Hey guys, just wondering what you think the best kernel is for long battery use, my battery now does not last very long after i installed sky-ics and stuff, lemme know
flash faux sky-kernel 009m and use fauxclock app and underclock to - 75 mV, then ur laughing
Where can I get ahold of the faux clock app?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA Premium App
Faux kernel is flashable through cwm, and fauxclock is the app to overclock/undervolt. My phone does -100 mV, but urs might not. Set it and use the phone for a couple hours before checking the "set on boot" box. Also decreasing the Max CPU will help as well. I find 1.2 to be a good balance without losing any noticable speed

Faux Kernel by far. If your looking for speed and snappiness then Da_G kernel
Does under or overvolting give me anything other than impact to my battery life and maybe damage the CPU?
damaged CPU? Probably not, the kernel won't really allow u to do that, and the phone will reboot first, plus the app has very safe limits and is user friendly. Its y I recommended it over system tuner, which is for more advanced users. Undervolting is strictly for increase in battery life, its the reason we do it. Same speed, more battery, without getting into a derailed explanation as to y
Personally i find that da_g .3 kernel works great for battery life because it can idle at 54 mhz. although if you feel comfortable undervolting that is the true key to amazing battery
This is wrong, the kernel doesn't actually perform at 54mhz, the PPL isn't capable of this, its purely aesethics, its actually running at 192. This is from the mouth of Da_G himself. Faux kernel 009m has been proven in my own personal tests to have just the same battery as dag, and his kernels scale better becuz they have more frequency options. Wifi tethering however does not work with his kernels, which makes me sad
Kernel by faux123
I have also read that kernel by faux123 is supposed to be really good and the battery lasts much longer, and I'm very tempted to do so. But I'm unsure what the exact steps I need to take in case I want to revert back if something doesn't work well.
Assuming that I've already done nandroid backup:
1. Go into CWM and wipe date/factory.
2. Then go to wipe cache partition and clear it out.
3. Go to advanced and wipe Dalvik cache.
4. Go to Backup/Restore and restore from SD card.
I'm not sure if I should do steps 2 & 3, which basically I'm undoing what was done, as per instructions (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437563).
I currently have a rooted Stock Rom (bloated).
Android Version = 2.3.5
Baseband Version = I727UCKJ2
Kernel Version = 2.6.35.11
Thanks for the help.
thank you. what about overvolting? Any benefit?

for most general purposes, absolutely nothing, just kills battery faster.

Here are the exact steps you should follow. If u want better battery get his mainline 009 release, its in post 311 of his kernel thread, and download that to SD card. Boot into CWM and backup first. Then wipe cache and dalvik. Flash kernel from SD. Wipe dalvik and cache again, reboot and wait. Done

Thanks icenight89, I'll definitely gonna try that and report how it goes. I was just thinking ahead about what should I do if changing kernels made things worse then what to do (besides just a restore in nandroid).

Search the dev section for something called darkside. It cleans up more traces before u flash a nandroid or a new rom. Has helped me clear up a mess more than once

Darkside
Cool, it is the one that I had found! Thanks doc and icenight.
Not seeing difference
I managed to flash the kernel successfully, but honestly I don't see any difference in battery performance, as far as extended life is concerned. What I did notice was an improvement in the performance of the Skyrocket as indicated by Antutu Benchmark. My previous number was 5730 and afterwards it showed 6570. I flashed it last night. The battery went down from 100% to 91% in about 5 1/2 hours. I had left the email client open (forgot to close it out). I'm not sure if there's a standard testing procedure, like watching a movie continuously and doing stuff on the web at the same time, etc.
Any ideas? Thanks.

First post! Hopefully it's in the correct place!
Anyways,
I have rooted my phone using the ACE Hack Kit. Once that was completed I wanted to use the cyanogen ROM(recommend from a friend). I fully wiped from phone and then ran the cyanogen zip. Everything is fine until I use my phone for an extended period of time(for instance when I'm trying to set up my phone). For some odd reason my phone will freeze and I will be forced to take my battery out. From what I've read/understand I have done everything properly. Is there anything that I possibly missed or have not done that will cause these random freezes?
Thank you,

You or anyone wouldn't happen to know off hand if the kernel is UVed or OCed? This sounds like a UV or OC problem. Its an easy thing to fix if it is and I find that's is always best to rule out the easy stuff first! Some phones don't like to be UVed or OCed at all and freezes like this sometimes are caused by exactly that, UV or OC.
edit: and oh yeah, WELCOME! If you really like CM ROMs, give absolution a try (at the very least, if you or someone doesn't know if the kernel is UVed or OCed, you're be using a ROM I'm familiar with and if the problem persists on this ROM, diagnosing the a UV or OC problem should be fairly simple and I'll know how to get that fixed quickly for you since I haven't used the straight CM ROM in quite some time!) Actually come to think of it, did you check the md5 number? you could have downloaded a bad link causing a bad flash. It's rare most of the time but I have seen it happen..
If you havent downloaded any apps and dont mind reflashing the ROM just down load the full wipe place in ROOT (No Folder) of SD Card go into recovery.
Full Wipe (DO NOT RENAME AFTER DOWNLOAD)
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=CJPE5CB7
1. Choose zip from SD Card (Full Wipe 1.5) and Install
2. Choose zip from SD Card (Cyanogen ROM) and install
3. Reboot system and enjoy.
I dont like to do the wipe cache, wipe dalvik whatever method, the zip 1.5 does a full wipe all on its own. Its an EXT4 Wipe so I use it for all EXT4 ROMS that I like to try out.
!!!WARNING: When you flash the full wipe do not exit recovery without installing your ROM. So make sure that when you enter into recovery thru Rom Manager to reflash make sure that you have both (Full Wipe Zip) and (Your ROM Zip) on your SD Card before installing.
I tried cyanogen and completed hated it. Absolution is the Bomb!!! But to each their own flavor.
ENJOY

Not a problem man! Be aware though with the 1.5 wipe that it DOES format your system and data to EXT4, and if I'm not mistaken if you make a back-up on EXT 4 and then format back to EXT 3, it will not work and the same applies for vice versa. If you do end up trying Absolution just drop on by the Q & A if the freezing problem persists, I or one of the devs will try to give you hand the best we can..feel free to PM if you go with Absolution
So does the 1.5 wipe SDCard also? will EXT4 end up being a problem? Also, will do! I really appreciate the help!
I'll def give absolution a shot!

No, if you use the full wipe it pretty much just does the wipe data, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache in one flashable zip. I typically use the 1.5 then wipe data, cache and dalvik cache. It is completely overkill and really not necessary but I do it just the same. No, EXT4 should no cause a problem. I'm pretty sure that almost all the ROMs are now EXT4 supported. I believe it would say it if it wasn't at this point. I know the major ROMS (ARHD, CD, Bindroid, MIUI) are all compatible with EXT4. The only issues you will find with EXT4 is the issue I mentioned in my first post and if you want to use gene's tool to unroot.
Welcome to xda and yes I had the same problem I was setting up setcpu and I sneezed and I accidentally pushed it all the way over to 1.9 and my phone didn't like it it just froze...I was worried :/ so I turned my phone back on and went into setting and forced setcpu to close (mind you it took a few restarts lol) but yes I had let it reset itself and now it's working again I just need to remind myself to do a nandroid once a day xD hehe

I believe there is a 1.3 wipe that formats to ext 3 again, just in case the OP wanted to format to ext3 before flashing a new ROM as opposed to flashing a new rom and then having to wipe and then flash again.
Cool Thx I'll do s search for the 1.3. It be good to have.

OK. So I bought this tablet the other day at a local Best Buy, and so far I am loving it. Already have it rooted and have a custom ROM installed. However, I have a couple questions that are pretty simple, but I just want to make sure before I screw it up.
1) What is the proper way to flash a rom on this tablet? I know on my phone, I have to first wipe data, then format /system, and then format /boot. I am not sure if doing the same method would be safe on this tablet or not, and I don't want to brick it by accident.
2) What is the best kernel? I am using Revolver's ROM, and am currently using the Prime OC kernel, but have also used the Blades kernel pandatest @ 1.5GHz. I tried to push it to a little over 1.6GHz on the Blades kernel and got some stability issues.
That's pretty much all I really need to know about this tablet. So far I am loving it, and won't part with it anytime soon. Thanks again for reading.
Some roms have a script that you download then flash. This script will wipe everything in your internal memory (and external I believe). Then after flashing this, you go and flash the rom you want.
Other Roms simply have you wipe data/cache just like on a phone, then flash the Rom.
I guess it depends on the developers themselves, so look at the instructions on their page.
I have found the Prime OC kernal to be the one I liked the most. Very stable, and good battery life. Also very stable at 1.4-1.5GHz
You really shouldn't have any reason to go higher then that to be honest.

I was just wondering if I go into the recovery, go into mounts and storage, and format the system and data from that, if it could damage anything crucial like the bootloader or anything. I just don't want to end up bricking, but I also want to make sure I am doing a proper full wipe when installing a new ROM.

Do not format System ever. When installing roms it will do that for you. Data is fine to format. If you are having problems with a rom you Factory reset which wipes data then wipe the cache partition.

OK. That's what I was wondering. I know on my Nexus S 4G, a full wipe makes you wipe system as well. I wasn't sure if that was safe to do on this tablet.
i have been having issues using the infinity rom when multitasking. for example when i am using pandora thats all i can do. if i try browsing or anything while on pandora my phone freezes and restarts. and everytime i try to overclock it to 1.3ghz it freezes and restarts as well.. this is the process i am using to flash this rom.
1. coming from teawstock v1.4 (latest build), pb&j kernel, tweakstock is already ext4... right.. but thanks to imnuts, he provided the proper conversion tools needed in case i were to be RFS... lol, thanks buddy for this rom in advance. i have flashed everything available for this phone and your rom is by far my favorite... hahaha. i will post a screen capture of my quadrant standard to show you how much ive tweaked my ****.. lol. i think my last benchmark was around 2360...
2. data foctory reset/ wipe cache/ dalvik
3.mount system
4.flash rom/TSM parts, love the TSM parts by the way!!!!!
5. reboot phone.
Can you OC to that level on a different ROM? Your phone just may not be able to go that high.

I guess I can't tell you to use the non-tsm rom then eh? I find TSM to be too buggy and cause more problems than extra goodies, plus theming can edit just about any part of your phone on any Rom, icons, statusbar, you name it.
Anyway whenever I flash a new rom I always revert back to stock with the charge.pit file to make absolutely sure that my partitions are set up correctly. A little more time consuming than just wiping data but I have never had an issue jumping from one Rom to the other.
To make sure I was back to ext4 since I was flashing from stock straight into InfinityRom, I flashed Imosey's kernel (which has lagfix) and autoconverted me to ext4, then once my phone booted with ext4 I just wiped and flashed PB&J kernel again. Nice and quick, flashing the kernels to get me to ext4 took all of about 3 minutes. Now I have InfinityRom, PB&J (w/ the awesome advanced sound tweaks), and no lag. If you wanna give it a shot I can help shoot you some links for all the files I mentioned.
Also be careful not to OC too high, there is a point of diminishing returns.
cliMACtic, yes that would be great. I found the updated infinity rom but have never returned my phone to stock. Links and a little instructions would help. Thank you

I recently installed CM10.0 (The stable release) on my gs3, and I'm not too happy with the severe battery drain and glitchy lockscreen, so I want to swicth back to a TouchWiz based ROM that will provide a good balance of performance and great battery life. I have two questions. First, is there anything special I have to do with transitioning back to TouchWiz from CM10.0? I know I had to install the gapps package, but the factory wipe should remove that right?
Also ROM suggestions for stable performance with ability to tweak more settings, but at the same time retains healthy battery life? After researching a bit, CleanROM or Synergy seem like my best bet, but I would like opinions from more experience users than myself, I'm still pretty new to this.
Thank you in advance! :good:

Hey xNali,
I was in a similar position, in which I went from TW to CM10 stable, back to TW. To go back, all I did was, in Clockworkmod recovery, wipe the phone/factory restore, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, and then flashed the TW ROM.
As to your second question, I am using CleanROM 5.6 w/ lean kernel. I am only on the first battery cycle with very minimal usage (less than 1 hour of screen time), and I got about 1 day and 5 hours of battery life on it. Thus far, CleanROM seems to be very stable and I have yet to experience any issues - no apps crashing, wifi, BT tether all work, no screen flickering. At the same time, I use my phone primarily for work emails, so others on the board may be able to provide better advise.
In addition to CleanROM and Synergy, Jelly Beans also seems to be very popular (based solely on the # of posts in that thread).

I can't find the thread, but another thing I remember reading was to install CleanROM and, while still in recovery, flash the kernel (find Lean Kernel here - make sure you download the TW kernel, and not the AOSP one).
Once the kernel is flashed, and before you reboot, someone suggested clearing cache, dalvik cache, fix permissions, and then reboot. No idea what fix permissions does, and how it affects how the ROM and kernel run.
Also, what others have said is to allow the ROM to settle a few battery cycles to see the full effect of the ROM/kernel. Again, I have no idea how this has any effect on battery life, but a lot of people seem to swear by it.
Hope this helps.
I will give that a shot tomorrow. My other worry is I had to revert back to stock when I was flashing CM10 the first time because it was stuck on roaming and on stock you cannot change from NV to RUIM/SIM and it was stuck on roaming. Is there an option in CleanROM to change it or will it be ok when I flash it? I was stuck on roaming and had to flash back to CM10 change the setting then flash back to stock.

You'll be fine when you flash clean ROM 5.6. When you're wiping cache and dalvic you shoul also format system. That will insure that you get a good clean install. Also is your imei backed up just in case? There is a thread on how to back it up if you need to.

I would like to recommend me a custom rom. I would prefer to be very smooth and a good performance. I don't care too much about themes. Until now, I've tried several Lola's old roms and they are good, but I think that is time to update my phone to a rom based on 4.2.2.
Also, I've two questions:
---Lola's roms are optimized for our devices or they are just ported ?
--- Do you recomend to use Ram Manager Pro or V6 SuperCharger by zeppelinrox? V6 SuperCharger, Kickass kernelizer and 3G TurboCharger are good for our phone?
Sorry for my bad english.
I would suggest CM10.1 A8 by master dhiru1602.
but first you need to backup your efs folder (thread here).
Lola's roms (based on CM10 or CM10.1 by dhiru1602) are ported to our device because we don't have Jelly bean stock roms.
well I don't use any of them... V6 SuperCharger seems to be more rated but Ram Manager Pro is easier to use
Notice: to enable "Performance" and "developer options" in CM10.1...7 hits on the Build number.

Sorry for hijacking the thread. But I have some doubts about switching to a new rom. Currently my phone is facing these issues:
1) Wifi does not work for more than 10 feet, within the same room too. 50% strength at 2 feet distance from the router.
2) Battery backup is gone crazy low to about 9 hours on standby. Can't leave the phone unplugged for night, as by morning it is almost dead. (I guess it might be just my battery dying out).
3) Camera does not pick up any light at all. It is always too dark for any image.
I am currently using Cf-root by skin 1980 as the kernel, and the stock rom XXLE4. My common usage is playing games, occasional camera usage, internet using wifi/3g, and gps. Also, I am using go launcher themes, and stock rom's facebook sync to save contacts.
I am unsure if I should backup everything and reflash the phone with stock rom or go with a new one. CM10.1 looks good, but I am still unsure about specifically these two issues:
•Doesn't have wings
•Doesn't have 4 processor cores
How much will this affect my usage scenario? Based on my usage scenario, should I go for a new rom, or stock one?
Also, how can I best backup my synced contacts?

If you like stock roms, try DDMF1 and rooted using Bam kernel (PDA_BCK_CF-root_universal_beta14fix.tar)...you will get the best battery life
CM10.1 by dhiru1602 is awesome (and all the other JB roms especially Lola's roms) but GB is better for gaming and battery life
check this thread!

Thanks for the response. Actually, I don't prefer stock at all, just the facebook sync thing. Saves me the hassle of saving the contacts. Also, I guess that low a battery life has something to do with dying battery, rather than rom. I think I should give custom JB rom a try, but before that was wondering if switching to cm10.1 will be worth it or not. If it does not bug out a lot, I will definitely prefer cm10.1. But as you mentioned, if it is slow at gaming, I would stay with stock for now.
BTW, is that wifi issue a normal thing? I get about 50% strength on stock rom, even if I keep my phone next to router,
Edit:
I checked that thread. Most of LoLation's post talk about how stable JB roms are now. While CM10.1 talks about not having all processor cores working. How much difference does that cause? Will it be extremely noticeable in the smaller games? I don't do games above 50mb anyway, so most of extreme games are out of question. heaviest game I play on my phone is temple run 2, and cut the rope. Will JB rom cause them to stutter too?
No, for normal games you won't notice any difference and some games work better on JB but i didn't get some heavy games to work on JB like NFS most wanted or dead trigger (i can run temple run Oz even on 600MHz frequency and conservative covernor).
If you go for JB roms, try to use greenify app...it will increase your battery life.
CM10.1 A8 is almost complete and it's really stable and smooth but has very small bugs.

A balanced rom?

Sorry for delayed response. Was stuck with family issues.
I have some issues on Gingerbread stock, with temple run 2. If you say it can work with even 600MHz frequency, I will take your word on it. As for stability, small bugs are fine.

I hope any one of them support facebook sync. Nothing makes me smile more than not having to manually backup my contacts.
Seriously though, I will keep looking for a contact backup tool in the forum. If I find one, will try EHNDROIX. S4 sux, so "Like S4" is not a good rom for me.

Hey bro, I didn't play temple run 2, I said that I can run temple run Oz with 600MHz frequency on DDMF1 (I stick to DDMF1 because I get about %2 battery consumption in deep sleep even with a fat battery).
I you are looking for an app to backup/restore your contacts here is a good one.
Best regards
you can try proBAM ROM. it is quite stable then any other rom.

Thanks. That app sounds perfect for the job. Will check it out. :highfive:
As for game issue, I guess it might be specific with that game, but never mind, a game is not worth more than having better OS. :good:
Edit:
Tried installing the stock rom from scratch before flashing jb ones. As soon as I install cf-root, it simply says "Can't mount sdcard". Tried with a different cf-root and stock rom, same problem. Can't flash any jb roms because of it. Stock roms work well, even CWM scripts work fine. But, in recovery mode, it simply does not mount the internal sdcard.

Try to format your sdcard using cwm recovery.
BTW...hitting the "thanks" button is easier than write it

Ok, I will try that too.
And sorry, totally missed that button because of white background. :silly: Also, that super backup is awesome. Much better than titanium backup for me.
Edit: Nope. Same issue. "Can't mount sd card". Here is what I have done. Repartition and flash froyo (XXKPE). Flash DDLF2 (XXLE4). Flash the CF-root and then factory reset. Wiping dalvik cache works, but can't wipe battery stats. There is no message when selecting "wipe battery stats". IIRC, this happened last time too, and so I went back to stock rom. Also, as soon as I wipe dalvik cache, it stops booting and gets stuck at boot screen. Something is seriously wrong with this phone, I think.

Try - wipe data/factory reset - from cwm menu. It worked for me when I was trying to flash DDLF2.

Tried. Same response. After flashing DDLF2, I did wipe cache, dalvik cache and data. Still hangs up. If I don't wipe cache, it boots but that same "unable to mount issue" exist.
Exact error in recovery mode after flashing the DDLF2. "Can't access to '/system/csc/KOR/system'". Any idea what this might be?

No idea!. Try without sim and ext sd card. If does not work out try flash DDLF2 (if possible rooted) with odin again without sim & ext sd. Clean everything from cwm and reboot. Good luck.

Thanks a ton! Flashing without sim worked. Although, tbh, I did downloaded a different cf-root from that "big list of cf-root thread". But, it works wonders now.
Also, you were right. S4 might suck, but Like S4 is pretty smooth. Testing it out further, now. Once again, thanks a lot.

You are welcome. Probably smiling now.. Never mind. I found Like S4 is not stable after using 3 days, even if I change to Dhiru's kernel. Faced two sudden hot boot once after a call end and other while unlocking. Faced black screen whenever I tried to backup with Titanium. No problem at all with supper backup and other apps.
Anyway, we are here - happy to help each other.

Ha ha! yep, definitely smiling now. Testing it out, for battery backup first. Hopefully, it will stable for me. Did a fresh install of everything, afterall, so I deserve some perks for that. noticed one weird issue though; even if I use go launcher, the default ui keeps running in background. hopefully this does not suck up all the battery. If not, I can now keep on trying all the roms.
Also, titanium is absurd in comparison to super backup; no contacts backup, and restore ask for permission for every app. Can't believe I was stuck on it for so long.
BTW, I have noticed the weird lack of fm, alarm clock, and facebook sync in all custom roms. Why do we hate these things? Atleast fm and alarm clock are a necessity of sorts.
