ROM Choice Help? - HTC Sensation

Hi gang...I'm new to the Sensation and the rom choices are staggering!
I need a little guidance on what I should do....I'm about to root and need a solid fast daily driver...as I depend on my phone for family, emergencies and for business.
I'd like ICS..but concerned about stability and app compatibility.
Or
Should I just stick to a GB rom?
Your feedback would be greatly appreciated

well obviously GB for now are more stable than ICS but now i am using insertcoin 4.6.1 and it is running great...if you want to be sure flash GB

I too am wondering if the ICS builds are a daily driver that can be trusted, and if so which one is favored by the community? I love the ICS on my prime but I don't know how it will go on my sensation . I came back to the sensation for ICS as I like the functionality of it. I left the gs2 because touchwiz just ruined any version of Android in my opinion,

I recently installed the ICS around 5 days ago. I'm using ARHD 6.3.0 and its working great. I haven't noticed any major bugs whatsoever, and I've only had minor problems with wifi-calling.
I'd say go for ICS. You'll be better off with ICS sooner or later anyways.

I used the Darkforest rom for weeks and never had an issue. The only reason I'm not using it now is because I've flashed the 'official' beta ICS from the HTC Elevate test. That is available on the Insertcoin website for download, if you want semi official and very stable then this is it!

I stuck with GB roms for a few weeks after getting my XE purely for the stability reason, but ive been running a few ICS roms and found ARHD, InsertCoin and Elegancia to be pretty safe bets for daily use if you like Sense. But if you're after a stable AOSP experience theres always Virtuous Inquisition which ive used for about a week at work with no problems.

For the last few weeks I've been using Insert Coin and never experienced any problems whatsoever. No force closes on anything, no reboots, no lag. I'm no dev but in my experience it's smoother and every bit as stable as Gingerbread.
Go for it!

Thank you everyone...ICS it is...now to which one....haha
I think the consensus have been ARDH vs Insert Coin.
Of those 2..which offers the stability..and customization of themes etc?

I have tried both ARHD and IC. I started with ARHD but the lag was a bit much. I switched to IC and have not looked back. I am not sure about themes but for stability and speed its IC for me

Purely a personal choice, Virtuous Inquisition as it offers an ICS AOSP feel. Get the 1.27.1100 HBOOT and you're sorted.
GB will be dead in the water soon so won't be a realistic option.
EDIT: I meant to add that ICS and the updated firmware seems to give better battery life.

Try Virtuous Inquisition 3.5 ICS. Bettery battery life than GB, good stability, can be used as daily driver. Only minor bugs. IMHO hybrid aosp is far better than pure Sense. Better for RAM and more delicate for battery Virtuous Inquisition has HTC camera and stock HTC music player with ability to be used with beats audio (this needs seperate update package).
What's more, this ROM doesn't have annoying desensed bugs like power saving mode under 20% of battery and fast boot.

VI 3.5.0 and don't look back.

I have stuck with ARHD 6 at the moment.
Their first ICS release was buggy and gaming was a bit of a no go, so i went over to InsertCoin for a while until the 4.0.3 came from ARHD.
Been using that since yesterday with 1.5cpu 300gpu kernel and so far it seems very stable, still no dungeon hunter though

Kernel issue, you'll have to wait till HTC releases the source/another version leaks.
I'm on the 4.0.3 Virtuous. 2.0.1 is fast and has slick hardware accel in the UI. 99% AOSP with Sense cam and Sense notification tray. Love it.

+1 for this rmc40 bad boy! It rock's big time
I'm loving Virtuous Inquisition (4.0.1). I got to mess with my uncle's Galaxy Nexus and really liked the stock ICS feel. If u like sense tho, ARHD never fails to impress.

I use RCMix ICE v2.1 with stock kernel. It's fast and dualcore works there! Perfect!
+1 virtuous.
- no problems so far..
- even Blutooth Stereo A2dp was working
- battery life 1-2 days
- fast .. smooth.
Virtuous Inquisition all day, I hate sense and this is a tidy ICS Rom.

Nothing BEST you can find. The only available is FIT with your need. Tell us what you like, what you want, what you need. User here probably can assist to give you some opinion. I'm on ARHD 6.0.2 but discharging all 3d widget, and all widget. I do like plain AOSP, but I feel comfortable with htc mail, contact and keyboard. when take "combined" rom aosp-sense ... some featur not work properly. i.e incoming call not show Icon on combining aosp+sense. HTC camera driver is better than aosp, thus I made ARHD 6.0.2 as plain as possible only 145 app left. changed roboto font to bitstreamVerasan ... roboto is too small for me.
It's main reason we join xda ... to learn and having fit ROM ... stock always give you what you dont need and dont use

Well, I enjoy flashing all of them while they are in the stages of development. I like to think of each Rom like that of a child. They all start out seeking the same goal, but instinctively over time each one starts to develop a different personality. Some, and no fault of their own, are a little slow while some are pushed to fast and suffer a lack of control. Some can be predictably stable but not overly exciting. While the other side wonder about with a mind of their own seeking direction. So, to best answer your question, have some fun and challenge yourself by giving them all a chance. Isn't that why you are here on XDA? Lastly, and without a bit of irony, I have paused curiously checking out this kid that was quirky at first, but now is starting to feel comfortable and trustworthy. Ive noticed over the days a quick pace in mind which ends at the finish without any lag or do overs yet knows their is much to be learned. Finally, standing strong, front and center, I refer to you "Virtuous Inquisition 2.0.1"
Wld u consider these roms for daily use? A lot of folks end up gng back to GB...

There's no going back for me or many other members using ICS!
Well, I did like Virtuous Inquisition 1.4.2 very much, but have found many bugs in 2.0.1 that took my pleasure away (FCs here and there, can't choose Ringtones, etc.). I am using 1.4.2 as my daily driver and think it's pretty far away from an early alpha stage. But there are bugs... e.g. can't use the QuickLinks more than once in Dolphin Browser Mini, Winamp seems to be buggy etc.
Came from CM7 Alpha, so I'm used to use an alpha for my sensation Hate Sense, so AOSP or nearly AOSP fits me most.
Just my 2 Cents
If you didn't upgrade to ICS yet don't do it!
Why?
Because:
-Scrolling is slow
-Some games are not working
-Many apps FC
-Battery is horrible if using wifi
-SD messing up from time to time
-ZERO mods because htc's systemui is not compatible with apktool
So better stay with GB or wait for CM9
Have to admit, scrolling is a turn-off... Also had many FCs. Otherwise, I like the speed improvement. Don't have much battery drain.
@vegetaleb: Which ICS Rom(s) did you try?
Read somewhere, that InsertCoins ICS might be very good...
.edit: Virtuous Inquisition 2.0.1 is now working a lot better. Probably installed some 1.4.2 Apps from HTC via Titanium Backup which caused htc.com FCs.
I am using ARHD 6.0.2(ICS 4.0.3) And is amazingly smooth ,fast, very good battery life, waiting for CM ICS stable now .

[Q] Ice Cream Sandwich ROM, Best for me?

Im looking for an ICS ROM for my HTC Sensation. I know it does kinda come down to personal preference, but Im looking for recommendations.
So, please just recommend as many ROMs as you think I should take a look at, and why do you think their worth me checking out? Please leave the ROM name, and if you can provide a link to it that would be increadible!
Out of all the phones I've, that I've used with XDA, the HTC Sensation section has been the best, friendly, helpful people
Thanks ahead of time!!
ARHD 6.0.3.
Tried it, worked great apart from a couple of games having problems (maybe they're not updated for ICS) so I rolled back to Gingerbread but it was a tough choice since there's a lot I like about ICS like the data usage monitor built in, the Browser syncing Bookmarks with Chrome etc.

Virtuous has been great so far for me.
if you want great battery life, a mostly Stock (Senseless) experience
i would go with this rom.
Android Revolution HD™ 6.0.3 works fine for me, if you accept the minor errors (it's still beta).
The phone is much faster (noticeable) and the Android 4 layout is, to my opinion, better to handle.
Make a backup of your current ROM and just try it. You can easily go back if it isn't what you expect.
InsertCoin latest for me rock solid and smooth as butter very little issues

I'm wondering if you have already made a choice for ICS ROM?
At the moment, I have Android 4.0.3 (Ice Cream Sandwich) + Sense UI 3.6 installed, which works perfectly.
Another vote for InsertCoin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1198684
It has some of the Sense junk stripped out, but still has the camera, lockscreen, calendar widgets... the good stuff. The latest is based on the htc 3.24 firmware and ICS 4.03 -solid, fast, great support.
I have to say my vote goes for Android revolution. I have used virtuous also but to me ARHD seems to work better for me. If you are a person looking to push more power out of your phone and to have install options when installing the rom that ARHD offers than ARHD is the way to go.
I am a big fan of the Virtuous Inquisition ROM as well as the Virtuous Quattro ROM. Both these ROMS are pretty much all AOSP. I have tried the Insert Coin ROM and the Revo ROM, but I do not like Sense, so that is why I prefer the VIQ and VI ROMS. What I did was I flashed the launcher from VIQ (Trebuchet) and use it on VI ROM instead of NOVA. I feel it is more responsive and "snappier" then NOVA launcher. I think if you want a great ICS ROM w/o Sense, flash Virtuous Inquistion with Trebuchet launcher and you will be very satisfied. Clean look, quick ROM, snappy feel. I also flashed the 1.5 Kernel so I can overclock for those apps and games that need a little extra juice.
I find Virtuous Inquisition to be the best for my needs.
I am not too bothered about Sense so I am quite happy with AOSP.
I find Virtuous to be smooth, stable and efficient. This is compared to the most recent versions of ARHD, Insertcoin, the ICS RUU and stock GB which I did not like at all and were too slow in my opinion.
I installed the 3.24 firmware and everything is ok on my XE.

ICS ROM Decision.

So i need some help deciding what ROM should i flash.
I have 2 options.
Virtous Inquistion and Quattro.
As i dont use bluetooth and camcorder so often i would go for the quattro but maybe i need them finding myself in a desperate situation. I would like to ask you if the Senseless rom ( Inquistion) is decent in terms of speed or maybe the same as quattro.
I've been using Virtuous Inquisition for a couple of weeks now and am loving it. I haven't used the bluetooth on it yet, but the camera and camcorder have been working really well for me. My wifi tethering doesn't seem to be working either, but they just updated the ROM, so it might be working now.
Quadrant Standard with this ROM for me is 2224
I'm still getting amazed at how fast the phone works.
Its so much nicer to be using ICS without sense.
Super smooth.
Inquisition v3.0 is pretty smooth and most everything works including BT and Camera; still will get occasional freezes and reboots.
Quattro Alpha3 has a noticeably quicker overall feel given that it is ASOP, but BT and Camcorder still do not work. Here you will also get occasional freezes and reboots.
I have Nandroids of both. Inquisition is a little farther along, but both still have kinks to work out - don't expect the polish of Gingerbread.
I've been running the inquisition version 2.1 for 4 days, everything works perfectly - had no freezes or reboots. Battery life is doubled compared to stock but make sure you follow the instructions to the letter.
On my HD2 I preferred aosp builds but I think the sensation has a while to go yet - reverse engineering drivers is very hard work.

Agreed. Ive been running virtuous since its release. It is the closest thing we have to full aosp on the sensation and it has grown to be a great rom since its release. Its just about 98% stable with very minor bugs if any. Quattro has more features and is full aosp but super buggy as it is still in alpha stage. I experienced 3 reboots and browser fc's in the first 30 mins of use. When it matures I'm sure it will be great though. I loved the lock screen shortcuts and quick settings notifications but as it isn't stable I moved back to the ever so solid Virtuous 3.0, with new firmware of course

blackICE 4.3 best ICS ROM
i have flashed most of the ICS ROMs in xda insertcoin revolution leedroid elegancia etc.....
all of the above are excellent ROMs and thanks for all the developer out there.
i must say i tried the blackICE4.3 rom from bigpercaso it is in my opinion the most beautiful ROM out there well themed and you can see that hard work made on this rom performance are good and battery life as well .......

well done big
I've used ARHD 6.0.2 and Virtuous Inquisition 3.0.0.
ARHD had FC bugs that might or might not be still there in 6.1.1, and performance is decent - not great. Battery life is good.
Virtuous Inquisition is pretty amazing. Great performance, snappy, good battery life, and only one or two random FCs so far. The only problem I have on Virtuous Inquisition is that when I try to send a message, I can't get contact suggestions when I type in a name - unless when I type in a number, then I would get contact suggestions.
Anybody else have a problem with this?

Being a fan of the Virtuous sense builds, I didn't hesitate to try VI since it's release. With a few minor bugs, the 3.0 with the latest firmware(I'm using 3.24 revolutionary) and the thing just flies. Amazing on how my phone is now compared to sense. I liked sense, but man the phone is super smooth without me having to flash kernels and such to do so. That's a testament to the Virtuous team IMO.
Bt and A2DP is important to me, so I am holding off of Quattro for now. In using VI 3.0, I have to preface that a few users, including me had some random reboots upon flashing for the first 12-24 hours. In my case my homescreens needed to be redone where the widgets would either disappear or be in the wrong place. However, after the ROM settled, the rom is IMO a great rom to try for ICS.
I am running ARHD 6.1.1 with sense 3.6 from Here Then last night I came across This the 1.7 undervolt- I don't know how the battery will be, but I do know that it is running super smooth. I have fallen in love with my phone all over again...
android revolution!
Dont know if I am late to the party
Dont know if I am late to the party....wether or not you've decided yet...But I'm going to chime in with my opinion.
Tried ARHD both ICS and non ICS ......and found that ARHD was better running GB in general quite stable and quite fast...I wasnt satisfied with the battery life I was getting...but generally a pretty solid ROM
But for running ICS I thing hands down it has to be senseless and for that I did not find anything better than Virtuous Inquisition...Im super happy with my phone and have had no glitches or weird FC's...and have great battery life....
hope this helps.
I've been flicking between ROMs recently to try and find the best one. For me it has to be Senseless - Sense is pretty but it's an absolute drain on battery, CPU, and RAM, regardless of which ROM base. For me, it's the Virtuous offerings through Inquisition and Quattro.
I'm running Quattro at the moment because it's as close as you can get to AOSP. It's coming along nicely but it's also got quite a few kinks that need to be ironed out. And I haven't been on Inquisition since 2.0, and the lock screen bug was a bit annoying. But might give it another try tonight, given that Quattro is giving my battery a good kicking. Come back once there's evidence that the battery problems have been addressed and the random FCs fixed.

[Q] Are the custom ICS roms completely stable now?

I just got my Asurion replacement Senny(my previous Senny was stolen on Friday 3/16). I now need to S-Off, SuperCID, root, change recovery, etc all over again. I was thinking about keeping it stock since I thought the T-Mobile ICS update was imminent. If it's not, I might as well install ARHD, InsertCoin, or Virtuous. In lieu of trying to read through the 200+ pages of posts in the developer's sections, can someone quickly outline how far the developers have come with the ICS roms. I installed ICS (InsertCoin) a few months ago, but there were too many bugs. With official ICS Ruu's being released, are the custom ICS Roms stable enough for the Tmobile branded Senny 4G?
Are we at Daily Driver stage?!
P.S.
It seems like the only issue with ICS right now is TMob's Wifi Calling, which I never use.
Now the kernel source has been released we're pretty much there in terms of stability. TMOUS OTA will round things up nicely
every ICS custom ROM ive flashed has been stable. Every ICS ROM thread ive read said it was stable.
Id say they are stable lol
Most ROMs are stable even AOSP but only ROMs based on 3.6 have everything working.

They have been stable for months. Try a few and enjoy
Iv been around since the sensation was released and it has been a long haul to get some stability and performance from these phones, they had the power just didn't have the right pair with software code. The transfer from GB to ICS showed a noticeable increase in performance even from the untouched 3.6 OTA ROM but the performance is not perfect, it is good and a lot better than GB but not perfect (perfectionist here). AOSP ROMS offer higher performance in regards to UI experience but lack in stability and variety, i have managed to find the cm9 rom recently the most stable and fastest rom in UI performance and stability.
This is my list of great rom's for the different ones that there are.
ARHD 6.5.2 (STABLE AND MOFO FAST) (SENSE 3.6)
OPENSENSATION CM9 (STABLE AND FASTEST) (AOSP)
MIUI (STABLE BUT NOT FAST) (SENSELESS NOT AOSP)
MIUI TRIPNRAVER (FAST BUT NOT STABLE) (AOSP)
Yet to find a sense 4.0 stable rom yet.
I have tried many others but these stand out on top of each of the different roms there are.
JUST MY OPINION.
Biggest issues with ICS ROMs for us TMobilie US users are the included TMo apps (My Account/Account manager) and WiFi Calling.
Account manger doesn't work, flat out.
Wi Fi calling will work, but it'll drop calls sometimes a minute or two in.
The latest AHRD with the change that keeps the launcher in memory is really smoking.
Great battery life, super stable and smoking fast...
Just nandroid and try a few....
Thanks for all of the fast responses. There is a reason that I spend so much time on XDA. Awesome Community!!
Rockfoo.
I know there were posts with official ICS ROMs, you can flash one.
As T-mo user I'm a bit hesitant to flush it now, waiting for official OTA.
Of course T-mo is loading ROM with their crap right now and who knows when it will be released. I'll wait for coupe of weeks and if nothing comes out, I will flash the one I saw in EddyOS' post somewhere. It's an original HTC ROM minus T-mo bloatware.
JMO.
I took the dive and S-off'd, rooted, SuperCID'd, installed 4ext, nandroid backup'd, upgraded the firmware, and installed ARHD. It's fast, smooth and so far everything works. Only issue is that I HATE SENSE 3.6. I came from the LG G2X with all of it's AOSP goodness. Problem was the actual hardware was a travesty! My brother-in-law and my girlfriend had HTC phones and I used to think their phones were the ****! And Sense was great until I started downloading and using other developers launchers, messaging apps, etc.
Somehow, Sense 3.0 never really bothered me, but 3.6 completely hides all of ICS's goodness in my opinion. As most of the innovation that HTC developed in Sense is has been incorporated into ICS, Sense 3.6 is largely irrelevant. Sense 3.6 is just in the way!
Since most of the heavy lifting is done, I think that I can now just flash a different ICS rom...right?
I'd like to try ICS as it was intended.
Yes they are cause we have final ota base and also the kernel source... They're perfect

I've been running custom ICS roms for a long time, and i will say that they are now completely stable, no FC's or stuff that does not work

My ROM experience

People are always posting up new threads asking for advice on this ROM vs. that ROM. Well, I haven't tried them all, but I've tried quite a few of the more popular ones recently. I'm not going to pick these ROMS apart. If you want more info about what I liked or didn't like about a particular ROM I've tried, go ahead and ask.
I got my Sensation back in January. I used the stock Gingerbread for a couple of months. Then got frustrated when the T-Mobile ICS update got delayed and have been on a flashing frenzy ever since.
I've been trying a lot of ROMs lately. I started with ARHD, then went to Elegancia, then Hypernonsense, then back to Elegancia, then Sense 4 Elegancia, then back to 3.6, then Virtuous Inquisition, then Opensensation (CM9), and back to Elegancia again. I've also tried Sebastion, faux, and bricked kernels - I prefer bricked best.
I honestly don't a see a performance difference between Sense, stripped Sense, or AOSP ROMs. I have System Tuner Pro and always monitor memory usage. I thought that the stripped and AOSP ROMs would have gobs of free memory available, but they just don't. They're no better or worse. I also was compelled to try those ROMs to improve battery life. Again, the experience didn't match the hype.
It all comes down to personal preference. Each ROM has its own glitches. But from my experience, full Sense 3.6 ROMs are the most functional and most stable. I loved the Sense 4.0 ROM I tried, except that Sense crashed on me like 3 times a day having to pull the battery each time. For me, nothing beats the Sense widgets. I live in the email and calendar widgets for work and the music widget in the car. No other widgets come close.
I think I'm gonna quit screwing around with it for a while. I am very happy with the Elegancia Sense 3.6 ROM / Bricked kernal combo. It's pretty much already modded/themed the I way I would do it. I can just flash it and go. I will try the Sense 4.0 version again when it's more mature. I loved it, I just can't have my phone crashing on me constantly.
I still want to try MIUI and will probably try CM9 again when it's official. I really like some of the home screen setups people have been able to pull off with their AOSP ROMs. But I think the widgets will always pull me back to a full Sense ROM. The only widgets that can compete, you have to pay for - and they're still not as good. Also, the AOSP camera blows compared to the Sense camera. In the end, it's all about what's functional for you.
In conclusion, try a few, try a bunch... don't get lost in the hunt for better battery life and more performance, because - 1) those 2 things don't go together... & 2) those 2 things are largely the same across all ROMS whether you're full Sense, stripped-Sense, or AOSP. Just find what you like and enjoy!
SO wutZ da best roms to use?
Just joking, but it's too bad some people are serious.
Its all about your liking that's it otherwise there is not a rom whit better battery life than any others

I've been using Ordroid (Sense4) for a week or so now and I've found it quiet stable to be honest. I haven't experienced any crashes.
The batterylife was in 5.0.X about 17 hours (2 hours of screen turned on).
V6.0.0; I can't say if there are anything wrong just yet since its been out for about 2 days only and I've used it for 1 day. but the first batterycycle was about 21 hours with 2h 5m screen turned on. Only thing I could complain about with Ordroid is the partially working BT, I can't say anything about the Wifi-tethering issue because I am not using it.
Hmm, well I guess that was that.
The partially working Bluetooth issue is across all Sense 4 ROMs. It has to do with the fact that Sense 4 was ported from another device with different BT hardware - so the Sense drivers aren't fully compatible.
With the release of T-Mobile's official RUU, it may be time try Sense 4 again and see if some of the previous issues I experienced are fixed now. But BT will probably always only be partially working due to the driver issue.

Ah okey I didn't know that, thanks for sharing
I like my sence less rom. Its just personal preference! That's what makes it fun! Options! Gotta love options!

I'd love to know whether any of these custom ICS ROMs is better than the stock ICS ROM. I get that they are all (Sense or no Sense) pretty much the same when it comes to performance and battery, but how do they compare to the stock one? Will I get any benefits from switching from the stock ICS to one of these?
Thanks!
great post!
I use elegancia ics 4.3 sence 4.0 is good so far it has a few glitches like if you try to take a picture while recording a video, the camera crashes or if you press the camera button to take several pictures at once it crashes! But other than that is good!
P.D. that Rom is updated like every other day but I still don't know how to update it

Well I've always found that the custom roms out-compete the stock ones repeatedly. You get a much better battery life, minimal bloatware and more power. Use android revolution hd 6+ and you'll see the differences

Yes I agree! I have much better battery life and over all better experience!

I tried Elegancia Sense 4 again last night. I thought it was time to give it another go since there have a few builds released since the last time. Unfortunately, nothing has changed. Whatever issues I'm having are buried deeper than what gets changed from build to build.
My phone has crashed on my twice in the last 5 hours. It's unfortunate. I really like Sense 4 - I think it's cleaner & smoother than 3.6. The camera is better and faster than 3.6. But if your phone crashes on you while changing menus or doesn't wake up and you have to pull the battery all the time, then it's useless.
Does anyone else have these issues with Sense 4? Maybe another Sense 4 ROM is better? I have not yet tried another Sense 4 ROM because it seems they all use the same base. Maybe I should try another and see if it works better...
The new InsertCoin ROM Sense 4.0 is out now, looks very stable, only FM Radio not working. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546731
I just flashed OrDroid Sense 4. I'll give that one a shot. It has a different base - the new leaked Ville RUU instead of the One S. The Ville and Sensation share the same processor, so maybe that will do the trick.
EDIT: That one's no good for me either. It has its own set of glitches I'm not willing to live with.
Now trying Steve's new TMOUS Elegancia with Bricked kernel.
Any tradeoffs for non Sense ROMs? I know the camera app is better on HTC's but other than that? Is there a Torch app similar to the stock one? Etc..
...and back on Elegancia 3.7.6. lol
I am running the updated TMOUS firmware now, tho. along with the other radio fix for TMOUS users. This might be the best combo I've run yet. But I'm still anxious for a fully functional Sense 4 ROM.

There is another Torch app that is pretty much the same. The ROMs I've tried all have it included if they don't have the HTC app.

Just flash the new one on top. No super wipe required all your data and apps are safe

For me, I love the overclocking of custom roms/kernels. Stock Sensation is 1.2ghz. My custom rom Sensation is 1.7ghz. Man is it speedy. I took the time to read countless posts and spent a ton of time learning how to mod my Sensation. No way am I going back to stock carrier rom.
