How to install gingerbread stock camera or MIUI camera app on ICS stock ROM ? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
Tried install both of these on stock ICS and checked "unknown source" , didn't allow me ...
Can I do it using CWMR ?
Thanks

im not sure if this will work but its worth a shot.
when youre in the rom that you want a system application from get the app called "system app backup" i believe cm made it but dont quote me. Then backup the app you want and save it to your sd card. after copy it to your computer and install the rom you want to have on your phone, once again install system app backup on your phone and recover the app you would like to have on your system.
the only thing that i have done close to this is replace the stock launcher.apk with "launcher 7".
always remember to backup, and if this works let me know!

You might have luck with the MIUI camera but the GB one is most likely a no go (all kinds of changes in ICS that should prevent GB system apps from working). If you really want to try it then you can use a file explorer with super user permissions (estrongs or root explorer come to mind) and move the .apk to /system/app and change the permissions to match other system apps.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but in case someone actually stumbles on it, here is the answer.. this should be easy. If you can get apktools working on your computer(google is your friend) you decompile the app you want, along with the app it would be in conflict with. The android system has a list of SYSTEM apps that are able to use the same features.. anyways, once you decompile both apks, copy the manifest.xml and meta-info folder(and contained folder) from the built in app(in this case the ICS camera) into the decompiled app you want to install(gingerbread camera), then you recompile the one you want to add(you can just leave the original app installed and delete the one you decompiled). Make sure you give the gingerbread app a different name, and it will work. Literally, I just tested it(it is that quick and easy once you have apktools setup), and it seems to install/work just fine.
Some FEATURES of the app might not work- like you may not be able to preview the pictures you take with it in the system gallery, but all the settings and whatnot of the actual camera app should be built into the apk itself-- besides 4.0.3+ has app associations, you may be able to use that to get some features working by making it your default camera..
Anyways, pretty sure that would help- good luck.

AOSP apks?

Hey everyone. I have decided to get rid of some HTC apks and replace them with AOSP apks. (Music, Dialer, Browser, etc.) I am not 100% sure on which ones I will be replacing, but can someone provide a download for AOSP apks? That would be awesome because I know I can download a few ROMs here and then take out the AOSP apks, but my internet is REALLY slow, so that would take forever. Also, feel free to let me know on which ones I should take out and why. I would really like a second opinion on what all can be replaced and if replacing any would help. Let me know! Thanks to the one who uploads the apks!

Definitely replace HTC mms. AOSP mms is so much faster, especially if you're using the AOSP keyboard. The email gives you a combined inbox, which is kind of nice - but attachments might not download properly. Music is nice and fast, but you don't get the lockscreen controls. Contacts/dialer is kinda personal preference. Browser always shows the taskbar and addressbar, unlike the HTC browser; it also seems a bit faster from startup. However, doubletap zoom might not work. Oh, the AOSP browser wont work without the com.cyanogenmod.android.jar and com.cyanogenmod.android.xml files (those are found in roms, so you might be out of luck with the browser...)
these apks are from Darch's roms.
What's needed to get AOSP contacts.apk to work with my awesome DCv2.06 setup? I imagine some framework is not in place - something deep like that?
Attempted to install (thought it would fail or at least not work if it did install) and it said 'Not Installed' and an OK button.

You have to push it in to system/app ... installing from a file explorer should only work for the email apk.

thanks for the AOSP dialer i been looking for it for awhile now thanks
now im trying to decide on which MMS app i want to use i like the AOSP one better than the HTC one but it won't let you send V-cards(contact card) via MMS.

contacts--> push/without replacing anything...you have to keep the HTC dialer alongside the AOSP dialer

For the browser, remove the existing browser.apk, replace it with the AOSP browser.apk, THEN you must place these files in the corresponding paths in your rom:

Lol. Was just about to say I just pushed Contacts.apk to my phone (running Fresh 2.0d) and it works perfectly .
EDIT** Only thing I have found not working with Contacts.apk from AOSP is how they are listed. If you go into contacts, you can see them listed correctly (alphabetically) but the displayed alphabet is technically incorrect (if that makes any sense). For example, the names are in the correct order, but the "A" is listed under "W" even though it is up top as it should be.

Just added it. Use the Contacts.apk that someone attached above and you have to push it to your phone as a /system/app through ADB. Nothing to it. Works great, no modification needed.
Most importantly it allows you to select which groups from your contacts in google that you want to sync. An option that broke or was removed in all 2.1 based roms out right now.

Thanks for posting this.
I'm still having some trouble getting Contacts.apk on my Hero. I'm running DC 2.072.
I'm able to successfully push the Contacts.apk from this thread with the command adb push Contacts.apk /sytem/app while in recovery mode. When I rebooted, though, I couldn't find it on the phone. There's no "Contacts" app, and the only "Phone" app is the HTC one.
Any suggestions?? I have also previously tried installing the APK by copying it to the SD card and then using an app installer, but the install would either fail, or I would get an FC when launching the phone app.

[APP] Newest MIUI Music .apk (4/11/11)

Hey here's a link to another thread with the newest MIUI Music .apk (4/11/11)
Here
Only issue I've noticed is when you go into the settings, if you try to scroll down to see "Filter files", it force closes the app. Hopefully someone can come up with a fix, but everything else seems to work so, enjoy! - zmag
(P.S. Show me some love and hit the THANKS button!)
Cool stuff I'm running it now with CM7 Final. I've always liked the MIUI music app.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA Premium App
awesome, thanks. Now how do I remove the other one? CM7
Anyone know where there is an installable apk?
alaman68: you can remove the original cm7 music .apk from system/app with Root Explorer (or a similar app to access the system files...) or you can move it to the system folder or SD card in case you want it again.
nhutpham: as far as I know, you can NOT just click on the .apk and "Install" it. The link I posted has pretty specific directions to install it with Root Explorer. Just make sure you set the permissions like in the pic before you reboot, or it won't show up in the app drawer.
If you're still having trouble lemme know. - zmag
Pushed it to /system/app on my Sense ROM and it doesn't show up in the app drawer. Did a hot restart and a full reboot. No app icon and no widget.
I have tried the exact instructions twice, but the app didn't appear in the app drawer either time. I'm on a sense based rom using Launcher Pro, MIUI music hasn't been previously installed on the current rom I'm using.
The previous MIUI apk's have been installable, I might just wait till another one shows up.
hey, thanks again. I'm getting weird force close when I open the settings and try to scroll down to search file size. Does anyone have any idea how the change these parameters?
Wont work for me either... followed the instructions to a tee

I am not sure, but I think I am just having bad luck. It crashes every time I go into the settings (as soon as I hit the button). I had to reboot just to get it out of notification bar.
Well, to the people getting force closes in the settings: I did state that in my original post lol... but yeah, not a huge deal imo. I think the coding for Filter Files (where if you try to display that section in the settings, it force closes) because its codependency relies on a MIUI-specific library. I am running this on CM7 Final, and everything works ok except that section of the settings.
And to the best of my knowledge, MIUI is built on Gingerbread (2.3) and won't work on Sense based roms (sorry Sense users)
And big ups to Magnus for the update.zip for people who couldn't get it to install.

Application Installer from HK ROM

Hey everyone!
So I bought my Play from Hong Kong 4 months ago and it's working great here in the Philippines. Now, I'm already on 4.0 UK Generic ROM to take advantage of the preserve-root-via-OTA trick but as everyone will know I lost some of the apps from HK ROM and some apps are added because they are by default packed with the UK ROM. There was this app from the HK ROM called Application Installer which, as the name implies, is a very simple application that when launched finds all APKs saved on your SD Card and from there you can select to install them. I missed that application because of it's simplicity and straight-forward job. I just can't live with going through File Managers only to install a single APK every time.
Now, will anyone be kind enough to upload here the specific Application Installer APK (can't remember the exact name) extracted from the system/app directory of the HK ROM for Xperia PLAY? I'm already on UK Generic and it would be pain in the butt to reflash again the HK ROM, extract a single apk, then flash back to UK Generic.
Thanks in advance everyone!
PS: If it's in the wrong section, somebody move this please?
Didn't read correctly, ignore.
Sent from my LT15i using XDA App
huh?
was it something i did?
anyone? please?
do you have a HK based ROM? tried looking from it and extracting from it?
as i have said on my first post, i was previously on HK ROM, but now on UK Generic, but flashing back just to get a single apk is not an option as i have lots of apps already installed, settings already set, and virtually no time to do backups, flashing and reflashing, and rooting, and OTA all over again... i could have done that already and not asked here if it was possible for me..
anyone? please? please? need it so badly...
I have the app in my phone, instructions needed for me to extract from my phone and you'll getting it soon enough
you only need root friend, and with the help of Root Explorer or any file manager app that can read through system/app directory, you will find the apk file, copy (NOT CUT) it somewhere in the SD then post it here..
wats the name of the apk? GenericApplicationInstaller? PackageInstaller? I came across this 2, i'll just post it and you try it for yourself okay?
but i have both of those on my system..
and those two don't have specific icons..they use the generic Android icon for apk's..
i remember it having its own icon for itself.. sigh..
how bout this? i have another called CustomizedApplicationInstaller.
If i may ask, what is so desperately needed about this app.
As far as i can tell from your story only thing it does is a batch installaton of apk's.
Ad itś not like you are flashing a new rom every day i suppose.
Just use titanium backup, you can make a backup of all your apps with all settngs and data preserved. it saves it to your sd card, and you can run a batch restore wich restores all your apps.
cause is quite convenient as it searches all the apks you have in your sd card and list out for you so that you won't need to look for every single apk if you wanna install them...........
why dont you use something similar from the market?
beats me, ts wants that, i have it but i have no idea where it is
i already made my point.. i don't have to explain again..
ps: my signature really makes sense..
any ways to pull out from titanium backup?
nvm i think i found it, try this
my oh my just how can i thank thee good sir?
heartache healed!

[APP] App2zip [Make a flashable zip of all your apps and their data!]

Greetings!
**Standard Disclaimer applies here: If you screw up your device trying to follow the steps in this thread, it's not my fault. The second you unlocked your bootloader, you took full responsibility for what happens to your device.**
First, I want to thank SCDevs and xdaid for putting this app out and for continuing development and support. The original thread can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1561729
The app can also be downloaded for free in the Play Store here: http://goo.gl/Zmzmh
May I suggest that you support development of this app by buying the Donate version here: http://goo.gl/SVtyl
What does this app do? This app will make a flashable update.zip of all your apps and their data, /including system apps if you so choose, for you to flash after you complete a full wipe and flash a new rom.
While it is understood that Titanium backup can restore all your apps and data and take a relatively short amount of time to do its job, this app makes it a bit more convenient by allowing you to just flash a zip and be done with it.
Enjoy the app.
I found a bug with the restoration of 2 apps.
Chrome browser
Quickpic
Both apps had to be uninstalled and.reinstalled for them to function. Just a heads up.

The stock sense mms.apk? Idk I haven't tried that. Haven't used a pure stock sensation Rom since last July. I'm guessing no since stock is gb and sense 4.0 is ics. You can try it tho. If you want to save your messages just use.sms backup and restore in the Play Store. It's a free app and has always worked for me.
On a side note, I know the stock ics mms.apk DOES work on sense 4.0. I'm using it on OrDroid right now.
Hope that helped. Lmk if I didn't answer your question.

Wait a second... I get it. You can do the backup and restore from one messaging app to another, you just have to use sms backup and restore or a similar app.

Weird. Ok so the way around that is to grab the update-binary from a rom that doesn't use aroma installer (I used aokp when I tested this) and overwrite the one found in data/data/scdev-app2zip/files then make your backup zip. I know that will work.

[UPDATED 11/1/2012] [Exclusive] Unreleased Gmail 4.2 APK With Pinch-To-Zoom

here it is guys, the newest Gmail 4.2 Reported to be working for Android 4.0+, rooted devices only. If you are having issues with 'waiting to sync', clear app data under settings and try again
Installation Option 1:
uwdus said:
Uninstalled old apk with Titanium -> Reboot -> Installed new Gmail apk with explorer -> Reboot - Done

Installation Option 2:
The Gmail 4.2 APK is signed by Google, but with a different key than the one in the Play Store (we checked the signatures - they differ). One is probably the test key and the other the production key. For this reason, you can't simply install it as an update and therefore need to be rooted with the ability to mount the /system directory for writing in order to remove the existing Gmail APK.
OK, let's get down to it. You'll probably need ADB installed on your computer (here's an easy way that doesn't require downloading the Android SDK). There is a chance that this might work without ADB by just removing the APKs mentioned below and installing the new one, but it didn't seem to work reliably for everyone. This should, though:
1. Download Gmail 4.2 from one of the mirrors above.
2. Rename it to Gmail2.apk.
3. Make a Nandroid backup in case something goes wrong (this is always a good thing to do before messing with your device).
4. Delete (or move if you want to save the APKs) all other versions of Gmail. Usually there are 2 or 3 copies. One will be in /system/app (that's the original Gmail that was pre-installed on the device) and there may be a few in /data/app (these are the updates installed from the Play Store). They'll be called "Gmail.apk," or "com.google.android.gm-[number].apk," An easy way to tell is to look for the Gmail icon.
5. You may need to delete the .odex files matching the APKs in step 4 too, if you have them. Neither I nor Artem had to do this, but there are many different ROMs out there, and we're trying to cover all bases. Ignore this step and only come back to it if something doesn't work later.
6. Reboot. Once you do, you should have no Gmail as far as Android is concerned.
7. You can try to install the Gmail 4.2 APK you downloaded at this point by tapping it in your favorite file explorer (move the APK to your device first, of course). If that doesn't work, or if you prefer ADB, fire up a command line and type adb install Gmail2.apk.
If you get an error message, you probably didn't delete all copies of Gmail. If you don't feel like playing with ADB for Step 7, I've also gotten it to work by just copying the APK to /data/app, but that's not as fool proof as "ADB install".

If someone can invert this, it would so awesome!
Works fine by doing what Uwdus said, just uninstall the old gmail with titanium backup and then use a root explorer to push the new one to system/app and reboot.
I just renamed the gmail .apk and .odex to .bak and .odex.bak respectively in es explorer, and rebooted. Than I moved the Gmail2.apk to /system/app, fixed permissions, and installed. One more reboot and wala - she was up and running! Thanks for this, very sweet!

Kind of inverted
Just picked up the semi inverted 4.2 made by TeamBaked. Even though I prefer a full inverted app, I must say the white background in the email is actually easier to read. Anyway, check it out (I would post a link but I am not sure I am allowed to).
And installing was a breeze. As others mentioned, uninstall via TiBackup then install...loving the swipe feature.
