Having problems rooting a MyTouch 4G? Don't believe everything you've read. Downgrading isn't needed. I've been rooting phones for over 4yrs and here is how I achieved root access. (PERM root)
First: Head over to htcdev.com and unlock your bootloader (You will need ADB setup on your computer which isn't hard to do)
Second: You'll need to flash the recovery IMG to your device via CMD/fastboot
Third: Flash the "SU" IMG onto your device and that's it. DONE!!
No this isn't a full NAND unlock and doesn't provide S-Off but it does give you root access and Super User permissions.

This has been repeated over and over....htcdev unlock is very bad...it makes.everything even more difficult.

I wouldn't recommend rooting the htcdev way... Just saying.
There's no way to revert. Plus you need to flash the boot.img separately everytime you want to flash a ROM.. making the process harder.
But yes.. it is easier to root this way... I just wouldn't recommend it.

Congratulations. You're not the first one and not the second one on the forum that achieves perm root using HTC-Dev unlock.
But you forgot to write some other important info:
You won't get S-OFF and will stay on stock bootloader, which means - if you want to flash custom ROMs, for each ROM you'll HAVE TO EXTRACT AND FLASH KERNEL MANUALLY USING FASTBOOT, from that point and until the device is S-OFF and has engineering bootloader on it.
Now, I guess, you can go back to showing off your extraordinary rooting "skillz".

This thread is only 4 post long and chuck full of win.
Actually, if the OP wasn't trying to act like a pompous you-know-what, it could have become a proper rooting-without-downgrading-using-HTC-unlock-for-easier-downgrading thread. After all, it's easier to flash pre-rooted 2.2.1 in recovery, than it is to modify MISC partition and rely on PD15IMG auto-flash (people seem to make all the possible mistakes in copying and running this poor couple of scripts), and it only remains to check if the newer bootloader will block gfree or not (and it might) - and if it doesn't, we can have a newer and better rooting guide.
This wasn't a "HOW TO ROOT METHOD"
It was just a simple solution for those who didn't know anything about hboot downgrading and flashing kernals/recovery IMG's and etc. Rooting the MT4G can be a b*tch at times and I found this way to be quite simple and straight to the point so I shared my knowledge with anyone who it might help. Don't worry I will be getting better at posting on here LOL don't attack me on my FIRST post

Yes if you flash a stock image and kernal via Odin you will be back locked up,
Last line of the fore mentioned guide,
Step 10: Reboot! (You should now be booted into factory stock, LOCKED, and bloated ICS 4.0.4)

Yes flashing just the stock rom.tar will lock the bootloader...the stock kernel is there to remedy folks who got the verizon screen of death from flashing custom software witb a locked bootloader...it does not take but a extra minute to flash, so you might aswell just flash it to ensure a clean install. Im constantly trying different methods with odin and flashing back to stock. So dont be suprised if my guide is constantly changing. Were still early in development right now. No method is set in stone and things will continue to change.
Hi all, having a problem rooting my inspire 4g, when in Fastboot , it shows the phone is S-OFF but I have no root access.
I used the root checker app, and it says that my device is not rooted. I then used EasyAceRootTool, but when I select to root
my device, it says that ''the hboot needs to be updated'' and it then starts a download from HTCDEV. I have tried using this software
several times but my device is still not rooted.

I think it may also be worth mentioning that it was previously rooted but, got stuck on the white HTC screen and I had to flash the stock kernel
If someone could help me out would really really apricate it, as it has me pulling my hair out
thanks

Kenneth, if you are already S-OFF unlocking the bootlader will remove that. You just need to flash SU in CWM recovery and flash CWM first if you don't have a custom recovery. Choose flash CWM in the tool and then SU...you should be fine after that.

I'm not that experienced in this new htc development stuff nowadays, because it's been long time I havent browsed forums closely. Anyways a friend has this One SL phone, and somehow it's bricked and asked me to help him repair it, because I owned htc phone before and was more experienced (which I doubt now).
Here's the problem i'm facing and hoping someone could point me to some information where to start from. Device is S-On and haven't been rooted or bootloader unlocked or any thing else, its totally stock with stock recovery and rom. After powering the phone it boots ok, but when I get to lockscreen and try to unlock it it gives me some errors like : com.android.settings has stopped and beneath that message is another one which is hard to read because this one getting all the time, Unfortunately, System UI has stopped.
I tried to hard reset from bootloader because I cant get to recovery from there it gives me a sign and not getting any recover. So I only did factory reset several times, and clear data but that doesn't fix anything. I got some pictures of the error and bootloader screen if that can help anyone to give me some more information.
Btw i'm trying to find out what is the stock rom for this phone but can't find out how to get that information from a non fully working system. If that is possible I would flash stock rom and see if it will fix the problem.
I wrote a lot of text but I wanted to clarify the situation in my way.
Here are the pictures I took:

You can unlock the device, flash a custom recovery and flash a stock rom.
If you are locked, you can do pretty nothing.
is the SIM card good?

Do you mean locked like Sim locked or bootloader locked? If you mean Sim locked it is sim unlocked accepts all sim cards. If you mean bootloader how to unlock it can you guide me.
russellvone : It was without sim card inside when I made picture that's why it shows Emergency only.
Bootloader unlocked.
Go to www.htcdev.com and follow the steps there.

Ok I followed the steps and get the bootloader unlocked It says ***UNLOCKED *** but under that I still have SHIP S-ON . Can I use any shipped rom to flash this device now or what should I do if you can help me out.
Now you have to flash custom recovery (TWRP recovery) with fastboot.
Look into my index thread, you can find a link to the newest TWRP there.

Im on your page and following the information to install TWRP 2.6.3 but there's written with red letters
"Only for k2u & k2ul!
Important: Recommended for hboot 2.21!" and i'm on hboot 2.00 does that matter?
Works also on hboot 2.00.

Million thanks to you bro, i'm feeling happy knowing that in the world still exist people who are willing to help others, people like you. Thanks once again .
Any mod can update title to Solved, and maby a guide to someone in my situation
Glad, you've got it to work again.
I know this might sound dumb to some people, but I am trying to unroot and go back to stock, I have looked at alot of the tutorials on how to revert to stock, I have tried doing a complete unroot in Superuser then putting the 0P6BIMG.zip into my SC Card and letting the bootloader reload it but it ALWAYS come back with root.
Any idea's would be great. Don't have a good reason as to why other than I don't need root and would prefer to get OTAs from Verizon/HTC
Thanks in advance,
Nick

If you are talking about my ruu, that will take any future ota updates just fine as long as you 1) don't change any system files and 2) don't flash custom recovery.
Root alone will NOT make you fail otas...not on htc...

The ruu I have posted is the latest. I didn't bother to make one for the release os version as they had some really annoying bugs (like phones that were stuck in roam from day 1) etc.
Run the ruu and you will update fine whenever they release one. Afterwards you can flash my twrp I have posted in my ruu thread (or recovery of your choosing) and then re flash superuser.zip to reroot .. I suggest using flashify app to backup your stock recovery to your so card after the ruu ..it will let you flash back to stock recovery whenever you need to take an ota

Oh and, I have CF Auto Root and I use only Titanium Backup if that matter.
You must be 100% stock, unrooted to accept the update.
fastboot flash stock system.img then re-root.

What? that doesn't gonna solve my problem because I'm not gonna flash a system again and lose my data.
Thats an headache for me.
Many people have this problem, Read here:

Even unrooted stock devices. And I'm 100% stock rooted.
With fastboot flash system.img you don't lose anything of your data, only root.

Then flash a custom 5.0.1 rom with a custom recovery or you can never update BTW the update from 4.4.4 to 5.0(.1) is quite big so a full wipe after the flash is required or you`ll have fc`s all over the board.

I suppose you're not really familiar with this. Your data is not stored in /system. fastboot flashing a system.img only installs to /system. Only fastboot flashing userdata.img would overwrite your data, which you may note that I did not advise you to do.
Have a read of the "adb and fastboot" thread in General > Sticky roll-up
