How to root TF101 B90 on stock ICS(US) - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
I figured out how to root Asus Transformer TF101 B90 running on stock ICS (US version), but I'm not sure about B70 or B80
PLEASE Follow these steps, but as everyone says I'm not responsible your tablet, so do it on your own risk....
1) Install Android SDK (lookup on youtube and there is a video guide as it is)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UF5w1dKe2U
2) On tablet Go to setting -> development -> and select USB debugging
3) On tablet Go to setting -> security -> select Unknown Sources
4) On tablet Go to setting -> Accounts & Sync -> turnoff Asus Sync and Uncheck "Run/turn on Asus Sync" option
5) on XDA search for "ViperMOD" and download it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21007398
6) Dont have to install drivers if you have installed ADB(Android SDK) from step 2.
7) Now turn off anti-virus/internet security (mostly not required but just in case)
8) Run "viperMOD PrimeTime v4.5" which you downloaded (step 5).
9) read the options properly and choose "step 1" other steps dont work..!! (rooting process will restart the tablet once or twice, so dont worry).
10) IMPORTANT " DO NOT INSTALL CWM, SUPER USER OR BUSY BOX from "ViperMOD Primetime v4.5".
11) Go to the link below and download CWM directly into your tablet. Once you have downloaded install and run it and its a one click CWM installer and this will give you root and CWM.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346180
After step 11 you should have root and CWM on your tablet below steps are for flashing a latest version of CWM and desired ROM
12) Now goto market and download and install "OTA Root Keeper" and "Titanium Backup" in this order.
13) Run titanium backup and back up user softwares. (Remember to give superuser permissions")
14) Now go to the link below and download latest CWM to your laptop.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213723
15) Now turn off your laptop and push down power and volume down buttons together and as soon as there is a recovery option press volume up botton and that will take you into recovery.
16) Install latest CWM and restart the tablet.
17) now download the ROM you want from the forum and copy to MicroSD.
18) Get back into recovery and do a clean flash of the ROM and you are done.
I know it looks very long to read but steps wise its very easy..
I have the root and currently running Revolver ICS Beta on my TF101...
BIG SHOUT OUT TO
jcase for "Nachoroot"
Roach2010 for "CWM"
baseballfanz for " pointing me towards "ViperMOD"
Viperboy for "ViperMOD"
brk for "toolkit v7.1 universal"
without you guys i would have been stuck with crappy stock ICS

Step 11 needs to be cleared up a bit. Not sure exactly what I'm supposed to do. It says
11) Go to " Razorclaw and down load " CWM from the link given there
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1427838 .
I already have Razorclaw installed but when I open the app it says the device lacks the needed file. No idea what that means. I'm not sure if that's what I'm even supposed to do though. I don't see anything about CWM in that link you posted or even anything on Razorclaw in that link unless I'm missing something. What exactly am I supposed to do for step 11?

I have changed the steps and i hope its clearer, but basically what im telling is download CWM from the link given and run it and not only install.
this is the link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213723
Btw razorclaw doesnt work anymore, so dont bother about it. ViperMOD will root your tablet so "razorclaw" is not needed... all you need is "CWM" from the above link.. Hopefully you got my point.

Thanks Dude
OK worked for me just fine after a day of no joy --you saved my ass I did have to factory reset after updating to 9.2.1.17 without using root keeper bet I don't do that again

Big Thanks! Worked on my Slider without any hiccups.

i am dead !
i am the lucky one, who
a) has tf101g
b) has CWM 5.5.0.4
c) has no rom
d) has no recovery files/roms on internalSD
any suggestions?

Do you have adb working? You could push the files to internal sd.

5800xm user did you install a different ROM? If so may I ask which one? I just purchased the slider and have been looking for a way to root it. Have you had any issues since you performed this method? Is this the best way to root the slider?

Sorry for very late reply as i never bothered to look at this thread... I would advice you to put all your required files onto internal memory and access CWM and flash from there as CWM v5.5.0.4 wont allow you to access external MMC... If you have already already solved your issue then forget this

[Q] Latest and Greatest Root steps for WiFi ONLY XOOM

My apologies if this post is a dup, but I'm havin a hell of a time trying to find the proper steps to root the WiFi only XOOM i have hangin out next to me.
I am seeing a ton of posts about rooting the XOOM, with a good bit of them telling me different informationDated 27 April 2011)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1010568&highlight=rooting+wifi&page=17 tells me to download the WiFi only image (Tiamat 1.3...), but then later tells me to download the Tiamat 1.4 images. [scribbi, my apologies for using your post as the example. But your post got me second guessing myself a little bit...(mostly cus I'm paranoid)]
I'm sure I am just second guessing myself over nothing, but just to be sure...
Is there a GOLDEN set of steps (or sticky), as of 27 APRIL 2011, that can give us (concerned rooters) the proper steps for rooting the WiFi only XOOM such that we can follow without minimal concern for the well-being of our tabs?
(I'm an embedded SW engineer, so I understand the repercussions of what I'm doing, which is why I'm to double checking the procedures before I attempt something that may brick my hardware)
Thanks for your time and mad props to everyone that was part of the effort to root this device. I wish I could code as well that they can.
I still do it the old fashioned way. I'm already unlocked so I just flash the boot image. With a clean system partition, you need to push a few drivers (.ko files) on plus "su" and the Superuser.apk. Superuser and su work together. And finally you need to create a new folder so that your real sdcard can be mounted. I think they changed the name from "sdcard2" to something new in 1.4.0.
Not exactly step by step but you can see which instructions that mirrors most.
New instructions involve CWM which I have not installed yet. I like to know what's done step by step as I have a Canadian system.img. I don't want that flashed over.
you could use the "one click" method found in the dev section. its really like a one click at a time, but goes slow so you can read and see what's going on. if your not comfy with adb I would suggest this method. then update the kernel with the kernel manager app.

I don't trust the "one click" methods. Me, I need to know how every part works together and what every step does. I'm more comfortable with using adb and fastboot manually than I am with someone's idea of user friendly. I'm also the kind of guy that would fix his own car rather than have a mechanic fix it for free.
I should take a look at it. The way you describe it, it almost sounds like a batch file.
Also, when I understand what's going on, I can apply the steps in different situations. For example, most of the instructions here are for a PC but I can do exactly the same things with my Mac Mini when my PC isn't convenient.
OK, let me propose one of the root method which is not required to flash any boot image but is required to flash ClockworkMod Recovery and to use the recovery for rooting.
Such method (i.e. using custom recovery) may work not only on WiFi US model (which I have), but also on other models (Verizon, WiFi Europe etc). But I tested it on WiFi US.
So the step by step are:
1. Install ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.2.5 as described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1038870
This actualy means that you need to unclock bootloader and flash ClockworkMod Recovery.
2. Download attached Root_Xoom.zip file and put it on SD card
3. Insert SD card into Xoom
4. Boot Xoom in the recovery mode
5. In ClockworkMod Recovery menu choose "install zip from sdcard" and "choose zip from sdcard" and install Root_Xoom.zip
6. Reboot Xoom
Hope you will have Root after that.
ok so since I'm not currently rooted it looks like this should work for me. Gonna give it a shot in a little white once I get me some courage juice...

This is for rooting only (as OP requested). It is just to push su binary and superuser.apk into system partition. Nothing else.
after that, get kernel manager and install 1.3.2 for oc, sdcard etc.... 1.4.0 isn't stable is it?
Yes, if you need oc, sdcard etc..., you can flash the kernel you like. It can be done after or before kernel flashing.
Do you have to have an SD card to CWM/root your Xoom?
Yes, you need SD card. CWM installs file from SD card to make root

Its says in the install description to "Place the recovery zip on the sdcard where clockworkmod can read it" surely this meas that clockwork recovery mod already needs to be installed???
You must first root your transformer and then install CWM. I used NVflash method and found it very simple. Good Luck!

I am also trying to work out how to install CWM... people saying 'just install CWM' really don't help.
I have used the scripts but they don't install CWM on b70 revisions... however i have root and therefore the required access. I am looking for a way to install CWM myself.

If you have root, means that your b70 isn't one of the new batch, so you can easily install cwm.
How have you rooted your tablet? You can install cwm in one of the following ways:
1- mashi's script: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125714
the file cwm.bat will install... guess what?
2- brk's script: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1185104
download the correct version for your device (ww or us or tw), then launch the batch script. The first option is "Install root and/or cwm recovery".
3- my script: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198303
Burn the cd, reboot your pc and launch "Universal root for ASUS TF101"
so 'just install CWM'

[Q] What should I DO

Hey all
So i had my transformer for a while no, since the summer.
my version is 8.4.4.5.2 i never pushed an update couse i knew that eventually i will root the transformer
What kind of root methods do i have in order to root it? do i need t oupgrade the version or the stock?
my kernal version is 2.6.36.3 and it still on 3.1
and then what kind of rom should i install?
Thank you all for answering the question
Just look in the development forum and all your questions will be answered within 3 to 15 minutes.

Becoming root on most recent version is still possible with Nachoroot/Vipermod.
No reason at this moment not to update because of root.
If you have serialnumber <B70 you can always become root by using nvflash.
the thing is what i see in the development is for stock roms with version 8.6 and others
i don't find any reference for the 8.4
so i am confused for what i need to do
a
oh and my serial begin with B60
I saw the Razorclaw and Nachoroot methods. but as i mentioned they talk about 8.6 versions.
should i use the nvflash then?

NVFlash will wipe all of your data but it is fine to use other than that. otehrwise just upgrade to the .21 or .19 (not sure which) and use nachoroot
If you want to root, install CWM and install ROMs without having to connect to a PC, upgrade to the 8.6.5.19 or 8.6.6.19 (depending on if you are TF101 or TF101G respectively).
Download Razorclaw apk (google it, it comes right up)
Download RecoveryInstaller apk (can be found on this site with a quick search)
Download Titanium Backup from the market.
Download whatever ROM you wish to flash (I suggest go with Krakd or Revolver) and put that file on your external SD card in the root.
Install Razorclaw, click "Root me nao!"
MAKE A BACKUP with Titanum Backup (launch, give it superuser permission and unknown source permission, press settings key and choose 'batch', find "RUN Backup all apps + data" and run that, it will create a folder called 'titanum backup' on your TF internal, leave it there it will be fine.)
Launch "RecoveryInstaller" and click "Install Recovery"
Now you are rooted with CWM recovery, although it is an older version, once rooted and CWM'd it is easy to flash the newer recovery (called Rogue XM) and now you can flash your ROM of choice, reinstall titanium backup and run "batch"-"RUN Restore all apps + data"
IMHO, I would rather be able to flash and mod from the device itself rather than through ADB from a PC..then you have to deal with drivers, pc software, etc. and I don't know about you but my PC isn't even as fast as my TF. So using it is a 'last resort'.
I have used the method above more times than I could count. And, honestly, I think it is more user-friendly for noobs.
Hey thanks for the replies
is there any big difference between rooting through the adb or using an app?
lets assume my PC is fast enough to do all these things
I m just curiud to know that?

I recently sold my galaxy note for 400 but the kid only had 375 but gave me his sidekick as well.
And I want to know what i need to do in order to instal Glorious Overdose or w/e.
What exactly should I do? Do i need to root it first? Or something else?
Please give me a nice list of what exactly I need to do , and in what order.
Also any recommendations for what to instal.
Thank you.

You need root to install a custom ROM in all phones. This post might be helpful:
eMJaaay said:
Firstly you need root. Then you have to move a custom recovery to your phone's /system to allow you to install unsigned packages. You can do this using root explorer (paid app, but its the most simple and easy way of doing it) or you can do it using. You also need to have a custom recovery file, the update.zip which when you hit reinstall packages (given you pushed the custom recovery file to the phone's system) would bring up clockworkmod recovery. In clockworkmod recovery, there are many options, one of them being mounts and storages. Going on to that option will bring up your mounts and storages, where the most important one you need to check is SYSTEM which should always say UNMOUNT. If it says MOUNT SYSTEM, click on it and it should say UNMOUNT SYSTEM.
For ROOT, use SuperOneClick. You can download the file here -> link (scroll to the end of the post). I used version 2.2 and everything worked fine. Look at this guide by ayoteddy for more information -> link. You need to choose psneuter as your exploit. Windows detects this app as a virus so make sure all your anti-virus / firewall software is off. If it doesn't work, try and try again. Change USB cables and try some more!
Read the noob guide here -> link. Its REALLY good and gives you a step by step of how to root / get custom recovery and install custom ROM.
Go here -> link. For more in depth information about getting a custom recovery. And here -> link. for Krylon's recovery files (links on his thread aren't all working).
I recently rooted and got custom recovery and installed a fresh ROM (GOV 3.2) and all I can say is, be patient and follow everything step by step and you'll be fine. I'll also advise you to partition your SD card BEFORE installing a ROM just to be safe, because I've heard some people having issues with it. I did it and had no problem, but again I don't know if this is a placebo or actually helped. After installation / rebooting, etc ... don't touch your phone for a couple of minutes. If you reply in the appropriate threads, I'm sure someone will help you out if it doesn't work.

When it gives that message it usually means you haven't correctly pushed recovery to your /system. You can only push recovery after you have successfully rooted (get a free root checking app from the Play Store to check). Once you've rooted, you need to push the recovery file you get after you extract the recovery zip from the download links I've sent. You can move it from the root of your SD card to your phone using adb or root apps such as root explorer (very simple, but its a paid app). You also need to download the update.zip file from the link I sent (same place you downloaded the recovery file) and put it at the root of your SD card (don't unzip it). That should work!
Ok thanks . I'm going to try this now.

[TUT][ROOT+CWM+GAPPS]InFocus M512 Root, CWM and GApps tutorial.

So there is a bargain chinese 4G phone called the 'InFocus M512'.
The problem with it is that it comes without Google Apps and also is not rooted (sometimes is). Also it does not have CWM Recovery.
So this quick tutorial shows you how to root, install CWM Recovery and install google apps on the M512.
I'm not responsible for any damage
Rooting:
Method 1
1.Go to settings>>Security>>Check Unknown Sources tap OK.
2.Download this file.
3.Install
4.Run and tap 'get root' or somthing like that.
5.Delete KingRoot and some chinese app, but DO NOT DELETE KingUser!
6.Done!
Method 2
Flash CWM Recovery using the 2nd method from this post. If you have rooted usign the first method use method 1 from that post.
Download UPDATE-SuperSU-x.xx.zip (i used 2.46)
Reboot into CWM.
Select Install zip>choose zip from /sdcard>select UPDATE-SuperSU-x.xx.zip, press power button
Reboot now
GApps
1.Download this zip file
2.Reboot into CWM.
3.Select Install zip>choose zip from /sdcard>select the file, press power button
4.Reboot now.
How to delete KingUser (only if you have SuperSU and it is working)
Download ES File explorer, enable root explorer, go to /system/app and delete KingUser.
So this is how to get root, cwm and gapps on the m512.
First Method no good for me
I put the kingroot file in the adb tools folder and used the install command. It wasn't clear from the above whether the phone needed to be in recovery or some other mode so I tried a few times, in recovery mode and again just connected as an mtp device in the normal way. Either way the result was the same, it said "Invalid APK File: KingRoot.......".
I will have a go at the CWM thing next.
I am still on the 103A ROM that the phone came to me with - I have been trying, on and off, without success to update and then root it , for months.
When trying to flash an update ROM it tells me that the update package has unexpected contents and the there is an error in the update file and then says "Status 7". You can read all about my lack of success on this forum under the threads M512 started by Galaxy Why.
I'm trying, I really am....
Let me start by saying thanks for making the effort to post what you know and so to help people like me, however.
I tried to follow the method 2 (as I don't have root) from your other post (the one linked to above with the words "the 2nd method from this post" but got stuck.
Your instructions in normal my comments in italics.
Method 2: (No root)
1.Connect your phone via USB to your PC. OK
2.Enable MTP. OK
3.Enable USB Debugging. Settings>Developer Options> tick USB Debugging. OK
4.On your computer, 2 drives will appear: One of them is a CD-Rom which contains all drivers. OK
5.Click on that CD-Rom and it will install all drivers. It doesn't, or it may do, but what it definately does is asks me to put a disc in the drive and tries to do some kind of dir_all in windows explorer - I would post a screenshot here but this page only allows URL's- and I'm not sure how to go about that.. but I think I've managed to upload a screenshot....
After waiting for 5 minutes or so to see if something would happen as the green progress bar ground to a halt but the busy circle continued I hit the cancel button on the "please insert a disc dialogue" and then ploughed on anyway ....
6.Plug phone in again. Now this had me confused, I assume you mean unplug AND THEN plug the phone in again.
7.Download the .ZIP file and extract it somewhere. Which/what zip file do you mean exactly?? I couldn't get past this.
8.Click on _install_cwm_6.0.5.1.cmd
9.Your phone will ask you something, just tick "always allow from this computer" and hit OK.
10.Your phone will reboot into DL Mode, then it will reboot again.
11.Recovery is installed.
It's late and I'm tiring so sorry if missed something obvious. Any advice?

Looks like you don't have a adb driver
And... why do you want to root your phone? Installing CWM is not root required.
M512 comes with a unlocked bootloader, just boot into bootloader and you can flash anything you like.
I made a customized stock rom based on version 2280, bloatwares removed and Google Play framework included. (You can download the apps back from Play Store, if you needs those)
Now the phone has 2.09GB free spaces :victory:
If you were interested on it, I can upload it and give you a link.

I am interested in the custom rom you made for this phone. There's so little info on this model.

Flash this ROM by a "3rd party recovery" = CWM
