What is the Best Modem Dutches County NY??? - Captivate General

I live in Fishkill, NY in the Hudson Valley. I have ICS and get pretty poor reception and drop a lot of calls.
Anybody in the xda community that live in the area that know of the best modem to flash? I have used several, some with OK results, but never good enough.

JK4 has proven to be the best all around modem for me in my area of southeastern MA. You have to download a few and try them - no one can recommend one other than give a rough guess, obviously, because of your area. I have fiv modems on my SD card for use if I go somewhere that JK4 won't work well in.

I looked at that map and I noticed like 5 modems near you, have you tried any of them?
i9000
- KC1
- JV4
- UGKC1
i897
- KB1
- KH3
I know I was getting bad reception where I live(Buffalo, NY) but i9020 UCKF1 gave me the best results all around where I actually live except 1 small area, which I don't care about...

Using JK3 right now with decent results so far. All the ones you listed are about 70 miles from me. I have used KC1 and its awful. If JK3 is satisfactory, I'll post that up on the map, but if not, I'll try the others.

Yeah, on that map the closest place was Toronto, Canada, and I believe that was JV4, and it wasn't doing very well so I gave up on those, now the one I have gives me service basicaly every where I go regardless.

not true. my phone is build no. 1012 rev 0.4 and everything works as expected, including GPS.
Mine has never ever, locked once!!!
Mine is 1007 stock and I've always been able to use the GPS. So imho it's pretty much luck of the draw.
I don't even care anymore. I've given up on Samdung to be honest.. terrible support and no communication for their 10 million galaxy s devices.
For what its worth, I have a 1006 build and gps is marginal at best when tracking - regardless of which ROM and gps cocktail files I throw at it.
Supposedly the newer builds have better tracking, but there isn't any PROOF.

Samdung... Clever. I prefer Samsuck myself.
I have a model 1009 running Serendipity 2.0, and my GPS gets a very quick lock and maintains lock when I'm driving in the car for the most part.
I had 2 1008's that both had great gps with Darkys rom and very spotty if any lock with other roms. I now have a refurbished 1007 running Darkys that locks fast and tracks great too.
I have a 1007, that I got to replace my old 1007 and the new phone's gps works perfectly with any rom I've used. Guess I got lucky.

I have to agree that GPS on my Captivate isn't great since day 1 either.
Recently I've been using Designgears Perception build 10.0, GPS has nothing but spectacular. Did a few long-drive road test and didn't lose signal even once and testing it with short trips for about a week now. Signal lock is within a minute. That is with both Google Maps/Navigation and CoPilot Live. A round trip from St. Robert to St. Louis, MO then from St. Robert, MO to Fort Smith, AR and back and GPS has been Spot on. This is with Perception Build 10.0 - Before I made the trip back from Fort Smith, I decided to update to Perception build 10.1 and GPS just gave out on me... did not work at all... get all kind of GPS signal but can not be locked into 3D to get an accurate position. Great thing I still have Build 10.0 on the phone decided to flash back from Build 10.1 to 10.0 and GPS is miraculously work the way it meant to be. This is the first time GPS on my Captivate has been working so well for me ever since day 1. I almost made a jump to Windows Phone 7 because of it. Now, I don't have to anymore, all thanks to Designgear.

I'm curious...
If you look at all the messages and statements here that the GPS on the Galaxy phones don't work, one would think (at least anecdotally) that a large percentage of the phones' GPS's don't work. Does anybody have any numbers showing the percentage of the phones with the problem? I mean, with multi millions of phones sold, one would think that you would hear more of it outside the tech stream media. Maybe it has been, and I just didn't notice. Does anybody have any link to the number/percentage of phones affected?

Nah, that data doesn't exist. You could start a poll thread. It'd be skewed towards XDA users (which might comprise in part those that find their phone inadequate) but that'd give some idea.
My phone varies from poor gps tracking to completely unfunctional depending on the ROM. Incidentally, all 2.2 i9000 were 100% broken for me, but 2.2.1 i9000 brought it up to "crappy". YMMV

It's like the iPhone antenna. They're all broken, but many people don't notice or understand the problem.
So the company spits in your face and goes to the bank.
Some people think this is acceptable, I don't. That's why I shall never but another Samsung phone again.

Ive tried every ROM and none of them work with my GPS. It will track me for periods of 30 seconds, then the circle around my arrow gets huge and rarely locks again.

Minus the fact that the iPhone antenna actually works... That thing never loses my position... NEVER. A simple case on the phone remedies the issue... with the captivate, there is nothing you can do but keep returning the phone.
My GPS is perfect. I have 10 locks in within 30 seconds. This is my second captivate due to me dropping the first one and the screen breaking. When I used the GPS on that device I got a Max of 3 satellites with 1 lock. I think it its that they have slightly updated the device as time has passed on.

I apologize if I put it in the wrong forum, but I didn't think that editing the build.prop file or regulating 4G speeds that AT&T hasn't "given" us access to yet was a general question.
Aside from that, is it possible?

Your missing what the dev section is for.
If someone had a custom Build.prop they wanted to share, that is a Dev post. Asking a question about development is not.
no, from what I've been tinkering with in the test settings (accessed with *#0011#) and pressing menu, back, selecting "network control", then "hspa cat control", I'm able to get better speeds on CAT 10 than CAT 14, but other's speeds may vary. (I know I'm a heavy user that uses over 15 to 20 GB per month too, so it may just be going through a CAT that I'm not throttled on too.... )
But with all above, I agree that this should be in General....
the inspire has hsupa disabled foe the att version with a line in build.prop. hsupa has been disabled on all att phone cept the iphone and the infuse. tere have been different meathods to disable it but is irrelevant because the infuse has it enabled. ther may be other settings to change but not to get even better speeds but I don't think it will be in build.prop or yield the same results.

No, AT&T has. HSPA+ is still 3G, even though AT&T calls it 4g. They may re-brand all the user-facing stuff to say 4G, but the phone's technical information that you aren't supposed to see will refer to it by its technical term, 3G.
if its not LTE , its not 4g Sorry to burst your bubble. I truely miss Tmobile when it comes to data. I would get around 6megs down all the time on "3g". I dont even get 3 most times with at&t and the upload is such horrible ****.

LTE isn't 4G either, if you want to lump HSPA+ into ' it's not 4G' category. LTE currently offers nothing remotely close to the original ITU specs.

I typically get 3-4 Mbps at work/home. Last week I was about 4 miles away, got 8.9Mbps. Another day I was about 5 miles further, got 5.5 Mbps. Depends on which tower you're on.

[Q] Is there a way to recalibrate signal strength?

After rooting with Infused it is showing 3/4 sometimes 4/4 bars in my apt and I know for a fact that I have next to no service depending where i am and always had 0 or 1 bar before rooting. Now it shows almost full but will not send/receive texts. I used to be able to send texts if I sat it on the end of the couch but now I don't even get that.
I know you have to calibrate the battery after installing a rom but do you have to do something similar with the signal strength as well? Mine is way off.
theres no calibration for signal strength.

Yes they do. AT&T doesn't get that great of service in my place. The Infuse does seem worse than my iphone as far as reception I just need to move. Weird thing is that this phone will show full bars but can't even send a text. Knowing my signal strength before installing a rom I know it was always at 1 or no bars depending where it was in my apt.

Try returning to stock. Really sounds like a tower went online for you.
As to not being able to send a text - I stopped being able to send texts a few days ago, but I can't send anything from no less than 3 different phones using my SIM.
Can you call out or use data?
I can but I have to be in a perfect spot. I just picked up an AT&T 3g micro cell tower. Supposed to give me 5 bars in the house. Where I am is really a dead spot for ATT. I'm out right now and the phone is working great out side of that area.

T-Mobile Towers App

Does anyone has the old version of the T-Mobile Towers app?
The old app displayed a Google map of all the locations of T-Mobile's towers. But the last update just gives a registration screen and nothing else. I'm sorry I updated and didn't have a backup.
If someone could please post the old .apk file, I'd be grateful! Thanks!

2 issues to consider ... First that tower may not have t-mobile service on it. The second is, apparently if you're at ground level below a tower you supposedly don't get good signal because it transmits outwardly not straight down... I don't know if that's true but it's a line we gave customers when I worked at T-Mobile LOL...

It's true. It doesn't transmit straight down for safety reasons - you don't want people in the immediate vicinity getting slammed with full-power RF. Might get everyone sterile.

All antennas are directed at a slight angle going otherwise they would be going straight out which would give a lot more customers near the tower no signal, or point it further down which would drop the overall coverage of the tower.
Also noted not all towers have a high speed backbone even if the antenna might be 4G compatible. A lot of small towns don't have affordable fiber yet so they are running off of old t1's still

s3 signal not that great what else to get

For work I drive in fringe areas and 250 mile trip my s3 was dropping a lot of calls I would say 12 times.
I called vzw and they sent a replacement now I'm about half the drop calls I had before.
What do you guys suggest for a good signal phone?
I was looking at motto hd maxx
Have you tried flashing a new modem?

Have not tried to flash a new modem. I figured it's the antenna in it and could not be fixed

I will have to root this replacement s3 I got and try your suggestion.
Thanks
the k3 radio should be rolling out in the jellybean update today OTA. maybe wait and see how it is. if you are not opposed to rooting and unlocking the bootloader then i highly recommend cleanrom.
Motorola is a great phone for reception, probably the best imo.
Regardless of the radio on a GS3, it simply doesn't get the same reception some Motorola and Apple phones get... At my house, with the newest radio, I have to go outside in one particular area and stand still to make a call. With my old Droid 2 and my iPhone 4S I could easily walk around, inside and outside and keep a phone call with minimal issues.
The new radio helped mind you, i'm not out of signal 30% of the time now.... but it's still not quite there.
It's different for everyone. I get the same as my HTC incredible. I tested and compared before and after. Like others have said, maybe a different modem will help.

I agree. I work on a wind farm and my co workers have iPhones. They get better service than I do and I've gone through every modem out there.

As someone has said, it is different for everyone. At my office everyone has Android except 1 person. The iphone user struggles with signal there while the majority of Android users have a fairly strong signal, including me with both of my S3's. One is stock, one is CleanRom.

I love the s3 but not getting a decent signal to talk in fringe area is killing it for me.
I get pretty bad and bipolar reception on my s3. Flashed every modem so far. The phone just doesn't have the best antennae. Pretty sure that's been established.

Motorolas tend to bre a bit better based on my experience (and looking at signal strengths, data spedd, etc...). But I really like this phone and I'm in a decent enough signal area for this not to be a factor. My wifes iPhone is actually a bit worse than my S3.
Should've seen the Galaxy Nexus... That phone was horrible. I thin it's a Samsung thing.

This has been established for 3 years lol. Samsung makes the most feature rich phone but just doesn't do the best radios. My wife's does better than her nexus did, but still worse than my rezound with my radio combination in her terrible service area. But, it still is the best Samsung she has had as far as reception on a Samsung goes... In her ****ty service area.
Called vzw to see if I could swap phones I told them.id like to swap my s3 for the moto hd.
The lady helping tried her best but her supervisor only wanted to swap an original razr maxx.
I told her I didnt think that was a fair trade and then she pulled up a comparison and agreed with me.
Her hands were tied so what do you do

Wait a few hours and call back. I tried the keep calling back thing when I was trying to get my upgrade moved up 1 week so I could get the SGS3 and they started saying when I asked about an early upgrade that since I wanted the GS3 they couldn't do it and then started saying no to an early upgrade.
I'm right there with the OP on the terrible reception. I've had Samsung phones before and they all were bad compared to Moto, but the GS3 is the worst I have had. I never had the Nexus so I don't know how bad it was but this is terrible. I constantly have to move my phone around and around and hit resend at least 5 times for every text. Phone calls rarely happen because they just won't come through. I find out after I leave the house that someone had called and left a message. If I make a call I have to walk around in my yard until it finally picks up a signal. Its very very sad that this phone has such ****ty reception because its such a great phone.
OP, if you want to switch wait until the evening shift and call until you get someone extremely friendly. That's what's always worked best when I have had a problem with anything. Any time I have called in the middle of the day for anything they are always assholes and don't really care what your problem is.

I just got back from visiting my mom down in Cochran. I live in Warner Robins and in Cochran my wife's gs3 had kicked to 3g at 600 kb dl speeds and on my rezound with my radio layout I was still able to pull 6 mb dl on 4g. I was able to maintain 4g. I also had 3 bars of service and 4g and in the house she had 1 bar of service and 0 data. Just signal for a call or text.
Basically it was such a large difference that my parents, as much as they like the gs3, will not even be able to buy one due to signal alone. They are gonna try out some razr hds possibly next week so next time I'm down I fan kinda get a better comparison seeing as how my rezound is far from stock lol. Wife's gs3 is bone stock no root ota jellybean
