Neither, bit tend to interfere with advanced configs and from my experience power users tend to advoid them. However, juice defender seems to be the lesser of the two evils. Personally I undervolt and underclock and get far better results

If you don't want to get into kernel changes (undervolting/underclocking), give JD a try. I've been using it for months and found, at least for me, a significant battery power savings using it. Spend the extra couple of bucks and get the JD Ultimate key.. it unlocks a bunch of features. With the same type of use I noticed about a 6 hr gain/day (was getting ~ 14hrs on a charge.. now anywhere from 20-24 hrs). There are many setting combinations, so you'll have to experiment what works best for you. I have it set to turn off the data connection when I'm on WiFi... and when my screen is off, have it set to turn off all radios (and while screen is off, you can set it to ping certain apps like gmail, facebook, etc just for a minute, then turn back off. It automatically will turn data on when you leave your Wifi area. You can also train it to turn on/off certain radios depending on your travels, time of day, use of certain apps, when battery gets to certain levels, etc. It has some cool widgets which show which radios are on/off and can be quickly toggled as well. Anyway, it takes a while to figure out what works best for your situation, but it is very flexible and has tons of features.

Contradictory to what I've been reading online about battery saving apps; I had GREAT results with easy battery saver. I know the app looks cheesy and the fact that i never heard about it before downloading from market.
Due to poor network signal at work, id barely have any charge left on my phone once i get out of work (8 hrs). this kind of apps really help.
JD seems to cause more conflicts/problems that it helped me, even if i turn off untested/expirmental. JD looks more sophisticated/advanced, it didn't work well with me.
The features which mainly effects battery life imo are:
1)Traffic scheduler
2)connectivty killer when screen is off.
These are must features for me, to get whatsapp msgs and email sync. and it seems that easy batter defender scheduler is more robust.
I usually choose to allow sync every 15 min with 30 sec window and connectivity killer to around 20kb/30s. I had bad results when letting the app manage my wifi connectivity based on location (remember wifi networks), better turn it off.
Other settings, screen timeout/brightness/UC/UV/cpu cores/deep_sleep/kernel/modem, must be explored to get max battery life.
Remember these apps will not help very much, if you are using your phone(i.e. screen is on). they work best when phone screen is turned off.
I'm currently using Battery XL from market to test it out.

Another app worth looking at is Green Power. It also can shut off data and turn it on in intervals for emails, IMs, etc.

They both are good options. I have used Juice Defender for several months and it is very good. I have installed Easy Battery Saver last week and it is also good. I only did the change from one app to another for trying

[Q] Does juice defender work?

Hello all.
I've been using juice defender recently and don't see a difference really, some say it works, others say it worsens your battery,
Does anyone know if it actually works?
Thanks in advanced
..... sex, drugs, metal music and unwanted pregnancies!
I really couldn't spot any difference, it claims it saves a lot of "juice" but it only pisses me off when I turn the screen on cause the data/wifi is being activated and slows the system a lot in those few seconds. The only thing I found it good for is the "location" feature for the WiFi, it automaticly turns it off when you aren't in range of your home router and it doesn't use GPS to determine your position. Simply when you're not home wifi is turned off, when you get back home it turns on without doing anything, really awesome stuff.
When it comes to battery conservation tho, mine goes through a day with or without juicedefender (+ ultimate juice addon), no more.
Works fantastic for my Kyocera Echo.
Got a whole day out of using my phone with the Extreme setting on.
Didn't notice any difference. The best savings I have found is to just go into airplane mode when I'm working and can't take calls.
Posts 3 and 4 above seem to be more the "extremist" settings ... both of which one can do manually, depending on your phone.
So, as mine is a Samung SG2, I dont need a program like JD, as I have inbuillt system (battery) controls that work just as well, I believe.
When being battery conscious, I can get more than 36 hours from the SG2, mainly using wifi at home for internet, playing movies etc.
How does superpower relate to juice defender? Jd didn't do much for me.

Juice Defender on Sensation yes or no?

I used Juice Defender on my Vibrant and it seemed to help quite a bit. However, on the Sensation, because it is running gingerbread, I have read mixed reviews. Some say it helps, some say it doesn't. I'd like to know your experience with this or other batter saving apps!

If nothing, it starts/stops mobile data when you turn the screen on/off. That on its own is a huge battery saver. It also turns wifi off when it's out of range, and mobile data off when you have wifi.
These things obviously increase battery life, no question about it. Of course, if you never have mobile data on, and don't want to have it on, there is no point to having juice defender
I find that it perpetually signs me out of Gtalk
Hmm. I was debating whether to get the elite version on the market as it seems to have a lot of extra features. I didn't know there were mixed reviews with gingerbread. Thanks.

I get an issue with juice defender where after I've turned the screen back on there is still not mobile internet connection.
I have to manually put the phone into flight mode and back to get a connection, and sometimes even need to reboot.
I got pretty much the same advantage as JD without the hassle by just enabling 'Power Efficiency' in the 'Power' menu in the settings. It turns off background data like JD and allowed me to go a full day with fairly high usage and still have 30% at 8pm.
N.B. - Having background data off means your widgets and mail won't sync as often so I put a 'Sync all' widget on one of my homescreens so that when I wanted an update then I could pull everything down at once.
Hope this helps
I've been using juice defender but I think I will try your suggestion for a couple days and see if it makes a difference. Thanks!
If you check the "always allow mobile internet" button in your wireless settings will give you a good compromise between stock and how juice defender constantly kills the data connection. That setting for me is good for an extra 20-25% a day. Only thing I notice differently is emails may take a minute or two to arrive and Gtalk is signed out when I don't have the phone active.
Juice defender will just manage your apps, settings to save battery.. just to regulate your battery..
I am using Juice defender and it's saying 1.61x now, the battery last about 3 days(I am not a heavy user) but before that it didn't so I found it to be quite helpful
yeh me too... from 8 hours to 10 hours with juice defender..

Battery Lifesaver

Saving Your Droid Charge's Battery
We all know that the droid charge is decent with battery but some functions just drain it so quick that it seems like its the phone itself. I have posted in several other threads about saving batter. I wanted to put together a single thread on all of the many ways as to save your battery. Some of these ways can be done through various apps free and paid. Some users of android opt to buy an extended battery for their phones to combat the high power consumption of the phone. This isn't always the best way to handle this as with the extended battery, you are very limited almost never going to find a case that protects your phone. Here are several factors that drain the charge's battery:
1. 4G. Its a known fact that Verizon's 4G connection is the fastest LTE that is in the market. This function is one of the most battery intensive functions that the phone has. While this radio is active it pulls a lot of juice from the battery to ensure that you stay connected and have the highest bandwidth possible.
2. Mobile Data. Keeping this function on allows you to recieve your email notifications, mms, and all other apps that require a data connection. This function can use 3g or 4g connection for data.
3. Screen Display. Though with the super Amolled plus screen is the best on the market, this is THE most drain on your battery.
4. Accounts and Sync. This function is a harsh one to control because it isn't always active and can run in the background or while the phone display is off.
I have listed some of the major functions of the phone that drain the battery. Below are some steps to prevent and/or help your droid charge last throughout the day. I use my phone at work while I am away from my computer or just during breaks and can last throughout an entire 10 hour work day without worry of my charge going dead.
1A. 4G. There are several things to be done to ensure that you don't let one of the droid charge's best feature become your worst enemy. While not using your phone for any data intensive apps, you should always turn this feature off to conserve battery. To turn this feature off, while on your home screen: Menu-->Settings-->Wireless & Networks-->Mobile Networks-->System Selection-->and choose CMDA Only (this is the 3g Network).
There is an easier way to get this feature on and off by a 4G toggle app and is linked here--> https://market.android.com/details?id=com.coreyapps.togglelte
2A. Mobile Data. While the above should be done every time you use/don't use your phone for data, this should be turned off always if you are connected to any wifi source. This also ensures that both your 3g and 4g radios are turned off while in a poor signal area and will save your battery the strain from trying to gain a signal. While turning this off, you will not receive data unless you are connected to wifi, but you will be able to receive calls and sms messages.
3A. Screen Display. This is the number one cause of battery drain. While there are preventative measures to ensure that you limit the strain, if you are using your phone a lot for anything, you will need to charge any device. You should pick a screen lock out timer that best suites you and you should let the phone turn the display off. I have mine set to 30 seconds and believe this to be the happy median between the two extremes. 15 seconds seems to be to short and 1 min is way to long. Note: If using the phone there should be no reason to use over 30 seconds.
4A. Accounts & Sync. This function isn't as bad as the others but can leave you puzzled if this is your first droid. This is the silent killer...To combat this only allow your phone to sync over wifi and the best is to set times to sync every 12 to 24 hours. I use 24 hours and it syncs around 2 a.m. while I am sleeping. To get your phone on a schedule like this, stay up to the wee hours of the morning or until you know for sure that you will be at home at the time for the sync to occur. When the time is right, go through the Manage Accounts and through each of your accounts and sync.
There are many other factors that could play a role in your phone not lasting the day. With the newer phones and the 4G capabilities, we should train ourselves and not our batteries. With this it is up to each individual user to ensure that they manage their phones in a proper manner for proper results. I have used an extended battery until i got fed up with not having a case for my phone. Once going back to the stock battery, I had to train myself to manage my phone to ensure that I could last an entire day on one full battery charge.
Contrary to popular belief, giving your Droid Charge some extra juice throughout the day isn't a bad thing. A full uninterrupted charge is best at night but throughout the day it isn't bad to sneak a good 10-15 min charge in. My battery life is amazing with following my routine of things when I use and don't use my phone.
There are several apps that can aid you squeezing the most life out of your battery. Juice Defender is the main one with many options and very customization.
Please let me know if anyone else has any more information on either battery intensive apps or functions and ways to correct them and I will be sure to update this post for everyone. Hope you enjoyed my write up.

For me I use it while away from my desk and don't want to take my laptop into the server room. I don't have time to sit at my desk and charge my phone. I am in a work place where there is no cell service.
Go ahead and see how long your battery last without service, your radios will suck it dry within a couple of hours.
Didn't say you have to do all of that, as there are apps to help you achieve it.
A black wallpaper helps too.

Ive seen other posts like this before. I know you're trying to help but there's no way I would go through all of that to have a smartphone. What kernel are you using? What Rom? I use my phone throughout the day a lot. I can go 10-12 hours with HEAVY use without turning my phone into a dumbphone. Not all of the time but most of the time you are doing something wrong if you're getting 4 hours of heavy phone use. Either that or you're on the wrong Rom/kernel and/or haven't calibrated it correctly. In my opinion, what's the use of even having a smartphone like this if you're going to constantly turn it into a dumbphone?

I haven't had a steady rom/kernel package in the last week. I have been testing Imnuts new infinity1031 build.
Your not turning your "smartphone" into a "dumbphone". You are managing your phone. No one said to completely turn off notifications/app updates (ie weather) on your phone.
When you say that you get 10-12 hours of heavy use, do you mean data use or just sms messaging etc? Also there is no phone out there that can stay connected to 4G using data and last 10-12 hours.
So your heavy use, isn't really heavy...
I agree, I can get two days or whatever on my battery UNTIL I run Sirius Radio online (& I have 4G)
If I listen to the NFL Sirius online channel I can't make it through a standard work day without using a fat extended battery (& it doesn't matter what ROM/modem I'm using)

I never turn anything off. Data is always left on (4G). When I am at home, I will connect via wifi but when I go to work or church or whatever Im on 4G. I have my notifications set to check every hour (Facebook, twitter, tapatalk, Gmail, weather, and Google plus). I text quite a bit throughout the day. Probably on the phone talking an average of 30 minutes a day. I jump on the browser quite a bit. I read twitter, Facebook, and tapatalk quite a bit throughout the day so screentime is average of about two hours. I listen to music at least an hour or so a day. So, again, consider myself fairly heavy user. It seems like I'm always on my phone.

I work in a huge metal building, opposite in a 4g area. I've found my 4g radio will drain my battery fast if the 4g signal is low. This is because the phone will keep increasing the power out until it gets good 2-way communication with the tower. If you're using 4g in a good coverage area and have good signal you're probably not going to see the battery drain nearly as much. Personally I use tasker to automatically control the data connection as I move between work and home. I use WiFi at home since its less battery intensive than 4g.

It's the best battery saver I have tried.

Hi all,
Just want to share a battery saver app which works really well on my charge. I used to have 10-12 hrs normal usage, now I have 20hrs with left over at the end of the day. The only feature that you have to look out for is "enable cpu saving", it may work for you, but for me this put my phone in so deep sleep that it never wake up. But of course just pull battery, reboot then disabled the feature. it made by a big Chinese internet security company and "melvinchng" is nice enough to translate it to English for us. All credits go to him. Hope you all like it. Cheers!

If u want to save battery just turn off 4g under wireless and networks. My 3g only will last 1.5 days of moderate to lighter use.

I may be missing something, but it looks like all it is doing is blocking mobile data periodically, right? mobile data is the biggest drainer on battery performance (in my experience). however, I don't want to have it off, even for a minute - as if I misplace my phone, I'll need mobile data to be on in order to find my phone via the Lookout app...

It doesn't unless you instruct it to do so. If you toggle wifi/4g on only when needed then you should save even more. Did you see Vulkano? that video streaming over 4g. If I have wifi/4g on all the time, with my normal usage, I can have the phone unplugged at 8am to 10pm and still have about 30% left. Of course my normal usage maybe different from yours. If I have your phone in standby (screen off), I got 10hrs and the phone is at 91%.(about 1% per hrs). I suggest to find out if this app really help or not, just try it out, you have nothing to loose.

thanks, I will.
I know that in standby mode with wifi on and 4G off, my battery drains about 1% per hour. with 4G on (no wifi connection), ~5% per hour.
once factoring in some moderate usage, that drops down quite significantly.
OK, as promissed, here are pictures after 11hrs. Noticed my screen time is more than 50%.

Actually, you didn't include your screen on time at all. Your screen's percentage of battery use was over 50%, though. Including your actual screen on time would help when comparing battery usage.
well, this app was a major fail for me. after 4 hours, down to 61%. it blocks what I need (google syncs such as mail, calendar, photos, drive, music, etc). so if someone sends me an appointment, I will not receive it.
I don't have any problem with Juice defender. But I guess it isn't for everyone. I just use it so I don't have to worry about manually switching back and forth between 4g and wifi as I go around throughout the day.
I turned off 4g recently to try to improve my horrible battery life (just got 4g in my area too ). It wasn't a huge difference but what really changed it for me was to stop overclocking. I really don't see much lag anyways and it didn't help with the apps I wanted so fixes fine for me.

regarding Wifi, I have found that editing the build.prop file to adjust the wifi interval scan helps dramatically. I changed my 1800 (once every 30 minutes). now I leave wifi and 4G on all the time with no significant battery drainage.
but I have found that these so-called battery saving apps just simply cut off mobile data or "auto-sync".
This app was a huge fail for me. Back to the antutu battery saver i go.

antutu was a fail for me too. so was "easy battery saver"
trying out juice defender again. I think I'm okay with mobile data turning on/off periodically. JD seems to do this nicely. I also like how JD turns on mobile data when the screen is unlocked.
however, I'm thinking that this could be done via a build.prop edit of some kind. essentially, what I would like to do is:
if WiFi is disconnected and screen is off/locked, turn on mobile data for 1 minute every 30 minutes, if WiFi is connected, turn off mobile data and keep wifi connection.

"Hypermiler" (Battery Life) Tips

This is a little bit of a boast, I guess you could say... but also educational in a way.
This is my most recent battery life. I found that when I posted my screenshots, people think they are faked in some way. (Posted it here and other GS3 forums) They are not. I am using the stock battery my phone came with. NOT an extended battery. And you can see from the battery graph that the phone was not charged. I guess this is to show that you can use your phone heavily, and still get amazing battery life.
I am using the stock jellybean leak. Not rooted or unlocked.
This is everything I have done to get good battery life.
-I turned the LED touch lights off (I don't like them, they're so bright)
-I have all vibrations off. My phone does not ever vibrate.
-I have power save on.
-I have S-Voice "wake command" off.
-I have motion control disabled.
-I am almost always on wifi (work & home)
-When I am on wifi, I turn mobile data off.
-When I am going to bed, I put my phone in airplane mode.
-I rely heavily on the task manager, I clear my open windows and under the "RAM" tab I clear memory. Probably once an hour.
-I have my sync OFF. I check my email manually.
-Auto brightness.
-I never partially charge. I let my battery go all the way down to 1% then I charge it to 100%. Always.
-Always have a dark background, if possible.
Thats everything. Mind you, I didn't make or receive any phone calls on this cycle. But I did use my phone, as you can see I didn't just let it sit around. Device idle was like 3%?
Anyone else a "hypermiler" like me? I don't get this much screen time every time, it ranges from 5-7. I've gotten more than this and I've gotten less.
Hope this can help even if it's only a little.

-Clearing the ram too much actually drains the battery more because certain apps will have to auto start again every time you clear memory
-Keeping it at around 0-30% all the time should save you more.(I can still see my screen during the day at 30%)
-That doesn't do anything.

-Are there no A/C outlets in your bedroom?
-What the previous guy said, this is a stupid thing to do. Java was designed around efficient use of resources, and restarting running apps (which would happen, unless you have them removed entirely) would use more processing power than you had saved by not having the tasks running in the first place.
-Using Auto is causing the system to periodically poll the light sensor, draining more battery than used otherwise.
-This is how you kill Li-Ion batteries (one way, at least). The whole spiel about discharging fully, THEN charging fully or the battery will have some sort of "memory" of capacity less than actual capacity is how Ni-Cad rechargables work, not Li-Ions. Li-Ion batteries are the opposite. For superior life, keep them topped up as much as possible. FYI
I hope THIS helped, more than a little.
There are plenty of outlets in my room. Lol I just don't need to use them that often as you can see also I hate getting calls and messages in the middle of the night but I use my phone as an alarm sometimes so airplane mode just seems convenient.
This is just what I do. I mean, some of the things I do may not help at all. But this is what I do with Android phones and I've always gotten really good battery life. I've always, always gone down to 1% then charged up to 100% and I've never had a battery go bad on me. Then again I only ever keep a phone for 1 year. I do know that these batteries don't have the memory problem, I just can't bring myself to not fully discharge or charge. I have mild OCD, for real. Little things like that brother me
I'll play with backlighting to see what that does for me.
I've gotta be doing something right. Idk about the task manager, I've just always liked not having programs running if I don't need them to be. I know they arent "running" but it just gives me peace of mind, I guess.
Thanks for the recommendations I will try them.

You getting really good battery life =/= you getting the best battery life possible.
I have pushed ~2 days of battery life without charging many times on my GS3 (with all the bells and whistles running, just mobile data turned off when i'm not commuting), i just don't have a reliable measurement because:
1. I'm flashing mods/roms/kernels/whatever multiple times per week, and
2. I usually charge my phone when it's convenient, which is fairly often.

I stopped flashing because of my OCD. I mean, I'm not crazy but it causes perfection issues and all the ROMs I was flashing had glitches here and there and Idk if you've known anyone with OCD but with the perfection issue, those glitches were all I could think about. So there went flashing. Lol.
Also comes into play with the charging thing. You seem knowledgeable in what you said but even though you said keeping it topped up is best, in my mind, that's destroying my battery. Lol. I really do appreciate your info though.

I'm glad you said it, so that I didn't have to. :silly:
I read your post and the first thing that came to mind was, "there is medication for that, you know."
Here's my .02. My battery never lasts that long. Not even close. I'd feel disappointed if it did. I bought my gsiii with the intent of gobbling up unlimited data and using the oc'd processor to run apps till the phone is so hot I have to set it down. I've burned up almost 6gigs of data since the 7th. I get around 4 hours of screen on time most generally. I also throw it on a charger whenever I have the chance. My battery rarely dips below 50%. Like others have said, full discharge cycles are for ni-cad batteries. Li-ion doesn't benefit. Good battery life for me is the lg flip phone we have on a diff line that lasts a couple weeks.

Okay, okay, as long as you admit it... I'll stop being a snarky jerk. I'm totally the same way though. Perfectionist to the core.
It's a very bad idea to let the battery go down to 1% regularly, lithium batteries should be charged more often for better life and more cycles
Sorry but I still just don't believe 7 hours of screen on time. 4 is above average even amazing screen on time for this phone and stock battery. I suppose there is the possibility of using 0 percent brightness, or even lux brightness or something similar to get the brightness even lower.
You said you use auto brightness, I'm sorry I just don't buy it.
People with the extended batteries are getting 7 hours of screen on time not stock batteries.
7 hours of screen on time is literally double almost every other phone on the market with stock batteries. I really fail to see how having minimum usage and a high performing rom will get you double screen on time.
Edit: with that said, in my current situation I will never have wifi access plus I tether a lot so I really have yet to personally see screen on time since I rooted. Before root and stock I got about 3.5 of screen on time.
Not trying to be a douche or anything just very curious about how 7 hours comes about.

you dont get 7 hours because you are not doing what op did for perfection, and you just like other "4 hour" guys in this thread. I can confirm 7 hours usage is totally possible and what left can support one day idle time when you turn off data etc. Iusually dont do that because I like my phone work at full functionality, but I also like tinkering around to keep maximum use of juice, by eliminating wake locks and autostart.
killing background helps sometimes because some stupid apps keeping using cpu after backgrounded. op go and get a iphone, its perfect for OCD since it can get zero unwanted background activity, amazing idle time and stable usage with relatively easier configuration and tweaking.
1% is NO. 1 battery killer, heat is NO. 2, top up at 100% is NO. 3. Li based battery is at best 40%. but plaese its just a phone, charge and use anytime you want. phone outdated way earlier than battery.

While I understand what you're saying I think you misread my post. I was strickly referring to the screen on time which 7 hours of screen on time with stock battery is inconceivable. 4 is about the most you would normally see.
7 hours of USAGE is common.

Well I mean. You don't have to believe me. I mean I have nothing to offer but my word. I do use auto brightness. But because of the suggestion I'll probably set it to manual and see what that does.
I got 7 hours screen on time with the stock battery. The battery says "3.8 v li-ion battery"
I've gotten more than this is the past but I've also gotten less.
Like I said you don't have to believe me but... I'm using the stock battery.
And to the poster who mentioned to get an iPhone - I have one for my business line

battery statistics are poor statistics in general. there are too many variables. luckily we have removeable batteries if we need mroe juice.
heres some postings to add to the mix
put my phone through the paces with fantasy football.
held up pretty well. stock battery mind you. on pace for nearly 8 hrs of on screen time. This isnt with typical use though... With typical use I can get 20hrs and 5-6 hrs of screen time. I thought anywhere from 4-6 hours of on screen time was what people were suppposed to be getting.
Yeah we all use our phone differently. I rarely actually talk on the phone with my GS3 because I use my iPhone for that. But everything else I do on my GS3, reading news, some browsing, xda.
I just thought I'd share what I do for people that may want to get better battery life.

Then I shouldn't use the word "usage". I meant 7 hours screen on time. Sometimes I got 8 or more, but only use it continuously after charging, no idle time.

Yet that involves turning off data. IMO the smartphone should always stay online. In my experience, iPhone can get constant -4 ~ -5ma juice flow during idle even with data (2G) and all the push notifications on, which are the only things I want for stay online. I feel its hard to get similar result on my GS3 though.

I'm always online, whether it's wi-fi or 4G. Luckily I have wi-fi at home and at work.
Like, literally as I'm walking out the door of my house, I turn on my mobile data, and when I get to work I turn it off. When I'm leaving work I turn mobile data back on and when I get home I turn it off.

what you did is pointless. If you leave data on, data is not connected when wifi is connected, and it will connect automatically when no wifi connection.

It's not pointless to me. As I said a few posts before... I have OCD, obsessive compulsive disorder. Things like this affect me. I know that being connected to Wi-Fi that data is not connected, but in my brain, it's as if something is telling me that because my data toggle is on, it's running.
I really can't help it.
