI and he reduce the file from 4GB to about 1GB file.
MP4 AVI or WMV just format of container. What matters is the resolution codec and bitrate. You can try to search how to config android camera codec. May be change a configuration xml somewhere. I'm not familiar with it but wish this could help.
So I downloaded a video from YouTube and it downloaded .exo files. Is there any program that converts these files to say an .avi or .mp4 file for viewing on a computer or tv? Thanks, Howie
