is there way to prevent the wifi from turning off every time the screen goes off.
Not so far as we know, yet. However, there *is* a search button, which would let you find the many instances of people asking exactly this question...

LOL yep, you're right.
That said, Google and Bing both do a just fine job of indexing this site (arguably better than the built-in search tool) and have the bonus of, unless you specify site:xda-developers.com, also searching the rest of the web...

So I've been looking at all the various "lost phone" apps for Android.. it seems there are quite a number of viable options.
But one feature none of them seem to talk about is whether or not you can use the tracking tools from another mobile!
I'm usually out with my friends or family; if one of us lost our phone, it would be an incredible inconvenience to go home, get on the computer, and start trying to track down the phone then.
Do any of these apps have the ability to easily lock/wipe/track/etc. your phone from another phone? (I'm not referring to the SMS control of course, that's obvious. I mean like a Google Maps interface so I can easily track down the phone.)
Or, any of them whose websites work well enough from a mobile browser to fit this purpose?
Thanks!
Aiieee I thought I posted this in Q&A... Please don't hate me for screwing up my first post, haha...
Edit:
And I just noticed, this is in GENERAL General.. should be in Android Q&A. Derp derp..
How dare you post this over here. Lol. Welcome to the forums.
Avast Mobile Security can be controlled via a text from another phone. Also, if you install Dolphin browser HD and you switch to desktop view I dont see why you wouldn't be able to access the desktop version of websites.
I'm using Where's My Droid and you can use any messaging or smart phone to access your misplaced or lost phone. Texting the missing phone with preprogrammed phrases can ring the phone, return a Google Map location, or even wipe the phone's internal and SD memory. Another one I use is Mobile Recovery from Asurion which is the company that I have phone insurance with.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
Check out cerberus. It is free for a week for testing and can be controlled from desktop or another phone. Does all you want. Search YouTube for "cerberus android". There is a great video that is 21:36 minutes or about that long.

Ooh. If you buy it is a one time fee of like 4.99 Euro. It is not a subscription.

I'm sure many of you have seen this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1749045
I was wondering if anyone had an idea on how to get this working on a sense based rom?

Have you tried it out yet? I'm gonna give it a shot right now and see what kind of results I get.

Well! That was interesting, and certainly we have some hope for our Sense ROMs.
The installation process went flawlessly, and I was able to add the Google Search widget from JellyBean. And it works! Well, mostly. The Voice Search doesn't work. When you go into the app and hit the microphone icon, it beeps and immediately tells me "sorry, didn't catch that." I'm going to try and update my Voice Search app to the JellyBean one, although now I'm venturing off the beaten path.
I'm not really sure how the rest of Google Now is supposed to work, so I can't yet verify how much of this is working and how much isn't.
---------- Post added at 03:11 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:30 PM ----------
Alright, I've got Google Now working on CleanROM 4.0SE!
Voice Search is broken, and some other things, but that's the same story for other users, even on AOSP.
To get it working, go here and follow the instructions in the first post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28226043&postcount=1 (same link as OP)
Then, in the same thread, jump to page 15 and follow the instructions in the second post down, #142 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=28234189&postcount=142)
Nice find!
EDIT: A more active thread is in the Development forum, for anyone who's stumbled upon this.
awesome work man, appreciate you trying it out and everything. I was at work and didn't really have time to mess around with it at the time
How does an itinerary look on your note with the new gmap?
For me half of the screen on the left is covered by the list of directions, leaving only the half right visible.
Is it normal? Totally useless...

I can't believe there's no one using gmaps here or at least willing to drop a couple of lines to confirm.
Thanks anyway.

I just tried it. And I thought it was going to be great until I tried to exit out of the box on the left so as to see the map. when you hit the X you can no longer see the map WTF.

If you could just close the itinerary it would be fine. But as it is it sucks.

well it seems it's a general complain...
- the directions take half of the space
- no way to use intermediate stops
- no more my maps
- if someone creates an itinerary with intermediate steps in OLD version of web gmap and you try to open it on the tablet, the intermediary steps are ignored
- if someone creates an itinerary with intermediate steps in NEW version of web gmap and you try to open it on the tablet, it open the browser and not the map
Greetings, XDA Assist!
I want to know if there is a way to restrict internet access to an Android app *ONLY* when it is opened.
For e.g, if I want to hide my last seen on WhatsApp, I switch off my WiFi/Data, and open WhatsApp -> Reply to the messages -> Close Whatsapp -> Turn Data on.
Is there a way to restrict internet access to only certain apps when they're opened, and regain access when they're closed?
It would be of great help if you direct me toward a solution, maybe a Tasker profile?
P.S - Classic XDA Lurker. Lurking for two years. Joined recently. You guys are brilliant. Keep up the good work!
Thanks in advance!
Hi there!
Depending on root or not, there's different option available
In your situation, I'd personally use Greenify
Or some custom ROMs have App Ops built in. You can select permissions on a per app basis. I don't think its quite what you're after in this case.
See if Greenify suits your needs. Read about it in the opening post in the thread I linked. ?
Good luck!!
---------- Post added at 12:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:09 PM ----------
And no, I don't think your example is going to hide last seen. As soon as you read or post anything, I'm sure it'll make you last seen. No matter how you try to hide it. As soon as you do download or upload. .. It knows you were on. Nothing will change that.
---------- Post added at 12:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:13 PM ----------
Yes, I misunderstood your goal. You want the opposite of what I was thinking.
If the app is open and no data or WiFi...the app will not function while you use it.
If you don't want people seeing your presence on social apps....you'd have to not use them. Lol
Take care.

Thanks for the reply!
I'm aware of Greenify and my ROM does have App Ops.
I wanted to know how to automate it ONLY when you open the app.
Open Whatsapp -> App stops accessing internet (OR) WiFi/Data gets switched off. [Preferably former]
Close app -> Regains internet access.
Something similar.
I'm sorry, I searched Google and XDA....found nothing like what your after. Lots on keeping it off data when closed....but not open. Again....you can toggle airplane mode on, then open it and test your theory...but I doubt it will have your desired results.
Here's a tasker guide, you can check it out, or ask in the thread perhaps.

Good luck again!

Doesn't seem to do anything on my G2. GUI etc works I suppose, but doesn't do anything to TV, DirecTV etc.
If I hold the IR sensor before a camera I can see that there is something sending.. I will have a look on it today again.
I've fixed the problem! It's now working.

How does this fare on Aosp roms?
You need to test it. You defenitly need to install a Quickremote SDK but anyway. For me it wasn't working because the SDK I used wasn't able to send raw IR pattern..
You need to test it and if it doesn't work search for a SDK that support it. (I didn't find one so I'm back on stock) [emoji53]
Is there an updated link for the fixed apk? Would like to try this out
It's the same link like before

Yep, I did a quick test on my DirecTV box and it toggled power. Now to figure out how to actually use it.. I guess you draw your own layouts, plugging in available buttons. I haven't looked beyond the raw database yet.

I guess I must be stupid but I cant figure out how to do anything except send a code from the list. Can't make a layout, and not quite sure how the HTML thing works.
