[Q] Which CWM should I be installing - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I have a rooted Rogers 727R. Installed CWM 5.0.2.7 a few months ago after I rooted it. Installed with ROM manager I think.
However I've found a file called recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.3-hercules which seems to be a later version.
And now, I see people are talking about a touch version, ClockworkMod TOUCH 5.5.0.4 v2. I note from the instructions in the OP you have to use the DD commands, I assume no ROM manager install on top of the current version?
I like to keep up to date. What version should I have?
Thanks

i suggest you go to this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1383
and then take your time to review the pros and cons... there are no straight answers for your question.

I just use ROM Manager, use the latest Clockwork recovery using ROM Manager.

That takes me to the forum home page, not a thread.
Do you know if this one:
Recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.3-hercules
is even legit? The version number sounds too high.

that place is where all the custom roms are located... just look over what other people complement or complain about that specific rom. and look for pictures too!
i am not sure about the version you have there. it would be nice if you place a link for us to review it.

its just fakeflash for now, and the Hercules cement is just that, a hercules recovery image. Our phones r similar, but no guarantee it will work. I wouldn't flash it personally

Well, CWM and CWM Touch are two different things. If you flashed CWM from rom manager, open rom manager back up and you will see you have the option to also use CWM Touch (It's at the bottom). But from what I've read, there is no official CWM Touch for the skyrocket, but ports have been made. CWM Touch allows swiping rather then using the volume button, but in my opinion, I'd rather just stick to the basics so i don't mess anything up then try to mess with Touch. Just use Rom Manager and update CWM to the latest update...

I'm using the touch port for the SR and it works well the one in Tom manager theoretically should function like cwm for the t989 but remember certain functions don't work as well with the 989. the port has been built for our phones using our trees so should have better functionality on top of not wearing out physical buttons.

(CWM3) SGS4 Clockwordword Recovery fully working simplified procedure

I have been successfully using below procedure for couple of month to get Samsung Galaxy S 4G Clockword recovery fully working.
I followed below steps and I got Samsung Galaxy S 4G clockword recovery's Backup, restore and ROM.zip flashing fully working.
1. Install VKB5 Rom on phone using odin (Download mode on phone) from below link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=978836
2. Download "3e_recovery_installer.zip" from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
run the 3e Recovery Installer. When finished, close.
3. Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery via ROM Manager from market by selecting "Vibrant" when asked for phone type. Then reboot into recovery.
(You may need to reboot your phone if you get stuck on the ROM Manager "Reboot to Recovery" screen) (Just reboot, then attempt to reboot into recovery again)
At the green recovery select "reinstall packages". The first time will fail, run it once more, and you should now have the green CWM Recovery menu.
4. use Rom Manager to flash SGS4_data_mount_VKB5.zip from below link:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=4R3GI9O0
5- Now you should be able to backup, restore and flash Rom.zip files created with Deodexer using clockword recovery Rom Mananger.
Enjoy

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOehlwk_T94
Known Issues:
1- data folder 3rd party aplications i.e. none Google included in Rom.zip will not be flashed with rom.zip to the phone but can be installed later.
Note that data 3rd part aplication can though be backed up and restored with Clockword_recovery.
This is not the optimal solution for SGS 4G Clockword Recovery Mod. I have been waiting so long like all others on this forum for the offical ROM Manager Clockword Recovery Mod for SGS 4G. So I started loosing hope, therfore I tried to use others on this forum experiences to come up with a working Clockword Recovery Mod for SGS 4G. again this is working fine for me with a minor issue I already mentioned above in issues. If I find a better working Clockword Recovery Mod for SGS 4G I will switch to it as soon as possible. This one is satifying my needs for Backup, Restore; and flashing ROM.zip and zip files for now.
THIS IS A BETA TEST, I'M NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE SINCE THIS USES ANOTHER CWM METHOD FROM THE SAMSUNG VIBRANT
What rom is this again?

good question.... this has really been interesting, I've been working on both the T959 (TMO Vibrant) and then this one T959V (4g) to see the differences and I must say there have been more threads, comments, you name it but each have a problem or a lot of them. Of course I have been using the instructions & files accordingly and not using the same for the two phones, however there has been a lot I have used on the 4G that I used on the Vibrant.
All of the instructions seems to vary a bit as well (all using Odin). This one seems to make sense. I have been trying them all and changing things here and there as I go. I've been logging what . Did you revert to stock using Odin and if so which thread and how did it go? I'm curious. I'll post what happens with this.

Everyone should seriously wait until there is an official release for the SGS4G.
Telling people to use the Vibrant CWM version is not acceptable. This will add into the mix problems for people. Issues that will make it even harder for people to help diagnose when people post they are having issues.
Congrats on getting it to "work" on your phone. Thanks for sharing your experience, but everyone should be warned:
This method is not the right way to get CWM working on your phone.
Wait till CWM built by Dr Honk and Krylon360 is done and submitted to be included in ROM Manager. You'll save yourself alot of trouble and headaches.

Additionally, why are you instructing people to install KB5. Also why is this listed as CWM3 when it's still using AMEND for the scripting and not Edify? What is the actual version number of CWM, I'm guessing it's not CWM3.
Thanks for posting all the questions, I didn't see the Vibrant part, I personally wouldn't rely on it being 100% safe unless it's been running a while. Truth is I "think" I used Vibrant Desktop Toolbox on the SGS 4G & continued working on it for a while as if it was the Vibrant until I could barely see (4am). But did notice the FFC and went oh s......! I thought I had made so much progress from recovering it from partitioning the SD card through Rom Manager (wiped the internal SD), live and learn.
Now SGS shows an internal SD Card where the Vibrant shows only SD Card in recovery. So since then have been making small changes and comparing. Still in recovery and am yet to find a thread with all the Odin info that you need to know (like changing ports, which worked for me). So until I come across a method made for that device that gets me back to stock I'll continue playing and see what comes out of it. After the Vibrant wouldn't boot I decided to keep the SGS in hopes to be able to learn off of the themes and info I use from the Vibrant thread to modify for the SGS and soon the SGS's Forum would be as busy as the Vibrant's is. I had done a couple things before this but nothing risky, just learning, it was careless mistakes that landed me here.
I'm sure you agree that the most simplified way to flash CWM is with Rom Manager but since that's not an option at the moment we have to wait or try an alternative & what's development without getting creative?..?.
If anyone knows knows of a thread with working links & clear instructions to odin back to stock please let me know. SO many methods just minor changes which some have made a difference. I ended up piecing my own update zip and it went further than any other. I pieced together a rom from a reliable Vibrant developer and pieced it as needed with a couple others. Got past the way more than I thought I would have only encouraging me to do more until I realized I need to stop and get a phone working....so I got a new phone so I could be reached..
If I totally understand what you did then maybe I'll try your method & will give you an update. But if something went wrong I would rather know it was me to blame for using files used for Vibrant on SGS. Everything out says don't use sw made for Vibrant on SGS, If you know why this is okay or what to do to make the sw compatible that would be great for SGS! It was fun playing at this level but I want Trigger and everything else back on the Vibrant and learn to make the SGS custom as well. Enough with recovery and downloading, those views are going to be embedded in my screens.

Well this guy has been posting alot of stuff that is not stable. Including this.
Here is what is stable:
Follow the instructions to put the latest CWM Beta 3 on your phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13181141&postcount=1
Then all you have to do is boot into CWM and flash this ZIP. It's pretty simple, which is why what this guy is trying to get you to do is messed up.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074939
Additionally, there are numerous posts out there about how to use ODIN. Flash any one of the DEODEXED or STOCK TARS that are on the SGS4G forum. No need for using a PIT. It's again, pretty straight forward, just read anything BUT what this OP is trying to provide. DON'T FLASH STUFF for the ORIG VIBRANT onto SGS4G.
Joedeveloper is correct, the two phones are totally different. Partitions are way different, sgs4g are actually closer to epic than vibrant 3g.

When I saw the “Download "3e_recovery_installer.zip" from here:” I was skeptical.I had visions of when I used that method back in March and nearly bricked my phone. I was able to recover from that fortunately. I chose the Wait and see philosophy on this solution.

I think the user should change the title of the thread. This isn't really a simplified procedure and uses the old using AMEND for the scripting and not Edify like the newer CWM.
People won't be able to flash the Theme's that people have been posting in the Theme and App section and they won't be able to flash future ROM's and ports.

[Q] Rooted EE4 with CWM how to upgrade

I'm pretty sure I know the answer to this but I just wanted to be sure. I believe I used this thread several months ago (probably June) when I rooted my Charge running EE4: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122657
I haven't touched it since and now I would like to install either another ROM or the stock rooted Gingerbread (most likely another ROM).
My question is can I just download any ROM at this point and drop it on the SD card and then boot into recovery mode and install the ROM? Or could I also use the Clockworkmod ROM Manager app and install the ROM from there? Also do I have to disable the voodoo lagfix when installing these ROMs?
I believe I have the following versions:
ClockworkMod: 3.1.0.1 (according to the ROM Manager app)
CWM Voodoo Lagfix Recovery: 4.0.0.1 (This is what shows when I boot into recovery mode)
Thank you all in advance for your help! And yes I did do some searching before posting this, I just couldn't find something specific to my situation and wanted to be sure.

well..some of the new roms does not have a file that you can install using CWM from your SD card.....some of the roms install a new radio, kernal as well as the rom......and you would need to do this using a program called ODIN......
go into the development forum where you can get a TON of info!
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks

Sorry thought I did post this in Q+A...thanks for the info, I was looking at Humble 5.0 RC2 mentioned in this post:http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1293429
Seems like a good ROM and I like the theme. Any thoughts on going with that one? Thanks.

I've no issues with Humble. I've run it before with no trouble. That one in particular is based on EP4P (a slightly older leak). Danalo is supposed to be releasing a final build based on the official EP4 Gingerbread soon, so you might consider waiting for it.
Cool thanks for the info, I'll put up with this updater thing popping up until that comes out...hopefully soon!
One more quick question, just so I have a better understanding of the phone flashing process...are there three parts that have to be flashed?
Kernel
ROM
Recovery
Thanks.
Depends on the Rom. Like this one has everything.

[Q] Galaxy S2 Skyrocket - CM9 Nightly from July24th

After much reading through these forums, coming from never having flashed a ROM before, I was able to successfully flash and am thus enjoying CM9. I had been waiting for this to come out for the Skyrocket since I bought the phone last year, so, thanks
My question(s) is in relation to CWM Touch. I would like to update CWM to CWM Touch.
1) Is CWM Touch going to foul up any part of CM9? (that is, prior to CM9 i had CWM installed, but now due to "internetz confusionz" am unsure if the current version of CWM after CM9 flash, is one that came with CM9, or not)
2) Where I've read to basically never go near ROM Manager for flashing CM9 for now, what about using it to update its own CWM to CWM Touch? I see the option to do so but when I click it, it reads along the lines of "You must first install CWM before installing Touch"....which i thought i...or at least CM9 did..see question 1.
3) Alternate method to #2, I found " download.clockworkmod.com / recoveries / recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.3-skyrocket.zip "and have downloaded it. I thought perhaps I could simply flash this through CWM itself (due to another post somewhere saying this was ok, but it referenced a SGS2, not a skyrocket). Will doing it this way force me to reinstall CM9 (as yet, still other, posts on the internetz would have me believe?)
Overall the goal is to end up with CWM Touch and not have to reinstall CM9 as i've spent far too long customizing the crap out of (and enjoying) it.
thanks!
This is the general section. This thread belongs in the Q&A section.
General is for anything and everything so don't sweat it man. And for the using of ROM Manager I think you should be good to flash touch through it, although I have never tried. I flashed mine via Odin. As for the question will it affect your cm9 the answer is no.

lolno. If it was for anything then we wouldnt have a Q&A section and it would just be in general.
Although I marked the post as a question during submission, I have no problem with an Admin moving my post to a proper section if it will yield more responses so that I may average out any and all contradictions as well as receive answers to all questions.
thank you
To answer your question, recovery has NOTHING whatsoever to do with a ROM. They are completely independent. You can flash any recovery and it will not affect your ROM. Some ppl had issues with the new CWM recovery so I would recommend you to stay away. I do not know if it was fixed. I would highly recommend sk8terwiki's (sorry sk8 if I butchered the spelling ) 5.5.0.4 v4.2 recovery in the dev section. Its the one I use and it gets the job done. He has a zip that you can flash in CWM. I have not used TWRP but heard good things about it. To install twrp just get goo manager from market, hit menu->install open recovery script.
Sent from my SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
rolled the (weighted) dice based on swisser's response.
I "Installed" CWM via Rom Manager. What this really did was update me from 5.0.0.27 to 5.8.4.3 for the skyrocket (after i chose it from a menu).
*As discussed 30 something pages deep in the CM9 General thread, this **BROKE** the ability to flash anything from *EXTERNAL* SD Cards. Flashing from Internal worked fine, so I rebooted my phone and copied over the 5.8.4.3 CWM Touch i had downloaded from the site in my first post, to my Internal SD Card. Rebooted back to CWM and flashed from internal SD and now i have CWM Touch Working.
I've run out of tools and toys to flash so i haven't tested if CWM Touch will flash from External SD, but according to that thread, it does.
One thing i've noticed *MISSING/REMOVED.../Moved(?)* (basically i couldnt find the ****er) was the ability to Mount USB Storage while in CWM. This was a handy escape route for me previously and i'm sad to see it (seemingly) gone in both TOUCH and NONTOUCH 5.8.4.3
Moved to Q&A. General is not for "anything and everything". General is meant for discussions and or news regarding the device . Questions belong in Q&A. Side note OP did you try looking for you answers in CM9 discussion thread in general as well?
Cheers
Hint: I posted a quick fix there..

Is there a way to knew what rom is actually build for ure done through rom manager cuz i have tried a few roms from there but nothing worked rather i have to.restore from Odin everytime i have been unable to get a particular rom from there rather i was able to dload cm7 via the web and am using that but looking for an update, as per the rom i have is sky-ics on cm7 and have no problems with it except recently it has started rebooting or shutting the phone itself and takes a long time to start again but now even that rarely happens but still can anyone help me on this so i can have a proper fix and not end up in the same....

^^what prbassplayer said. you really really need to read. if none of these roms are working for you: you either dont have a skyrocket, or you're not reading all of the instructions. check out the dev section and the general section. if you read in both those sections you will find cm9. you could probably read my signature too... but dont go doing that until you do a lot of reading first. =/

Overall the goal is to end up with CWM Touch and not have to reinstall CM9 as i've spent far too long customizing the crap out of (and enjoying) it.
thanks!

Just odin cwm touch or re-flash from within current cwm recovery, don't use rom manager.
K thanks slot ill try to search for it then l, i was under the impression that i would be able to upgrade to cm9 since i already am on cm7.
Anyways thanks alot

[DEAD] ClockworkMod Recovery v6.0.1.5 - OBSOLETE THREAD. SEE UPDATE.

Just stumbled upon this site from clockworkmod, which allows you to build a recovery rom for your phone using either a stock or existing recovery rom.
I built two, one using Adlx's CWM 5.0.2.8 rom, and one using the stock recovery rom.
Both appear exactly the same when flashed, however the one build on Adlx's rom is slightly larger - I've yet to find the actual differences.
I have only included the one built on Adlx's rom, as it seems to work just fine, and I'm using his graphics.c file as well as his postrecoveryboot.sh file.
The other unfortunate part is that the power button no longer acts as the select button, and the "go back" option is not available in each menu.
Instead, you use the Enter and Backspace/Delete keys to select menus and to go back. The volume keys still act as navigation up and down, as well as the directional keys.
I'm honestly not sure if there are any benefits to having a more up to date recovery rom, but I thought it would be fun to test out the builder.
At the very least, the recovery works, and seems to flash things properly - although I haven't tested it thoroughly.
I imagine if we are to fix the display issue, we will likely have to make or find a custom "graphics.c" file, as the builder allows.
I just wanted to post my results, and hopefully something good will come out of it eventually.
Here's the recovery image:
CWM 6.0.1.5 Built From Adlx
WARNING: I recommend against flashing this - although it's neat to see it working, and MOST of it is functional, it has some major issues with backups and restoring backups. Nearly bricked my phone due to this
I recommend that this only be flashed in the event that you're trying to further it's development progress.
UPDATE:
This thread is obsolete, it was entirely experimental, and failed.
There is now ClockworkMod Recovery 6.0.4.8 available: HERE (under Recovery) and HERE (this is olivier's cwm thread, although at the time of posting, the one in my cm11 thread is more recent)

Unfortunately, it would seem that this builder can't figure out on its own how to use our screen properly, so the rom is very pink, and hard to read.

The other option is that someone more experienced than I, could build it from scratch, and fix these issues.
But I just wanted to post my results, and hopefully something good will come out of it eventually.
Here's the two copies I built:

There's an issue with 6.0... It's too big :-\ and won't fit in the partition.
Lucassarran flashes one he built with my device sources (were i did a trick to allow it to build and flash, but it probably has a flaw , no off mode charge iirc.
Cool feature is Deduplication of files in nandroids backups, meaning two backups will take less space than twice one backup.

Btw, yes, graphic issue is solved by using a custom graphics.c file.

Yeah, I built one from AOKP sources and adlx's source pretty easy too. But I'm having issues with system write, I believe. Haven't really tested it much. PM me if you want any help kronflux.
hmm. I wonder if there's a way to make it smaller..
probably by building it from source.
Any idea where I'd get the graphics.c file? or would that be something I have to make myself?

I build it from source. When I say it's too big, and that I worked around the size issue of course I was talking about sources, not the Web builder app.
There is probably a way to make it smaller, but I didn't find it.
The graphic file can be found in my github.

Updated OP
now has graphics.c and postrecoveryboot.sh, so it looks good, and the keypad lights up

This recovery does NOT work properly on the chacha. It was entirely experimental, and failed.
There is, however, CWM 6.0.4.8 available, you can download the latest built copy from my cm11 rom thread or from olivier's cwm thread(but at the moment, mine is more recent)
Thread has been updated.

[Q] i535 - Custom Recoveries Cannot Mount Anything!

UPDATE: See post #5 for the fix. It's really simple!
Hi,
First of all, I've been using this website as a resource for the last couple years. THANK YOU to all of you who dedicate your free time to helping the Android community!!!
K, now on to the issue:
This isn't my first rodeo. I'm not a dev, but I have a lot of experience with the Verizon S3. This is the second one I've owned, and I bought it off of craigslist. I'm starting to wonder if there's something wrong with the internal memory.
Stock recovery works perfectly, but both ClockworkMod and TWRP cannot mount anything -- cache, data, internal/external SD, etc.
My only computer is a MacBook Pro, and I have been using Odin 3.07 running inside a VMWare Fusion virtual machine running Windows 8.1. Luckily, Odin gets me back to stock every time, but I really need to get a custom recovery so I can get away from Touch Wiz.
I have tried 2 different versions of Casual as well as manually pushing everything through Odin.

It should work. Once latest version of casual is done try upgrading to latest version of whichever recovery you are gonna use. All the recoveries in casual are out of date and may just need to reflash recovery. Sounds like gonna use AOSP base so might as well stick with CWM as that is what you are going to end up with and what the AOSP devs support. While on TW can try upgrading it also as it the dev preferred recovery on TW. Shouldn't be the Mac if everything is actually unlocked, rooted and is flashing a recovery.

You must have a newer GS3, the newer devices (made within the past few months) have a higher revision internal card reader that breaks some recoveries. (I know because I flashed a sprint gs3 that had the same exact issue).
The fix for this is to have a recovery built with the fix in it, which is upstream in the cm-10.2 kernel, but not in any official recoveries yet.
Let me see if I can find the exact commit for you... I know invisiblek fixed it
EDIT: heres the sprint thread of info (DO NOT FLASH THE FILES THO THEY WILL MESS UP THE VZW GS3)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2391616&page=31
I found another thread on here with a guy having the exact same issue. That thread combined with the above information about outdated recovery images guided me to my solution. Here's how simple it was:
1) Use Casual to root/unlock.
2) Download Flashify
3) Download most recent ClockworkMod Recovery image
4) Use Flashify to flash said image
I really hope this info helps someone else!

Oh man! Thanks for posting how you got it to work. I've been trying to figure out what to do for almost 2 days.
I would of probably still be googling away if I hadn't found this. Thanks!
