Until ICS comes out, and we get a better app switcher( which I believe it has ), I'm looking for something out there that has a better UI / more functionality than the current gingerbread "hold home button" task switcher.
I'm a big fan of the palm pre "cards" switcher, where you can see all your app previews, then just flick one away to close. I think I found one on the store, but it seemed buggy and not supported by the dev at all anymore( which is a shame ) because it looked to be almost exactly what I was looking for.
Big thanks to anyone that can find something like this
Bump.
I am also very interested in this.
Suprised there hasn't been a response ... seems with Android being so customizable we would have some choice in app switchers( other than the crap I've seen on the Market )
Multi task works gud enof for me! Or u can also try smart taskbar! It has the features u've been looking for. :>

Hmmm... Looks interesting but not exactly what I was looking for. I guess I'm picky, or just really like the UI of it, but I like the "Cards" app switching where you can throw one off the screen to kill it.
From what I can tell, doesn't look like there is anything like that out there so far, I bet others would like this also ... then again, I could be the only one ... who knows

Just what you wanted. Worked wonders before I got ics. I loved it. Its basically the same thing and you can set it to pop up on long press of different keys. And you can swipe away apps to kill them.

So this looks pretty cool ... graphics are poor( as noted in the Market description, and says Rooted phones improved graphics on the way ) ... But its def. the closest thing to what I was looking for so far.
Good reccomendation, gonna try it for a day or two and see if I like it ... not to sure at this point, but its worth a try ... thanks!
Unfortunately no previews are shown on my rooted stock LB1. Only app icons and empty preview.
I'm presently using TaskSwitcher which, albeit with no previews, does a good work and sports also selectable widgets.

I haven't tried out this app yet, but it doesn't look too different from the stock switcher for Android( The middle box popup with app icons on long home press ) What do you like that's different, other than the widget which I don't really need I wouldn't think?
Another thing with these apps, and I know its a "limitation" of the Android OS ... Is I do like the "Long hold home to bring up switcher" function, too bad these can't override this ... seems like with a rooted phone they would be able to override this setting. Then again, I'm a software engineer, but not an Android software engineer, so what do I know
If you have a tablet you might try my new app - "Tablet popup manager"

You get more than 6 slots for open apps, differentiation between open and closed recent apps, single short home button click for invoking switcher. I also like having some widgets conveniently available above. See pic.

Okay, the stock task switcher is effective, but in no way flashy. And of course the market has nothing good. I was wondering if anyone knew of any apps or mods that replace the stock switcher with a more stylish one. Preferably somewhat similar to the iphone 4 (what can I say, it's worse than the n1, but they make it look so nice ) or even cards like on the palm pre.
The only thing I found that was even close was Movial Task Switcher, but I can't find any release for it. Here's what it looks like:

I am sorry I have no contribution ATM... but that app is sweet!
Isn't it. And since the N1 has twice the processing power, it would be completely fluid.

For iphone-esque task switching, download"Task tray " from the market.
Obviously Froyo has removed the ability to kill tasks, but switching works well nonetheless.

The only way to kill an app in Froyo is Settings > Applications > Manage Applications, select the app, and choose "Force stop." No app can kill another app in froyo (so, Taskiller, etc. don't work). This was because task killers are pointless and detrimental to your Android system. They, and the bugs they cause, have become so common that Google had to fix the problem by disabling them all. However, I do think that those of us with su should re-implement this, in hopes that hackers/modders are smart enough to know not to use Taskiller. I just want a cool switcher app, with an ability to kill a renegade apps quickly and easily, with less than a dozen screen taps. Something like AppSwipe.
Wow, liking Visual Task Switcher. Could do with some polish but it does thumbnails like it says..

Yep, just downloaded it as a result of your recommendation. It almost emulates the video in the OP. It only seems to show "open apps" (i.e. foreground tasks) not "recent apps" though... so if you exit an app it does not display... in some ways this is actually quite nice.
Even better with CM6 because you do NOT need to bind it to short press of Home key... in CM settings you can bind it to long press of Home key and completely replace the built in functionality!
Previews need a little polish and I'll reserve judgement for a few days but this may be quite good!
This is the only thing that I've been missing since moving from a Sense ROM/launcher.
Does a nice scrollable widget exist that's similar to the stock Friendstream one?
EDIT: I've tried out Socialite, but it seems to never sync properly and eventually force closes on the CyanogenMod nightly builds.

EDIT: I was just too tired to realize what I was doing incorrectly. Trying to get a widget setup that looks decent.
All of the different variants of the Sense style widgets look really "off" for some reason. Looking further, it's definitely the pictures, as they trail a bit off the left side of the widget. (See pic)
I'm also not fond of the left/right arrows on the widget. I only set up FB, so I don't need non-working buttons.

Use the scrollable version with ADW/LauncherPro. It is better than FriendStream.
Like so:
Nice setup TheBiles.
PureMessenger > friendstream with the ability to use skins, add email and sms along with twitter and FB to stream, ability to select preferred clients for clicked feed, and oodles of config settings in a nice scrollable UI with ADW or launcherPRO. Well worth a buck-fifty.
I wouldn't consider Pure messenger better than Friendstream myself.
It's nice... but sadly needs a few fixes in my opinion
1) Won't display 'mobile upload' picture notifications properly. It only shows 1 picture in the internal viewer with no way to go directly to the person's photo list.
2) Pictures display as filenames in the list view, rather than the actual thumbnail as sense does. (This might be considered user preference, but I'd prefer to see a picture rather than <randomwords>.jpg )
3) No support for built in HTC applications for Facebook nor Twitter (aka peep). While the internal viewer can be dismissed in favor of a real 'app', the selection is limited to bout 3-6 apps none of which are the built in parts of HTC's rom. (Of course if you're not using HTC roms then this isn't problem
Overall it's a great app, and the best out there I've seen, don't get me wrong.. but Friendstream still has the edge in actual functionality for basic use. Sure, No themes, lack of customization hurt, but when it comes down to using the product for what it's intended for (Keeping up with posts/photos from your friends) it has a few issues IMO.

Overall it seems "ok" but lacking in some ways as well. You can't post directly from the widget, which is a huge strike against it. I want the widget so I don't have to clutter my homescreens with redundant apps.

I'm using the scrollable widget currently, and like I said, it's neat to watch updates, but it's a killer that I don't see an obvious way to post anything to FB/Twitter through the widget, instead I'm forced to use the app.
It just feels "clunky" for lack of a better term.
I will say that the widgets can be set up to look better, it just seems that some of the skins are definitely not ones any OCD person would want to use.

That's Extended Controls. The second icon is the Froyo hotspot toggle, but it does have a 4G toggle option. I just don't have it on there because 4G doesn't work with CyanogenMod at the moment.

Well crap, it looks as though I'd always been fat-fingering the arrow and only saw the "open Facebook" link in there.
I recant my previous statements and accept that this is a damn fine alternative to Friendstream. (after a little getting used to)
The only issue that I have with Pure Messenger is this: When a FB contact posts something on someones' wall it doesn't show who the other person is, even if the other person is one of your contacts it doesn't show.

Regardless of the feeling that this is an astroturfed post, I'll try it since there are three things about WebOS that I wanted to make love to after leaving my Palm device. This covers one such concern.
After approximately fourteen seconds with this app, I can say that if it holds up on resource usage, it will never, ever leave my phone.
Single click brings up my "open" apps.
Double click takes me back to home.
Triple click replicates a unicorn out of my camera lens that burps rainbows and farts lasers.
Its as close to app cards as we will get on Android. Kudos to whoever is behind this.
Checked it out, all is good... only if we can map this to home button LONG press action, to replace the current task switcher.
Good look with finding this app and telling us!!! I think its pretty sweet and works well, the only gripe I have with it, is that on my EVO is kills leap when I hit the home button
Desperately needs the option to set launch button.

You can't use it with a custom launcher, try deleting any other launcher then it might forward correctly. Or if your on a sense rom just ban/remove sense

"Launch from Notification" does not slow down home screen but it only allows 5 application to launch.
https://market.android.com/details?...launchfromstatusbarfree&feature=search_result
Fantastic App! This is exactly what I've been searching for since I saw the Touchwiz UI.
I also, tried out "Launch from Notifications" and while it gets the job done, it doesn't look as snazzy or have as many slots. (5 vs 8) I'll try both and see which one I like better and how much battery they suck down.
For me the Netflix and Polaris Office apps are larger than the rest of the icons, not sure why. Also, I'd love a GUI was to switch the apps around once added to the list. I understand this is a very early version as it references a paid version that doesn't exist as of this post, so I'm looking forward to seeing what the dev has to offer and would be willing to pay $1.00 for the improvements requested in this thread.
As other said, "A nice start" but...
what would be nice is to be able to run small app that can be on top of other apps. (a notepad, a calculator, etc,)
Very nice app, but slowing down homescreen is a huge letdown... Launch from notification works fine, think I'll stick to it for now.
Yeah, same here. Noticed a big drop in home screen smoothness. I like the concept though. Hopefully the dev can make some performance enhancements.
I've been playing around with Mark Wei's splendid http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688531StandOut library and thought I'd share one app I've been finding useful.
It's very basic and very beta.
FloatNote v1.0.4b
Edit:
Thought I better provide some info
This app is very simple. It floats on top of other windows and lets you scribble notes or little sketches.
I wrote it for me and my phone so I know it runs okay on a Galaxy Note under cm9.
It's written for the galaxy note stylus so pressure increases pen stroke width and the side button gives you the eraser.
Select ink colour by swiping your stylus along the rainbow thing on the titlebar (the title text shows the selected colour). Click the sidebutton when touching the rainbow to return to black.
It autosaves your note and autoloads it when the app opens again.
Resize the window with the triangle in the bottom right corner.
I'm using the android native API so it may work okay(ish) on other devices. If it does, let me know.
Enjoy...
Nikad
Latest Update:
Version 1.0.9b
Changelog:
Major rewrite - had to do away with Mark's standout library and reimplement some of its functionality.
Hide and restore from the notification bar
Share note with other apps, email, etc
Saves position, size and pen colour.
Lots of bug fixes and improvements in performance/reliability
Important:
This app requires API Level 14 or higher to detect the stylus so you need ICS.
There are known issues running under Touchwiz so stick with a CM9/CM10 variant.
Know to run okay on the Galaxy Note International, I717 and the HTC Flyer.
If anyone runs it on other devices I'd love to know!

If you've ran the app already, you can launch it from your recent apps. But...
Improvements in mind include being able to hide the window and then show it when you click on the notification (I had this on an earlier alpha and just need to add it back in).
Multi-page note: support for more than one page.
Share note (with whatever).
I'm not going to go too heavy on functionality though. The idea was to be simple and uncluttered.

I have been refreshin this page for new version since your last post. The new version is smaller and works great. I like the export option and clear. I need a find a way to launch this app while I am on a call so i can take notes quickly..

Click to collapse
I'm glad you like it. Thanks.
If you're on a call, just pull down the status bar and click on the notification. It's a bit of an illusion that it's "hidden". Really the app is shut down and relaunched when you click the restore notification.
By the way, I see you running a stock rom. Does TouchWiz not cause problems with FloatNote?
Thanks again for your interest!
Ok. That makes sense. I can restore it from the notification bar if it is hidden.. only thing the app must be up and running before that..
I do not use Touichwiz when there are great lauchers namely Nova these days.. It has been some time since I went back to TW
I use float to be called in one of the gesture of NOVA which is great. You would do a scrolling option on the screen if possible. That will help me add longer notes rather than extending the window,,
Thanks. :good:
Working great on RocketRom v10!
Having an issue parsing the package.
Will try again via desktop soon.
Good work!
I love such stuff
EDIT:
Sorry!
I was half asleep and didn't see that it is for CM9.
Please forgive me!:silly:
