[Q] Dangers of Battery Pull Shutdowns (Quick Boot) - General Questions and Answers

What are the dangers and issues you could face from shutdowns like Quick Boot or battery pulls?
Currently, the ROM I'm on has an iffy shutdown so I use Quick Boot to bypass it but I just want to know what risks could come from it.
Thanks.

The risks are minimal. I wouldn't worry about it unless you're pulling the battery several times a day... An app like Quick Boot doesn't do anything bad. All it does is effectively run a command to reboot the phone just like you would with ADB from a computer. There's nothing wrong with that.
What ROM do you have that won't shut down properly? Doesn't sound like a very stable ROM.

stumbled into here after using quickboot for the first time. wondering if you have run into any problems using quickboot to go directly into recovery.

Those of you bricking on GB - do you have fast boot enabled?

I noticed that fast boot on the GB roms gave me issues when booting. Wondering if its a compounding factor of having this turned on. I have not seen a single reboot issue on either Froyo or GB roms and we all seem to be running the same hardware configurations....
I really don't think you understand how fast boot works. Fast boot is not bricking anyone.

All I know is when I have my phone on fast boot and go to shut down, my phone turns off (obviously). However, sometimes the LED light goes completely dark. Upon unplugging and plugging it back in it will come back on but the phone wont turn on when I try. Takes 5-6 attempts and sometimes reboots on the HTC screen.
That's because you have an app installed that isn't playing nice.
Fast boot is a suspend to RAM like feature. It will not work or function or affect recovery. Bricked phones reboot in recovery.

So what you are telling me is that fastboot is no longer in the bootloader and cant possibly be a problem?
I'm really starting to wonder if alot of these "bricks" are not really bricks and just people not knowing what they are doing?
I know not all, but some of the ones that are bricks maybe were caused by inexperienced users trying to do things they shouldn't be doing without knowing how to do it?
Just my two cents.

I wonder the same thing... I read the post by a very respected Thunderbolt rom maker who made the original 'go back to froyo' post... But I LOOKED and LOOKED through threads trying to find this 'high percent' and couldn't find ones that were people just messing up going to HBOOT and flashing the new baseband/radio... most were trying to flash the new radio through Rom Manager or something else... and eventually found a way out (which isn't a brick) a BRICK is something you cannot get to work ever again, as far as I'm concerned...
so... I'm not sure what the risks are, because I'm not a developer but I have faith in the guy who helps make BAMF rom... I jumped back to froyo (reluctantly) but have a nandroid backup of GB just in case I feel frisky lol
Sorry.... Deleted

Interesting that the CM7 build, which uses the GingerBread kernel, but the Froyo radio is not impacted.... really seems to tie it to the radio.

[Q] Restarting

So I've had the phone for about 3 weeks now and never had the restarting problem but now it's done it twice in the past 24 hours. Anyone know why it's doing it and how to fix it?

Completely stock, haven't rooted my phone yet. The phone every time has just been sitting on my desk or I'll be holding it doing nothing. I always close everything after I use it using the task manager. Let me know if you need any other info, and thanks.

hmm if its completely stock I couldn't say why, but maybe someone with more experience than me could chime in... as for a fix, perhaps if you backed everything up first, then a factory reset might do the trick

I'd look at any apps you recently installed. My Fascinate would reboot quite a bit at times for no reason, it could be a Samsung glitch.
What I tell my customers to do is;
-check that there isn't any software updates
-pull the battery and wait 30 sec. I know it is the generic answer but it fixes most problems, it just like a computer if it not working right, restart. (Laptops mainly in pulling the battery.)
-or factory/data reset. It often will fix the issue but there are the few cases where it will not solve the problem. (and you will lose all of your stuff on your phone, contacts are backed up by Google or backup asst.)
-lastly, root it!!! no problems on my GummyCharged, v1.5, 2.3.4 (I don't tell my customer this choice)
Yeah I'm going to root soon. I just keep on reading these forums everyday so I can hopefully prepare for rooting with no issues.

Phone acting stooopid.

Ok, so my phone is just not wanting to work. One day it just started to randomly reboot. I was thinking since it was around 100 degrees in my house, my phone was over heating. Then it would go from random hard reboots, to not turning on at all. It would even happen in recovery, and my phone can rarely flash a rom now. I know this is because some really stupid reason. I feel like my battery comes loose, or something XO Any help is good help =D

I have no clue where my other battery is at XO
I keep on getting status 0 in recovery with any rom. But when that isn't happening, the rom will hang on flashing. Like Bulletproof 1.1, it will hang at Apply Kevlar ...please be patient.
Fixed it, flashed a backup :3 Any clue why it did this? I had to format the phone like a million times Xo

Ok, so my phone was acting dumb. I was finally able to get it to boot, but knock on wood *knocks on wall*. I had to flash to stock (Still S-Off). Now I'm booted and running fine. I have no idea why. :T Puzzles me, also I'm tired as hell. So this might be very random.
I couldn't get my phone to stay on for more than 10 minutes. Sometimes it just wouldn't. Boot. I was not able to get Roms to flash (status 0).
So I (re)flashed CWM 5.5, and that seemed to help. Then I was only able to use backups.
Then I just couldn't get my phone to work :T
So I flash the update in the Hboot to get back to stock.
1st it booted fine. But I rebooted to Hboot, and got funky issues (would not boot past bootanimation)
Flash Hboot update twice.
Then I did two factory resets in Hboot.
Then I got my phone working. I've been slowly typing this over 1 1/2 30 Rock episodes. No reboots :T Should I unlock and get CWM on here? I feel like my issue was not being on a stock kernel. Plus on stock I'm getting crazy battery life.
I'll see how my night charge goes. Hopefully she stays booted :d

Sounds like maybe the internal memory chip is going south. At least something to consider.
How long have you had it now? Approaching the limit of rewrites flash memory is good for?

I just got a replacement phone about a month and half ago. The only Rom it stays stable with is the stock Rom. That makes a lot of sense tho', I was thinking my phone couldn't handle a UV. My phones running perfectly (and faster, and smoother than ever). I'm going to try unlocking it again, and reflashing the recovery. See how far that takes me.
Ok, so I unlocked my bootloader (No recovery). It was having trouble booting. Wouldn't boot with the USB plugged in. But I'm still 100% stock (S-Off, Unlocked). I'm going to run stock for 2 hours, and see if I get reboots.
So my phone acts up on custom kernels, that's what I'm seeing.
So my phone starts acting up when the battery is below 15%, and not running a stock kernel. :T

[Q] phone overheats with ROMs

Hi everyone,
I'm having overheating issues with the custom ROMs put up in the forums here. It's really frustrating because I love the interface but I can crashes and overheats pretty often.
I was running a rooted i727r with official ICS, I used ROM manager to flash to paranoid android ICS and JB, I also tried liquified (I think that;s what it's called) and everything runs great except I sometimes get overheating (up to 45 degrees celcius) at which point the phone just shuts itself off. And the worst part is that the battery gets super drained when that happens. I have done nothing to trigger and has happened when it was in my hand as well as in my pockets when in sleep mode.
I don't want to run official ICS, so if there is a solution, I'd be really grateful!
Also on an unrelated note, I can't get swype to work on these custom roms, does anyone have an idea?
Thanks in advance!
Use clockwork mod or twrp to flash and if you haven't yet, try your roms with the stock kernel.
Don't use rom manager and do some reading.

ROM Manager can and will brick your phone if you use it to flash ROMs on a Skyrocket. Read up and learn before doing things like that.
Stay on stock rooted and see if the problem persists. If it doesn't, switch to a TW-based ROM and use the stock kernel. If your phone is still cool, then move with caution into AOSP territory (which seems to be where you want to go) and consider UC'ing/UV'ing AFTER you've read up on them and understand the possible side effects.
my phone gets hot sometimes, but usually when i'm browsing for a while. doesn't seem to be overly hot though but definitely hot to the touch

I don't mean to sound defensive, but I've read all the stickies...they tell me how to do things, not WHY to do things (kinda like a recipe book). I might be ignorant in the technicalities, but I know my way around following instructions. Telling me to just READ is not helping me, telling me WHAT to read or WHERE to go is better, and I'll be glad to read.
I took your many advices and flashed back to the semi-official ICS using the CWM recovery. The overheating and crashing problems are no longer happening, at least not during all of today which is a good sign in my eye. I still don't have an indication why it wasn't working when I used to the ROMs provided in the development section. I follow the instructions to the tee and I still had the problem (even when I used the CWM instead of ROM manager pro).
I was having severe heating probs. I never let it get so hot that it autoshutdown but I'd do it manually. I found that there was a serious wakelock happening and even while awake media scanner was going nuts. On it's own it just chewed up the battery but combine a high useage app with media scanner and the phone got hot. I ended up doing a stock rom install via Odin, reformatting my ex sd card. It's been good ever since. You haven't been using Zedge by any chance??
Stew
No it wasn't installed because I loved the roms built in ringtones but I did notice that it was taking longer than usual to read the media from the external sd card...do you think it had something to do with that?

Could be. Try pulling everything off your sd card and put on your pc. Format the card and put everything back on.

It is the Media card...a couple of my friends have had the overheating issues on their devices. I would suggest formatting the media card on the PC as previously stated. If that fails then try another SD card since it could just be the SD card.
Thank you all, I will give this a try and report back!

To solve media scanner consume battery during phone start .... Disable media storage via startup manager app and rescan media using f5 media scanner app... Download both from play store.... Help save alot of juice

I will opt to say that it might be more related to how you are using the phone.
I've ran plenty of custom roms even OC to 1.9ghz but the phone will get hot no matter what with heavy wifi usage or talking I must say.
With that said, the custom rom will most likely not help unless you aim for roms that aim for that kind of purpose.
Others may beg to differ but that's my 2centz.
Alright, so I did what some of you said and disabled the media storage at start up. The crashes and overheating are fixed! But, now I can't see my pictures that I stopped in the external sd card when I'm browsing for them through my files or through the gallery. I can, however, see them through third party file browsers. It's there a way that I can at least see them them in my gallery? I tried f5 but it didn't work.
Thanks in advance

[Q] Phone booting on it's own Fastboot Overnight

This has been a pain in the butt because I've missed morning alarms just to find our my phone is sitting in the bright white screen of derp. This time I need to know, is this an issue for people in general or could this be a ROM issue?
HTC M8 used the $25 unlocking tool and slapped CM 12.1 on this beast. My advanced reboot menu is OFF in developer options. There is no fastboot or whatever from the stock ROM as far as I can tell. Nothing is pressing on the screen as its just face up on the ground. What can I do, what should I try?
EDIT (8/28/15): After trying a sense based rom the issue went away. Just followed the advice given below

Does this happen every night?
If it occurs often.. I would honestly just try flashing a Sense ROM for a few days and see what happens. At least you will know in a few days instead of pulling your hair out.
If it still reboots in Sense, probably a hardware problem
If it doesn't reboot anymore, probably a software glitch in CM
So after wondering "maybe the USB cable plugged into my wall charger causes it to somehow go to fastboot mode"... I just had a reboot at work. Had a youtube video open, I hit pause and turned off the screen, and slid the phone into my pocket. No sound, no vib no indications, 5 minutes later I check and find out that its in fastboot mode. So its not from the USB.
I'll try to install a Sense 7 ROM and see how that goes. Very frustrating.
The only other issue I have is GPS not updating quickly enough, it only catches my location approximately and only if WiFi is enabled even if its not connected...
I've only had issues with a bad boot.img, but i couldn't boot the ROM at all. I would try a different ROM & see if that is the issue

Did you install the right GAPPS package for that CM?
Did you fac reset before new OS install?
Fastboot was an option with KK, it is not an option with lollipop.
I use CleanRom 4.0 which is 5.0.1 based, no issues. Sense 6 based. Does not need GAPPS. If your gonna tryout other ROMs, I would try CR 4 for the M8. If it does not reboot auto like then maybe its the CM ver you used or maybe it did not load right. I like CR because it has been cleaned of all carrier software. Has only what you need to function as a phone and mini surf machine, lets you do the customization.
Hope you solve it.

I'm on Candy ROM which I believe is based off 5.1.1 CM12.1. I flashed GAPPS only after the installation and did a full wipe beforehand. After sticking with a N6 so long I don't really like the Sense layout anymore.
The method I used as per CleanRom guide.
Get 2.8.5 TWRP installed, a must for lollipop.
Make a nandroid backup.
Get firmware for Android 5 installed, carrier dependent!
Factory reset from bootloader
Install Sense or AOSP rom android 5.x.x.
if Sense based your done, if AOSP based install GAPPS ver for your OS/rom
Installing lollipop without right FW could cause issues.
Installing FW can brick your device! so be sure its right one, and make sure you get a nandroid backup stored on your added sd card. More importantly do not just take my word, double and triple check all steps before you leap.
I'll be honest I haven't really tried anything because I don't want to go through the hassle of installing and using other ROMs. Mainly because I think it's hard, even though I know it isn't :silly:
I've been just kinda dealing with the occasional random fastboot reboots. Same thing I have to press reboot twice to reboot the phone, and it happens both when plugged in and charging and when just sitting idle in my pocket. But it's never happened while I was using the phone.

Flash another ROM, or reflash CM. Make sure you wipe first. It was probably a bad flash and something is bonked. It'll take you less than 30 mins. I bet that'll take care of your issue. Good luck.
After many months now of using a sense based rom I've yet to run into the fastboot reset problem. I'm going to switch back to CM this weekend and see where it takes me.
