It is not at all possible.

You can flash T-Mobile phones over to the Frawg wireless plan and have 3G. I have done it on many phones and they work perfectly.

When I was in Canada this past January I was using Fido and it's not possible to get 3G, the P999 phone doesn't support the wireless band and that's a hardware issue.
Mobilicity works great, though.

I have my own business and I can do that for any phone. Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile. I cannot tell my secret. But I can do it and it cost $175.00 to flash it over.

Do you replace the radio? Write your own baseband? Both? Because that is the only way I know of to do this. This phone doesn't support the bands required on the hardware.

A few of us are working on enabling the other bands and, if we do, it won't cost you a cent to do it. So far, we've been able to get the phone to recognize other networks such as Bell and Telus but not been able to get on; me because I don't have a Bell or Telus SIM to test it. FRAWG uses CDMA 800/1900 which is very limited. The G2X is not compatible and never will be with FRAWG. The phone must be a CDMA phone and, if it isn't purchased from FRAWG, it can be flashed to be used on FRAWG at a FRAWG shop which, apparently, costs $. Buying a phone for use on their network is a bad "investment" because they are very limited and don't have enough cell radio bands to enable them to be used on most other networks and reduces their resale value. Here's a service on eBay which claims to be able to flash a CDMA iPhone 4 for use on FRAWG and costs $175 which is a ripoff http://www.ebay.com/itm/Flash-your-iPhone-4-CDMA-Frawg-nTelos-Wireless-Mail-Service-/110922517795. Do the math, you'll discover that when the phone cost and limitations are taken into account with the unlimited plan cost it isn't worth it.

Here's information about flashing software to convert a phone from one wireless carrier to another:

getting better up speed?

so I have this phone on ATT, and I switched from the atrix to this. I put the sim card from my atrix into this and i cant get anything above 100 kbps up, seems wayyy to slow...wondering if it has something to do with the throttling ATT did for the Atrix? I changed my phone on my online profile, but I don't know what else to do to get decent speeds...any ideas?
I dont believe the T-mobile nexus s supports At&t's 3g network. You're probably on edge

It's not the T-mobile version.... its the 9020A which works on ATT 3g.....
I hear that you will need to flash a new radio for the ATT version. I believe KD3 will help with your speed. Where did you get the NS?

[Q] NO HSPA+/Only EDGE on Simple Mobile

So I bought a Samsung Infuse off Craigslist. I love it, it's awesome. I use the Simple Mobile $60/m plan. I previously had a Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant before the Infuse. I used to run CM7 but used Bionix 1.31 as my ROM on my Vibrant. So I'm familiar with the ends and outs of this technology.
The Situation: Samsung Infuse running latest "unofficial build" CM7, flawless performance. After doing much research as to APN settings on Google and XDA I found that the internet is wrong with the APN settings for HSPA+ on a HSPA+ capable phones. I called Simple Mobile yesterday and we did an OTA (she spoke I listened) configuration of the APN and it's full of IP addresses nao. She said that will allow me to access the "4G" network. The thing is, it says "E" for EDGE at the top for my signal....consistently.
The Problem: The EDGE never changes, also according to various speedtest's I can't EVER break .50kbs DL speed off of WiFi.
So I tried switching out various modems that we're available to me for the Infuse via the CWM flashable's. I've seen NO IMPROVEMENT on data speeds after each modem.
So what exactly is the issue: Am I doing something wrong via XDA material? Or am I just ****ed on HSPA+/4G speeds?

You are right and WRONG all at the same time...fascinating isn't it!
Simple Mobile does in FACT use T-Mobile Towers, however; before I rocked the Infuse I've seen other speeds that read 3G/H. The Simple Mobile Network offers 4G/HSPA+ with the $60/m plan that I am currently on.
So with that information, how would you explain that a phone that is HSPA+ capable and programmed correctly that sits on the EDGE network and still doesn't break .50kbs DL speed??
I spoke with customer service at Simple Mobile and several other Simple Mobile retailers that told me up one wall and down the other that the Samsung Infuse programmed correctly should FLY without WiFi, this phone should act like the rocket it claims to be with data on the network.
Instead it is slow, sux and is worthless without WiFi.
So how come you tell me one thing, and several people that work for the Network and people that are affiliated with it tell me another?

I own a business; I know about selling. But according to my research, your a little or alot off; I just can't exactly prove it.
I know that AT&T offers 4Gish speeds (true LTE in like 2 cities in TX), and that T-Mobile offers 3.5+G-4Gish speeds.
I also understand the concept of up-selling, however that scenario does not apply with my current plan and situation.
Has it, or has it NOT been documented ANYWHERE that an HSPA+ capable phone on the $60/m Simple Mobile plan achieved true or realistic data DL speeds off WiFi?
I am no tech or anywhere educated in this topic. But why are you comparing network speeds with your wifi? Or am I missing something here?

I'm not using WiFi as a comparison, just as another option for higher DL speeds. Off WiFi I've seen snails crawl faster than my data can move.
I just want to know why I can't get anything better than **** with this great phone and supposedly "reasonably-good" network.

They simply dont know wat they r talking about, they r trained within their own company and dont know that other bands exist and not all 4G r on the same band, same for 3G. So i suggest u sell ur phone and get a tmobile phone or switch to ATT. Next time when u buy a phone, insert ur Sim card in and test the network before u pay

The phone was NETWORK LOCKED when I bought it, so I guess I suppose I'm glad you we'rent with my when I bought it lol.
I'll take into mild consideration that a multitude of people may not be aware of alternate existing networks.
The T-Mobile phone I had before licked ****ing sac, my buddy has a Captivate that OVER-SHINED my Vibrant any day of the week - So No, I won't buy a phone from a company that's supposedly being bought out BY AT&T.
From previous quotes: It seems that we are implying that ONLY a T-MOBILE BRAND PHONE can access the 4Gish HSPA+ speeds that Simple Mobile network (that uses T-Mobile towers) and not an AT&T branded phone.
Yes, it's true....the above DOES in fact sound stupid when I put it on paper. AT&T and T-Mobile use the same towers and Simple Mobile/Metro PCS (some other un-explained networks) use the SAME towers.
So how is it, according to posters: That replacing AT&T phone with T-Mobile garbage will allow me to acquire the DL speeds that reference HSPA+/4G speeds. AND NOT, under any circumstances is it possible for an AT&T phone that uses the same towers to get the same outcome?
OK, the last part really does sound stupid, I feel like I'm arguing with a mockingbird. Anyone else have any further to offer?

Actually I re-read this statement. AT&T don't use the same bands, something about T-Mobile uses 850 and AT&T uses 1700.
Would changing the band selection make a difference? How to if possible?
I think u can only change the APN, not the band, the band is hardware, not software. I had the same problem trying to use my Desire HD on tmobile and couldnt get anything more than edge. I did also ask questions here and all i got is the answer i told u. So sell ur phone asap, dont wait until its price drops more

Will straight talk sim work on not "straight talk phones"?
Which cheapest phone of straight talk I have to buy to get their SIM-card?
I know they selling GSM and CDMA phones and don't want to buy wrong one.
Flat Out answer only the 2G or EDGE bands in the phone are compatible with ATT networks the other bands are different so if you want bettter speeds get att or use wi-fi because edge is all you will ever get no matter what you do to the APN
like on the previous post mentioned, i think most of the att phones doesn't have the radio that is capable of receiving the 3g/4g frequencies tmobile use. i could be wrong, but i think is a hardware problem rather than a setting you can change.
Simple mobile is Tmobile, 3g may never work.
Strait talk is a variety of carriers, depends on,the specific phone. The only known phones that work from the att network and have a Sim that works in other phones are the expensive Nokia smart phones. But those also have a Tmobile variant, I don't know how to tell the difference without looking at the Sim.
There is also consumer cellular, apparently that,is att but I don't know if it's full talk text and Web or how it's billed.

Consumer Cellular is VERY "no-frills" - it's only for VERY light users.
There is no AT&T phone that I know of that supports the 1700 MHz band required for T-Mobile 3G.
The only phone I know of that has pentaband HSPA+ (works on both AT&T and T-Mobile) is the Galaxy Nexus.
When I programmed my HTC Evo 3D i saw various optinos for cdma/eg/4g in CDMA Workshop & QPST Service Programming, what I saw was diferent types of bands and freqz, you might wana check out a phone's specs of tmobile and then check if those specs (frqz & bands) match with the one set on your device...
For example
The Vocoder settings
band prefferences :
band class 0/1/2/3/4/5/ sys a/b/
GSM DSC 1800
GSM extended 900
Etc etc.... check with the device's password on it's profiles and realms (settings I can view on my evo using ##data# )
I can confirm that the issue is with the phones. I just ran a test using my simple mobile card on an AT&T Infuse vs Tmobile Vibrant 4G.
AT&T Infuse
Edge connection with 50kps max
Tmobile Vibrant 4G
3G connection with 240kps max
I will be going to staright talk at the end on this billing cycle.

Galaxy S II Skyrocket on Tmobile 3g?

Hi, I have been reading some posts in the Radio thread reporting that they are using the T-mobile Modem. It was unclear whether they had it working on the T-mobile network or just using the modem on the ATT network.
Is there anyone here using the Galaxy S II Skyrocket on T-mobiles 1700Mhz AWS 3G band and getting internet and sms and everything no problem?
I just want to make sure before I go out and purchase one for a lot of money and not have it working.
Yup I believe that the Skyrocket and the TMO SII are the same phone or at least have the same radio
Yes, you can use the t-mobile modem on the skyrocket and connect to t-mobile 3g. There are people on xda that have done this and confirmed working. The modem chipsets are different though.
There is one thing though. The skyrocket modem (mdm9200) supports 700/1700/2100 on LTE which is the same frequency that t-mobile uses on 3G. My concern is that although it will work since it is the same frequency, the skyrocket modem uses the 700/1700 band for LTE and not 3G, but 2100 for 3G and LTE. The t-mobile sgs2 uses the mdm8220 which supports 1700/2100 for 3G. I don't know enough about the particular power/design differences to say if this is a safe thing to do for extended periods of time. I heard of a few people having problems with their modems after flashing tmob modem on their skyrocket. Don't know if it's connected to the hardware differences.. just a caution. Make sure you have warranty or insurance coverage before you try
I'm going to buy the phone secondhand and thus I will not have warranty or any return policy hence I am worried. I wanted to make sure that it works before I go out and purchase the phone.
Were the people having problems the people who were still on the ATT network? I plan on using the phone strictly on the T-mobile network which I hear is also going to be putting out 1900Mhz 3G in certain markets due to the failed ATT merger and I happen to be in one of those large markets.
I have seen this question more than once but never an answer to why...with the two phones being nearly identical, what is the draw causing some tmo users to want the 727 over the 989?

Around here it is cheaper and also I hope that the phone will work with non-smartphone data plans on T-mobile because T-mobile locks out their own smartphones to certain data plans.
As I've said, others have reported it to be working. However, I don't think there are enough people doing this to give a clear idea if the tmob modem is having any adverse effects on the skyrocket modem. Maybe open a poll thread to get a better idea?

[Q] Can I Use The AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket On T-Mobile?

I have a T-Mobile Pay As You Go plan so I am wondering if I bought a Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket and get it unlocked through eBay if I would be able to use it with my T-Mobile SIM card? I don't need the 4G LTE on it as I would just use my wireless Internet if I ever needed to get on the Internet. I use this phone mostly for texting, phone calls, and games. Do not use it for the 4G, 3G, etc.
Thanks for any and ALL help!
Oh and if I unlock the phone to use on T-Mobile do I need to root to flash any kernels, etc? Looked for answer to my question but was unable to find an answer.
ATT for the win jaja
Yes you do need a root to flash new kernels
Edit: and yes you can use it with any GSM provider if you get it unlocked hopes this answers your question

I was looking at running the ATT Samsung Captivate on T-Mobile for a friend.
I found out the Captivate would only run at "Edge" speeds on T-Mobile. Not 3G or 4G.
Might want to check to see if it would be the same for the Skyrocket.

You are correct, ATT and tmobile have different bands in which their phones operate, so you will only get EDGE speeds at most. Also to clarify ATT's 3G data operates over 850/1900Mhz spectrum and tmobile 3G operates over 900/2100Mhz so you really can't use 3g/4g at all unless you go with another carrier like Straight Talk where they use tmobiles and ATT's towers so you recieve 3g on your smartphone. Good luck !

WOW! Thank you all for such much information, I LOVE this forum. As for the 3G honestly some may think I am crazy but I honestly don't care about the 3G/4G stuff. I use my phone for talking and texting, I never use the data plan. In fact I just don't have a data plan so it honestly don't matter to me. I just wanted to make sure my phone would be useable without having to root it, change the kernels, etc. to make calls and text family & friends.
So thank you ALL for all your information and taking the time to share it. It is very much appreciated!
The Skyrocket says it supports LTE 700/1700/2100 so does the Galaxy Note and they just found a way to use the Galaxy Note on TMobile 4g so wouldn't this phone support it as well? They have the same specs.

The Skyrocket says it supports LTE 700/1700/2100 so does the Galaxy Note and they just found a way to use the Galaxy Note on TMobile 4g so wouldn't this phone support it as well? They have the same specs.

Us skyrockerters had figured this out easy before the note came out. I've been using mine on TMobile 4G since January.
Alias..if all you want is talk and text then you don't have to do anything except unlock the phone and put your Sim card in.

No problem alias glad to help, you will have to edit some APN settings if you want to send mms though! Not hard at all just search the forums or the web if you have any trouble.

Nexus S 4g no contract carrier options?

So, I excitedly purchased a Nexus S 4g off eBay the other day thinking, hey it's a CDMA phone it might work on the Verizon network. Now I'm not so sure. I'd even be willing to use the Sprint network but those guys just told me Sprint has no sims and the only option is to open a 2 year contract agreement to use that phone. Sounds a little crazy to me. I'm not willing or able to do that at this time.
I need a no-contract phone carrier for the Nexus S 4g. Are there any no-contract carriers in the USA that will provide service?
My wife uses her Nexus S 4G on Metro PCS.. there is probably a guide to alternative carriers on here if you look around. She only gets 3g on it but for phone and text its perfect.

Hi thanks for your reply. If I remember correctly the phone you mention would be a GSM variety. I have a CDMA version. My phone's spec name is Nexus S 4G SPH D720.
Found some good info here....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_wireless_communications_service_providers
So just to get 3g I'd need to match up a carrier that supports CDMA2000 1xEV-DO, then a compatible sim, then assuming they allow a sim swap if I have to buy one of their phones unless they have a sim program like Smart Talk.
UNLESS... and this is the real reason I posted this on XDA, I can get some information on how to flash my phone to one of these carriers. I'm now looking hard at Cricket Wireless. They're pretty good in my neighborhood. I know I can pay somebody to do the flash but where would the fun be in that even if I could afford it lol.
So any info on how to flash the phone, correct the settings or whatever else I need to do to get this phone Cricket ready is appreciated!
I'm looking into net10 now. They have a SIM program and support 3g.
My wifes phone is the same.(I think) It was a sprint phone originally. Anyhow, I was in my local metro dealer the other day and he showed me some sim cards as they are about to start using them in September for the bring your own phone program. So if you have a sim slot, that is a possible option for ya! Good luck and keep us posted what you decide,so others know their options as well.

There's no SIM card in this phone. It arrived today. They used an embedded SIM from what I understand. Although I've used Metro PCS in the past it isn't even available in my area if my phone had a SIM. I do appreciate your responses as it appears this device is not getting much love anymore. Funny thing, the phone state is still in service although Sprint has closed usage. So I get a signal and all and have discovered the Sprint network is weak in my area. Specifically my home is a dead zone practically. Back to the drawing board. Be nice if I could switch out the radio I guess. Not sure I wanna undertake all that. Seems a shame as this is still a nice device running Jellybean as well.
You can use sprint or any derivative, ie boost or possibly virgin. No sim, but the phone can be flashed to work on boost. Pretty sure of that. It will never work on anything but sprint guaranteed.

My opinion is buy gsm unlocked ns and your options are endless and I believe gsm has more development as well. Sell the ns4g to pay some of the difference. Gsm are almost always slightly more expensive than gsm but this Phone is 3 years old so it really shouldn't be a problem finding one for less than $100

Thanks for the link. I'm gonna look into flashing this phone to Verizon today.

Yeah good idea. i had very limited funds the other day while looking for a device and came across the sprint phone cheap. i figured the gsm phones would be just out of my pocket money's reach.
I might end up selling it off and getting a gsm version in the future. in the meantime i went and bought aSamsung illusion running on Verizon network. this phone is very similar to the Nexus phone. Smaller than the "s". Now that Im contracted with Verizon (prepaid) I'll see if i can move the sprint phone over via flashing it. Stay tuned!

Ting runs off Sprint towers. You can use any previous Sprint contract phone that Ting has on their eligibility list. Just go to their web site and enter your phone's ESN/MEID to check for eligibility.

Good to know thank you. I ended up signing with Sprint and getting an EVO 4g LTE. I did have the nexus running on Sprint for a few days whil I made my decision.
