Hey guys, im needing some advice on aosp for the thunderbolt. first off i love aosp the only problem i have is mainly some of the sizing on the screen. for example, i use smart keyboard because it just works best for me but when i go to use voice to text feature and it gives me the list of 3-6 things i said, It usually only shows a few words because its so big. ive tried changing font size which eventually creates problems elsewhere. Ive tried using different keyboards but i just cant find one I like other than smart keyboard. I never seems to have this problem on any of my other phones using an AOSP rom. any advice or help? Thanks everyone!

Just to start off the problem I am having is prevalent in all 2.1 stock sense hero roms. There is so much keyboard lag in the sense messaging app that it is pretty much useless. You really can't type the way you want too. Considering I use my phone pretty much for text messaging and music, this has destroyed my opinion of the phone. Sprint was so excited about this phone and gave up on it within 7 months. Considering all contracts last for 2 years (if you want the good upgrade prices), don't you think it would be the ethical thing to do to keep a phone updated for at least that duration. This is a $500 dollar phone that can't text message correctly.
Alright after my ranting now down to the problem. I feel like the #/160 character counter right above the send button is the issue causing the terrible keyboard lag. I rarely do texts over 160 characters so I really don't need this. I remember back in the day of my touch diamond, there was an .xml mod you could do to eliminate the character counter which sped up the texting perfectly. I have no idea how to go through all the .xml's and .pngs of the apks but I figured someone in here could help. Basically I want the character counter to be removed to see if this is the problem. I do have only prediction on, no vibrate or sound, and it still lags out of control. It happens on every sense rom I've tried (and trust me I've tried them all). This does not happen in any of the AOSP based roms such as Cyanogen and Aospmod with the stock android Mms.apk, where there is no character counter. I tried pushing that to my phone an I like it but it just doesn't match up with the rest of the sense, plus it doesn't have the message counter option on the icon which i really like. I pretty much came to this conclusion when i used both of Zen's ports, Aria and MT3G, and I had absolutely no lag when texting. Both roms have different framework i understand which doesn't allow me to push either of the MMs.apk's from either of these roms to my hero stock 2.1. I am using IcedHoneyBun with Zens' any rom Kernel right now but it happened in NfinitiFX's rom too. ONCE AGAIN I NEVER USE VIBRATE OR SOUND so please don't mention that as a fix.
I am posting the Mms.apk below. If somebody can help me I would be glad to donate.
you might want to post this on android central, Beezy420 build icedhoneybun, and he might be able to fix it for you. Although i blieve hes mostly developing for EVO now, he is still around. Post in his honeybun thread.

I know beezy built it but it has nothing to do with the rom. It has everything to do with the stock sense Mms.apk. More hero users use xda than any other site thats why i posted it here.
I *highly* doubt that a simple character counter is causing the delay. First of all, that only makes sense if the keyboard is *completely* lag-free in all other "known-good" apps.
Handcent's text messaging app also has a character count... have you tried that app?
Can you type without any lag in a basic notepad application? Make sure you have all of the same auto-correction and spelling options enabled.
HTC MMS is laggy as hell!!! This isn't "the fix" but it should help somewhat. Turn off ur notifications and auto-retrieve in stock MMS then go into your stock app manager under settings~~>manage apps and force stop Messaging. Now download either Handcent or Chomp from the market cuz they r pretty much the same. Then remove the stock messaging shortcut from your desktop if u have one just so it's outta your way. A good portion of the lag should be gone. Clocking ur cpu higher if u use a clockable kernel will help reduce keyboard lag too.

I mean my keyboard is lag free in any other application except ones that require per letter searching such as google search. I just feel like getting rid of the character counter would help a great deal just because you are absorbing a but of memory after ever letter you type. I really don't know what is the cause. I don't like chomp or handcent i've tried them both. Not as much lag but there is still some lag. I just wanted to see if this was the problem and then go from there.
I would love for someone to pull the counter out of the HTC mms app. I will also gladly donate.
...still willing to donate...
Not possible. I'm using a GSM port of the Legend 2.1 build, and there is no 160 count at all, and it runs no better/worse than the older one. (The only reason it loads faster is because I'm using Zen's Any Kernel)

Except, this doesn't make much sense. MMaybe I haven't used a CDMA ROM in a while, but I distinctly remember the HTC Messaging app always being a bit sluggish.
You should try swype its great and quick as hell! =]
Has nothing to do with what you are saying. My brother has a Droid Eris with the same messaging app and its flawless. Maybe ours will get fixed in the update rolling out

Hello all,
Wondering if someone can help me here...
I have spent a considerable of time modifying the Skyrocket and I must say it was worth it! I do use Go Launcher Pro and it really is quite impressive.
With that said, I do use other screen widgets but do use a few Go applications. One of them that I just installed is Go SMS. I absolutely love this and have set everything just about right. However, I don't like one particular feature and it seem it is simply not possible to change it (for obvious reasons). That is the auto reply option. I've tested it for hours and it does work quite well. Only a couple of times it did not execute. However, what I would like is a way to change that default auto reply text? Is there a way? Yes, I can add some custom text but that default "(From GO SMS auto reply)" still appears. I just can't seem to take it out.
Wondering if someone knows how to do this?
Much appreciated!

I would love to know that, too. Also more text to this auto-reply would be fine ...
You might be better off contacting the go dev team. There might be a way to do it but I am pretty sure if there is no setting for it in the app, you will have to decompile, hack and recompile the app...

Go software is crap. Huge ram usage and way too many cached images. My suggestion is dump go and use something like nova or apex and use handcent if you want a different messaging app. The aosp one is nice, it has popup in cm ROMs

Hi all, I am a newbie to Android device here. Please don't flame me.
I have recently acquired both Nexus 4 and 10. Both great devices. However, I really don't need to scroll around 5 screens. I can't seem to find any settings that allows me to reduce the number of home screens. And according to the forum I read, the only thing I know is to install a what's called "launcher" to provide additional customization which allows me to change the screen. Since I am new to the Android scene, I rather stick to stock everything as much as I can and familiarize myself before I venture too far. So I was wondering if there is anything changed since 4.2.1?
Any insights would be much appreciated. Thanks!
This app will.
This is the only way to do it aside from manually de-compiling the .Apk and editing it, trust me, this is a lot easier and this launcher is just the stock version but with extra options.
Try Apex Launcher or ADW.Launcher both or good.
If you root your device there are roms that have this build in.
for instance my HTC Sensation with ViperS has Sense, and that can add more home pages..
There would be roms that have this feature built in

Doesn't stock launcher do it? Do a pinch in gesture, it will show overview of all screens. Long press on the one u want to remove, it will guide u through rest.
life!
Thanks. I tried the pinch on my N4 but didn't seem to work.

Next launcher is best in the market... try it ... it is fully 3d and developed by go team...
I am using a custom rom and I am glad because I hated all the bloatware in the stock rom but the one thing I miss is that "keyboard" app that when you are typing on the qwerty it generated a little bar of suggestions based on what you had typed. First question can you install that on a custom rom or is it like the circles widget and will only work with stock and if it will work can anyone point me to someplace I can download the apk?
Well I think SwiftKey has similar "suggestions" with what you are looking for...? I'm not sure if any will work with the physical keyboard tho.
I know there are other keyboards with predictive text features but the stock keyboard for the photon Q you dont have to have an onscreen qwerty keyboard on the screen to use it. When the phone is open it appears as just a small sliver at the bottom of the screen enhancing the physical qwerty.
Thank you very very much arrrghhh I decided to check out swiftkey despite you saying you did not think it had the specific feature I was asking for and it turns out it does. So for anyone else with a custom rom that misses the stock qwerty companion swiftkey does everything the stock app does and honestly for anyone using stock i highly suggest swiftkey as a replacement anyway.
Hi Guys,
My second post today.
I am using GBoard but noticed 2 pesky bugs: 1. When typing long messages, for example, in this forum, the keyboard stuck for a minute. Completely stuck and then goes back to normal 2. The correction suggestion is not good at all, sometimes I type a wrong word and it suggests the same wrong word in the correction suggestions which is confusing as it should only display the correct one.
Have any of you experience this?
Also, is there a decent alternative to GBoard? I was always using Samsung's own keyboard but it is not good in HK version so had to switch to GBoard.
I use Swiftkey beta

Yes, sometimes I can't see what I'am typing. It is seems like bug or something but somebody said it is maybe connection with the high refrest rate.
I've used virtually the same Samsung keyboard for 6 years.
Find it very distracting to try to migrate even the colors/shades let alone layout.
I use Samsung themes that support that keyboard look I like.
I also "shop" themes for the theme I like for the phone and texting. Everything else I custom load after those ie icon pack and wallpaper.
Google apps run good, then Google improves them, then Google ruins them.
It's Google's nature.
I have zero faith in Google; Google taught me this time and time again.

I can recommend SwiftKey, works perfectly and we even get a custom Samsung theme only made for us.
I'm using Samsung′s one because it's the only one that supports Your Phone. Plus with keys café it's fully customizable, especially the layout.
SwiftKey, I recommend it every time. If there's a word that is incorrect you can simply long it and remove it from the prediction list.
Customize it to your liking.
My go to customizations: long-press duration mine set to 171
Vibration 2ms, sound off, choode one or create your own theme, size and location, cursor control
Thanks a lot, everyone! Very helpful!
I installed Swiftkey but didn't like it.
After searching play store I ended up installing Yandex Keyboard that looks very much like Samsung Keyboard. Like it so far.
I liked the Gboard Keyboard. It supports local langauage typing as well as one can use the spen to wrtie in local langauage.
Also the Voice support is good.
Still using Swype here. Love it and restore onto every phone using titanium backup.

Me too ;-)
Tried now a couple of weeks Swiftkey, but the recognition rate for "swyping" is still significantly better on Swype. Swiftkey is driving me crazy some times.
