Vivid/Skyrocket/Nitro/Note or WAIT? - General Questions and Answers

i have an upgrade available with ATT, and old phone is gone so am using an old iphone 3GS with a cracked screen, so the need is fairly urgent.
THe Vivid, Skyrocket, and Nitro all seem like equally fine phones to me, with a slight lean to skyrocket just based on user opinion on here. ALl three of those could be gotten pretty cheap, like < $100 or so. So that's a plus.
The note looks great, but i just don't think i can deal with the size. I don't like to wear a clip, and take my phone out of my pocket any time i sit down as it is. I just think in jeans this thing is gonna be annoying.
Would you guys get in now with one of the three phones currently available (and for a good price), or wait it out for the Nexus or something else to hit market on ATT? i do hate playing the waiting game for a phone, but if it winds up being worth it i would be glad i waited.

What's everyone's best guess on when to expect Nexus?

Wait at least until summer time to take advantage of the latest smartphones being released then.

Just a tribute to the Captivate...

I can't believe I'm not in a hurry to jump ship to the Galaxy S2. The Cappy has been such a good experience as a phone and it's still able to do whatever I need it to do. When the Fuze came out I couldn't help but be there the first day to pick one up. I was compelled to have the latest and greatest, and the abilities a new smartphone would allow. The same happened the release day of the Captivate.
Sure, it's had its issues (GPS and capped data speeds come to mind) but between the performance of hardware and the constant ROM updates from the dev community, I just don't feel that compulsion to move on from the Captivate. For me it's been a great phone and it's made me a big fan of Samsung's products. Oh I'll get a Galaxy S2 here in a month or two when the price comes down a bit. But I'm still happy with my Captivate and I'll keep it around as a backup.
ditto
i will likely wait until december unless the deal is too good to pass up.
Want to see what develops with the nexus prime.
Some info claims it will be a Verizon Exclusive but i am skeptical. I think that it is more likely we will see it launch exclusively on verizon with a 30-60 window before other carriers get it....so i am not giving up on the prime....the solid metal body construction alone will be worth the wait...just hope ATT gets it.

That is what has my attention as well...Galaxy Note.
I don't feel the need to upgrade from my Captivate either. Its a weird feeling, I use to be such a phone whore, now I look at new phones and feel they can't do a whole lot for me (personally, I know the phones are actually huge upgrades) that my Captivate can't do.
I HATE how ALL of the new phones being announced are so huge! 4.3" isn't TOO bad, but I do prefer my 4" screen. They're just getting bigger too, I want the Nexus Prime so badly, but there's no way I'm getting it with a 4.65" screen. My upgrade isn't until May 2012 and I'm questioning if there will even be a phone out there I like by then.

I'm with you guys. Once the GS II finally came out, I am not as excited. The last ROM I put on is great and until that note comes out, paying 200 for the GS2 isn't so alluring.
Especially with LTE on horizon and the Note, which will be awesome.
It's like an old friend, even knowing something is better out there, I'm not ready to trade in my old worn in shoes

The article says 4.6". It may not be so bad since that probably includes the buttons at the bottom, I'll just have to see it in person, but I still think it will be a very large device.
I'm a captivate owner and I really love it. I will not change it in a while..
The only two things that I don't really like in Captivate are very bad sensitive buttons (well, I replaced screen after it was broken, and than buttons were like that) and very bad battery life, especially with MIUI
But speed and functionality are just grear. And still love the screen with maximum brightness. I think I will buy Galaxy Note or Nexus Prime, will see...
I'm with you guys, but not by choice. I have a contract to fulfil.

I'll also be waiting for the Note.
I just looked up the Galaxy Note. Wow...! That thing looks amazing. It might be just a bit too big but I'm really considering jumping on that.
I'm with you guys. There is no real reason to upgrade just yet. With a good custom ROM (Cog5), it does everything I ask of it, and does it quickly. The screen is just amazing, and only the SAMOLED Plus beats it, if you ask me. Since I'm not on contract, I can switch when I want, but I see nothing out there I just gotta have. The Prime may change that, but if it is CDMA, then I'm out. Big Red is too expensive for my blood.

Think I should go for the Galaxy S II or wait?

I'd get it off contract because I'm crazy and illogical. But the Galaxy S II looks great, even if ATT shrunk the screen. I know the Nexus Prime is coming out soon, but I am iffy on it. All of the previous Nexus's seemed to fizzle out quickly or something, though I know none were ever made by the current Samsung beast company.
I guess I should wait for that announcement. A curved screen isn't weird, is it?
Att didn't shrink the screen. Their version, the I777, is the closest to the original S2. The other carriers mess with their versions more.
I plan on waiting for the Nexus Prime. I'm pretty sure it's going to set the new standard for smart phones in 2012.
Ya I'm kinda in the same boat. But the important thing is whether the nexus it galaxy will have the most active community because for me that is really what made my phone. Also I saw somewhere that Samsung is coming out with 1.5ghz chips for their phones in the spring and you may wanna wait for that

I'll bleed for S ll
I want phone off contract but don't want to derail budget. Realized if I donate blood that's sixty to seventy dollars a week..
i'm waiting to see about the prime. some rumours are it will be CDMA/Verizon. besides, it's only tuesday
I would wait for not necessarily the prime but a phone with:
- 720p screen
- Quad Core cpu (Kal-El hopefully because I am sick of looking at games like shadowgun and I cannot play. I know there is chainfire3d but it does not work for all games)
Nexus Prime sounds perty nice, but looks like it may be a Verizon exclusive for now.
I was REALLY looking forward to the S II on AT&T, but it's taken so long to get here that at this point I'm thinking of holding off for the Galaxy Note (possibly early 2012). It may to big for some but I like the S pen thing and will be using it for business.
PLayes with the S II yesterday for a few minutes. It was nice and my captivate is getting long in the tooth... Tempting, but I will likely wait (for the Note).
As for waiting for the Nexus Prime, you may have a bit of a wait if indeed it starts out as a Verizon exclusive.
The joy and bane of android phones is that they self-obsolete themselves every 6 months. There will ALWAYS be a better phone that is just past the corner. The android phone scene is advancing faster than any other hardware wise.
I went with the Thrill: dual core, dual channel RAM, 3D screen, HDMI output (cable included), excellent build quality, same "4"G, plus its $20 from Walmart online on contract. In many ways its even or outspecs the galaxy s 2, but much softer on the wallet. I just couldn't rationalize paying an extra $100+ just to get more choice in custom ROMs.

I get bored with phones very easily but once i got my Inspire i wanted to keep it for more than a month or 2 (which was the shelf life for a phone to me for a long time) So i rooted it to keep me busy/interested, and when i get bored i dive deeper into the root to make it better. But im at a point now where i dont know enough to go much further, and the onlyfriends i have that are into phones like i am are through here. So its hard to actually be taught anything. So i really want a new phone but not sure which direction i should go, or if i should hold out till the new batch of phones is out. In short, why cant i be satisfied with a phone nfor more than a few months?
Nope i wanna stick around until a while. The inspire is a great device

I've found the Inspire to be one of the best phones I've ever owned. I think I'd only put the G1 above it in terms of phones I loved owning. The Inspire has given me 0 problems, has tons of dev support and is still very fast/snappy to use.

Also, I do find myself getting bored with it easily. Definitely an amazing device, but damn that Galaxy Nexus is tempting. If only it had the 8MP camera!
I actually really like my Inspire still, It's still a very capable device. I am going to be due for an upgrade in the next few months and i am going to be holding on to this phone i think for a while. Till something really catches my eye, because i really want to get another HTC device. The galaxy nexus looks sweet but im not a fan of Samsung's use of so much plastic on their phones.
My inspire makes me pancakes for breakfast every morning. I'll probably keep it until I'm tired of pancakes or my pants don't fit anymore.

That's what's so great about Android and being rooted. Get bored, flash a new ROM. Voila, new phone
No way! I love my Inspire still, it's a great phone, everything is really smooth with it right now. I'll probably hang on to it for another 18 months till i have another upgrade.
I really like my Inspire. I can not find a reason to upgrade. Nothing else out does anything different. I need a new Experiance before I will upgrade again. (or my contract is up). I had a Windows phone and modded the hell out of it and then, I went Iphone and modded it to death, and then andriod. Modded to death. See my pattern, each was a new experience. I will need a reason to leave my phone before I will.
meh...
After having issues with the battery life, I'm ready to upgrade to something with a larger battery & better screen. I'm not really hating on the phone, just disappointed with it.
Next phone I buy will be at cost, since I picked it up for $100 with a new contract.
I'm not tired of it (took 2 months only) but maybe if a little disappointed, I was recently at a concert and record some songs but my disappointment came into play, pesimo sound seemed pfffff q was in a machine room, something my old iphone that never happened to me, but good either me every day I live concerts as he remains so until q together for my new iphone 4s.
I have to say I like it and can deal with the few minor probs like battery life until the edge is released or equal to it. Sense I buy all my phones at cost I am willing to wait and see the next Gen device and right now everything else is just too weak to justify upgrading yet
So far I'm lovin' it. While this IS my first smartphone, I'd have to say I'm impressed overall with the phone. One thing bugs me though. I don't take a lot of pictures, but when I do, I like to not have to set my whitebalance to fluorescent every time I want to take a low light picture with my flash... I kinda wish the coders had implemented where if the camera sees low light, and decides to use the flash, to just set the whitebalance to fluorescent. Ahh the little things.
Overall I like the build quality, for ME it's been a solid phone, and I love modding it. Endless entertainment!
i've had mine for a couple months and it's the best phone i've ever owned and im happy with it but honestly im bored. Too many sense rom's are the same and CM7 just dosen't interest me anymore and i've been using MIUI for the last couple weeks but i'm getting to the point where i can't really expand it that much more. I'm going to try to convince my dad (im only 14) to kick my brother off of our family plan and make him go to a gophone plan as he's 19 and dosen't use his phone much and then pay the ETF and switch to verizon, with christmas coming up i think he'll do it but i'll just have to wait
Tired of it? Heck no! This is my fifth Android device and I love it. To me nothing else out at the moment is compelling enough to switch. I love the actual build quality of the phone. Too many other phones just have too much plastic on them and they feel cheap. This phone is solid. Its plenty fast and well supported in the community. My contract is up in August of 2012 so if it doesn't get bricked before then, that is what I will be using. I look forward to see the offerings then.
I've had the inspire since launch day and it has lived up to the billing so far. There's really nothing you can't do with this phone. I live in Houston which has LTE but I'm working in Odessa right now so there's no need for me to jump into an LTE device just yet. They barely have hspa+ rolled out down here. I'll probably wait until next year for the new slate of devices, when att broadens their LTE footprints.
For now I'm enjoying my inspire

I love my inspire but like others am bored of the same old roms. Wanted the vivid but with the tegra 3 quad core already in the new transformer 2 tablet I think I might wait. And Samsung I believe has a phone called the flex that is supposed to come out q2 2012 with a flexible screen and body I think there are too many better phones in the near future to justify using my upgrade now and waiting two more years to get something better. Girl I work with just ordered the vivid so i will just look at it when she gets it and go from there

When are you guys upgrading to the note?

In the spirit of several Infuse owners coming to the Galaxy Note forums trying, but failing miserably, to convince people that the Note isn't really an upgrade, I'm asking you guys: when are you switching phones to the superior in all aspects and huge upgrade to the Infuse that the Note is?
Sent from my superior GT-N7000 using Tapatalk
That ugly Super AMOLED PenTile display still puts me in doubt. Maybe when Samsung releases a Note with a Super AMOLED Plus IPS display I'll be more interested. I'm baffled as to why they'd take such a big step back in technology for the screen on this phone. Sure it's 1280x800 and 285 PPI but even my old Captivate looks better when it comes to colors and lack of artifacts. I'm still waiting for an HD SAP screen, 1080p would be even better.
You are totally off base... mine is in hand, 1200x800 the colors are more bright and sharp than my infuse or cappy .... 1.4 gb processor, able to oc to 1.83 with the custom kernel we have. UCLA1 2.3.6 stock firmware with official ics coming in march, it will decimate the gnexus. Its 10 times the phone of a cappy or infuse... best Samsung smartphone they've released. And just wait til the collective gets done with it...

It's a great looking phone spec wise, but for me it's just too big. If it was a 4.5" device i'd be all over it but I don't want a phone any bigger than that due to personal preferences and how I carry it (see front pants pocket). I stopped by a store and tried it out, but there was no way it was comfortably going in there.
IMO anyway, after the screen passes the 5" mark, to me it's more of a small tablet than a phone.
You guys have fun with your note's . By the time I get a new phone, the galaxy s IV will be out lol. *waiting*
Sent from my SGH-I997 using Tapatalk
You're going to be waiting a long time my friend. It will be the end of the year before the US receives their GS3 variants, so probably yet another year after that until the GS4 is released over here. I suppose it will be like a year and a half until the international GS4 is released, but that's still decently optimistic.
I guess I am sort of lucky that while I'm on my parents plan I get a new phone every year because they just let me use their upgrades and take my old phones once I'm done. My mom is on my iPhone 3g and my dad is on my captivate. This summer, I will be using my dad's upgrade to get the note. Who knows, maybe the international GS3 will necessitate that I buy that instead, however I highly doubt it will win me over vs. the Note.
And mods, don't close this thread like all of the others. We want to talk to our fellow infusers about a specific phone. Just let there be one thread, when we're gone, it will die naturally.

It's a very simple practical issue: If I can't sit down comfortably with the phone in my pocket, it's annoying. If I can't comfortably hold the phone the way I want to, it's annoying. When I can't hold it up to my head without feeling like I'm wearing half a helmet, it's annoying.
I'm not buying a phone that annoys me.

Have you tried sitting down with one in your pocket? I really don't think it's as cumbersome as you would think. That is unless you wear girl jeans or nuthuggers? But with either of those the infuse is too big anyways.
And how would you hold it that you can't with your infuse? Yes it's bigger, but is there really a time when one handed use is absolutely necessary and can't wait for another free hand?
Lastly, why be so self conscious about holding it up to your head? I guarantee nobody will judge you negatively for it, and even if they do, what's the difference? They're strangers.
Not really trying to argue, I guess I just see a lot of people passing on such a great device and I don't get it.
Plus, when you are ready to upgrade, what's the harm in giving it a try for 30 days?

When and to what will you upgrade from the venerable Captivate?

So I've been sitting on an upgrade since before the sgs3 came out. Have been telling myself to wait until it's under $100...Now the HOX is $99 via at&t or even $79 via Costco with free activation and bunch of accessories...color me tempted. Sure the One X has some flaws, but most agree it's solid especially at $80. Then again, what will these new Android phones go for after iPhone 5 is released? Probably a good deal cheaper, and I like value on the cheap
That being said, I can't complain about my Cappy running CM9; it's running as good now as it ever has and the ICS port is close enough to flawless for me.
Understandably, the question I ask is opinion...but curious what folks are eyeing up for their next phone. Considering I got my Cappy refurbished for $0 plus contract, I have half a mind to wait for the sgs3 to be similarly offered before I bite.
Thoughts? What at&t phone are you holding out for?

i was so tempted to buy the sgs3 outright but im holding off
When i bought my captivate on Christmas of 2010, Wal-Mart/AT&T never took off the upgrade i used to purchase it.
So i waited until i was sufficiently bored with the captivate and something else caught my eye.
I bought the note about a month after it was released, do not regret it at all.
The hox is poop, a friend of mine abs fellow teammate sells phones, every one x he has sold in his store has been returned with an issue.
The s3 has been having problems with people losing their imei numbers after flashing a custom Rom, with no way to restore them, the old methods don't seem to work.

I have those three phones on my radar for the next upgrade. The One X was the lowest, and if you're getting information saying it's not worth the box it comes in, that's good to know.
I'm torn between the size of the Note and the additional horsepower of the S3. It looks like they've managed to get around the IMEI thing for the AT&T S3 (at least that's what my 5 minutes reading in that forum indicates), so I'm less worried about that.
I guess it will come down to the price difference at the time of upgrade.
So... there you go. Do with that what you must.
I got an Atrix 2 when it was $1 from Best Buy on black Friday. That's my main phone and daily driver, and my Cappy is my funsies phone. The Atrix 2 still has a locked boot loader (let's see if I ever buy another Motorola unless it's a Nexus) so I still use my Captivate a lot for tinkering.
My next phone? Probably an off-contract Nexus.

Something that is built for ICS and up. Something that is more bleeding-edge tech then the cappy was for it's time. So probably something not Samsung, since they are the leading brand and have nothing to prove.
-xda app, too lazy for something interesting to say-
Keeping mine.... why switch?!
Are you still using your computer from 95?
Technology has a shelf life, no matter how much you love it, it will be more than obsolete within a relatively short amount of time.
No matter how old my phone gets it will still be comparable to the newest devices in its principle purpose, to be used as a phone... Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe my dumb phone from 2005 has the comparable cellular abilities.
The reason I like this one more than my 2005, is the wifi teathering, mp3, camera, and GPS. Tablets and PC's I frequently update because I expect them to do a lot more than play music and call people. I suppose if you were in so impatient to as not wait 3 seconds for a website to load it would be worth the $500 price tag of a new phone. But I would rather be 2 years behind and use the extra $$ for something fun, like a new mountain bike or rifle.
When someone invents a modular phone system that can be upgraded like a PC, then I will buy it that day.

I'm going with either the SGSIII or Note 2. The Captivate has 512 MB ram but the SGSIII (and probably the Note 2) has 2GB! That's why android 4.1 is 'so buttery smooth!' I thought about the HTC One X but the battery is not removable, so forget it. Time to move up to buttery smooth!
Is butter related only to the ram or software also?

It's a combination of available ram, software efficiency, and processor speed. You can have the fastest processor and 1 or of 2 GB of available ram, but if the software is dis-organized, or it has illogical code, or it conflicts with the operating system, you won't have smooth operation. The Captivate on ICS is very close to its limits and JB may be the limit, depending on how the devs make their custom roms. I'm staying with CM9 RC2 until, and if, the stable version is released. Then I'll turn my Captivate into a MP3 player and wifi only browser and enjoy my stock SGSIII or Note 2.
Even on the S3 I'm not sure I'll stick with stock...maybe at least root to freeze stupid at$t bloat.
Thanks for the good input on this thread. I'm severely tempted by the $80 HOX at Costco, but keep reminding myself that S3 should get cheaper by time iPhone 5 is released in the wild. The waiting is the hardest part.

its far to expensive now though. i have a feeling quad core phones are on their way to market.
I upgraded my phone about a week ago. I went from my beloved Captivate to the Galaxy S 3, and I couldnt be happier. Dont get me wrong, I loved my cappy. I flashed just about every rom that was/is available for it. But my new SGS3 is a marvel of a phone. The speed of this phone is insane. For example, when installing new apps on GS3, it only takes literally a second to install an app with a size of say 20MB. My Captivate was fast, but not that fast, but I guess thats to be expected. If you love the Galaxy S series like I do... Then its a no-brainer what to upgrade to.

I love my captivate. I've sent it to hell and back flashing constantly, soft bricking repeatedly, and dropping it occasionally, but it has remained solid, with only minor injuries. Not to mention I have a smooth, stable (for me at least) Jelly Bean ROM, and an amazing development community!
All that said, I'll run to the next Nexus device faster than a cheetah on hot asphalt.
I'm also thinking Nexus, those things get more development attention than any other device.

I was really close to getting an S3, but now that I have a REALLY fast and stable rom on my phone (helly bean), I don't feel the need to upgrade so quickly.
I'll probably wait a couple months and see what's new!
