[Q] Stuck somewhere on CWM after flashing several roms - Samsung Infuse 4G

here it goes, i flashed several roms, it goes straight to CWM after samsung logo. Did i mount/unmount sys, blah blah blah... the answer is yes. Have I checked all my drivers to make sure they are working...YES! I opened up ODIN and it will not locate my phone. Oh it must be the usb cord... It cannot be after using several different cords... maybe the port aint working either..lets check *beep* wrong! Everything is in working order... I can get into download mode from the CWM, i can flash whatever the hell i like it will not pass the samsung logo or the CWM. Maybe there is something i can sneak into my sd and a zip file that makes it all working...not possible! so.. i need help.
I cannot go straight to the download mode after samsung logo, it will only boot up CWM red. I can get into green CWM by clicking sd:update.zip which doesnt do much for me or my phone. when i move around in CWM red. it would say no cache recovery log, in the download mode it would say no custom binary.
I would LOVE to get my phone up and running... going on to my second day at it!

Perhaps you can copy a working rom onto the external SD card from the computer and install from zip like that..
Just in put the zip into the SD card, navigate cwm to external_SD and try and load.from that zip..
Not sure.. I'm a noob

I managed to get my phone up and running after million of tries getting the phone to be read by the PC and ODIN.
However, I cannnot download any apps from the martket due to error (-101). I have gotten all my apps back through external SD from the stock file manager.
Should I root the phone again and bypass the market to external SD (rooted apps) and flash a rom and the market will be working?

go to settings/manage applications and look for the market app and uninstall the updates. then you can download apps...
same happen to me when I go to stock, and looking for a root explorer app to download for replacing the recovery file.

I go in there all the time ;-) however I've already uninstall the market (the updates) and downloaded a new one from my external sd and it still says error (-101).
I am getting ready to root the whole 9 yard again, BUT my phone cannot be read once again, it will charge but it cannot be discovered. WHY SAMSUNG GOT to be SO COMPLICATED!?!
I guess the MODs can close this thread, since my phone is up and limping. Thanks for those that "helped" out, right!

Sounds like you're upset, but you're displaying poor attitude.
No one forced you to do anything to your phone.
You choose to make the changes yourself.
Shouldn't you read up more on it before you start?
Did you really think anyone here owes you anything?
Try these:

And this!
It should help.

OH thank you for that google link, my phone is running 100percent now lol.

this is the checklist:
1) have stock
2) have root access
3) install recovery http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y09p-J_g_Rg
have the rom on the sd card...

Anyone able to help with Root ? I picked up a link in a HTC thread on Whirlpool
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1192300
got as far as S Off (Security Off), Updated Clockwork Recovery mod- v4.0.1.4, Now I am stuck on To permanently root your Sensation part 3. When trying to update: When I go to flash clock work/Revolutionary it says: (bad) Can't open Install aborted, though that said some users are having this error and the root is still successful according to XDA however for me I got Root check off the Market and it returns a failed result on Basic and some times a pass on Advanced but some times not. Busybox,Super user,Titanium back up are all saying I'm not rooted to don't have Root permissions.
Have a look at the link below it contains 4 photos of my sensations screen as I went through the process it will no doubt give you a better idea of my problem. It's a link to my blog BTW. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am not a member of XDA so thought I would try my luck here before having to create yet another account somewhere Thank You.
Best look at the photos from bottom to top as they uploaded back to front, order of process is bottom to top.

So did you download this http://forum.xda-developers.com/atta...8&d=1311991644 file and flashed it via recovery?
I have S-OFF and I flashed that file I have full root. I then used ROM Manager to flash clockworkmod (CWM) because ROM Manager doesn't see the recovery that came with the S-OFF.
I just backed up my Telstra ROM. It just finished a minute ago.
Yes I did flash that via Recovery inc. the old su-2.3.6.1-ef-signed.zip AND the new su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip.version I've tried the other couple of suggested methods on that link I posted and nothing seems to be working. Sadly can't see were I have gone wrong.
Here is a link to another two photos with the error message I am getting.

Did you install ROM Manager? I installed ROM Manager and used that to flash CWM and all is working fine here.
EDIT:
My bad. You did say you can't get full root. Don't really know why it won't work for you. Mine worked first go.
Phenomenal MATT
Yeah I have Rom manager but I can't do anything with it everything returns an error.

I just figured that out, my bad. I understand that rooting doesn't stick.
Phenomenal MATT
Sounds like you were one of the lucky ones cause if you read the comments after the steps many people are have minor issues. I'm ashamed to say I've being at it all day VERY FRUSTRATING !!!
Yes I put the ZIP file into 'The Root' of the SD card (Main section of SD Card) and yes in recovery I can see that zip file but when I click open it says:
Can't open /sdcrd/su2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted.
I've tried over 30 times same thing every single time. HEADACHES !!! lol
Sooo looking forward to a solution. I might have to creat a XDA account and post it in the questions section there, looks as though questions are getting answered pretty quick (Good support) ...WITH ALL THAT SAID IF ANYONE HERE CAN HELP I WOULD BE MOST GRATEFUL.

You've probably already tried this, but if not, have you downloaded the su zip again? could it be corrupt?
EDIT: I am really new to Android. Got my phone the day it came to Telstra. You are probably better off on the XDA forums.
Phenomenal MATT
I signed up for XDA but they expect you to make 10 posts elsewhere on their forum before allowing you to comment on the Sensation Dev. one (The comments under the instructions in this link:

Yeah I downloaded it on PC, Mac, Mac with Boot camp, Zipped, un Zipped and even tried the old Zip file it says to try in trouble shouting section then followed buy the new Zip file.
Awwwww Well Patients a vertue ... Hopefully it's all worth it.
Seems like the guy already gave you your answer. Just download the zip again. You probably have a corrupted download. And make sure that signature verification is off in recovery. Should work.
I've downloaded over 30 times on 3 different computers + straight to Sensation as a hard Disk tried Zipped, unzipped you name it... PC - Mac Normal sd card, Micro SD card... & Also like to add Sign. verify is off too tried it on and off, I a award the file needs to be zipped and that needs to be off just trying everything here pulling my hair out.
Do You go CWM > Advance . backup ur Rom ?
I'm using rev. And I go to backup and restore click on back up after its complete 10 minutes later I go and try to get the zipped file but it fails every time.

Finally got it to work. I had to download it from the net with my phone to download folder as opposed to with a pc then moving it to main root folder on SD card. Question is now what ? I want to over clock but I want to keep sense. Do all Roms remove sense ? Leedroid ? What else is recommended now I'm rooted. Btw thanks again everyone for your help.

Thanks for posting this, Phenomenal Matt. I had the EXACT same problem that you posted about. Copying the su zip file to my phone's sdcard while the phone was mounted as a drive did not work at all. I had to download the su zip file on my phone before Clockwork Recovery was able to successfully install it and give me root.

How to replace one file when failing to boot

Hey guys
I screwed up my vold.fstab trying to get "_ExternalSD" back.
Unfortunately! I did not run a nandroid before I made the change.
Now, I can dirty flash my rom on top, or go back to a nandroid from a few days ago, but I'd really just like to recover and go on my merry way. And maybe learn something in the process.
Only thing is, I can't figure out how to access the phone other than the External SD card through CWM.
Can I mount the internal /system and access through USB? Is there some facility to copy a file from one point to another? Any other methods? I guess the phone has to be up to run ADB, right?
I don't know how to generate a flashable zip but I could extract the original version of the file from the original rom. I assume that its non trivial to create a flashable zip, but maybe someone can comment? It looks like there is signing and certificates involved..
thanks for any ideas

this is why i hate it when people make those guides.
messing with the vold.fstab is dangerous (even though its only a few lines) if your trying to recover your data, give up. its not going to happen. (sorry)
when you edit the vold.fstab it messed up the partitions on your internal SD card and most likely did the equivalent of wiped your /system partition. (or another important one.) your actually lucky it did not completely brick your phone.
your post was a little vague, but if you can, just restore an older nandroid, or wipe everything and install another ROM. (you can try dirty flashing but i dont think itll work)
if you cannot access CWM, then follow the steps in This guide. it should get you back up on your feet. after you follow that guide flash a gingerbread ROM (any gingerbread rom will do fine) then you can reboot and flash any ROM you want. (it needs this to fix a quirk in that script)
Hope you get it fixed
EDIT: re read your post, if your feeling adventurous and want to give it a shot, boot into CWM and connect it via usb. you can now get into an ADB shell on your phone by typing 'adb shell' if you have adb all setup and working. (im working from memory here so dont quote me on any of this)
now, you should be able to access your /system folder from that shell. be very careful though, i dont have much experience right here, and if i remember correctly you might not be in the full root directory yet)
if you can get into it try replacing your vold.fstab with a stock one,
if you dont have a stock one lying around, make a nandroid of the current state of the rom, then flash another rom, pull the vold.fstab, then re-restore back to the broken one and restore it (id upload mine but my phone is OOC right now )
after that just reboot and hope it resolves itself, if not then just follow my advice above
and keep that guide i linked to handy, messing around in CWM has the ability to brick your phone, if it does, then just follow that guide.

re read your post and updated my last post right after you posted
after dealing with noobies all day, i forget sometimes people want to try big things
Thanks guys. The info I was missing was there's no special trick to attaching adb while in CWM! Just plug in!
My phone is back up and running and partitions are fine as far as I can see after just booting up.
Hi there! I messed up with the vold.fstab filfe on my tablet – I replaced it with a downloaded file with the intention to transfer apps to my external SD card.
Now my tablet is only showing the startup logo and won’t continue loading. I can access recovery mode. Now I want to restore the original vold.fstab file.
My questions:
1. Using the Android SDK, the file explorer does not show any files, though my tablet is recognized.
2. Using adb push, it yields an error: permission denied, how to successfully push the original vold.fstab and replace the existing vold.fstab?
3. If I dump an image of my tablet and edit the dumped image, would this be easier compared to the steps above?
Thanks!

Mansa_noob, yes, my tablet is rooted. I followed some instructions about adb but had an error saying access denied, and also no files are displayed at file explorer. See my posts above. I also mounted it successfully. I will post some sreenshots later.
Please if you have some instructions, I am willing to try.

Hi twitchyEye, it did not work. It attemps to install (using the install update from ext sd card) but then says installation aborted.
Any more suggestions? Thanks
What recovery are you using? I suck with adb so I got nothing on that front.
It was the stock recovery from my Tablet. I don't have it on hand right now, I will post later. The chipset is RK3066. My problem is my tablet has no official support on the internet (maybe becaue it's still new). Model is Skyworth S71(3G).
I see. Yeah this is over my head man. I thought for sure you were running a custom recovery and it was an easy answer. I'm actually struggling right now with adb myself with a similar issue something about permissions whenever I try to do anything to my phone. So I guess right now would be a perfect time for somebody to chime in with a smarter answer!

I want to try, but the stock recovery is my last hold as I have no stock ROM. If I overwrite the stock ROM, I cannot reinstall it as I don't have a copy of it.
So why not flash cwm with nvflash and then make a backup of your current stock rom? I did exactly that.

Not sure what you mean you couldn't get it to work. The guide is for all the KJ6 One-Clicks. Either way glad you are up and running. You are now on stock. Follow the first link in my signature - where applicable - to get to a custom ROM. No app will do this for you. And you know now NEVER use ROM Manager on this phone.

How/When did you do the back up. The guide I pointed you to - Heimdall One-Click For Dummies - doesn't reference a back up. Also, I assume your music was saved to your sd card. Are you sure it is not still on your sd card?

The soft reboot is likely because you need to go in settings - tweaks - lockscreens and select a custom app.
Maybe connect your phone or sd card to your computer and look on it to see if your music is still there. I don't use stock file manager (use might download a root explorer like Super Manager from tbe market), but if you open it you are likely opening directly into the root of your sd card. Maybe explain that issue more and I can try and help.
Also, there is a VB Q & A thread that you may browse as it has a ton of answers to issues people have had.

I'm now running GingerBread 2.3.3 with a HTC Sesse 2.1

Awesome.. ? for you why did you go back to stock or are you planning to root again?
when i tried to flash the new ROM from ROM Manager...it left my Phone in a wierd state and i was not able to access Gmail or Play Store.
This is the first time i tried to root and Flash a new ROM and i am not exactly sure about the recovery process. So i decided to RESET everything. I am now looking into more videos and articles and videos to get familiar with the process. I would certainly try rooting again ASAP.

Well I never used the Rom manager aka clock work mod to flash a rom. Alway down load it and drag n drop to the sd card and boot into recovery mode and flash but you have to have cwm first and flash it to the recovery mode which there fore allow you too boot up into recovery with out issues.
Well once you do root again look me up. I can help with some basic info if I get time I can post or message you with some steps that I do that could help you out.

Hey no worries.. once you flash roms and get into kernels scripts etc its not all that bad
My Inspire
So this is an idea of what I do when I flash a rom and some other ideas/tips.
Getting Started or Flashing A Rom:
Once you root your phone (this is not in any order really) you should get ROM Manager aka Clock Work Mod. Once you get that, open the CWM and the first top half you will see flash clockworkmod recovery make sure your on wifi I would at least for the updates. You will see a dialog box click desire hd. This will allow you to make back ups of your settings that you made when you flash a rom its always a good idea to make your backups its a life save!! So, once you made your back up and this is what I do.. I plug in my phone to the pc switch to disk mode which will let you see whats on your sd card. Since you flash the CWM and recovery you will see on your sd card a folder called clockworkmod open then backups folder you will see you back that you made, drag and drop that backup file that you made to your fold that you made on pc to save it for later. And thats pretty much how I save my backups of roms etc.. Now if you need to load that back up just plug phone in disk mode cwm fold>backup drag and drop back up that you need. And boot into recovery mode and select back up and restore and select restore and the file boot and your good..
I would download which Rom I would like to use. Save it to pc to a folder that I have made that I store all my roms, backups, radios & rils, kernels..etc.. just to keep myself organized. Once you get your rom just drag and drop it to the ROOT of the sd card do NOT add it in any folder thats on the sd card. Once you have it on the card just boot into recovery flash your rom.. Other then that its easy to flash the rom.. And when you get all your settings set up make a back up and when done save it to the pc and delete it from the sd card if you dont want to keep on the card I do that..
When it comes to battery life it depends on what the rom.. But I like to use killers http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305228&highlight=killersolth scripts for the kernels.. For me I always flash a different kernel upon flashing a new rom. For me having the kernel and killers script is the best combo for me to have for performance and battery life.. now since I have inspire I use the uv lites scripts.
For the most part flashing radios & Rils you would never really need to do that so I wouldnt recommend it for now maybe later but read about it its good to know what it does..
Other sides which I for got to add.. When you flash a new rom its always good to wipe user data.,cache, delvik it makes it for a good clean install with other roms..
Also the desire HD thread which the inspire can use the roms from that thread to.
Well I hope this helps you in any way.. if you need help PM me best of luck

[Q] How to flash a rom after rooting

OK I apologize ahead of time for what is probably a ridiculously easy question for most.
The ATT 1X is my first android and this is the first phone that I've rooted.
I read for hours and followed the instruction to a T. I rooted, unlocked the bootloader and installed CWM.
I can get into Recover/Boot mode or whatever you call it on phone startup, I have the Super user icon in my files, but I have no idea what to do now.
I found a ROM that I thought was worth a shot (CleanROM 2.5) but I don't know what to do. I've read and researched for hours now and everyone's problems seem to be complicated but no one talks about this.
I downloaded the ROM to my computer but I don't know what to do with the files, I can't find a .bat file or anything to initialize it and I am stuck.
I've wiped the data and done everything in the steps but I'm stuck at actually installing it. I know I'm obviously doing something wrong but I feel like I'm very close to what needs to be done.
Any help is welcome, thanks

I recommend you check QA thread found in a sub forum under your devices section and you review the stickied post for ROM install or Google "android install custom ROM " (remove quotes). Too much info on this already to type it all back out here. Did you watch you tube newb video you agreed to have watched when getting an xda account?
Essentially you now made it so your phone has the ability via CWM Recovery to now boot to that to install ROM zip or continue to use rooted stock ROM (how you flashed that zip for superuser is baasically same as how you flash a cwm compatible ROM zip (MOST but not all ROMs)) which with SuperUser can now run privelleged code if it is made to or requires it to run.

Thanks. I know this must seem so stupid, but I've been searching this forum, google, youtube and pretty much everything else for how to do this and I get it all and understand what's happening.
I just don't know where to put this ROM (which folder) to get it to install.

So after all that searching you never came across instructions informing you to put the zip on your phones storage?
You should probably just hold off a bit on flashing anything then. Not being mean but it sounds like you are confused by the process and end result. Step back and do some basic checklisting.

Download the rom you want and DO NOT UN ZIP IT. THEN PLACE THAT ZIP ON PHONE STORAGE AND BOOT INTO YOUR CUSTOM RECOVERY . HIT INSTALL FROM SD CARD AND MAKE SURE THE ROM YOU DOWNLOADED IS LISTED BUT DONT FLASH YET. GO BACK THE THE MAIN SCREEN OF RECOVERY. NOW MAKE A BACKUP. WHEN THAT IS DONE GO BACK TO MAIN RECOVERY SCREEN AND HIT WIPE PHONE DATA AND THEN CONFIRM. THEN GO AND HIT CLEAR CACHE OPTION. THEN GO BACK AND GO TO ADVANCED AND CLEAR DALVICK CACHE. NOW YOUR READY TO FLASH. GO TO INSTALL ZIP FROM SD AND FLASH YOUR ROM. FIRST BOOT ALWAYS TAKES LONG AFTER FLASHING A NEW ROM

Been posting on the internet for decades, don't worry about being mean. I'm here to learn. I rooted, unlocked the bootloader and installed CWM so that I could take advantage before the phone asked me to update the software to the 1.85 version.
My phone works fine now, and I did everything correctly which is what I was setting out to do. I'm in no rush to flash a ROM, but now that I'm ready I'm itching to try it out.

This is the process as I understand it and as stupid as it sounds, I'm hung up on where in phone storage to place the zip file of the rom. I don't see a storage folder, an SD folder, nothing that seems obvious and nothing that is in any of the things I've been reading or watching.

Plug phone into computer. When prompted, select Disk Drive. On computer, browse to your computer, open the 'disk drive', and copy the zip there. THAT is your sdcard as seen by your phone.

Seriously?
Wow I feel dumb. I was looking for a sub folder or directory specifically for storage and backup.
Thanks, I think that should be enough for me to do this tonight.

Yeah, some phones you may have to drag down notifications and tap USB mode or USB connected notification (it has standard USB icon and only appears when phone attached to computer). Then tap either USB storage mode or the button to enable USB drives. Then on computer just like a thumb drive it adds drive letter. Copy anything there that is /mnt/sdcard or /sdcard on phone. BE SURE TO EJECT DRIVES BEFORE AND TAP TO DISABLE USB ON PHONE IN THAT ORDER THEN UNPLUG FROM USB (failure to do so COULD result in data loss or corruption which you DO NOT want to happen to a ROM zip)!
Then boot in to recovery choose install zip from sdcard (not apply update from sdcard) as install from allows you to browse for any zip and install. Usually Vol up and down moves through menus and power or search button is enter. BE SURE THE ROM YOU DOWNLOAD IS SPECIFICALLY MEANT FOR YOUR DEVICE OR YOU COULD EASILY BRICK YOUR DEVICE. PLEASE REVIEW HOW TO RUN NANDROID BACKUPS AND RUN ONE BEFORE INSTALLING A DIFFERENT ROM.
I CAN NOT STRESS ENOUGH IF UNSURE DON'T PROCEED, BE SURE YOU RUN NANDROID BACKUPS AND ENSURE YOU FOLLOW INSTALL DIRECTIONS INCLUDED WITH YOUR ROM. ALSO, NEVER FORMAT EMMC (AKA INTERNAL SDCARD) IT ALMOST GUARENTEES A BRICKED DEVICE.

Is all good, and now you see why we were kinda scratching our heads wondering what was up a little . Glad we could help get you going though welcome to the world of custom ROMs. Please just be careful and always do backups and take it slow and read things 2x before even attempting once. While it can be easy to do it is also easy to accidentally brick your device (make it not work and have to be sent out for repairs).
