Can I buy/trade my DX for another Verizon-based phone, and activate it with Verizon? It's the activation I'm mostly concerned about.
Thanks!
Yes, you can. Make sure the esn is clean or you won't be able to activate it. A quick call to VZW with the esn will confirm it.

Ok - I gotta little problem here. Since I've been gainfully unemployeed for a couple of months I haven't been able to pay my AT&T phone bill - so finally today they cut my service.
So here is my question - since I can't come up with the $158 bucks to turn it back on - can I unlock it and put a pre-paid SIM in it? Or has AT&T black-listed my unit somehow since I have an unpaid bill? I wouldn't have a problem with it being a T-Mobile prepaid or Cingular pre-paid or whatever - just as long as I can get a couple hundred minutes so I'm not completely without a phone...
Thanks!
If it's an AT&T prepaid sim you wouldn't have to unlock the phone to use it. AT&T won't "blacklist" your unit.
Of course if you wanted to use T-mobile prepaid, the phone would have to be unlocked.

Well that's good to know. That's one of the things I know Sprint does - if you have a phone that has an over-due balance - you're screwed - can't even sell the phone for someone else to use because they black-list the unit.
So basicly, I can like go down to wallmart and get one of the att prepaid cell phones that comes with a free $25 calling credit - and stick that SIM in my fuze and I'm good to go?
Or - even goto an ATT store and just buy a pre-paid SIM card ??
exactly... you could do either one of the methods you mentioned.
And I didn't know that about Sprint - that's interesting. Just one more reason why I will never leave a GSM carrier

Yep - and over the last few months I've discovered a few other things to.
1. On CDMA you can't surf the internet and be on a phone call at the same time. With ATT you can.
2. If you want to use the native dialer with VOIP - on CDMA a) the today screen plug in does not work and b) you can't really hear the other caller very well - you have to have a headset, the volume all the way up - and be in a quite room or you can't hear. With ATT you don't have this issue.
Only thing that I notice is that with ATT you can't use the native VOIP over 3G - just WiFi - of course in my case with no ATT service at the moment this really doesn't matter...geeze.

A. You first were talking about root.

There.
B. As for unlocking, ANY phone can be unlocked. It's a matter of calling your phone service provider and asking them to unlock it, or buying an unlocked one off ebay.
C. Make sure Sprint can operate with a Droid.
thanks. I had just figured you couldnt just call to get a phone unlocked. I wouldnt understand how an unlocked droid wouldnt work on sprint since sprint and verizon use the same tech(CDMA). How exactly would i go about finding out if it would work with sprint?

You're correct. They do both operate on CDMA. Yes, it's very easy to call and unlock. Tell them you will be traveling internationally and need your phone unlocked.
Opps, forgot to tell you how to find out if it will work with Sprint. Well, Google is nice. Sadly, I can't find anything myself telling me with a definite answer. I would call Sprint and tell them you have an unlocked Motorola Droid and are interested into transferring it to their service. They'll tell you whether or not they can use it. However, I wouldn't tell Verizon you're going to do that. They seem like they might get a little pissy about it.
My buddy gave me a brand new HTC Touch Pro2. He is on the Sprint network but I am on the Verizon network. I would like to unlock this phone and use it for verizon. I really need help with this and don't know how to do it. Can someone help me out ?
your friend wouldnt happen to this guy, would he? lol
anyway, technically theres nothing that needs to be done to "unlock" a sprint phone to use on verizon, but as a matter of policy verizon wont activated devices from a different network
well i have been told by several people that i have to unlock it. one of them actually use to work for verizon. but no that is not my friend lol.
Verizon checks the phone esn which is the cell phone equivalent of a vehicle's vin. They only allow their own phones on their network. There is no "unlock" needed, they simply won't do it and beyond faking the esn which is illegal, there is nothing you can do to get them to activate it.
actually there is a way, and some verizon reps also add esn to their bases, and yes you need a unlock code which only sprint will give, with which you can change some things, but i dont have detailed info, but ppcgeeks has some more info on it.
if you mean the MSL number you can get that using getSPC (although im not sure it would even be needed) but it still doesnt matter as its unlikely your going to get VZW to activate the phone unless you have a friend who can add the ESN, as a matter of policy they wont do it
So bottom line, can I or can I not do this. Is it impossible or what? . .
If so I am just going to sell this brand new phone and buy a verizon one.
Quick question. I may be picking up a Nexus S 4G on Craigslist. Seller said that phone is currently flashed for Cricket. Is it possible to flash it back to Sprint? And how would I go about doing that?
I know there's a chance of bad ESN, and I will confirm with Sprint that ESN is clean before I go ahead with the purchase.
Ask the seller how he put it on Cricket and reverse the process. You an also google how to put it on Cricket and reverse engineer the process.
So with you being able to do a ESN swap and activate a phone on your own with sprint can you get a phone from another carrier and activate it?
I know this maybe a silly question but I'm asking just to make sure.
So lets say I buy a phone with a bad ESN for another carrier. Could I take said phone and use Sprints new ESN Swap to activate it and get it working for Sprint?
Thanks in advanced.
